Samsung CLX3175FN Color Laser Printer Review

Samsung CLX3175FN Color Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned this Samsung MFP now for about a month--replacing the last HP inkjet I will ever own. I don't print a ton of stuff, maybe 10 pages a day on average--so speed is not an issue--this one isn't fast but is more than adequate for a small office.
Here's a fast summary of my experience so far:
* The print quality is outstanding, the scanner works great
* The drivers installed flawlessly the first time (even on Vista-- believe it or not)
* The networking installed the first time-and worked after a 2-3 minute installation--all I had to do was supply an IP address-period, nothing else.
* unlike other printers I've had, the network connection on this Samsung has worked continously since the first install-I've not had to restarteven once.
* Why not 5 stars? It literally dims my lights--they flicker when it is running--may be too much computer equipment on the same circuit--I do have a lot of equipment in my office-so this may not be a problem you'll encounter
So far this is easily the best printer/scanner/copier/fax I have owned--and the replacement toner is only about $45 each (I priced them BEFORE buying)-- and if you shop around-you might find this machine on sale--making it almost a no brainer. The bottomline is that it works, it installed easily, and the quality is excellent.
Update 08/2010:
I now have owned this for over 18 months--and I still would give it 4-5 stars-the only reason for not 5 is still because it causes my room lights to flicker when it is operating (not when it is in idle mode). Since my first review-I have had zero issues with the operation of this printer--and am very happy with the speed and quality of the scans, faxes, prints, etc.
Ironically, I found the little brother to this printer (CLP-310) on sale for cheaper than buying replacement toners so I bought it just for the toner and 'spare parts'--it is a wireless model-and now I use it as my primary-it doesn't dim the lights...but it is the same print engine as far as I can tell-so the quality is just as good. If you don't need scanning and faxing, the CLP-310 is a better choice for just printing-since it is wireless.
And the network set-up on it was just as easy and flawless...
Hope this helps.

Ricoh Aficio SP C232SF Color All-In-One Laser Printer (406443) Review

Average Reviews:

The print quality of this machine is quite good but that is where the benefits end. These are the problems that I have had in the two months that I have owned it:
1. Regular paper jams. There is no apparent paper jam but the machine stops and paper jam is the error message. I called tech support and they told me to fan the paper more. Fanning the paper is not the issue it jams no matter how or how many times you fan the paper.
2. Missed faxes. Sometimes the fax does not pick up. This hasn't happened to me in many years, since the fax was perfected 15-20 years ago. But this machine will sometimes not pick up the fax or pick up only part of the fax. C'mon, this is a fax machine! You can buy them for under $100 and they work better, a lot better, than this!
3. Does not send the fax. I have had repeated problems with this machine not sending any or only part of a fax. This has happened many times and is frightening since I am sending contracts and similar important biz documents. Once again: this is a fax machine! The technology was perfected a long time ago but apparently not by Ricoh.
4. Fax: Not very easy to adjust ring times or volume. My assistants each read the manual and were not able to do it. We had to bring in the tech guy and even then he was only able to turn the volume off completely, not what I wanted and the minimum number of rings is three.
5. Warm up time: I takes 1 minute and 25 seconds to print a monochrome copy first thing in the morning. It takes nearly a minute to print once the machine goes into the saver mode. Nothing like seeing the staff wait and wait for prints to kick out! That will get your BP up.
6. Scanning: I don't know yet I haven't been able to figure out how to scan to the computer yet but I have only spent a normal amount of time trying so far and have been using a canon Dr-2050C scanner since it is simple and easy to use.
I paid $850 and this machine has slowed down business, beware. I will be happy to remove this review if Ricoh buys the machine back from me.
Overall a bad choice. What a waste of time. I am going to hook up the old Brother fax and buy a new printer/copier and try to sell this machine.
Update: December 2009. I'd like to report that after three visits from a repair crew that this machine is better than one star but it's not. If I hadn't paid so much for it plus a very expensive extended warranty I would have given it away but I can't in good conscience sell this lemon.

Samsung CLP-510 Color Laser Printer Review

Samsung CLP-510 Color Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

Despite the high resolution numbers claimed this machine is a bit fuzzier for B&W printing than my 7-year-old HP laserprinter. On the plus side, the printer was easy to set up for Windows XP printing through a network-attached storage disk array. The pages are smear-proof unlike those from an inkjet printer. I don't think that there is any other printer at this price that will duplex (print on both sides).
Make sure that you have a friend named Bruno when it is time to hoist this puppy into the car or onto a desk.

A feature-rich laser printer, the CLP-510 from Samsung is one of the most cost-efficient printers on the market, with a cost per page of as low as 1.1 cents. Built to withstand even heavy workloads, the CLP-510 has a 35,000-page monthly duty cycle and is compatible with PC, Mac, and Linux operating systems. With print resolutions up to 1200 dpi, you can create professional looking documents from your home or office. Print speeds are as fast as 25 ppm for monochrome, with a time-to-first-page of about 13 seconds.
The CLP-510 comes with a standard USB port and optionally supports Ethernet and wireless networks, providing expandability even for connected workgroups. With 64 MB of standard memory (expandable up to 194 MB) and Samsung's SPGPm processor, the CLP-510 can reliably handle large print jobs. An automatic duplexing unit lets you easily print double-sided documents. The 250-sheet standard paper tray is expandable up to 400 pages, and a second 100-sheet multi-purpose tray supports paper sizes up to 8.5 by 14 inches. The CLP-510 consumes less than 450 watts during normal printing and less than 17 watts in sleep mode. Samsung also provides a one-year limited warranty.

right out of the box this printer made great prints for pennies on the dollar, we picked this up because we're using a large format inkjet for proofs and it was eating us alive on print costs, for the price of the one set of large-format Epson ink cartridges we got this printer with toner included and have been very happy with the results, with almost no setup is very color accurate for a four color process printer, with almost no installation it went right onto the PCs and Macs and we haven't had a single problem with it. the prints are cheap enough that we can just give them away as proofs and not be concerned with the cost, and the media it prints on his very cost efficient in the printer itself is very reliable.

Ricoh Aficio CL3500N Color Laser Printer (White) Review

Ricoh Aficio CL3500N Color Laser Printer (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We installed fourteen of these under our purview (college dorms) 10 months ago and our residents printed ~800,000 copies since.
Pros:
* They simply do not jam. I've run a printing operation serving 2500 residents for eight years and have never had a workgroup laserprinter be so reliable.
* They work well in an 'open' printing environment. We us PostScript and accept about 25% of our jobs from Macs, 70% from PCs - mostly XPSP2, and 5% Linux. There are no noticeable OS issues. We've seen that certain versions of Acrobat on Windows or Mac may fail to print, particularly with large file sizes (>300MB ps) or with full-page mathematical notations, but Adobe upgrades fix that on Windows and Preview fixes that on Mac.
* Changing toner is a no-brainer.
* The print quality is excellent for both text and color images. I'm uncertain why Andre's experience was so poor, but believe it was an anomaly.
Cons:
* It's slow. Expect to wait the 20 seconds or so for first page out unless you've just printed another job. And, when it starts printing, it's no speed demon. If you are setting up only one or so, the sleep time is configurable, but with 14 of these deployed and managed by student staff, we merely put printers in place, out-of-box. Stick with Xerox workgroup printers for speedy KW printing.
* It's heavy. Two person heavy. Really.
* It's bigger than your average printer.

Workgroup-Level Printing at a Desktop Price The CL3500N embodies the latest device management and print controller technologies to bring you 22 pages per minute (ppm) full-color and monochrome network printing options with image quality and a price that make it a leader in overall value and performance. This network-ready full-color/monochrome laser printer is designed to meet the needs of budget-conscious small offices and workgroups seeking fast, affordable color. Similarly priced color laser printers are often significantly slower than the CL3500N, while printers with comparable speeds and capabilities are typically larger and more expensive. The CL3500N is thus the perfect choice to meet all your needs for performance and value. Print Speeds and Resolution The CL3500N works quickly and efficiently, minimizing wait time. The machine takes only 30 seconds or less to warm up, and thanks to print speeds of 22 ppm for both black-and-white and color printing and a first page out speed of 13.5 seconds for black-and-white and 14.5 for color, you'll have plenty of time to focus on other tasks. In addition, the 1200 by 1200 dots per inch (dpi) resolution ensures that each and every document will come out crisp, sharp, and vivid. And the 128 MB of memory (512 maximum memory available) means the CL3500N handles even the most complex jobs with ease. Compact and Versatile The versatile CL3500N can be expanded to meet the demands of your business, while never occupying more space. You can simply add one or two 530-sheet paper trays to the standard 630-sheet supply and install them beneath the main unit. In this way, the printer can increase its capabilities without any alteration to the system footprint. You can also take advantage of the multipurpose tray to feed stocks up to 110 pounds, and save paper by producing two-sided pages automatically with the optional internal duplex unit. Seamless Simplicity The CL3500N comes equipped with a standard USB 2.0 and 10/100BaseTX Ethernet network interface, which allows you to seamlessly migrate from a direct connection from your PC to either your printer, or to multi-user network printing at no additional cost. To further maximize your investment, you can easily extend device access to new users with unique printing requirements. In older and historic buildings where installing hardwired network drops is difficult or cost prohibitive, and for temporary events like conferences and trade shows, you can take advantage of CL3500N support for a number of specialized connectivity options, such as IEEE 802.11b and Bluetooth Wireless protocols for cable-free printing. The printer also integrates seamlessly with computers running Windows, Macintosh, and UNIX operating systems. Integrate Options for Greater Value When you need even more functionality, the CL3500N is ready to grow with your business. Add the Ricoh IS200e Image Scanner to satisfy color copying needs and take advantage of electronic document distribution with Scan-to-Email, Scan-to-Folder, and more. Capture high-resolution color images for editing or placement into new digital documents, and then share that information instantly without distribution costs. The CL3500N comes with a one-year warranty.

Samsung CLP-300N Network-ready Color Laser Printer Review

Samsung CLP-300N Network-ready Color Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used this printer for about a month. In general, it prints text well, albeit a bit oversaturated. OTOH, the rated speed output for monochrome prints is actually close to accurate.
For color prints, my use has primarily been for color charts, graphs and the like, and for this purpose, it works admirably well (use decent quality laser paper for best results). It is fast, and for both monochrome and color printing, it is very quiet, with rapid startup (no long waiting before the first page is printed).
I would not use this printer for photos, but that's obvious. Inkjet and dye-sub printers do a far better job at printing photos, although the costs of consumables are much higher as well. Comparison with my Konica-Minolta 2450 (which is also network ready shows slight banding and generally less than optimal photo quality. However, for general office use, claimed comsumable cost is considerably lower than for even the most basic inkjets.
The software supplied with the CLP-300N (the N means it has an ethernet network card installed) works as advertised, and installing it on both Windows 2003 and XP is straighforward. The bundled software (30 day trial) is worth what you pay for it, which is to say, very little. However, as noted above, printing photos is not this printer's forte.
All in all, the small size, quiet operation, quick startup and good monochrome printing with the opetion to add a dash of color makes this a good workgroup printer for SOHO use. The reliability of the printer remains unknown, as I've only printed about 5000 pages sso far. Similarly, the quoted capacity of the toner bottles may be overoptimistic, but it's too early to tell.
Compared to the behemoths sold by HP and others, this printer does not overwhem a small sized office or open space, and I recommend it with only a few small reservations. As a value/money proposition, it's a good deal.

Brother MFC-9450CDN Color Laser Multifunction Center with Duplex Printing and Ethernet Interface Review

Brother MFC-9450CDN Color Laser Multifunction Center with Duplex Printing and Ethernet Interface
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I would give this printer 4.5 stars if I had the option. After one day of ownership my only complaints are that the front door for manual feed is flimsy and the compressed software expanded to a random location in the OS: Windows/System32/mflpro/Setup9450CDN/Eng/setup.exe I also wish that the paper output closer to the front; I feel like I am pulling the paper out before it's printed because it's so deep into the machine. The printer is only loud when printing and it's mostly a fan noise, the machine movement is quiet. The high-speed fan noise quickly lowers dB after the paper has finished printing.
I bought this printer because it has a small footprint and most importantly automatic duplex output from a color laser. The next model up offers duplex scanning, copying and faxing but I did not like how much larger the printer was. Ethernet setup was almost automatic after finding the setup file location shown above.
I was considering the HP Color LaserJet CM3530fs MFP, but for $3,000 MSRP the extra stapler and 50-sheet feeder was not much of a value. I also do not like how many multifunction laser printer are so high, I really like this compact design.
My previous printer experience was with Canon inkjet multi-function MP830 & MX850, both of which broke one month after their warranty. Dell 1815dn b&w multi-function laser which is garbage on so many levels. Xerox 6110MFP which had a transfer belt error and needs servicing, but most importantly only has manual duplex printing which is not ideal. This printer has made me the happiest of all so far. If anything goes crazy with this machine I'll report back.
1-year update:
===========================================================
I am still happy with this machine mostly because I discovered how to keep using the toner after the printer decides that it is finished.
- My current page count is 2,743 Color & 3,519 B&W. I just replaced my B&W today because the black toner was leaking into the machine resulting in hazy gray prints, but clear text without any streaking or misprinting. I would guess that my printer told me that the Black was finished about 3,000 pages ago! This machine refuses to print when there is plenty of toner remaining, which is completely unacceptable. You have to cover the clear plastic windows of the toner cartridge to fool the sensor. Another trick is to open the main door and press clear and then you can reset the life of the toner; but this fix is only good for a few pages and has inconsistent results. I've also read stories of people turning back toner cartridge wheels but I did not need to attempt because I blocked the clear windows.
The network scan loses its connection to my PC sometimes, but the ControlCenter3 scanning application still works even when the printer cannot find my pc on the network.
The ADF on top is slightly rotating my documents, I'm not sure how to fix. The documents appear to be feeding correctly.
I can't find a setting that makes accurate color copies. I've had to bump up the contrast which results in saturation, especially if you're copying and copy.
The noises are still similar to when new. I replaced the B&W toner today because I hear some squeaking that stopped when using the new cartridge.
All types of paper have been successful with this machine!
- My favorite is HP 113100
HP 11310-0 HP Premium Choice Laserjet Paper, White, 32-lb., 8-1/2" x 11", 500 Sheets/ream
I also added RAM to the machine because I received some memory errors that may have been related to faxes. The RAM upgrade was very easy; there is a door on the left-side of the machine that provides access to add the new module. The max capacity is 512MB.
Kingston KVR133X64SC3L/512 ValueRAM 512MB PC133 SODIMM Low Profile Module
Summary: The size and price are amazing for the features that you are receiving. Plan to modify your toner cartridges and you'll experience a nice machine.

Phaser 6180MFP Clr P/c/s/f 20/31PPM Network Auto Duplex Review

Average Reviews:

I have given the Phaser 6180MFP five stars in all available categories. Had there been a categories for "Ease of setup" and "Documentation" it would have gotten four and three stars respectively in those.
That said, the Phaser 6180MFP is a very reliable workhorse that does everything it is supposed to do and does it well.
Xerox customer service is pretty good; waiting time is minimal and the a.e. is resonably understandable.
My main printing is training manuals (hundreds of pages duplex color printing). I scan every document I get and keep truly paperless archives.
My faxing is minimal but I use a dual number single line with an automatic switch. It works as it should.
I do not use the email feature and make very few hard copies.

Bought this in Feb.2007. Features were great. Scan to network (and PDF build) were the main reason for buying this. Fax was excellent. Jams in the doc feeder were more common than should be for something over $2,000 in price.
After the 1-year warranty expired, a cheap rubber belt in the document feeder broke, which stopped the entire printer from functioning. That cost $400, because they won't sell the belt, and the authorized service tech will not do it. You have to buy an entire document feeder assembly, pay for the installation, then the installer takes the old one away.
Now, the printer crashed in the middle of copying. The firmware was trashed and cannot be re-loaded. Wasted 2 hours with HP tech support (which costs $25 for an online chat session). Went through the same procedures I already spent 1/2 hour doing. I kept having to correct the HP rep and repeating steps.
This board replacement will cost $629. But, at least I get my $25 "chat fee" returned. Whoopee. They won't even refer it to our local authorized HP shop that's a mile down the street. They're sending an independent tech. What great business.
If you are going to buy this printer, buy the extended service pack from HP. You will definitely need it.
Started the "chat" at 3:42pm. Ended at 6:11pm. Funny, at the beginning there was a pop-up request for a satisfaction survey. Now that the session has ended...there's no survey.
I'm usually a big HP fan. Their output is never the prettiest, but the machines keep working for years and years, even after heavy use and infrequent preventative maintenance.
Seems like their quality has gone seriously downhill. Just replaced two identical JetDirect cards that went south. Both are three years old...one was never even used. Just sat in the printer.
I hope HP can resurrect their image. Bad techs and broken equipment just won't cut it. Especially when you pay a premium for the brand name.

I own 3 of these in two businesses - and at my home. This is a very reliable printer with good, clean output. Always works, easy to print envelopes with and makes a reliable fax machine. It's also a very good scanner and copier, capable of double-sided copies. Scanning directly into my iMac, the results are very clean.
For you Mac users, this is an excellent choice. Easy to set up on a network or directly connected via USB. I use one in an all PC network, one in a mixed Mac and PC network at home and another in a mixed Mac and PC network in my Forensics Lab.
This is an excellent value, solidly constructed and easy to setup and use. I highly recommend this machine.

After reading the one-star review, I had to post this so that you could have a second opinion. I purchased this printer a year ago and it works like a champ. I have experienced zero problems with this machine and find it as easy to use as it was to setup. Perhaps there were issues when the 2009 review was posted, but this certainly has not been my experience.

Samsung CLP 300 Mini Personal Color Laser Printer Review

Samsung CLP 300 Mini Personal Color Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been looking pretty hard at the sales flyers over the last few months waiting for a chance to score a color laser printer at a price range that doesn't make me have to eat bag lunches for a month to catch up. A local office superstore had two models I was eying, an HP 1600 and this one. They seemed pretty similar in most regards until [...] dropped the CLP-300 100 dollars below the HP. It was time to grab the bargain.
This is the second Samsung laser printer I have in my home office now, the first one being the little ML-1740. I've had that one for better than a year now and it has been wonderful. So I wasn't afraid to try the Samsung CLP-300 because its name isn't as big as HP's. So I get it home and commence to setting it up. As with the earlier ML-1740, it took about 5 minutes to unpack, route cables, plug in the toner packs, and fire it up. It didn't skip a beat and had a test page done in a jiffy. Drivers for the computer went just as easily. Overall a very, very simple set up.
Back to the toner "packs" (or cartridges) for a bit... I don't think I've ever seen a more simple toner system. This system is literally easier to deal with than inkjet cartridge replacement. The front cover of the printer opens to reveal 4 "holes" for the toner cartridges. Simply remove the protective covers from the 3 color cartridges and 1 black cartridge and pop them into their respective holes. This has to be a step forward for the laser printer world.
Anyway, I've only had this for about a week but have put maybe 200 pages through it already. It works like a champ and I'm really happy I picked it up. I'll list below some of the pros and cons as I see them (in no particular order): Pros:
* Low noise when printing... very low noise actually. Its little more than a light whirring sound.
* Fast printing (about 20 to 25 seconds to the first high quality print and very fast once started).
* Great drivers giving you good printing options like double sided printing, booklet printing (on long or short side of page), watermarks, pre-generated letterhead, ability to print multiple pages per sheet, ability to print posters, etc... ...way too much to list here.
* Decent color photo prints. The quality isn't quite up to the photo quality of the better inkjet photo printers, but its good. And it certainly isn't poor enough to be a negative. I'd say though that if your primary goal is photo prints you might want to compare some other higher priced models before settling on this one. Otherwise, this should suit you fine.
*Size... it fits perfect on my printer stand. This doesn't over power the room by being overly bulky. Its not too much bigger than the ML-1740 and way smaller than its older sibling the CLP-510 (I liked the built in duplexing on the 510 but wasn't too crazy at all about its size).Cons:
* Power... it seems like it uses quite a bit more than the little ML-1740 (no surprise I'm sure) because my battery backup makes a click every few minutes like a brown out spike happens. The ML-1740 makes the lights flicker on occasion but had no effect on the UPS. On a related note however, this printer has a user adjustable power saver mode that puts it to sleep after a set number of minutes.
* Low paper capacity. Only about 150 sheets in the paper tray. But its easy to remove and fill and I doubt I'll ever print more than that in a sitting.
* No front auxiliary feed tray (like the ML-1740) for feeding various sized papers into the machine. The CLP-300 does take various sized papers but you have to use the paper tray.
* Power switch in the back. The ML-1740 had this set up too. How hard can it be to put the switch on the front or even the front side to make it more accessible. Better yet, let the unit be powered on and off automatically by software like some other printers can do. The switch all the way in the back, on the bottom, is not a deal breaker but its an aggravation that I wish Samsung would address in their future models.
* Toner amount... Here's something I'm not sure will be an issue or not in the long run but right now I'm a bit concerned. The toner packs are small. The color ones are a bit smaller than a styrofoam cup while the black one is about as large as a typical ceramic coffee mug but a bit taller perhaps. The technical papers say you'd get about 1000 sheets of color printing per color. I'll edit this review in a few months with my impression of how true that appears to be. The silver lining to this issue might be that the toner packs are cheaper than the typical toner cartridges for other laser printers. And also, according to the Samsung website, this printer is supposed to be cheaper to operate in the long than other printers. A cent or two here or there adds up I guess. So my score of 4 out of 5 stars represents the above pros and cons and my experience so far with this printer. Its not a perfect 5 because there is room for improvement but its a very nice printer that is great to have. And for the price, there is no reason why every home can't have color laser printing now. I can still remember when inkjets were replacing the dot matrix printers... move over inkjets, here we go again.*** Follow Up Edit: 24oct06 (original post 9oct06)***
I'm coming up on a month now of useage and haven't had a problem yet. I would like to add to my comment made above though regarding the quality of the photo prints ... I've done a bunch of pictures so far and I would again encourage people who are looking predominantly for a picture printer to look at a level a bit higher than this one. For what I do, this is fine, but folks looking for photo quality printing would likely find this a bit lacking.
Also, along with the photos and numerous web pages, I've printed several good sized PDF documents with a lot of illustrated graphics and the toner indicators in my printer monitor (the software) shows negligible toner use. I can't confirm this by sight or weight of the toner packs themselves but if the indicators are correct, I'm happy with the mileage I'm getting so far.

HP CM1015 Color Laserjet All in One Printer Review

HP CM1015 Color Laserjet All in One Printer
Average Reviews:

I bought this printer from Staples. Staples matches any competitor, and discounts 10% on top of the competitors price. In this case, OfficeMax had this printer for $300 (which is cheaper than anywhere else I've seen, online or otherwise). At Staples, this same printer was $499.99. So I showed them the OfficeMax price, and they gave me the printer for $270.
I have read some reviews of this printer saying that it isn't that fast. However, I have found it to be pretty quick. If you want to print 100's of pages at a time, or are spooling multiple jobs at a time in your office, this probably isn't the printer for you. But otherwise, it works really well. I have been using with a Linksys wireless print server, and it works great. Only downside is no scanner support over the print server....

I purchased one and it seemed to work well out of the box. I found that though it is lan ready the scan over the lan is lower quality then with the usb. kinda defeats the ethernet ability i got it for Old files to be scanned and saved to DVDs; slower scanning = more time spent. then after two weeks the fax failed to send couldn't figure it our hooked up a phone to the line and found a hum loud enough to interfere with sending. trouble shot the phone wires finally found the NOISE STOPPED WHEN THE MACHINE WAS POWERED DOWN! Had to be a fluke, sent back the machine and got another. this time 3 days before the same problem. They said could be line or power problem so reinstalled it in another room. Wow imagine hum on the phone line when the power is on. GROUND FAULT DESIGN PROBLEM FOLKS. the hum was lower and i could send if I scaled back the fax send speed. so now machine doesn't meet specs, can't scan at rated speed to server and won't send at top rated speed. sorry but this machine is a FAIL. Not ready for prime time. and the toner lasts at about 60% of rated prints. that's for B&W, we only do text printing, the color was for the hell of it. sorry HP every printer I had before was yours but you showed you weren't watching on this one. Final thought: on both machines the print was skewed about .3-.5 degrees quite a bit more than the .1 I am used to from HP

Samsung CLX-3175FN Color Laser Multi-function Printer Review

Samsung CLX-3175FN Color Laser Multi-function Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I rarely write reviews, but I have always used Amazon's site to preview products and read others' reviews that I decided it was time I gave back.
So I purchased the Samsung Printer from another seller at $299.00, the price alone is worth 2 stars.
Just a little about my purchase decisions....I've owned 20 printers since 1994; the first Canon color inkjet, BJC-600, and then the Epson Stylus, and now 20models later, the Samsung Color Laser CLX-3175 ... I never really thought I would buy a Samsung for a printer, usually I buy Epson or HP. Epson is better with inkjet and HP I feel is the King with laser technology. So...Why a Samsung....For 2 years I've been searching for a color all in one, it had to be laser, I was sick of the drying inks, I did not print much in full color but when I did, the tanks were empty or clogged.
Until I saw the Samsung I decided on either the HP all in one, like the Color LaserJet CM1312mfp or the Color LaserJet 2820mfp. The size of those machines delayed the purchase, I didn't have the room for it so I figured I would wait until my older HP LaserJet 6p died and my Epson 980 needed a new cartridge. I was looking for a Plasma screen on Samsung's website and that's where my love affair began. Within 20 minutes I ordered it! It's probably the fastest purchase decision on an electronic device ever for me. I usually wait until I read a dozen reviews etc. . But the price had me thinking even if it's not what I expected, I would just sell it when it needs toner or, I could always give it to my mother as she needs an all in one as is not as picky as I am.
Anyway back to the review, I ordered my printer on Thursday and received it on Monday. I unboxed the printer and it was already assembled with the cartridges preinstalled. The unit was nicely taped in all the spots that would come affixed during shipping. You only must install the arm for the ADF. Earlier that day, before I received the printer I went to Samsung's website and downloaded the drivers and software. Samsung did an extraordinary job with the software and drivers. The Printing software, The Scanner software, and the Printer Console software were all separate packages. So you did not have to install all three packages on all computers. Also, you have the option of installing a Mono printing software package, this is extremely valuable! This mean if you have children or co-workers who may waste your toner printing color documents, you can restrict them by only allowing them to print in black and white, and they wouldn't even know HAHA.
The software is NOT bloated like HP software, the color drivers are less then 10mb and so are the Scanner drivers. The printer console software is about 80mb; this package is basically like a printer monitor and extended menus. Personally I did not find needing to install it since the entire Printer setup could be viewed by entering its IP number, web setup.
I have to give this printer another star just because the drivers are simple, to the point and consists of less than 100mb and 20mb if that.
System setup was simple! All I had to do was plug it in and connect the network cable as I use it over the network. I have setup my router set to use DHCP, so the TCP/IP settings are all done automatically. Assuming all your computers are configured properly. When you run the drivers the setup asks you if it's a local setup meaning USB or Networked, after that it automatically finds your printer by IP number.
I choose to print a test page and 20 seconds later... a nicely printed demo printout. I was amazed. To test the copy quality I decided to copy it and compare. WOW that's all I can say, it took me 15 seconds to figure out which was the original, I purposely mixed them up. If it passed that test, then I knew it was a keeper!
The next thing I did was setup the Scanning feature. I ran the second drivers package for the scanner and just like the print driver interface, so was the same, chose network setup etc. The next thing I did was go to the scanner's pc interface and selected where I wanted the scanned documents to be stored. I then went to the printer, placed 10 sheets in the ADF, pressed the scan button, and then selected "scan to pc," my laptop's pc name was shown, and selected it by pressing "ok" then chose the resolution etc followed lastly by file type, which I chose for my test PDF. About a minute later, in my documents folder on my wireless notebook, there was a 10 page PDF! Now that's what I love!
For around $300.00 this was an excellent purchase. I can now digitize all my documents in PDF, organize them so with a search and a few seconds, any document could be found. Printing is excellent too, I will not complain if this printer shoots out a color page in 20 seconds, because it really doesn't bother me, because inkjet takes longer. The print quality from 1-10 I would have to say about 8.5. After all the resolution is 600 x 600 and that's a given. I printed a picture and it looked amazing, why not a ten then? Well only because some color laser jets have 1200 dpi, and that means double the dots and precision so my rating is ONLY an 8.5 because higher resolution printers exist. If they didn't exist I would rate the quality a 10.
I haven't faxed yet, I usually receive faxes via email through a subscription based service. I mainly need to print and scan.
This printer is feature packed! Another two features I will write about are the Scan and Print via USB and the web based console. If you do not have your home or office networked it's easy for others to print or scan, honestly all you do is plug in your USB flash drive and select the file, that's it! Or choose Save to USB for scanned documents. Great for when you want to shut down your pc and others have to print and are not networked.
The web based console is awesome; you can setup the time, fax stamp, and ringer setup all over HTML vs. pressing the printer's menu button a dozen times and key all the factors one by one. Also if there is a problem, tech support can look at the printer the same way you do.
The reason I am not giving this printer 5 stars is sadly because it does not have a manual feed slot and I really used it on other printers as I hate writing addresses on envelopes. The solution I have is to use labels. The added plus by not feeding envelopes is no jams or wear and tear on the rollers. I guess that helps with the disappointment. If you print Letterhead then either use the watermark and or Letterhead feature or you will have to slide the trey out when needed.
I hope this review helps!
ONE LAST TIP!!! USE COLOR LASER PAPER, SERIOUSLY YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPOINTED YOU DO NOT NEED TO PAY A TON FOR COLOR LASER PAPER EITHER, I PURCHASED A 500 PAGE REAM FOR $7.99 113 BRIGHTNESS!!!! 24LB. OFFICEDEPOT BRAND
UPC/BAR CODE 032476549257 I TRIED 3 PREMIUM TYPES AND THIS WAS THE BEST! FEELS EXPENSIVE!!! NICE AND SMOOTH AND OFCOURSE BRILLIANT!!

I do NOT recommend this machine for a network of any kind. I owned an 8170c which I believe was the first multi-function laser in this Canon league and although it had problems, it allowed me to do many tasks that the MF8450c can't do. This machine was provided to me by my insurance company after my 8170c was damaged in a fire. I can't get the MF8450c by-pass tray to work to save my life. I've called Canon tech support -- they blame it on software but it's NOT a software issue, that's just Canon's favorite excuse. My computer is new and all of my software is brand new and fully updated. The problem is the quirks of this machine. The scanner works nice but you actually have to go to the machine and change settings in order to get it to scan...every time you want to fax or print or scan, you have to change settings at the machine. The machine does not come with the software necessary to scan as did the 8170c. Fortunately, I had some great scanning software. I honestly thought that Canon would build a better product but I think this machine is downgrade from what I owned previously.
