Epson Perfection 2450 Photo Scanner Review

Epson Perfection 2450 Photo Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I needed a scanner mainly for scanning my old prints, negatives and slides. Initially I was going to buy a cheaper photo scanner (Epson 1250), but was disappointed by its poor quality.
The 2450 has exceeded my expectations. From prints or negatives, it is producing superb quality scans, and it does it FAST. A few comments from my experience so far:
- The scanner comes with an excellent bundle of software. TWAIN is a great product - very user friendly UI for all types of scans (scan to file, print, email, post to the Web). Not too happy with SilverFast though (bad UI and unstable). Photoshop Elements, although a learning curve is needed, is excellent photo editing tool.
- Unless you have to print a HiRes photo over 8x10's, use 300dpi: you'll get the same results as higher resolutions, and is much faster (scanning a color print at 300dpi is ~30sec, compared to over 5min at 1600dpi.
- If you scan at 1600dpi/48bit, be prepared for huge amount of computer resources for processing the image, both by TWAIN and Photoshop. I have a 2.2GHz P4, 1GB memory, and when I tried to scan a large photo at 1600dpi, about 500MB of memory was used (good thing TWAIN displays how much mem is needed prior to the scan). Photoshop's performance was also degraded.
- After some experimentation, I'm getting best results by making some pre-scan enhancements via TWAIN (mainly Gamma & Color adjustments), and add final touches with Photoshop. Assuming you have the time to spend, this will be a fun thing to do, and will feel great when you see that with a decent photo printer you can produce better photos than your originals!
- The scanner works fine with XP. Its drivers are not certified by Microsoft for XP, (which means you have to manually install the drivers that come with the scanner), but so far I had no problems.
I think this is one of the best buys I made. The only concern I can think of, is its size compared to other scanners (shouldn't be a problem to most of you, unless you live in an apartment in Manhattan as I do...). You can get a scanner at half price or less, but if you need to digitize your photos and slides, this is the way to go.

HP Photosmart Premium Wireless e-All-in-One (CN503A#B1H) Review

HP Photosmart Premium Wireless e-All-in-One (CN503A#B1H)
Average Reviews:

There are many qualities that should be considered when rating a printer. This printer is nearly perfect in all of them. First is ease of setup. Setting up this printer was a breeze. I put it on the table, plugged it in, turned it on and the printer took over from there. The screen told me what to do and when to do it. Installing the cartridges was simple. It hooked up to my Wi-Fi system easily (no cables needed) and was ready to go in a few minutes. Wi-Fi is great, letting you carry the printer around the house so it's always near you and your laptop as you go from the kitchen to the family room. Quality of prints? The prints were as good as the prints professionally developed that are sitting in my photo albums. (I did use the HP glossy paper supplied with the printer.) And the scanner works quickly and with excellent quality.
The printer has some cool features that let you perform some functions without using a computer. Need a last minute greeting card? Bored and want a quick game of Sudoku? Planning a trip and need a map? (MapQuest, not google maps, though.) The printer has a small screen that lets you pick a nice selection of applications and when HP releases their API to write apps I'm sure there will be plenty more available.
There were a couple of odd little problems. When I moved the printer the first time, the apps were having trouble accessing some websites until I ran through the setup again. The touchscreen takes a little getting used to and I found myself starting apps when I was trying to scroll past them. But this was a minor issue and after a little getting used to I had no further problem.
What it comes down to is that this is the best printer I have ever owned. The print quality is amazing and really that is what any printer comes down to in the end. For a home printer, it would be hard to find anything better.

WizCom SuperPen Professional, Portable Business Library Review

WizCom SuperPen Professional, Portable Business Library
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Wizcom SuperPen Professional because it could scan many pages of text and had an on-board dictionary that can pronounce words. The SuperPen Professional concept is fantastic, but it did not work as easily as I would have liked. (...), I would expect the SuperPen not to be so cumbersome to operate.
My first problem was getting the SuperPen Professional to link to my computer using the included Serial connector cable so I could upload scanned text to my computer. Although I loaded the software from the included CD-ROM on to my new Windows XP computer which had very few other applications or devices loaded on it, the computer could not connect to the pen. I followed the instructions to set both the pen and computer's baud rate to 115200, but this didn't resolve the problem. The Wizcom website suggested downloading the latest software version, but I couldn't find a link to download the applicable software. An email to Tech Support explained that the lastest software version is available at:
http://www.wizcomtech.com/Wizcom/support/updates.asp?fid=139&pfid=177&mid=10
and scroll down to Install or upgrade your Desktop by downloading and running the QuickLink Desktop installation program (4.9 Mb). Click on the link and save the file to your hard drive.
Once the file is saved to your hard drive, double-click it's icon and follow the instructions.
A call to Tech Support resolved my connection problem. It turned out that I needed to have the flow control on my computer's serial port set to hardware flow control. This was easy enough to do. I just wish that this advice had been published in the manual or on the web site. Ultimately, I did get the computer connection to work with the included serial port.
When connecting, I got an error in the Quicklink Desktop software until I disabled an option for Microsoft Outlook on the QuickLink Desktop application.
I'm having difficulty getting accurate scans with this pen when scanning articles in trade magazines. The articles have fairly small text that is divided into three narrow columns. Since I have to scan each short line separately, it is quite time-consuming to scan selections from an article. I often have to scan three lines to capture a complete sentence. When I couple the slowness of the scanning process with the effort needed to correct mis-spelled or incorrectly read scans, it becomes faster to use a computer to re-type my notes than it is to scan them. The user interface on the pen for making corrections on this device is awkward.
The dictionary feature is nice, but it was more of a hassle to properly scan the word in question than what I wanted to go to to get a definition. Perhaps a separate electronic dictionary where you could type in the word would be easier.
I got the best results when holding the SuperPen at a 90 degree angle to the text.
I used the scanner to scan content from a book, and found that the scanner was more efficient when scanning pages with longer lines of text than it did when I scanned magazine articles.
The SuperPen Professional is a great concept, but I prefer that it was easier to operate.

Wacces MINI HANDY HAND-HELD PORTABLE SCANNER 600dpi Review

Wacces MINI HANDY HAND-HELD PORTABLE SCANNER 600dpi
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great scanner. Very small and light. It works fast and the image quality is good. Some things to note: The batteries it came with were dead, leading me to believe intially that the product was faulty. But if this should happen to you, just pop in a fresh pair and you're good to go. Also, there is no internal memory for scanned items, so to do any scanning whatsoever, you need the SD card. Best get that along with purchasing the scanner.
The scanner is perfect for the office or quickly capturing an image or two off a book page, however, although small and thin, don't expect it to get into those hard to reach corners of large books. Though designed to get to most places other scanners cannot, to truly scan an entire book, you'll need to separate the binding in which case you'll be just as well off with a flat bed scanner. But the scanner is still a good accessory for the student on the go.
Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase and recommend this product.

This is the first bear tracker I have seen that did not come set up for 12 volt.(And, I was not informed of this by the seller.) I had to buy a converter. For the first week I used it, it never alerted at all. Then after one week it stopped working altogether. I will never buy used electronic items through Amazon again. I tried, unsuccessfully, to get some kind of return label for this item. It is currently sitting in my garage.

I have a Microtek scanner and just downloaded the latest drivers. It turns out Microtek wants a program called Scan Finder to load at every start-up, and there is no way to disable this. The product works satisfactorily, but for my money, I will purchase something else. Something that doesn't create such a nuisance, and isn't so invasive.

So far, this is a great scanner. It has easy to use software, and it is really fast and quiet. The built in slide scanner works great - the easiest scanner I have had to scan slides. However - there are bugs in the software that keep the buttons from working. I have Windows XP, and it recognizes when the buttons are pressed, but the software does nothing. I called HP support and they said that it is a known problem and there will be a fix. When that fix comes out and the buttons work, I will give this 5 stars...

Pacific Image PrimeFilm 7250uPro3 for Windows and Mac Review

Pacific Image PrimeFilm 7250uPro3 for Windows and Mac
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This scanner is exactly what I was looking for--a scanner that will scan in rolls of negatives and slides (one at a time). After trying it for two weeks, I have concluded that the hardware is excellent and very capable, but you will need other than the OEM software package (CyberView) to fully exploit the capabilities. The biggest problem with CyberView is that it is completely unstable--it crashes all the time (I'm using Vista Home Premium). Furthermore, while I could get an excellent scan from slides, I could not with 100 ISO negatives. I did contact the manufacturer--they were attentive and took in my list of problems with their software, but they have not fixed anything (but I hear there is a new software release coming out "soon"). After trying both VueScan and SilverFast, I found that the scanner produces excellent images from both slides and negatives, so plan on buying one of these packages at a cost of $50-100 (depending on which version you want). Both of the products are 100% stable and fully exploit the hardware capabilities of this scanner.
Follow-up 12-30-09:
Well, all is not going well with this scanner after using it more extensively. It exhibits a color shift or streaking problem on the left half of some scanned-in slides and nearly all scanned-in negatives. The manufacturer has sent two "tested" replacement units and they have the same problem. I installed the scanner on another computer and it still has the same problem. The manufacturer says I'm the only one reporting the problem, so they are not showing any urgency in fixing it. SilverFast using multi-exposure seems to be able to remove the problem on negatives but not slides. Anyone else experiencing this? So at this point I can no longer recommend this scanner until the problem gets resolved (if ever!). If this problem gets solved, I would highly recommend the scanner when using VueScan and SilverFast software.
Follow-up 4-2-10
This scanner never worked. The color shift or streaking problem was never resolved--all three units I tried did this. I also installed the scanner on two other computers and the same problem was there as well. Furthermore, I never got batch scanning of a roll of film to ever work--it always crashed regardless of what software I used. The manufacturer bought it back from me and I then bought an Epson V700 from Amazon. The Epson produces much better images overall and is very stable. I'm using VueScan exclusively with it. I do NOT recommend the PrimeFilm 7250Pro3 scanner.

Lexmark Impact S305 Wireless Multifunction Inkjet Printer Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After building my latest computer I discovered that the GIGABYTE, GA-EP45-UD3P P45 775 R motherboard did not have a serial connector anymore. Rather than to mess with serial to USB conversion schemes, I decided to put my still perfectly functional Epson Stylus 760 out to pasture. After seeing the [...] reviews and the price, I got the Lexmark S305. It virtually set itself up as soon as I had power and the USB cable connected. It ran a complete self test, and was up and ready for more, before I even loaded the included CD. It's fast, ready to go in seconds, after I hit the power switch, and for my limited printing and scanning needs, it is perfect. I never use printers to reproduce photos, there are better and more professional ways to do that. I noticed just one little oddity, that is far from a show stopper. When I switched it to B&W, it still reproduced colors that were on the original. It is fast, way faster than what it replaced. I like the fact that it can use WiFi, and I also like the HD card and flash memory ports. Cnet pinged on the minimal display screen, but also said that if you need more of a display, you will have to buy a much more expensive printer. I never had a LCD display at all, so I don't miss it, and the small screen it does have, provides whatever info I need. The only minor complaint I have, since I use the USB connection rather than WiFI at this time, was that the included USB cable was too short for my particular equipment layout. Luckily I had an extension cable around and did not have to rearrange equipment.

I have waited many many years for the perfect all in one COLOR LASER....and this is it + more! I bought mine from a local store and have had it about a week. It comes in a huge box, but don't worry, this MFC is large but not too large compared to the other Brother mono laser all-in-ones (of which I have owned three over the years). The print quality is EXCELLENT and very fast for full color (21 pages per minute). My only initial concern was that it creased envelopes when printing on envelopes......but after consulting the manual there are fuser tension adjustment switches that solves that for perfect envelope printing (Settings, A, B and Envelope). I had compared many all-in-one color laser machines for many years (including recent ones from Xerox and HP). I was surprised that HP hadn't come out with a great, feature rich one yet. Brother beat HP to the punch and it is a knockout for sure. I am replacing a higher end Minolta color laser with flatbed scanner, a Brother MFC mono, and an HP mono workhorse with this ONE MFC-9840CDW!!! I am very very picky with print quality but this one is great! Bonus features are built-in duplex scanning, duplex printing, and wireless network capability! The replacement supply costs are also very reasonable and lower than most of the other color laser brands. Brother truly has a winner on its hand with the MFC-9840CDW!!! Thank you Brother....I LOVE IT!

The Dimage model I have is a bit earlier than this one, but I thought you'd like to know about Minolta's driver update practices. For my Dimage scanner, Minolta chooses not to update the driver from XP to Vista, effectively tuning my scanner into an $800 brick. Thanks for nothin fellas.

Combining impressive hardware technology with versatile software applications, the Minolta Dimâge Scan Multi II film scanner is indispensable for both imaging professionals and avid amateurs. Its software driver offers nearly 600 automatic settings in nine categories with additional customization easily possible. Working with a variety of Macintosh operating systems, it functions equally well on Windows 98, 98, and NT 4.0, connecting through a simple USB port.
Standard usage permits up to six sleeved or four mounted slides. Optional accessories include the AD-100 adapter and the SC-100 slide feeder, both of which improve productivity by allowing you to scan up to 50 images in one batch. An additional timesaver is Multi Sample Scanning, which quickly reduces the random noise present with scanned images. Using RGB sensors that scan images line by line, the finished images have a maximum resolution up to 2,820 dpi, ensuring finely grained results in print sizes up to 8 by 10 inches. Taking the extra time to use features like Digital ROC (Reconstruction of Color) and GEM (Grain Equalization Management) virtually guarantees perfect clarity in all your photos.
With all these advanced functions, the scanner remains relatively easy to use with a simple window- and tab-based interface that allows you to control everything from color balance to histogram compensation. --Jill Lightner

Bot my first Travelscan Nov 2003 - I use is all the time and keep it right by my notebook computer. Still works good as the day I bot it.
- A few problems: It doesn't like staples. It requires cleaning if you try to scan dirty things or wet ballpoint pen ink. It can scratch photos (use the included sleeve to save your photos).
- Now I have an 2nd notebook computer and want the same convenience.
- If you wonder how to clean it, either follow manufacturer's directions or do what I do: Spray Windex on plain white sheet of paper as it's feeding into the scanner - thick paper works best 24+ lb.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 Clr 18PPM/36IPM Dupl Scanner Review

Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 Clr 18PPM/36IPM Dupl Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this scanner to improve the operation of my CPA office (consulting/audit practice), and to get rid of a good part of (roughly 40 crates of) files I have accumulated over my career. Before making this purchase I reviewed the CPA Computer report Accountants Guide to Going Paperless, the AICPA IT section whitepapers, I attended a few paperless workshops, and I read Amazon reviews of earlier Fujitsu products and Visioneer products. My unit serial number was #5XX, so mine is one of the first of this model sold. This review is based on only one week of experience using the S500, but I think it is better to share this information now than to wait until I have more to report.
The S500 appears to be similar to the previous model the FI5110EOX2 which has been heavily, and positively, reviewed on Amazon and also in the references listed above. Differences between the S500 and the earlier 5110 are as follows -
* Integration with ABBY OCR, so the S500 can produce searchable PDF's and other formats!!! This was a major limitation with the 5110EOX2 which could only produce graphic PDFs. The ABBY OCR is not perfect, but hopefully gets enough keywords right to make the document findable.
* One touch scan to PDF, to Word, to Excel, to Power Point, to ScanSnap Organizer (which produces searchable PDFs), and to Cardminder (for business cards).
* Inclusion of Adobe Acrobat 7.0!
* 20% improved scan speed (up to 16 pages per minute, with a 50 page feed bin), and the ability to append consecutive batches to the same PDF file. In practice I think I will often be using highest resolution (Excellent, 1200dpi/600dpicolor) mode with max compression, which is significantly slower - about 25sec/page scan time and 10sec/page OCR time on my new Compaq presario laptop. The lower resolution modes (going down to Fastest, 300dpi/150dpicolor) might be sufficient for older print documents without marks or illustrations, that do not have much value to me, that I doubt I will ever look at again but can't just toss.
* Automatic document size detection so you can feed batches of mixed size documents. (plus all the document handling features from the 5110, including reasonably good automatic handling of mixed single sided and double sided documents)
* File compression which is claimed to reduce file sizes 20-50 percent.
* A significant cash manufacturers [censored] for purchases from authorized dealers is currently available for this product through the Fujitsu website.
Here are the limitations I have seen with this scanner so far (4000 scans of documents and business cards) -
* It sometimes feeds two sheets at once, most often the first two sheets in a batch, so I will have to keep my eye on the first sheets it feeds. If the documents have page numbers it will be easy to know how many documents I have fed and compare this with the scanner count. If the documents do not have page numbers I will need to count them by hand, or keep I very close eye on the scanner throughout the scan, or just live with a very occasional missed page due to the mechanism feeding two sheets at once.
* I assume staples will damage the mechanism, and so I will have to carefully inspect all documents for staples before scanning.
* The OCR is alright but not perfect. There are frequent OCR mistakes when scanning business cards, and several mistakes per page on spreadsheets (7's sometimes become 1's, 5's sometimes become S's, 0's sometimes become O's, missing decimal points, extra junk characters etc). White text on black background and black text on grey background have poor results. Fortunately the graphic image is retained in the searchable PDF, and is also retained in Cardminder, so that even when the OCR is not perfect I can still see what the original looked like.
* If a spreadsheet had relationships between the columns, I can recalculate the relationship and compare my recalculation with the scanned information, which seems to detect almost all errors in scans to Excel.
* Scan to Word often results in a slightly different format or positioning of text than the original document.
* The scanner does not support TWAIN (a uniform driver interface for scanners), instead it has a proprietary interface. Based on my research, the proprietary interface is better than TWAIN, so if the included software meets your needs then this is not a limitation. However if you absolutely must use some 3rd party software that requires TWAIN then you should not buy this scanner!
* The PDF files produced by the system are not fully compressed, even with maximum compression selected. Running PKZIP does not increase the compression significantly, however in Adobe 7.0 I click File | Reduce File Size | For Adobe 7.0 and subsequent, and files compress perhaps by up to 80% ! This additional Adobe compression claims to have no loss of visual quality and is fast for PDFs of a few megabytes, but quite slow for huge PDFs, and seems to produce much more additional compression on high resolution scans than on low resolution scans. Why can't Fujitsu/Abby use this Adobe 7.0 super compressed mode to begin with or add it to their batch process manager? I have not figured out how to get the system to reduce this annoying extra process step.
* After installing the scanner, Outlook caused my XP system to hang three times a day with a fatal "STOP ERROR" causing a blue screen and a reboot. I called tech support, and found it very easy to reach a live person who listened to me sympathetically and had some useful troubleshooting information, but did not have an immediate fix and took me down a few false paths. Microsoft crash analysis was worse than useless and incorrectly concluded that the problem was in my graphics driver which was not the case. In the end, through trial and error, I diagnosed the problem myself. It turned out that the Blue Soleil bluetooth USB wireless networking drivers installed in my system and plugged into Outlook were incompatible with something in the S500 package, perhaps with the S500 drivers or the Adobe 7.0 Outlook plugin. Uninstalling Blue Soleil caused the problem to go away completely.
* Every now and then (2%?) of scans, when I press the green scan button or when I click continue in the scansnap manager window, the image scanning and file saving window comes up on my screen, but the feed motor never starts turning. The system appears locked up, and the only way to reliably start scanning again seems to be to disconnect and reconnect the power plug on the back of the scanner.
* When scanning paper that is rough or perforated, sometimes the ejecting page will push the previously scanned page out of its neat stack in the output pile, and in the worst case spill several pages from the output pile onto the floor! I have learned to place the scanner at the rear of a deep desk, and to set a block at the front of the desk at the front end of output pile to push back against any paper that tries to fall out.
* I was able to use the software to convert some previously scanned graphic PDFs to searchable PDF's, however the Abby manual does claim that only files produced by ScanSnap are supported (though I suppose one could always print a hardcopy and then scan it again using ScanSnap).
Despite the problems listed above, this system is helping me better communicate with my clients, and in the long term I think it will significantly reduce the clutter in my office.

This laser will project the word "Security" when turned on, I have it connected to my alarm system, and set up in a way that it displays the word on the hood when the alarm is active, This is highly visible at night, but almost none existent during day light.
