Opteka HD² Slide Copier for Canon Powershot G10 & G11 Digital Camera Review

Opteka HD² Slide Copier for Canon Powershot G10 and G11 Digital Camera
Average Reviews:

Bought this item to digitize both 35mm AND 110 slides. It will work easily for the 35, but I'll have to remount (or MacGyver) the 110's...regardless, I can do it all without the pricey scanner.
Note: this item includes the step ring (METAL) and the converter tube (ALSO METAL)as well as the shown slide copier. So twist the pieces together and it goes right on the G11...I was concerned that I'd have to go buy some step rings, convertor tubes (which are usually crappy plastic), but in fact they were included. Genius.
item also includes a little adaptor so you can fit 35mm film strips in as well...a nice bonus.

This is a screaming fast scanner. Sheet fed scanners are great for 1 purpose, scanning sheets, not thick stuff, not a multi-sized stack of stuff, and not slippery stuff!
Great for sales people, mortgage brokers, real estate companies and so forth.
There are Vista 32 and 64 bit drivers on Xerox's site.

Microtek ScanMaker i900 Flatbed Scanner Review

Microtek ScanMaker i900 Flatbed Scanner
Average Reviews:

I wanted a scanner that would scan any size film negative and paper too, but did not want to to pay a million bucks for it-This is the one! I know an antique dealer who gets these glass negatives from sales and estates and I have been able to place 4 of them on the pull-out drawer and scan them with great results. I have also scanned some old negatives from film cameras from the 1920s and 30s. The scanner has a large platten (legal size) for doing paper and a drawer like platten that pulls out from the bottom for doing slides and negatives. There are several inserts that will accept the different types of media. I have found that the 8x10 glass drawer is the most versitile and easiest to use.
The i900 comes with 2 different software packages for both Mac and Windows; Scan Wizard Pro, and Silverfast, professional scan software. I installed both of them but so far have found it easy enough to stick with just the first one. It has a very intuitive interface and I have had no problems at all. The "Digital Ice" technology is interesting and effective but it is slow- I have found it just as easy to do a regular scan and repair the photo myself in photoshop.
The only thing that might count against this thing is it's size- It's big. And it's heavy. It's dimensions are 15"x22"x6" and it weighs 30 lbs. So if a small footprint is something you have to have, forget this baby.
Installation was a snap- my Mac just loves my new scanner- and so do I. I'm real glad I bought it.

I shoot black & white 35 mm. Previously relied upon either a Polaroid SprintScan 4000 or drum scans. The 4870 produces gorgeous scans and is easy to use. I'm very happy with my purchase. SilverFast has proved to be a dissapointment for use with B&W negs. I would probably have purchased the regular 4870 vs. Pro version if I had it to do over again.

Xerox DocuMate 252 Review

Xerox DocuMate 252
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the first scanner I've owned that does everything fast and well. For the past several years I've been scanning paper files to hard disk, to the end of achieving a paperless life.
I bought 7 scanners between 1999 and 2005, including an Epson, an HP, 4 Visioneers, and the Xerox Documate 252. All were either sheet-fed or had document handlers. All but the Xerox Documate were fair to dismal.
I used several of the previous scanners with a succession of Macs, while using others on a PC. For Macintosh the HP scanner software always proved dysfunctional. It failed outright a signficant part of the time. The HP hardware was similarly afflicted. The document feeder choked on a high proportion of documents run through it (for reasons I could neither fathom nor correct). The Epson worked slightly better, but was slow and clunky. Its document feeder frequently stuck, and gagged on something as minor as a slight crease in the paper.
The Visioneers had these and other problems as well. Also, files created in the Windows environment on older versions of Paperport scanning software that was bundled with these scanners (Version 5.5, for example) almost always became corrupted in some way when I transferred them from a PC to a Mac, and vice versa. Therefore I had to keep my Mac and Windows scanned archives on separate computers.
When I bought a Xerox Documate 252, it proved head and shoulders above any scanner I had previously owned or even seen. [The Xerox Documate does share the Visioneer nameplate, but as far as I can tell it has nothing in common mechanically with earlier Visioneers.] It makes one-sided or two-sided scans, in color, greyscale, or black and white. It is fast and accurate. The document feeder handles everything I throw at it (with very occasional paper jams). Also, the more recent versions of Paperport scanning software (9.0 and above) that are bundled with the Documate produce pdf files as the default scans. Pdfs transfer well between Mac and Windows. [Some file names do not transfer fully from Mac to Windows, but all file names transfer from Windows to Mac in my experience. Therefore it is better to do initial scanning in the Windows environment. That is necessary in any event with the Xerox Documate, which functions only on Windows operating systems. The Documate does work well, to my own knowledge, on an Intel-based Mac running Windows XP in Boot Camp. I don't know, however, whether that also obtains for Windows Vista in a similar configuration.]
I got more useful scanning done in 4 weeks after I bought this device than I had accomplished in the previous 6 years.
UPDATE: I've now used the Xerox Documate for over 3 years. It has lived up to its promise, and then some. I bought a second one for a different office; it has worked equally well. I have also bought a Fujitsu Scansnap S500. The Scansnap is a capable scanner, at half the price, but not in the same league with the Xerox Documate 252.
There is one further development worth noting. The latest version of the Paperport scanning software (version 11.0, which I am now running on a Vista platform) handles paper jams more deftly. When the document feeder jams, the scanner now provides the option to save the pages already scanned to the Paperport Desktop and continue with the unscanned pages after unclogging the jam. This is a vast improvement over earlier versions, where a jam on the next-to-last page required a complete do-over. [I did not notice, unfortunately, exactly when this improvement kicked in, so I can't say specifically what level of upgrade is necessary to obtain it.]
SECOND UPDATE September 26, 2009: I am updating this review to report that after 4 and 1/2 years the older of my two Xerox Documate 252s has faltered mechanically. The problem is that the roller in the document feeder does not reliably grip the pages of the documents that I insert for scanning. As a result the scanner sometimes just whirs for a time, then stops. The document must be reloaded at that point and the scanning restarted. It helps to press the documents down and against the feeder, but that defeats the self-executing element of the scanner. My conjecture is that the roller (which is made of rubber) has become harder and has shrunk a little, so that it no longer grips paper with as much friction as in its younger days -- a kind of mechanical equivalent of bone loss. In any event, my original Documate 252 is now in semi-retirement. I still use it for short documents that I can help along by hand through the feeder, but not for long sustained scanning jobs. I have replaced the Documate with a Fujitsu fi-6130, which I unpacked and set up today. When I've had more extended experience with the fi-6130, I'll review it on Amazon.com. Meanwhile, I did try a few quick scans earlier today and was tremendously impressed with the mechanical performance of the fi-6130 (although the software is distinctly unwelcoming and will take time to absorb).

SVP FS1700 Black Digital Film Scanner w/ 2.4" Build-in LCD ~"World's Smallest Film Scanner"~ Review

SVP FS1700 Black Digital Film Scanner w/ 2.4 Build-in LCD ~World's Smallest Film Scanner~
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been waiting years for an affordable way to scan my parents 2000+ slides. The slides have been sitting in a big box in my house for years. The projector bulb on the 1960s era slide projector is burned out so we haven't seen the slides in 10+ years. I doubted the quality of such an inexpensive scanner, but once I tried it, it gave good results. One caveat, I have some slides that are in aluminum frames (my dad used to develop his own slides) and they wouldn't work in the scanner, since the frame for scanning is designed for paper slides. But I was able to remove the slides and scan them in the film frame.
The scanning was really easy. Press a button to preview and another button to scan. It takes an SD memory card (or connects to a computer), so I stuck in an SD card, and scanned while I watched TV. Scanning each slide literally took less than 2 seconds.
Tips:
There were several trays of slides that didn't get saved to the SD card, it may have been that the memory card was not inserted properly. So I had to rescan those. I would scan 5 or 6 trays, then copy them to my computer. That way if a batch was bad, I only had to rescan those 5 or 6 trays. But I scanned 2000 slides and this only happened once, so I think it was just user error.
Since I was scanning thousands of slides, separated into trays of 30 slides (some had less than 30) I found a couple of blank slides and would write the tray number on it with a black Sharpie and scan that as a divider, so I could easily sort the scanned slides into folders.
Once you delete the old scans from the SD card, the new scans will start being named/numbered from the beginning again (Scan001, Scan002, etc.) so you have to be careful when copying them to your computer so you don't overwrite the old scans. So once I copied the slides to my computer, I would divide them into folders and rename them. (You can do this in batches easily in Windows, or on a Mac with an AppleScript: Replace Text in Item Names).

Epson WorkForce 325 Color Inkjet All-in-One (C11CB08201) Review

Epson WorkForce 325 Color Inkjet All-in-One (C11CB08201)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This printer is a replacement for a similarly-priced older HP PSC1200, which had all of the same features except for faxing and WiFi. And I can say that this printer is superior in almost every way! The next time you are considering a print cartridge change on your old all-in-one, strongly consider upgrading to this Epson printer.
PROS:
The Mac OSX support is good. The driver CD was easy to install, unlike the HP experience, which has consisted of either the safe but featureless built-in driver or the featureful but computer-destroying install CD. None of those "extra programs" were installed by default by the Epson CD.
The driver supports setting the color management mode to black and white only, and retains it when you save it as a new Printer Preset. If you've had an HP before, you'll know that this is fantastic -- I had to remove the color cartridge from my old HP because it would randomly start deciding to print my black and white PDFs using the color cartridge.
The speed is very good for a low-cost inkjet printer, particularly just black and white research-type PDFs (the majority of what I print).
Paper feeder doesn't occasionally grab two sheets at a time.
CONS:
Printing is a little bit louder than my old HP. It's no dot-matrix printer, but the paper feeder is quite noisy.
Setting up the printer to work over WiFi doesn't work from OSX, so you have to put in your SSID/WEP key at the console. Better hope it's not complicated!

Plustek OpticFilm 7400 Film Scanner Review

Plustek OpticFilm 7400 Film Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The unit includes 35mm slide and negative carriers, the power adaptor, USB cable and a case. There's no film strip carrier.
Got it to primarily scan slides, so these comments apply to scanning slides only, and the results so far are very disappointing (using the SilverFast software). There's a decrease in sharpness; images have a slightly out of focus look, with none of the focus "crispness" of the original slide. Colors have a dull and lifeless look, and no amount of adjustment brings them to where they match the original slide. The auto-adjust (in SilverFast and the rest of the bundled software) totally distorts the colors. Reds have the typical overblown digital look, and getting a nice white seems impossible.
The slide and negative carriers have a slight amount of play when they're inserted in the machine; if they're not correctly oriented, the scanned image is slightly askew so a preview scan is a necessity. The scanner is very slow, especially in the multi-scan and multi-exposure modes, and the higher resolution settings. I thought lower resolution scans (below 3200dpi) were marginally acceptable, so dropping the resolution below 3200 to speed up the process wasn't an acceptable option for me. For a simple, "Straight" scan of a slide, the results seem better to me using "quick scan" which doesn't use the SilverFast software.
It occasionally "crashes" giving a message saying the scanner is not ready (apparently this has been an ongoing issue for Plustek OpticFilm scanners for a while now, judging from what I found when researching for a solution); the only thing that fixed the problem was to restart the computer. Regarding the construction: I wonder about the quality of the plastics used; was dusting off the slide carrier with a large soft makeup brush, and found that a small piece of plastic broke off the carrier.
From everything I've read about the SilverFast software, I expected better. The user interface is too busy, with 5 separate windows opening when the program is launched; the programmers sure didn't take into account the end user. Some settings just don't want to work; example, it refuses to take a different output setting for the image size (again, when scanning a alide). There's no confirmation some of the other tools/features are either accepted or being made after clicking on the appropriate button (such as multi-scan, multi-mode, the iSRD dust removal). The other bundled software included is Presto PageManager and Presto ImageFolio. (Today, 11/5/10, I searched Amazon for Silverfast software to see what I might find; sometimes reviewers post some good, helpful info. Found SilverFast SE with 4 reviews and a unanimous 1-star rating....so much for that idea).
Software and drivers installed easily with no problems (on a Windows Vista computer) and the desktop footprint is much smaller than a flatbed scanner; those are the best things I can say about it. This is my first dedicated film scanner; until now I've used flatbed scanners. I once did freelance commercial and advertising photography, did all my own darkroom work, and been an avid photographer since I was in high school, so I have a definite idea of the kinds of results I want, and the 7400 doesn't give me what I hoped for. Maybe once I master the SilverFast software I'll think differently, but in my opinion it shouldn't take that much work to make a straight, accurate scan of an original (slide) that was fine to begin with. Last of all, I think it's overpriced even at the $240 I paid for it (new).
Update 12/3/10: Color calibrated my HP w1907 monitor with a Spyder 3 Express Datacolor DC S3X100 Spyder 3 Express. Slide scan colors still aren't as close as I would like to the originals but are a bit better.

About 2/3 of the reviews I saw on amazon were very complimentary, but I was reluctant to purchase the hp 7210 after seeing some negative reviews about installation, software, etc. Luckily, I saw a pc world review which rated this product as the finest in this price range. They were right (at least for someone with a two year old DELL Dimension with Windows XP and all of the recent OS updates).
Amazing copy quality, great color copying and scanning, installation took about an hour and was easy (I don't fax much, so I don't feel qualified to comment on this part).
I highly recommend this all-in-one product for home and small office use.

Plustek Opticbook 3600 A4 Book Edge Scanner Pdf Conversion

I was a big fan of this scanner until recently.
It scans books fast without damaging spines.
I used it very carefully.
I used another scanner of mine for non-book materials, because I didn't want to waste the lamp life.
The result? The lamp died after around 200 scans!
I used it intermittently, so I was out of warranty when the lamp died.
I've used scanners of several manufacturers, and this is the first time that a scanner lamp died on me.
In sum, $300 for 200 scans is not recommendable at all.
Added: I got another reason to hate this scanner. Service of the company is horrible. I sent several emails about my problem, but never got answers.

SVP FS1200-Black Digital Film 35mm Negatives & Slides Scanner Review

SVP FS1200-Black Digital Film 35mm Negatives and Slides Scanner
Average Reviews:

This product did allow me to scan the family slides, but it did not live up to its description. First of all, the software did not work with Vista, even though it was supposed to work with up through Windows 7. It loaded OK, but then "could not find the scanner." There was no way to get manufacturer help: no links, no printed web address, and not even a telephone number. Finally I loaded the software into an older computer running on Windows XP. It worked, but it was touchy. Sometimes the screen would flicker or freeze entirely. It seemed to be helped by adjusting the display settings on my computer.
After scanning about four carousels of slides (several hundred), the rear flap of the scanner snapped leaving a dangling part inside the unit. I then had to watch very carefully to avoid catching the slide tray so that the tray would not become lodged partway in. At some point the flap came completely off.
Fortunately I had access to an XP computer, and the broken flap did not prevent me from finishing my project. I was not able to manipulate the photos as I had hoped, but at least my family memories are now digitized. If you have a computer running XP and your project is relatively small, the SVP-1200 might work out OK. Otherwise, you should probably consider something more user friendly and more durable.

This kit had exactly what I needed to make a well loved Fujitsu scanner stop misfeeding. The scanner is back to being the workhorse it was designed to be. If your high-end Fujitsu scanner is having trouble pulling just one sheet at a time, or perhaps it isn't pulling a page at all, there is a good chance it just needs some maintenance and this kit is the answer.
The instructions were easy enough for a tech minded person to follow and the results were great.
