(More customer reviews)I have recently purchased this HP Officejet 5110 all-in-one and was very happy with it. It has some strange quirks that I cannot seem to find the answer for, am waiting for HP support to get back to me. Sometimes during e-postage printing it will say it is "printing" in the dialog box and just sits there and doesn't print. I have Windows XP Professional and the software seemed to go in okay. The paper feed makes a very loud noise when the paper isn't shoved in all of the way or you forgot to put paper in. When just wanting to make a quick copy of something, it makes you go through a 6 item menu just to make a text copy! The print problem also happens when trying to print text off of a web page that usually printed with no problems before. Also on the HP website it states they are working on an updated driver for Windows XP for this printer. Gee I wonder??? And why did they issue the Officejet 6110 so quickly after this release? Maybe because this was a "trial model"????
Who knows, I will just hold onto it and wait for the driver.

HP PSC 2175 Multifunction Review

(More customer reviews)Excellent printer. After some comparison shopping, I found this printer was the best value for the price.
It's an "all-in-one" device that does printing, scanning and coping (color or black/white). It hooks up to your PC or notebook.
The print quality is excellent, especially for photos (I was pleasantly surprised with the incredible quality of the color photos - you'll be able to print color photos just as good as the camera store)
The copier is excellent and I especially like the fact it's a "flat-bed" style copier/scanner. There are some Copiers that only let you copy a piece of paper, but this device is like a normal office copy machine (but much, much smaller) where you can lift the lid up and place a book on top of it, which is useful if you need to copy a page from a book you own, like your cookbook or hiking book. I can now keep my cookbook in good condition and don't have to carry a heavy hiking or touring book on a trip - I just bring a copy of the pages I need for a trip. I recently found this very useful when touring a city. In fact, it was so useful that I'm going to look into eBooks for my iPAQ for trips. With this printer, you can scan a page from a hardcopy book in order to get it into your hand-held (by scanning it into your PC and then moving it to your hand-held). Though I would prefer to buy eBooks software for my iPAQ that has this information organized like a library.
The scanner works very well. It's especially useful if you want to scan something important into your PC to save forever. I tend to collect a lot of papers, so this scanner really helps me cut down on the amount of space I'm was using to save hardcopy papers. This scanner lets me toss out papers I would normally be saving, so no more growing heaps of piles of papers on my desk. I scan papers into my PC for storage and then toss the paper out.
The unit is conveniently small, and yet it can copy up to A4 size paper (which is larger than legal paper). Sizewise, it fits nicely on my small one-drawer filing cabinet where I used to keep my LaserJet 6L, and there's still room for my large conferencing phone.
Now that I have a copier, I no longer have to run to work or Kinko's to make a copy of my tax forms. Too many times I've left important personal papers at our copier at work (embarrassing!)
After buying the product, I discovered it has a really neat feature that I now use all the time: it supports four different types of memory cards (CompactFlash, SD, SmartMedia, and Memory Stick.)
I have a digital camera and an HP iPAQ 2215, which both use CompactFlash card. This means, I can take my CompactFlash card from either my camera or iPAQ and pop it into the printer and print photos without bothering with the PC. It's fast & easy. I really like it.
My iPAQ 2215 acts like a portable photoalbumn sometimes, so it's nice to be able to print photos out by simply popping the CompactFlash card into the printer. This printer is a great gift for your Mom & Dad if they like to get a lot of photos from you. When you visit your parents, you can show them your photos stored on your iPAQ and print out the ones they want by popping the compact flash into the printer. It's as easy as that and it's photo quality too.
You can upload your photos from either an iPAQ or camera to your PC by simply popping the compact flash into the printer and pressing Scan to PC. I find this useful when I want to have a large view of my photos stored on my iPAQ - I move them to my PC from the iPAQ by popping the compact flash into the printer. I find this easier than hooking my camera up to the PC (where the photos originate.) (I don't always have my camera plugged into my PC, so find it easier to pop the CompactFlash into the printer rather than hooking up the camera.)
It's a very easy printer to use and to install - just pop the CD in and click "okay" and plug in the cord.
A few small things I wish it had (though, no other printers on the market seem to have this either, so it's minor): I wish I could plug my Creative Labs camera directly into the front of the printer. I also wish iPAQ 2215 could plug directly into the front of the printer so I could print the photos or files directly stored on my iPAQ. (But this isn't critical because I can do it anyway by just popping the iPAQ's compactflash into the printer). But one thing I wish it had: I would love to be able to plug a Memory ThumbDrive (by USB2) into the front of the printer in order to directly print photos stored on the ThumbDrive. (A thumbdrive is a tiny stick that fits onto a key chain - you can plug into any PC by a USB2 connection - it's like a miniature, portable hard drive.) Basically, all three of these ideas would involve HP designing a USB2 input into the front of their printers (something I would think they could easily do, but for some reason, no printer on the market does this yet.) These three ideas are items no printer seems to do, so it's minor. And I can print from my ThumbDrive by simply plugging it into my PC or laptop.
After doing comparison shopping, I found this all-in-one printer, copier, and scanner to be the best device on the market and it's very inexpensive for all you get. I'm really happy with this product and just love it!
This is an excellent printer, copier, and scanner - you can't go wrong with it.

(More customer reviews)For eighty bucks, this little 1410 is a deal. Print speed and quality are both good very for the price, and the scanner is surprisingly good. The unit is compact enough to fit on a shelf beside my desk, and it operates quietly, too.
Some here have complained about the 1410's ink cartridges being small and short-lived. To that I say anyone who prints in volume will find an inkjet printer isn't going to be the most economical choice. In my experience, I've found the 1410's ink to last a reasonable time, and the cartridges are less expensive than those required by two other printers I have.
Yes, the software does take forever to install, but it's very easy to do, and here's a tip. On the HP support website, a "basic" version of the software is available (drivers and controls, without the image editing and other fluff). It still isn't speedy to install, but is faster than the disk that comes with the printer. The downside of any multifunction machine from any manufacturer is that the software that comes with it tends to be quite bloated.
Pay more money, and you'll get more speed, better print quality, and lower printing cost-per-page maybe, but the 1410 has been just about perfect for my purposes, and didn't cost me much in the process. It has been reliable so far, I get good print and scan results with it, and I recommend it highly.

Whistler Xtr-690se High Performance Radar Detector Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this radar detector about a month ago, and so far I have been impressed. At roughly $160, it is very cheap when compared to some of the other brands that are out there. The sensitivity is excellent on KA and K band. Unfortunately, in Southern California I have yet to be alerted to a K band threat that actually is a patrol car/motorcycle. KA band seems to be the only indicator of a patrol unit.
Laser has been activated many times, of these times I have used the LSID which gives the Pulse Per Second ID on the display. They have been in the 900's most of the time with one alert in the 600's. The 600 one was a police car, but the 900's were false alerts. So make sure you use LSID to make sure it is a real laser threat, especially if you drive the same route everyday.
False-alerts are a big problem with this detector though. I have driven on the freeway with this detector for a while now, and the K band alerts too frequently. Driving through random parts of the city activate a full strength K band alert at level 9, only to shut off completely half a second later. I have no idea what causes this. Of course, the occasional speed trap off to the side of the freeway will alert to a K band as well but it will steadily increase to level 9 and slowly back to level 1 (3..5..4..7..8..9...6...5...2...1.....). This shows that the source is stationary, and it normally will be a gun either on the freeway or just a few hundred feet off the side of the highway.
For the price, you can't beat all of the features though. The KA band sensitivity, especially with the KAID feature, is excellent. It picks up KA as far as the 400 dollar models, with a frequency display. In So Cal, 34.7 is the key. The red display is perfect for me, its dim enough to live with daily, though not at all bright enough to see during the day. I had the xtr-695 previously (it broke) and the color display is not necessary.
Overall a great radar detector if you're on a budget. If you aren't, save and get the Bel Sti Driver, the performance on that thing is insane, and false alerts as non-existent. I would not recommend the Passport 9500 series, there have been too many complaints with it for the money. I don't think they have perfected the GPS technology yet.

3 City Modes/Highway Mode Highway mode provides full audio and visual warning of laser/radar systems while maintaining full sensitivity. Highway mode is the default setting of all Whistler's laser/radar detectors. City mode helps reduce the annoyance of automatic door openers and burglar alarm alerts by providing an initial alert (same distance as Highway Mode) then remaining quiet unless the signal strength becomes very strong. When the signal increases the unit will alert briefly to notify you of the change in signal strength.
Stay Alert The Stay Alert feature is designed to test a driver's alertness. Alert Priority When two or more signals are received at the same time, the alert priority is: Laser, VG-2, Speed Radar, Safety Radar.
Example: If X band is alerting, then suddenly a VG-2 signal is detected, the VG-2 warning will override the X band alert.
Vehicle Battery Saver Mode The Vehicle Battery Saver Mode automatically shuts off your detector within 3 hours if you forget to turn it off. The timer is reset if the detector is turned off, unplugged or any button is pressed before the 6 hours have expired. The detector will alert you with an audible and visual warning before it shuts off.
Safety Warning System--SWS This relatively new radar is not for speed detection at all, it is used to keep you informed of highway safety. Transmitters are installed and programmed (for example: in emergency vehicles) to make you aware of possible situations that may require your attention, such as: ambulance vehicles that are moving or stationary, road hazards ahead, road construction delays or detours, etc.

HP PSC 1210 Multifunction Review

As expected of these All-in-one's not all features are equally good, so I'll review each of them separately.
Printer: A+
This is real Photo-printer. I printed 3 4"x6" photos captured by my digital camera at 1600x1200 resolution, on the FREE sample Premium Plus Photo Glossy provided. Result? Absolute TOP notch. There's simply no way anyone can tell that the photos were not developed at a Kodak studio.
Copier: A-
You can use the copier without having to turn on your computer. I copied a color photo (of a face) in black and white mode, and it looked pretty decent. Document copy was excellent. Copying great photos (sunset) is not so good because of the scanner... see next item.
Scanner: B-
I tried scanning a stunning sunset photo taken from my SLR film camera. The result was disappointing. There are noticeable scan lines in the scanned image. It looked bad when "Set as desktop background". Didnt even try printing it. Text scanning was ok though...
Package: A-
Contents include: Printer, Power-cord, Free Glossy paper samples, good imaging software. All you need after getting your printer is a USB cable (why can't they bundle it??). I picked up a $7 USB2 6ft cable at local [store].
Overall Verdict: A
For the price, it beats HP's own photo printers hands down. (and they don't even copy/scan). So if you need a photo printer, with a decent copier and ok scanner, PSC1210 is the way to go. Not to mention that its the smallest All-in-one available. However, if you're looking to scan top-notch images to burn on a CD, invest in a standalone scanner. My friend has a epson perfection which scanned the sunset shot just fine.

Cisco-Linksys WPS54GU2 Wireless-G Print Server for USB 2.0 Review

(More customer reviews)After reading the mixed reviews for this, I still decided to try the Linksys Wireless Print Server. Although this is more expensive than the wired print server, I thought that it may be nice to locate my printers (one is USB and the other is parallel/USB) and wireless router in different locations. Neither printer is multi-function. I first tried a "wired" Linksys print server, but was unable to connect (2) USB printers using a hub - plus the price of the print server and the hub was nearly the same as the wireless device.
So far so good, but there are some things that I suggest you do when installing this device. These are based on personal experience, which has been a process of educated trial and error. An IT professional may do things differently, but if you were an IT professional, you probably wouldn't be reading these reviews. My network is almost entirely Linksys components (wireless router, wireless adapter, and print server), although I am using the network cards that were pre-installed with those computers that are hard wired to the router.
First, disable your firewall. This will allow you to test the compatibility of the printers, the network, and the print sever without the extra component to worry about. Once everything is up and running, you can enable your firewall and tweak any networking restrictions at that time.
Secondly, when configuring the router (which is the first step), you will need to have this "wired" to your router. This is part of the instructions, and should not come as a surprise. However, make sure you leave this "wired" until you have installed the print server drivers and software on all your networked computers. The install utility seems to have trouble finding the print server if you have disconnected the hard wire connection, even if the print server lights indicate it is already on the wireless LAN.
Thirdly, if you are using MAC address filtering, temporarily disable this. One you get the print server set up and running, you can find its MAC address using the web utility or the BI-admin utility, and then restore the filtering after adding the print server. However, if you want to use the web based configuration utility (like you use with your router), please follow the instructions in the following paragraph.
Fourth, once you have installed everything per the instructions, I recommend the following: give your print server a fixed IP address on your network (e.g. 192.168.1.171). My experience is this: If your router uses DHCP to assign IP addresses to your networked computers and servers, the print server does not always communicate back to the router, and your print server will sometimes "disappear" from your network after computers have been turned off and on. Something to do with the order the computers and servers are turned on. Setting this to a fixed address has cleared up those problems for me. Also, because the print server's address is fixed, you can access the web based configuration utility by typing in the same IP address each time.
Fifthly, find the MAC address using the web based or BI-admin utility. Now, if you are using these, reinstate your MAC address filtering, adding your print server's address to the allowed list.
Sixth, test and test again. Reboot your computers and unplug and re-plug your print server. Send documents to all your printers from all your computers - not just printer test pages. Print actual documents from a "Wordpad" or similar program.
Seventh, enable your firewall, remembering to enable access to your print server at the fixed IP address used above.
Eighth, test again just to make sure. If it doesn't work now, you know it's the network settings of your firewall.
This has seemed to work for me.

Powerslide 3650 Review

My parents have over 6,000 slides, I have reels and reels of slides that my grandfather took, my brother has a few thousand, and I have probably a few thousand myself. This device is a lifesaver! Yes, it sometimes jams. Yes, the software has it's problems. Yes, it's slower than slow. However, in the end it does a good job and best of all it does the scanning mostly without any help. We got this in Fall 2007 and my parents have finished their 6,000, and I'm working through mine and my grandfather's.
This scanner comes with a straight tray that holds 50 slides. We wanted the ability to pack one tray while the other is running so we bought two circular ones from the manufacturer that each hold 100 slides. We highly recommend doing this -- the circular ones jam much less than the included straight one. The scanner does about 9 or 10 slides per hour.
We're using this scanner on Mac OS X using Firewire -- haven't tried it with a PC or using the USB connection. We've used it on both Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) and 10.5 (Leopard) -- make sure that you download the Leopard update from the manufacturer's website if you're on Leopard. The software itself is quirky, and it has a very unintuitive interface that I suppose shows it's Windows origins.
The typical process for setting it up
--------------------------------------------
1. Close all unnecessary apps (My mom needs to do this on her system with 1GB of RAM. I have 3GB and don't have to do this.)
2. Turn on scanner (takes a minute or two)
3. Start CyberView X software
4. Load tray into scanner. Use arrows on scanner to line up with notch on circular reel showing #1 slide.
5. From Scan menu, select Scan, then select Multi-Scan to File
6. Enter the number of slides in this batch.
7. Select where you want to write the scan files.
8. Select file type (TIF or JPG), and if JPG, also select output quality (Good, Better, Best).
9. Click Ok
There's two types of jams: 1) the slide didn't make it into the scanner, so the scan is of nothing! 2) more serious jams when it can't move the slide. In this case, it just shuts down. We have yet to have a slide damaged by this machine.
When we finish a batch, we check for any duds -- scans that turned out like white frames because of a jam -- then we rescan just those duds. The scanner has the capability to let you feed individual slides in manually, and we have to do that on rare occasions.
Tips to reduce jamming
--------------------------
1) Put 'em in straight. Take care to put the slides straight into the slot in the tray.
2) Unbend. Make sure the slides aren't warped or tweaked. If they are try making them straight again. We had some 40-50 year old cardboard mounts that had been in Honeywell trays for about that long that were bent.
3) Trim the mounts. We had some old cardboard mounts that weren't mounted correctly -- the two halves didn't quite match. This made the mount a bit larger than it should be so we used scissors to carefully trim the extra edges. This made the slides fit better into the tray without bending or going in crooked.
As for the image -- we've seen some banding, and the colors don't seem as rich as the original slides, but that can be fixed with post processing. See the examples I uploaded.
Summary
------------
This scanner takes some getting used to as it whirrs, grinds, and make other noises, and you'll probably need to rescan some that got jammed, but over all it's a great time saver!

(More customer reviews)I was a bit skeptical of purchasing another Lexmark after such bad luck with the others I have purchased at the company I work for. The sale price was pretty decent & this printer had a lot of functions I needed especially the ability to scan. After deciding to go ahead & pick this one up as well as a few extra ink carts, which were cheaper than the lex16&26's my previous printer used, I brought it back to the office to setup.
It didn't take long to rip into the packaging & get it all hooked up. When I went to install the printer however that was a different problem. The setup was slow & would sit at the same screen for 10 - 20 minutes at a time before finally disappearing & never returning. I'm the computer tech here & all my settings on my profile as well as locally on the machine are set for full access. I tried installing the software/drivers about 3 times before giving up & logging out. I logged into the local administrator account & tried the driver/software install again. Low & behold this time I had similar issues with long pauses between screens, but was greeted eventually with an option to start the driver install.
After finally getting it all setup I was able to finally give this puppy a run for the money. I've printed roughly 250 pages so far on these factory cartridges & am very surprised the ink hasn't run out on them yet. The colors come out very clear especially on pictures & when printing cd labels. On my previous printer (Lexmark z33) pictures would be fuzzy & the ink carts wouldn't last but maybe a week if that.
I haven't scanned anything really yet, but I did try to make a copy of a receipt & it came out looking blank. I'll have to test some other things, but so far as just a printer this machine has exceeded my expectations on the fact the ink consumption has been so slow & how fast my pages come out. Normally the ink they give you with a printer is a half-full cart you have to replace almost instantly.
If you're looking for a printer that doesn't guzzle ink & has a lot of nifty extra features, you might give this printer a shot.

I've been using this printer for nearly a year & the scan ability is fairly good. Most copies don't look identicle, they look slightly faded, but usually not too bad. The printing is still great on this printer & color photo prints are incredible. I've had to print about 500 full page photo's so far & it does a wonderful job. Unfortunately alot of ink is used up for pictures printed on photo paper. The paper sensing feature on the printer is a big help so you dont have to change it everytime, just when printing to legal now. This printer has been well worth the money & I definately would buy one for my home.

(More customer reviews)I'd finally had it with my 4-year-old Canon Multifunction (C555). The fax worked fine but the printer was unreliable, torpid and, because the cartridges kept drying up, frightfully expensive. Despite my wife's warning (she's been having trouble with HP-OSX compatibility issues), I opted for this HP 4215.
When it arrived, I was immediately cheered by a box that was less than half the size of the Canon's. Upon opening it, I was further encouraged by a handy yet complete printed manual. (The Canon's was all online, and the printed-out materials seemed like a life-time of reading.) In 10 minutes I was ready to go--cartridges installed, program installed on my Powerbook, telephone line, USB cable, power cord all hooked up. The unit seemed too light and compact, the set-up too easy and automatic, but I went to a Word document, clicked and waited. Not for long, because the printer not only handled the document in record time but presented me with copy that was sharper than any I'd ever seen.
Next I went on the internet, found a richly textured, page-sized color photo and clicked "print." Same result. The machine speedily delivered a bright yet detailed and subtle color print that was an improvement on the original, even with the cheap copy paper I was using.
My plan was to keep my workhorse Epson for the bulk of my printing and use the HP for faxing, copying, and scanning (all of which it does both better and more efficiently than my old Canon). But the HP is simply too good to be anything less than a starting player. I can't remember ever being more impressed with a device, especially one this complicated, and happier about a computer or office-related purchase.
In spite of my singular success with this particular model, I've learned not to make blanket judgements about a brand or manufacturer based on one particular experience, especially in this field of competitive, rapidly changing technology. My wife just gave up on her HP printer and exchanged it for a Canon.

(More customer reviews)We are a long-established, technology-based counsulting and services company. We have thirty computers and nine HP printers on the LAN. We bought two 6210s for use at work stations for light to medium use (5 - 30 pages per day).
We could not be more pleased with the quality of the printed pages and the operation, but avoid heavy use because of excessive ink cost per page. (This is the reason why the printer cost seems absurdly low.)
Scanner, printer, and fax all worked great. The unit is very, very compact and handsomely styled - a far cry from the earlier all-in-ones that these replaced. The paper feed tray could perhaps be improved. A small amount of care must be used to prevent stuffing the paper in too far.
Print cartidges have very little capacity. The color cartridge has a list price of $32.00 and yields 260 "standard" pages. That's 12 cents per page. For the same standard page our older HP R60 all-in-one delivers 690 pages for a list price of $40.00 or $0.06 per page. I have not investigated black printing costs; but the black cartridge is also small. Googling "cost per page" and printer model will get you the cost info from a third party.

(More customer reviews)This scanner is good and bad at the same time. It is horribly slow, but I'm using the pictures I'm scanning for a slideshow of pictures throughout my life at my Bar Mitzvah party, and the quality of the pictures are very good.
Be warned, scanning negatives on this scanner requires very high resoulution (but I think that this is the way with all scanners I'm not sure), and it takes a VERY VERY long time to scan. It took ten to twenty minutes depending on the settings for ONE PICTURE. They turned out in good quality, but I was highly dissatisfied with the time it took.
Overall, this scanner is pretty good. But if you are a person that needs pics in a hurry, this is not for you. But if you are creating a slideshow (like me) and have time for it, this scanner is a very good choice.

(More customer reviews)I was a bit nervous about buying this printer because there were no reviews yet on Amazon and my wife has had all kinds of software problems with an HP Photosmart printer that she bought last year (against the advice of dozens of Amazon reviewers). But after looking around a bit, I decided that the HP LJ3050 looked like the best all-in-one laser machine for the money. And I really loved my previous all-in-one, the HP LJ3100, which had served me well for 8 years.
I just received the product and installed it today, and the installation went smoothly (although it did take a while). The print quality is fine and the speed is an improvement over my old 3100. My only complaint about the print function so far is that the machine is kind of loud. The scan software doesn't seem quite as straightforward as the software for my 3100, but it does work just fine. I probably just need to get used to it. Copying is nice and quick. I haven't plugged the machine into a phone jack yet, so I won't comment on the fax features.
The machine is not quite as solidly built as my old 3100, but it is actually a little better than I expected. I would have to say that, overall, I am pleased with this product so far. My only complaint is that the box does not include the USB cable needed to connect the machine to your PC. I had to make a special trip out to the store to buy one, and it cost over $20. I went back and checked the outside of the box and could not find anything that clearly said "USB cable not included", so I feel like I have a right to be angry about it.

-Samsung packs a lot of value into their machines. I paid about $50 less than it is currently going for here.
-Network scanning actually works well!; unlike many network MFPs.(Buying a standalone network scanner that works this well would cost more than this machine-though it does not have auto duplex scanning like some costlier devices)
-Direct to USB scanning and direct from USB printing might be useful for some.
-Duplex printing works well and saves paper- more mid-range printers should come with this feature.
(note: if you have ever used a printer with duplexing capabilities before you will have no trouble enabling this feature.)
-Most setting are easily configurable with the web interface so that you need not scroll through multiple menus on the machine itself.
-Has powerful scan to email features usually only found on high end office machines.
-Handles standard envelopes better than I expected.
Cons:
-Samsung documentation is not for the uninitiated.
-By default it installs some not very useful programs (a quicklaunch toolbar and a printer status monitor)
-Does not support Postscript (you need to pay a little extra for the Samsung SCX-4828 Laser Multi-Function Printerfor this feature- that's the only difference between them).
-For some strange reason you cannot scan to B&W PDF directly from the machine. You can scan to color or grayscale PDF, or you can scan to B&W PDF from your computer, but not directly from the machine. No idea why.
-Generally, MFPs do not last as long as regular printers, and are a pain to fix if they break. Think of it this way: If the chance of a printer breaking within 3 years is 1/100, and the chance of a scanner breaking is 1/100, then the chance of a MFP breaking is 1/50.
Workarounds:
-If you connect this to your computer via USB (presumably you bought this for its network capabilities so you would normally have it connected via Ethernet) you can flash the device with the firmware from the 4828FN to enable postscript emulation. This will undoubtedly void your warranty. You can then manually install the 4828FN postscript printer driver and configure it to print to the correct port. (The only reason I did this is because samsung previously had incorrectly listed this machine as having PS support before I bought it)
-If you only need network scanning and printing (not faxing) and do your scanning with programs you already have (such as Acrobat or Omnipage) then I highly recommend installing only the printer and scanner drivers and forgetting about the rest.
-A generally good idea with network printers is to configure them to use a static IP address (outside the normally assigned range) even if your network is running on DHCP. This will potentially avoid many headaches down the line.
Bottom Line: A great value if you know what you need and know what you are doing.

It turns out Microtek wants a program called Scan Finder to load at every start-up, and there is no way to disable this. Epson Perfection 4180 Photo Scanner Review

PROS:
Costs under $200.
Scans negatives and transparencies--35mm, mounted slides, and 120.
Includes very easy-to-use-and-integrate software.

Makes scans that are very usable in Photoshop CS.
Is able to make scans that I don't need to mess with (for web, email) without using Photoshop.
CONS:
35mm holder allows filmstrip to buckle.
Minor software tweaks would be desirable.
No good way to store film holders when one of them is in use.
I'm an amateur photographer who develops his own film. I had been getting my film developed by an excellent, and inexpensive, local chain that also provided a CD-ROM of scanned images for each roll processed. Once I started developing my own b/w film, I wanted a scanner that could do decent scans so that I could continue to keep medium-resolution "contact sheets" on my PC. I thought that the 4180 might do the trick at a pretty inexpensive price point. I was right.
It scans well, within timeframes that are reasonable. I've read other reviews here, and I'm not sure what everyone expects of their scanners--but given your connection (USB 2.0, etc.) and whatever else you have going on, I think you'll find this scanner performs as expected. It takes a while to do medium-to-hi-res scans, but that's what I expect of a scanner. I expect it to transmit to my PC pretty darn quick, but the scanning part can take its time.
The scanner software does not always detect the framelines between 35mm frames correctly. I think this might be what another reviewer was referring to regarding black lines. Usually, re-previewing the set of frames corrects this. Worst case scenario, you just preview and scan the whole set of frames and then go back and scan that problematic one individually. It's really not a big deal.
If you're intending to scan a great deal of 35mm negatives, slides, or 120 transparencies/negatives quickly, then this is not the right scanner for you. The provided film holders don't hold a lot of frames. I do appreciate being able to scan 12 35mm negatives simultaneously, but when you're dealing with rolls of 24-36, it does take some time. Luckily you don't have to be present during most of the scanning process.
The 35mm frame is very good at holding the film, but because it isn't a sandwich of glass, it does not hold your film flat if it's not flat already. Artifacts in the resulting scan are common, especially at the ends of 35mm strips.
The software should have a way of overriding the "selection" of frames by the software. Usually it's accurate, but when it's not I'd rather not have to redo a single scan because the software selected a too-narrow area or one that overlaps two frames.
The enclosed software is very good. It includes a densitometer, editable histogram, and other tools for working with your scans. I have not worked much with the grain removal and dust/scratch removal tools, but I'm more comfortable working with those problems in Photoshop.
For excellent thumbnails and fast, very good printable scans, I've found this scanner to be excellent.

(More customer reviews)I thought the scanner was great, but the lamp went out just after 1 year after I bought it. So now all my scans have a rainbow line from top to bottom. Microtek's extent of technical support is reinstall the drivers, if that doesn't work you have to return it so we can repair it, because there are no authorized repair people out there, but us. They will not sell me the lamp, because they need to repair it themselves (they want the labor dollars). So, after I paid $1,400 for this thing a year ago I am going to have to pay another $200-300 for repair and shipping both ways.
