Visioneer One Touch 9000 USB Scanner Review

Visioneer One Touch 9000 USB Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third scanner, the first one I got in maybe 1995, then one again in maybe 1999.
Finally scanning is not a chore, it is amazing how fast this thing is. With my older scanners it could take a couple minutes to scan and my computer would often get messed up. This thing scans in seconds, seconds!
Just make sure you have a USB 2 port (if not you can get an expansion card for pretty cheap) and you're ready to go.
This scanner is so cheap too, the older model ones (8920) that aren't USB 2.0 are actually more expensive if you buy from a brick and mortar retailer.
The only thing I don't like about it is during setup they make you register electronically with the software maker, and that software maker will try to sign you up for some "Free offers" and it seems some scumware too. But just check no.

Canon CanoScan LiDE 80 Color Scanner Review

Canon CanoScan LiDE 80 Color Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Canoscan LiDE 80 is easy to use for a variety of applications and the USB Hi-Speed (no longer USB2) interface is super fast and convenient since it not only is the data link, but supplies power to the scanner. If your power hub is as congested as mine, you'll appreciate this bonus. The LiDE 80 comes standard with a film adapter unit so you can scan 35 mm film or unmounted slide film. although the literature claims the film scanner runs at 2400 x 4800 DPI, I don't buy it. My Nikon fim scanner is 2900 DPI and gives MUCH better scans of 35 mm film. No contest. Then again, it was quite a bit more (4X)expensive than the LiDE 80 and only scans film...
The LiDE 80 includes software for automatic retouching of scratches and dust - and it also now has grain and fading correction. I tried these features on color photos taken over 50 years ago and was pleasantly surprised with the results. Overall, this is a nice package that goes well beyond the typical bargain scanner.

A film scanner that allows you to easily preserve negatives, the Canon LiDE 80 is a remarkably slim unit that's ready to meet big expectations. Don't let the 1.5-inch height fool you--Canon's Z-lid design allows it to perfectly accommodate originals up to one inch thick.
48-bit color and a 16-bit grayscale provide rich tones and clear contrasts; the 2,400 x 4,800 non-interpolated resolution handles the rest with clean, crisp detail. USB 2.0 interface means there's a single cord that supplies both power and connection, as well as a speedy transfer of data.
Bundled with the scanner is an impressive array of software for both Windows and Macintosh OS systems that will allow you to convert, smooth, and organize your images in a variety of ways. Perfect for home use, the Canon LiDE 80 is backed by a one-year warranty with Instant Exchange service.
What's in the Box Canon LiDE 80 scanner; power/USB 2.0 cable; instructions; setup poster; warranty information; Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 CD-ROM; CanoScan Setup CD-ROM, including ScanGear CS (Windows/Mac), CanoScan Toolbox (Windows/Mac), Arcsoft PhotoStudio (Windows/Mac), ArcSoft PhotoBase (Windows/Mac), ScanSoft OmniPage SE OCR (Windows/Mac), NewSoft Presto! Brother MFC-6490CW Professional Series Color Inkjet Wireless All-in-One Printer Review

Brother MFC-6490CW Professional Series Color Inkjet Wireless All-in-One Printer
Average Reviews:

I use AutoCAD at work and occasionally at home. My hubby and I jumped when we saw this printer: just had to get it! The print is as good as on the 11x17 HP inkjet at work, and this 11x17 scanner is a better size than any of the workplace ones (although I haven't used that function yet).
Hubby managed to hook up the 6490 to our home wifi without help, and no, he didn't set our wifi up originally, and no, he doesn't really understand how wifi works. In fact, hubby is visually handicapped! I'd rate ease of installation to wifi as 5 stars. The only glitch we had was that we didn't know we had a firewall, but the install disc talked us though that step too.
So now I'm sitting in bed typing on my Dell 1520 XP and sending to the printer in the other room. I don't know how it goes through ink, but will post back if I have an issue about that or anything else in the future.
Edit added 9-6-08: We just changed the first ink cartridge. I've been printing mainly with black, but also did about 300 very small (2"x3") photos with lots of sky. We managed 700 copies on the first black cartridge as far as I can tell. Cyan is at 50% and magenta and yellow don't really show as being low yet. The machine has been beeping for the last week warning us black was low, but only today did it quit printing due to lack of ink. The last page it did was as good as the first, so I have to wonder exactly how low that ink was when it quit on us. At any rate: we had no wasted prints from low ink and it was nice enough to tell us it had stopped. Can't say that with the HP at work!

600DPI Colour & Mono HandyScan Handheld Scanner w/ 4GB micro SD (PS410) Review

600DPI Colour and Mono HandyScan Handheld Scanner w/ 4GB micro SD (PS410)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I hope the designer of this product will read my review here, and make it better, because it could be a truly very useful tool.
I really think to some people this little tool can be very helpful. It's light, easy to carry, and works very well.
One thing I really want it changed is the distance from the side edge of the scanner to the line where the scan area starts. This won't be a problem if you just need to scan a piece of paper laying on the table. But once you try to scan a page in a book/thick magazine, you immediately feel the pain, because the scan area can not cover the whole page. As you can imagine, when you hold the scanner and move it from top to the bottom of the page in a book, you can't move the scanner too much to the left to let the scanning area cover the whole page, because the most you can do is to touch the edge of the scanner to the middle of the book. As a result, the scanned image often does not cover the 2 sides of the page. This is extremely painful, and almost make it unusable. I tried to scan from left to right (instead of from top to bottom), but it has its own problems (like you will need to rotate the image, and rotate different way depending odd page or even page).
This is obviously a design flaw. If the product testers have tried to scan book, they will immediately see the problem.
The attached software ABBYY Screenshot Reader does not work on my Windows 7 edition (there is no instructions saying which version of OS the software supports). I have it installed anyway, but then found it cannot be opened. The annoying thing is the computer keeps asking if I should allow ABBYY to access internet. If it cannot even be opened, why does it try to access internet. To download trojans?

I thought I should submit a review - from a non-IT, administrative-type user. We were required to get a digital scanner for our office and our company standard unit costs around $8,000. The person who handled the selection for us happened to know someone who purchased an HP Digital Sender and raved about it. We purchased ours for just over $3,000 saving our company $5,000! I have to add that that $8,000 unit I mentioned only scanned in B&W and the HP Digital Sender scans in both B&W and color! Other than having the machine installed by one of our IT people who wasn't familiar with the machine's operation and gave us no manual AND occasional email problems that are likely internal and not the fault of the Sender, we're THRILLED with this machine. Just this morning - I logged in, selected my scan settings, and scanned four pages in less than 30 seconds. By the time I put the dust cover back on the machine and returned to my office (10' away), my scan was in my email Inbox. This unit allows various image/quality/output settings AND has a pull-out keyboard (we found it almost by accident) so that you can type in your login info instead of tapping letters on the screen! I can't say enough, it is the best office equipment purchase made in our office since our IBM Correcting Selectric Typewriter! REALLY!

Canon PIXMA MP250 Inkjet Photo All-in-one Printer Review

Canon PIXMA MP250 Inkjet Photo All-in-one Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Canon makes great inkjet printers, and although the All-In-One (AIO) MP250 is so cheap considering that it comes with both the color and black color cartridges that it makes you wonder what shortcuts Canon have taken to give you the rediculously low price point, this AIO does not disappoint.
Scanning speed is impressive fast at 300dpi (max is 600 dpi), somewhere around 11 seconds for 8R color photos, and the copying function is around 5 to 10 seconds for a full page black and white. The device scans the first half of the page, prints it halfway and then scans the remaining portion of the page.
The downside to this device is that it comes with a very pathetic LED display that, when used without the manual, is a total nightmare. The maintenance feature displays up to 10 different functions using different alphabets, so unless you have them memorized, you won't know what the device is doing when you press one of the start buttons when the LED display is displaying anything other than a number. Also, the "Fit-To-Page" function seems to work only when you're copying an A4 document to 4R size. It does not seem to be able to blow up a smaller page to A4 size.
The device prints beautifully sharp photos, however, since it does not mix all four colors (it only uses CMY, rather than CMYK) to print them, the contrast of the pictures does look a bit weak. I've tested all kinds of Canon papers with this device and the output is impressively colorful and sharp.
Worth the money.

I put the roller kit into a Canon DR 2580C scanner that I just purchased used on Craigslist for $100. The scanner occasionally misfed 2 sheets instead of 1 sheet. The kit was easy to install, and completely fixed the misfeeding problem. No tools required. I don't know why it's called "exchange kit" because there were no instructions for sending back the old rollers.

Zardro Nano UV Disinfection Scanner (AS SHOWN)

The Zadro is small and folds closed like a small flip cell phone. It can easily fit in a pocket or your purse.
The Zadro only has one button that you press and hold for about 10 seconds. The purple light will come on along with a Red LCD light to let you know that it's working.
All you need to do is simply hold the light over an object like a phone, toilet seat, keyboard, etc for 10 seconds and the unit is supposed to kill all of the germs.
Unfortuately, since I'm not a scientist, I really cannot tell if germs are being killed.

Cobra ESD7100 9 Band Radar/Laser Detector Review

Cobra ESD7100 9 Band Radar/Laser Detector
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased two of these inexpensive radar detectors for my wife and kid's cars, mostly to keep them from getting tagged on a photo radar ticket for $80. The Cobra works pretty well with a couple of glaring problems. Mainly, the L or Laser alert falses all of the time and, seemingly, for no reason. The alarm will sound in strange places like parking lots, side streets, and alleys. I'm pretty sure there's no Laser-sighted radar being used in my alley. Each of the bands has a different sounding alarm, which is good, except they all sound like a something from a 1980's arcade game. I've compared the performance of the Cobra to my Escort Solo and the Cobra is definitely less sensitive. My Escort picked up a photo radar van from more than a half a mile away, while the Cobra was nearly in sight of the van. Still, the alarm was early enough to slow down before getting a ticket. Of course, the best thing about the Cobra is the price. It's an amazing value for a relatively sophisticated detector. If all you're looking for is a little extra help spotting the occassional speed trap, then the Cobra will get the job done, as long as you're aware of the limitations. Serious speeding should be left to the pricier Escorts, Valentines, and Beltronics.

The ESD 7100 is an affordable radar/laser detector with reliable and proven performance. This 9-band unit detects all radar frequencies and laser signals currently used in United States and Canada. It comes with the UltraBright Data Display and much more.

Nine-Band Protection The ESD 7100 provides detection and separate alerts for radar signals (X, K and Ka bands, with signal strength indicated), laser, VG-2, and detector-detector signals.
LaserEye Technology Cobra's LaserEye provides 360-degree detection of laser signals.
VG-2 Undetectable Provides complete immunity to VG-2 radar detector-detectors, making your device "invisible" but still alerting you to their use.
Instant-On Ready Detects radar guns with "instant-on" (very fast) speed monitoring capabilities, thanks to ultra-sensitive K-band detection.
Tone Alerts A distinctly different Alert tone is used for each type of signal detected (including separate tones for each laser signal). For X, K and Ka bandradar signals, the tones will repeat faster as you approach the signal source. The repeat rate of the tones gives you useful information about the signal detected.
UltraBright Data Display Provides easy recognition of band detected by use of band identification icons.
City/Highway Modes Allows the user to select operating mode, reducing the frequency of falsing in densely polulated urban areas.
Safety Alert Warns drivers of the presence and/or approaching emergency vehicles, railroad crossing, and road hazard locations equipped with Cobra's exclusive Safety Alert transmitters.
Manual Mute Or Auto Mute Set the Auto Mute function to automatically mute alert tones after initial warning, to avoid annoyance.
Simple Mounting The ESD 7100 mounts easily on your windshield or dashboard with the included suction mount, and is powered via your vehicle's cigarette lighter adapter.
What's in the Box ESD 7100 Detector Unit, Straight 12V DC Power Cord, Windshield Mounting Bracket with suction cups, Instruction manual

I had to return this scanner because it did not capture text near the edges of most of the business cards, no matter what I tried (Calibrating, Re-Orienting and re-feeding the cards). Updating the scanner drivers with the website download did not help. Visioneer's online support is unacceptably awful. Also, the bundled OCR software is not up to the task. The trial version of Corex Cardscan which I loaded for comparison performed much better with more accurate text recognition and field placement.

I was a big fan of this scanner until recently.
It scans books fast without damaging spines.
I used it very carefully.
I used another scanner of mine for non-book materials, because I didn't want to waste the lamp life.
The result? The lamp died after around 200 scans!
I used it intermittently, so I was out of warranty when the lamp died.
I've used scanners of several manufacturers, and this is the first time that a scanner lamp died on me.
In sum, $300 for 200 scans is not recommendable at all.
Added: I got another reason to hate this scanner. Service of the company is horrible. I sent several emails about my problem, but never got answers.

SVP FS1200-Black Digital Film 35mm Negatives & Slides Scanner Review

SVP FS1200-Black Digital Film 35mm Negatives and Slides Scanner
Average Reviews:

This product did allow me to scan the family slides, but it did not live up to its description. First of all, the software did not work with Vista, even though it was supposed to work with up through Windows 7. It loaded OK, but then "could not find the scanner." There was no way to get manufacturer help: no links, no printed web address, and not even a telephone number. Finally I loaded the software into an older computer running on Windows XP. It worked, but it was touchy. Sometimes the screen would flicker or freeze entirely. It seemed to be helped by adjusting the display settings on my computer.
After scanning about four carousels of slides (several hundred), the rear flap of the scanner snapped leaving a dangling part inside the unit. I then had to watch very carefully to avoid catching the slide tray so that the tray would not become lodged partway in. At some point the flap came completely off.
Fortunately I had access to an XP computer, and the broken flap did not prevent me from finishing my project. I was not able to manipulate the photos as I had hoped, but at least my family memories are now digitized. If you have a computer running XP and your project is relatively small, the SVP-1200 might work out OK. Otherwise, you should probably consider something more user friendly and more durable.

I just baught this all in one , because I needed to do some faxing, getting it out of the box and setting it up was simple, you just take it out of the box, and its ready to go. However the instructions on how to use it are in my opinion very limited, for example inputting your name or other information into it requires prior knowledge on how to do it, you must know about texting, since the instructions do not tell you you have to use the key pad like you would in texting. When you enter a fax number and you enter a wrong number it does not tell you you can back up and erase it by pushing the left side mark on the Ok ring. If you go to their website, it is not much better, Iam still fooling around with it getting to know everthing about how it works, so far it has been very simple. It works excellent, I have faxed a ton of papers, printed a whole bunch and copied a few, I have not used it for picture printing or copying yet but in printing the colors have all been very good so far, and it has worked flawlesly. It is kind of noisy but it is of no consequence to me. All in all Iam very satisfied with it.
PS.. Iam 72 years old and not very computer literate!!!

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have acquired the 8560MFP through the XEROX FREE COLOR Printer program. This requires purchase of solid ink through Xerox. While the solid ink is very convenient and easy to change, the ink life does not seem to meet the stats of Xerox. For the total cost of printing 11,000 pages in about 2 months, I have already spent about $900.00 in supplies. Within two weeks a technician had to come in to check out why there was shadow ink on other parts of the page where nothing was supposed to print. At that time he already replaced the maintenance Kit. He used about 1/4 of a ream of my paper for cleaning. Since then I have already had to replace the maitenance Kit once again, with an extended maintenance kit. Being on the 3rd kit I am already beginning to see double printing, the same words printing elsewhere on the page.
I have the printer on a network. On 3 occasions, when no one was printing a job, the printer began printing on its own, 2 to 3 lines per page of any imagineable characters. This would begin at any time of the day with no one even on any of the computers. It printed about 1/4 of a ream of 500 before someone came into the office and found it printing. I assume it would have completed the entire paper drawer and then would have had to stop because it didn't have anything else to eat.
There were a couple of paper jams in the paper feeder.
I do not like the faxing aspect of the machine as for the cost of the machine, of about $1800 if it were purchased, it does not have distinct ring detection nor incoming fax detection capabilities and requires an additional phone line for receiving faxes. Consider the additional cost for another phone line. Cheaper to buy separate computer software with distint ring detection than another phone line.
There seems to be a problem with the software and its use with 64 bit Windows 7. There does not seem to be any control on the scanning from the computer. If I scan manually, I can not seem to locate where the printer stores the scanned copy while searching from the Windows 7 computer. This could be more user friendly.
I am certainly not satisfied with the print speed in color. While claims are made of up to 30 pages per minute, the key words are "UP TO". With minimal color on the page, I am only achieving about 15 pages per minute.
I am not happy with the service agreement that comes with the program. It is mostly over the telephone and they break the technicians down into two groups. The first encounter is with technicians who are not really able to solve most of the problems, and a second group that takes over after the first group is not able to answer the problems. As it stands, the technicians have not been able to stop the printer from printing all on its own.
I am not sure if the is recent technology, but it seem so. This printer needs many bugs worked out of it. I am on the verge of sending the printer back and quitting the program. The concept is very attractive, but it has proven to be excessively costly and caused myself and secretarial staff to pull out their hair with all its "peculiarities".
I better go check the printer to see if it is behaving...

Installed first unit on an HP Desktop running Windows 7, Home premium 64Bit System. Scanner worked well while scanning a document from the glass but the moment you used the Auto Document Feeder light areas appeared on the left and right side of Document. Decided to order a second PL1530, which came in 2 days, and return the original. After installing the second Scanner the results were exactly the same. Excellent scans from the Glass and light areas on the lelt and right of Document when using the ADF. Spent a few hours with Plustek Tech Support on the phone but they couldn't resolve the problem. They said they would send a prepaid UPS mailing label to return the product to them for inspection but they never sent out the label. Decide to install the second scanner on an Acer Laptop running Windows 7, 32Bit System. The results were exactly the same. It's obvious this model has a problem scanning from the ADF under Windows 7. Returned both scanners and ordered a unit from a different manufacturer which is working perfectly from the glass and ADF.
