Opteka HD² Slide Copier for Canon Powershot G10 & G11 Digital Camera Review

Opteka HD² Slide Copier for Canon Powershot G10 and G11 Digital Camera
Average Reviews:

Bought this item to digitize both 35mm AND 110 slides. It will work easily for the 35, but I'll have to remount (or MacGyver) the 110's...regardless, I can do it all without the pricey scanner.
Note: this item includes the step ring (METAL) and the converter tube (ALSO METAL)as well as the shown slide copier. So twist the pieces together and it goes right on the G11...I was concerned that I'd have to go buy some step rings, convertor tubes (which are usually crappy plastic), but in fact they were included. Genius.
item also includes a little adaptor so you can fit 35mm film strips in as well...a nice bonus.

Acer AcerScan ScanWit 2720S Film Scanner Review

Acer AcerScan ScanWit 2720S Film Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Contrary to the first reviewer, a passive terminator is not needed if this is the only SCSI device in the computer and you are using the bundled SCSI card. All I needed to do was plug in the SCSI card, hook up and scanner, install the driver, and boom, it's working! You do, however, need a terminator if you're hooking up the scanner to a third party SCSI card (ex. Adaptec). The scanner produces excellent scans for negatives, and very good results with slide films. Bundled software, Mirafoto, has ver nice features and is easy to use. However, for certain negative films it does not produce the most accurate colors, but that can easily be corrected in any imaging software (Photoshop 5 LE is included). For this price, this scanner is an excellent buy!

Minolta Dimage Scan Elite Scanner with Digital ICE Review

Minolta Dimage Scan Elite Scanner with Digital ICE
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did quite a bit of research before deciding on this scanner, so I'll sum up for you what took me many hours. I also considered a couple of the lower end Minolta Dimage scanners, as well as the Nikon Coolscan and the HP Photosmart S20.
Essentially, they all promise to scan 35mm film, and with an adapter, it can also do APS. However, promises are just that - empty for most of these scanners. This one however does it all:
- Digital ICE (you absolutely need this for cleaning images after they are scanned in - do NOT get a scanner without this, you'll be sorry!). - 2,820 dpi resolution (you always want to scan as high as possible. You can always sample down and lower resolution, but you can't go the other way without quality degradation) - Fast scanning speeds (with the exception of $2,000 models, this is the fastest scanner around. On my Windows PC is takes around 30 secs. On a Mac is takes 10 or so per FINAL scan.)
The problem with the Photosmart 20 is that it doesnt have a proper ICE image cleaner and film scans poorly. The Nikon coolscan doesnt have a good dut guard, and you end up with dust on your negatives/slides, which scans in horribly! UGH!
This one has virtually no weakness. SCSI connection makes it extremely fast! Get it and you'll be happy you did.

The Minolta Dimage Scan Elite Scanner is designed for professionals who want to produce top-quality images. Using Digital ICE (Image Correction Enhancement) technology, this scanner identifies surface defects like scratches, dust and fingerprints, and automatically removes them from the scan, reducing the need for retouching and producing cleaner images.
With a high input resolution of 2,820 dpi, the Dimage Scan Elite supplies 10 million pixels in a full-frame image scanned from 35mm film. The 12-bit RGB analog-to-digital conversion and 3.6 dynamic range deliver strong color while adjusting for deep shadows and bright highlights. Scanned images possess the fine quality of your original, with tonal gradations of up to 4,096 shades for each color channel (that's a total of 68.7 billion colors for RGB channels). The Dimage Scan Elite's driver software sustains from conventional 8-bit to 16-bit output. Thus you'll maintain accurate color fidelity in the final printing from prescanned images with gamma correction.
Top-quality output and versatility are paramount in the design of the Dimage Scan Elite. It's capable of scanning 35mm sleeved and mounted, positive and negative films in color and black and white. Plus, with an optional adapter, the Elite is also compatible with Advanced Photo System (APS) film. A click of the mouse yields index scans and continuous scanning of the entire APS film cassette. Running at scanning speeds you would expect from a more advanced unit, the Dimage Scan Elite scans 35mm color positives in an average of 30 seconds for Macintosh and 35 seconds for PCs. Combine this scanning rate with a high-speed SCSI-II interface, and your staff will scan more productively, saving time and effort.

Umax Astra 3450 Scanner Review

Umax Astra 3450 Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are looking for great quality transparency scans using this sleek flatbed, you will be hugely disappointed. All the scans that I did for my slides were lacking in contrast, and lost significant amount of colour depth. More over, because of the lack of high optical resolution (I scanned at 1200 - the max optical resolution offerred by this scanner) the images even look slightly unfocussed !
The preview and scan times are also too long. An average preview takes 3 minutes per slide (forget the 7 secs preview promised on the brochure - I never realised seven second even while scanning a colour photo at 300 res), and an average scan between 6-9 minutes.
Scanned colour photo images came out slightly better - but the cost - equivalent images can also be had out of scanners about half the cost of this one !
The scanner is well packaged with all the software I needed, the hardware did not give me any trouble while installing, the scanning software (vistascan) works well without crashing my PC.
My reco - look for a better product. And if you really want good transparency scans - I guess it is better to go in for a dedicated transparency scanner

Tamarack Technologies 2400 FS Film Scanner Review

Tamarack Technologies 2400 FS Film Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought mine from Amazon for about three weeks ago for justunder $200. Considering that ProLab here in Seattle charges $3 perpicture scanned, it seemed like a good deal in the long run.
Myexperience with it so far: the scanner does a great job with photostaken in bright, even sunlight but has a tougher time withhigh-contrast pics -- especially those with big patches of black. Trueblack on a color slide often comes out filled with rainbow splotcheson the scan. (I haven't scanned any color negatives yet.)
On theupside, the scanner comes with Adobe PhotoDeluxe, which is a choppedversion of Photoshop. It's pretty good for fixing defects like theabove. A guy I talked to at Prolab said even the high-end scanner theyuse doesn't render slides/negs perfectly, and that you still need somesort of photo software. So the Tamarack's shortcomings may be commonto all analog-to-digital transfers. PROS:
* Scanner pays for itselfonce you get beyond 60 photos
* Small footprint; about the size of abrick
* Good choice for pics that will end up on the Web
* UsefulAdobe software
CONS:
* Doesn't handle true blacks well
*Documentation is atrocious, very badly translated from Chinese END

The ArtiScan 2400FS color film scanner is a compact, easy-to-use film and slide scanning solution. With 36-bit color depth and 2,400 x 4,800 dpi optical resolution, the scanner provides high-quality images and simple operation, making it perfect for business professionals. Plus, it's compact, measuring only 8 by 4.4 by 4.6 inches.
The 2400FS features parallel input and pass-through connections; however, it also comes with a USB adapter cable to make the unit operate as a USB device. Installation involves inserting the DocuMan CD-ROM, connecting the cable to the PC and scanner, and stepping through the Add New Hardware wizard. This process places a scanner icon on to your desktop, which you can use to start the driver software. It's important to note the USB interface will not work with Windows NT 4.0. The 2400FS is also TWAIN compliant, so it's an ideal companion for your TWAIN-compatible applications.
Cartridges are included to hold six-frame 35mm negative strips or four slides. These cartridges slide directly into the front of the scanner where a motor feeds them through to the rear. Simple LEDs for power, ready status, and busy status provide basic status information about scanner operation.
Tamarack Technologies' DocuMan 2.07 serves as the anchor of the software bundle. It provides a desktop-style interface--similar to Visioneer's PaperPort--that organizes scanned images and includes functions to scan directly to a printer, fax, or e-mail. Also included is the company's DocuPal 1.0 software for image handling and constructing complex, professional looking documents. Adobe PhotoDeluxe is also included for user-friendly image editing.

I just ordered this scanner a few days ago and it arrived very quickly, it was so simple to install a 5 year old could do it, just put in the software, push install, and plug 1 cord into the back of your comp and the other into a wall socket and you are ready to go. The software that came with it is great, and it scans under 10 seconds on 200 dpi, It has the most beautiful quality scans i have ever seen in both grayscale, and color. It's just amazing! I love the preview feature! it has a real-time preview feature where you can change, contrast, lighting, etc and see it happen while you are doing it, so you know exactly what it looks like when you scan it. I encourage everyone who needs a scanner or just wants one to get this one! it's the best!

SVP Digital Film and Slide Scanner w/ 2.4 LCD + AV Out, Free 8GB (SVP FS1800B-8GB)
Average Reviews:

This is about what you would expect for a $100. slide and negative scanner. It takes strips of negatives a group of 5 slides. The resulting scanned images are sharp enough for 5"X7" prints but the contrast(increases contrast) and color depth(decreased number of colors results in more posterish pictures)suffers. Unfortunately, to get better results you have to go to a scanner the costs 3 to 5 times as much.(the epson v700 is a good example). The good news is that it is easy to setup and scan. It saves directly to an SD card (one was included) so you don't have to use the computer. I like to scan watching TV to avoid the boredom. All in all, I got what I paid for.

Lomography DigitaLIZA 35mm Scanning Mask Kit Review

Lomography DigitaLIZA 35mm Scanning Mask Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this after I scanned a few negatives, shot with the 360 spinner, without a mask. I've not used it a lot yet but I have mixed feelings about it
Pros:
* flattens the negative which tend to be curved because of the unusually long image size
* improves the speed with which you can align and scan
* Robust
Cons:
* It's overpriced for what it does
* Negatives might get damaged if they get misaligned and pop out of the strip
* Getting the negative to stay in and to get the magnetic plates in place is still a cumbersome task
Well i'll still be looking around for a scanning mask with a better design.
PS: I'm using epson v500 to scan all this

Microtek ScanMaker 8700 USB Scanner Review

Microtek ScanMaker 8700 USB Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to add this to my previous review, in all fairness to reviewing. I had to return my 8700 to Microtek. After a phone call to tech support, he determined that my unit may have had a hardware problem due to the inconsistent manner my scanner would or would not work. It would or would not scan the image-it might do a partial scan then black out the rest-or it might scan correctly-I just never knew what it would do.
When you would click the arrow in the toolbar to shut it down, it would not respond.
I did not get an owner's manual with my first scanner. So I sent it off; the replacement was a different story. It worked! It has not given me any "partial" scans; it has shut down properly everytime, and it had the owner's manual.
After e-mailing tech support to find out about the dynamic range, (indicates how a scanner might produce shadow detail) I found out it was a 3.2. This is not so great; I had noticed on more than a few slides that the shadow detail was lacking.
For me, this scanner prints better from negatives, as the film I use has very good latitude. 2400x1200 dpi optical for 35mm is okay but if you are serious about your work, wanting enlargements, your negatives or slides better be super sharp, with good contrast-otherwise I would look for a higher dpi output, or try a larger negative format.
To wrap this up, I wish this scanner had a better dpi output and a higher dynamic range-I would say the two most important characteristics, besides very sharp scans. Otherwise, the scanner is easy to use; the other features make it enjoyable to use. I would give it 3 stars, but the ability to print from larger negatives-4x5, 6x6-6x9 film negatives or unmounted slides, or 8x10 transparency holder w/glass hopefully will help out the quality of my enlargements-will have to wait and see.

iConvert Photo Scanner Review

I was given both the Iconvert photo scanner and negative/slide scanner for Christmas a couple of years ago. I first tried to load the software on a 64 bit Vista computer and it would not work. It took me forever to figure out why it would not work, I assumed I was not doing something correctly, however once I figured out that was the problem, I decided that I would use it with my 32 bit computer, however that computer has Windows 7 loaded and again it does not work.
I was able to scan 2 pictures from the photo scanner before I became so frustrated that I gave up and the light source in the scanner washed out the entire picture so it too was of no use.
I have called Brookstone and of course because I took too long in trying different computers etc there is no way I can get a replacement and there are no upgrades available.
If I could give this no stars I would.

I have tried repeatedly to get the 2000u to work to no avail. More calls to Customer Support than I can afford. After asking for a manager I was told my problems were common, if I wanted them to check out the scanner (since phone support could not figure it out) I had to send back the scanner at my expense and they would determine whether or not to repair, refurbish or replace the scanner. The final gotcha was that I had tried for over three months to solve the problems by phone and was now out of warranty and they refused to even look at it if I did send it back. Buy ANYthing else.

Powerslide 3650 Review

Powerslide 3650
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our family has slides. My parents have over 6,000 slides, I have reels and reels of slides that my grandfather took, my brother has a few thousand, and I have probably a few thousand myself. This device is a lifesaver! Yes, it sometimes jams. Yes, the software has it's problems. Yes, it's slower than slow. However, in the end it does a good job and best of all it does the scanning mostly without any help. We got this in Fall 2007 and my parents have finished their 6,000, and I'm working through mine and my grandfather's.
This scanner comes with a straight tray that holds 50 slides. We wanted the ability to pack one tray while the other is running so we bought two circular ones from the manufacturer that each hold 100 slides. We highly recommend doing this -- the circular ones jam much less than the included straight one. The scanner does about 9 or 10 slides per hour.
We're using this scanner on Mac OS X using Firewire -- haven't tried it with a PC or using the USB connection. We've used it on both Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) and 10.5 (Leopard) -- make sure that you download the Leopard update from the manufacturer's website if you're on Leopard. The software itself is quirky, and it has a very unintuitive interface that I suppose shows it's Windows origins.
The typical process for setting it up
--------------------------------------------
1. Close all unnecessary apps (My mom needs to do this on her system with 1GB of RAM. I have 3GB and don't have to do this.)
2. Turn on scanner (takes a minute or two)
3. Start CyberView X software
4. Load tray into scanner. Use arrows on scanner to line up with notch on circular reel showing #1 slide.
5. From Scan menu, select Scan, then select Multi-Scan to File
6. Enter the number of slides in this batch.
7. Select where you want to write the scan files.
8. Select file type (TIF or JPG), and if JPG, also select output quality (Good, Better, Best).
9. Click Ok
There's two types of jams: 1) the slide didn't make it into the scanner, so the scan is of nothing! 2) more serious jams when it can't move the slide. In this case, it just shuts down. We have yet to have a slide damaged by this machine.
When we finish a batch, we check for any duds -- scans that turned out like white frames because of a jam -- then we rescan just those duds. The scanner has the capability to let you feed individual slides in manually, and we have to do that on rare occasions.
Tips to reduce jamming
--------------------------
1) Put 'em in straight. Take care to put the slides straight into the slot in the tray.
2) Unbend. Make sure the slides aren't warped or tweaked. If they are try making them straight again. We had some 40-50 year old cardboard mounts that had been in Honeywell trays for about that long that were bent.
3) Trim the mounts. We had some old cardboard mounts that weren't mounted correctly -- the two halves didn't quite match. This made the mount a bit larger than it should be so we used scissors to carefully trim the extra edges. This made the slides fit better into the tray without bending or going in crooked.
As for the image -- we've seen some banding, and the colors don't seem as rich as the original slides, but that can be fixed with post processing. See the examples I uploaded.
Summary
------------
This scanner takes some getting used to as it whirrs, grinds, and make other noises, and you'll probably need to rescan some that got jammed, but over all it's a great time saver!
