My wife has a small business and I help her produce marketing material. There is always a need for printed material such as business cards, flyers, small signs, menus, coupons, etc. We had been using an ink-jet printer for years for any color material, but it was painfully slow. However, I had no idea how slow until we plugged in this beast. It is FAST.
We've had this now for a just a couple of weeks, but here is the feedback so far:
PROS:
- as mentioned the speed is tremendous, especially when doing small print jobs of 50-100 pages; I wish I had this years ago
- print quality has been very good; we print mainly color text and graphics with a few small photos
- for copier/scanner functions, you can use the feeder for multiple pages or the flatbed for single sheet/books/etc
- connectivity to the printer is great; I have a home computer that is connected via ethernet, but I also need a USB connection to the machine from my "work" laptop; this is important to me because my work laptop uses a VPN client that will not allow me to connect to my home network; so this allows me to use this printer simultaneously for both home and work computers (BTW: I needed a 15 ft USB cable for this, which I got pretty cheap on amazon)
- the fax machine has a "smart" setting, where it can be connected to the home phone line BUT it will not kick in unless it hears a fax tone from the other end; I'm sure this capability has been around forever but my old Brother Laser MFC (had for about 10 years and loved it) did not have this; this means I no longer need a dedicated fax line which is very nice (less money to VZ)
- nice control panel; well laid out; good little color LCD screen
- easy to set up and get going; no real issues so far with the PC-based software
CONS:
- This machine is a beast; it's very large and I'm still looking for a good place for it to settle in
- it does not do automated 2 sided printing; I can live without it but it would have been nice
- the quality of color copies was a little off; I'd rate this about a 6 out of 10
- cost; yes this thing cost more than we wanted to spend BUT at the same time, now that we have it, we which we would have had this years ago; it will probable pay for itself in time saved waiting for our print jobs
Overall, this is a great machine for the small business owner. It is fast and flexible; and since it's an HP, I'm expecting that it will prove reliable over time.
