Beltronics Vector 985 Radar Laser Detector Review

Beltronics Vector 985 Radar Laser Detector
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent a lot of time researching radar detectors before purchasing this one. I wanted to make sure I got the best one for the job before I laid out roughly [$]. I've been using this detector for a little over a month and so far, I've had no problems. There are very few false alarms. The only time I have trouble is if I'm parked right in front of an automatic door. And even in this case you can turn off X-band so that it won't chirp. One of the greatest things about this detector is the owners manual, it walks you through all of the options and diagrams radar scenarios to help inform the user of what to avoid. When you mail in your registration you get notified when upgrades become available.
The only problem I had with buying a radar detector is that there was not enough information on individual models. I hope this helps you make an informed choice. Enjoy.
Basic Features:
You can turn of x-band, k-band and laser by choosing one of the 3 city options. There's the highway mode as well, or my favorite, Autoscan, which will detect all radar, but only report strong signals, not weak x-band signal which is most likely a door opener. Autoscan mode lets you drive by shopping centers without having to change from highway to city. The detector has 360 degree Laser detection and 180 degrees detection for all other bands. The detector is sensitive enough to pick up laser and other band signals off of other cars to give you more advanced notice.
Advanced Features:
You can have it tell you exactly what frequency each signal is in hertz, not just what band. You can set it to be a voltage meter and it reads how much power is in your battery. You can also adjust start-up modes, if you don't like hearing it cycle-through all of the different bands, you can change that option. This detector also comes with cloaking capabilities which make it invisible to police radar-detector sensors.
Safety Features:
This radar detector not only detects highway safety signs, it will also report a message from the safety sign. The message will scroll through on your detector at the pace you specify.
Convenience Features:
The volume is adjustable, from 0-9 so you can adjust to hear over your radio. You can auto-mute, where it only chirps the first time it senses radar and not incessantly, great for driving with sleeping passengers. You can also select and adjust the brightness of the LED read-out at the push of a button.
Mounting Features:
You can mount this detector with velcro, a clip, suction cups, or by adding rubber feet to the bottom.
All of the mounting options come separate so you can choose how you want it. You can also mount it upside down, and by changing the read-out setting, you will be able to read the LED screen right side up. This detector also comes with a shorter curled cord and a 10ft straight cord, an extra fuse for the cigarette adapter plug and a travel case which holds all of the accessories.

Designed exclusively for those seeking the ultimate in performance, the Beltronics Vector 985 radar laser detector provides professional drivers with every amenity and then some. The Vector 985 is unsurpassed in X, K, and Ka radar sensitivity, features, and functions, and it uses Motorola Flash Microcontroller technology for software upgradeability. To maintain its readiness to accommodate new police traffic monitoring technologies (like Spread Spectrum), this detector has the highest possible capability to adapt to new types of traffic radar monitoring. It uses a total of 64 digital voice and text messages to give you the most specific data possible. The detector also offers different modes for different modes of travel, including a highway mode (for suburban travel), a city X mode (for moderate urban travel), and city X/K/Ka mode for "extreme" urban travel).
A built-in tutorial walks you through all the unit's features, and the display can be set for bright, dim, or dark. Beltronics's proprietary AccuSweep feature pinpoints detection of Ka narrow frequencies, while its AutoScan mode automatically adjusts to X/K/Ka sensitivity levels wherever you drive. Five operational modes consist of normal, modification, quick start, tech mode, and voltage-meter mode.
Other driver selectable features include X band (on/off), K band (on/off), Super Wideband Ka (on/off), audio alerts (auto, mute, or continuous), radar/laser (digital voice or unique tones), Safety Warning System (on/off, voice or tone), audio/visual scroll rate (fast or slow), and an option for inverted display. The unit also has fully adjustable audio levels, instant on/pulsed radar warning, quick volume, and memory retention. It includes a custom anodized aluminum travel case.

Average Reviews:

Having shopped for a detector for a while, I finally settled on this one. I have had it for a few months, I live in New York and waited until I got back from a road trip to Florida to review this detector...
On the road trip, it picked up every cop that was staked out. Every single one. I had zero tickets. In Maryland, the troopers were using laser. I was going through at 2AM, doing about 85...The detector let me know about 7 seperate laser attempts. Every time, I slowed down right away and was fine. There were some times when I couldn't even see the officer responsible!
In other states, the radar KA band let me know about all of the troopers around well in advance. I did turn it off for DC and VA in accordance with their laws. The strobe and safety alerts worked well in Florida, when there was an accident, and later when an ambulance was behind me and needed to get through. VG-2 alerts also work well, as I was radar detector detected several times throughout the trip.
I know that most detectors are terrible for laser protection, but this one seems superior to others. Granted, the officer usually has your speed recorded by the time the laser detector goes off, but the detector seemed to work time and again for laser for me! The range of radar detection, especially for KA band, is pretty far. In a straight stretch I have picked up signals from almost half a mile back!
The only potentially annoying thing about this detector is the X band detection, which goes off any time I am around a building security system (banks, car dealerships, etc) or automatic doors at like a supermarket or CVS or something. This can be turned off, however!!
ONE IMPORTANT NOTE: A radar detector is only as good as how you have it mounted!! My friend has the same detector and he absolutely hates it, says it never picks anything up. I saw how it was mounted, he has it on the dash, below the wipers...a radar detector is a line-of-sight device, people! It has to be able to see all around your vehicle in order for it to be of any use to you! So long as you have it mounted sell, clear of obstructions, I don't think you can get any better protection!

I've found the Cobra brand to be the best "reasonably" priced detectors out there. This one consistantly picks up our friends in uniform about 1/2 to a mile away. Not too many false signals. If you want LASR warning.... forget it. It's always too late no matter what you buy.

Any one looking for a good radar detector, here it is. Of course I could have spent $500-1,000 on a better radar/laser detector or system, but who wants to do that?? It does it's job and everything I expected it to do! I traveled out of state during the holidays (holidays=many cops) and it saved my butt 3 times on the way there, and 2 times on the way back. It already has paid for itself and then some! Not to mention the two times it saved me this morning on my way to work! The only thing I was worried about when purchasing a detector was, would it give me enough time to slow down, the answer is YES. By the time I brake to the desired speed limit, I look around for a few seconds, then when I think it is a false alarm, there's the cop. Overall, great purchase and worth every cent!

Ok, let me start off by saying, " for a hundred bucks, it aint too bad!" It doesn't have the best range, but it does have a good deal of features to play with. It actually doesn't false too much more than other detectors I own (bel 955, whistler pro 78). Definately has less range than those two, but at least it mutes itself without having to push a button like the bel! That to me is a big issue. Reaching up to the window to push a little button while driving can be a little hazerdous! HaHa. It does have nice tones to it's alarms unlike the screeching bel and is fairly loud. It does have a nice coiled cord unlike the whistler which uses a straight one that flops around in front of my radio. The display can be tough to see in daylight at times. It seems to me, Cobra is just putting a product out there to make max profit! Where bel and whistler seem to put more emphasis on quality and performance. And the prices reflect it. That's really the difference here! Like I said, it's not bad for the price, and it really does detect radar albeit from less range than most. So if you're budget doesn't allow more expensive units, I'd say this isn't a bad choice.

Escort Passport 9500ci Custom-Installed Radar Detector Review

Escort Passport 9500ci Custom-Installed Radar Detector
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a car-guy, I've owned a ton of radar detectors. The past few years, the choices have been very limited and I've tried most of them.
I've gone through a Valentine One (V1), a Escort Passport 9500i and finally the 9500ci.
In terms of RADAR, all three are nearly identical in terms performance and sensitivity.
Here's a quick progressive comparison of the other features.
The V1 has the arrows, which is great and all, but I didn't really need to know where the threat is coming from. I just needed to 1) know the threat was real and 2) slow down to the posted speed limit. I replaced the V1 because it was just too noisy during my commute. A great detector, but too much chatter.
I upgraded to the 9500i. It shined because of it's built-in GPS feature. I pass by five K-based RADAR Speed Limit signs each way on my commute. With GPS marking, I could easily lock out those specific false signals. The next time I would pass by, the system would be silent. When approaching one of these "marked" locations, the GPS icon on the display would start to rotate. This was essentially the 9500i saying, "I'm picking up the radar signal, but I'm not "bleeping" because you told me this exact location is a false". Simply awesome. The system is quiet until an unknown threat is detected.
The one thing I still hated; constantly removing the unit from the windshield every time I would park downtown or in a not-so-secure location. It was a thief-magnet and I didn't want to attract any unwanted attention.
That is what finally led me to the 9500ci. It takes all of the features of the 9500i and gives you an "integrated/stealth install". No more tacky black box suction-cupped to the windshield and no more worries!
The 9500ci also includes a pre-loaded Red Light/Speed Camera database which is upgradeable via the installed USB port. As you approach a Camera in the database, the system alerts you at a user-defined distance. Very handy.
If there was one not-so-great feature with the 9500ci, it would be the laser shifting. The kit includes ZR4 laser shifters. They are "decent" performers against some types of LIDAR guns, but not as good as top-of-the line Laser Interceptors or the new Blinder system. There are a ton of resources/reviews on line. Many include detailed performance figures. Do your homework with regards to what LIDAR guns are used in your area to help determine what system is best for you.
Installation took two days and included a custom-fabricated mount so the heads would be placed "just" ahead of the lower grill and level with the road. This would provide maximum range and functionality. The GPS unit, brain and speaker are all located under the leather instrument cluster shroud, just below the windshield. The USB port and a "kill" switch are located under the dashboard. The controls and display were stealthy mounted in the ashtray, also using a custom-fabricated panel. Be sure to check out the customer images I uploaded.
The only other negative and why this ultimately got 4-stars instead of 5-stars is the price. $1600 plus another grand or more to have it "properly" installed. You gotta pay to play they say. :)

Whistler Xtr-540 Battery Operated Radar Detector Review

Whistler Xtr-540 Battery Operated Radar Detector
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The XTR-540 works great. Finds the radar long before I can spot the police. It is a great tool to keep your speed in check. Being cordless,I can swap to my motorcycle with ease.
Battery lasts about 4-5 days of 50 mile roundtrip commuting.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Whistler Xtr-540 Battery Operated Radar Detector

Whistler's XTR-540 laser/radar detector gives you full band protection from radar signals, 360-degree laser detection, Whistler's patented VG-2 cloaking technology, and plenty more. The brilliant blue text display, along with tone alerts and Whistler's unique alert periscopes, mean you'll never miss an alert. Competitive features and competitive pricing.

Battery Powered The unit can provide approximately 15 hours of laser/radar detection with three rechargeable AA Ni-MH batteries, or you can plug it into your vehicle's cigarette lighter adapter (this will recharge the batteries).
Blue LCD Text Display The XTR-540's brilliant display provides distinct visual confirmation of signals detected, signal strength, and indicates engaged modes of operation.
Patented POP Mode Detection There are new guns out there that operate just like the instant-on guns of the past but with a very tough new twist--POP mode! This new gun is a normal K and Ka band radar gun detectable by most radar detectors made in the past 30 years until it's in POP mode. When the gun is in POP Mode and activated, a brief burst of energy, less than 1/15 of a second, is transmitted and the vehicle's speed is quickly acquired. A detector without POP Mode detection capability cannot respond to this brief transmission, but the XTR-540 can.
Low Profile Alert Periscopes Whistler's Low Profile Alert Periscopes provide an added attention getting visual alert. The two extra LEDs flash on and off when the unit alarms to provide a unique visual alert.
3 City Modes/Highway Mode Highway mode provides full audio and visual warning of laser/radar systems while maintaining full sensitivity. Highway mode is the default setting of all Whistler's laser/radar detectors. City mode helps reduce the annoyance of automatic door openers and burglar alarm alerts by providing an initial alert (same distance as Highway Mode) then remaining quiet unless the signal strength becomes very strong. When the signal increases the unit will alert briefly to notify you of the change in signal strength.
Stay Alert The Stay Alert feature is designed to test a driver's alertness. Within 30 to 60 seconds after the feature is engaged an alert is sounded; to show alertness, the driver must press the volume, city or the mute button within 3-5 seconds. If a button is pressed within 3-5 seconds, the cycle is repeated. If a button was not pressed within 3-5 seconds the unit alarms at full volume and the display shows an unique visual alert.
Quiet/Auto Quiet Modes Pressing QUIET before a signal is detected engages Auto Quiet Mode, which automatically reduces the audio level after the initial warning to a low audio level setting. Pressing QUIET during a radar/laser encounter silences audio alerts, while allowing visual alerts to keep you informed.
Alert Priority When two or more signals are received at the same time, the alert priority is: Laser, VG-2, Speed Radar, Safety Radar.
Example: If X band is alerting, then suddenly a VG-2 signal is detected, the VG-2 warning will override the X band alert.
Vehicle Battery Saver Mode The Vehicle Battery Saver Mode automatically shuts off your detector within 3 hours if you forget to turn it off. The timer is reset if the detector is turned off, unplugged or any button is pressed before the 6 hours have expired. The detector will alert you with an audible and visual warning before it shuts off.
Safety Warning System--SWS This relatively new radar is not for speed detection at all, it is used to keep you informed of highway safety. Transmitters are installed and programmed (for example: in emergency vehicles) to make you aware of possible situations that may require your attention, such as: ambulance vehicles that are moving or stationary, road hazards ahead, road construction delays or detours, etc.
VG-2 Detection Mode The VG-2, also known as a "radar detector detector," is a special receiver used by police to detect signals radiated by a radar detector. The XTR-540 alerts you its presence, and thanks to Whistler's patented VG-2 cloaking technology provides undetectability.

Cobra ESD7100 9 Band Radar/Laser Detector Review

Cobra ESD7100 9 Band Radar/Laser Detector
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased two of these inexpensive radar detectors for my wife and kid's cars, mostly to keep them from getting tagged on a photo radar ticket for $80. The Cobra works pretty well with a couple of glaring problems. Mainly, the L or Laser alert falses all of the time and, seemingly, for no reason. The alarm will sound in strange places like parking lots, side streets, and alleys. I'm pretty sure there's no Laser-sighted radar being used in my alley. Each of the bands has a different sounding alarm, which is good, except they all sound like a something from a 1980's arcade game. I've compared the performance of the Cobra to my Escort Solo and the Cobra is definitely less sensitive. My Escort picked up a photo radar van from more than a half a mile away, while the Cobra was nearly in sight of the van. Still, the alarm was early enough to slow down before getting a ticket. Of course, the best thing about the Cobra is the price. It's an amazing value for a relatively sophisticated detector. If all you're looking for is a little extra help spotting the occassional speed trap, then the Cobra will get the job done, as long as you're aware of the limitations. Serious speeding should be left to the pricier Escorts, Valentines, and Beltronics.

The ESD 7100 is an affordable radar/laser detector with reliable and proven performance. This 9-band unit detects all radar frequencies and laser signals currently used in United States and Canada. It comes with the UltraBright Data Display and much more.

Nine-Band Protection The ESD 7100 provides detection and separate alerts for radar signals (X, K and Ka bands, with signal strength indicated), laser, VG-2, and detector-detector signals.
LaserEye Technology Cobra's LaserEye provides 360-degree detection of laser signals.
VG-2 Undetectable Provides complete immunity to VG-2 radar detector-detectors, making your device "invisible" but still alerting you to their use.
Instant-On Ready Detects radar guns with "instant-on" (very fast) speed monitoring capabilities, thanks to ultra-sensitive K-band detection.
Tone Alerts A distinctly different Alert tone is used for each type of signal detected (including separate tones for each laser signal). For X, K and Ka bandradar signals, the tones will repeat faster as you approach the signal source. The repeat rate of the tones gives you useful information about the signal detected.
UltraBright Data Display Provides easy recognition of band detected by use of band identification icons.
City/Highway Modes Allows the user to select operating mode, reducing the frequency of falsing in densely polulated urban areas.
Safety Alert Warns drivers of the presence and/or approaching emergency vehicles, railroad crossing, and road hazard locations equipped with Cobra's exclusive Safety Alert transmitters.
Manual Mute Or Auto Mute Set the Auto Mute function to automatically mute alert tones after initial warning, to avoid annoyance.
Simple Mounting The ESD 7100 mounts easily on your windshield or dashboard with the included suction mount, and is powered via your vehicle's cigarette lighter adapter.

Whistler XTR-265 Laser-Radar Detector (Grey) Review

Whistler XTR-265 Laser-Radar Detector (Grey)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I will admit up front that I bought this unit based solely on price. That, and the fact I am a long time buyer of Whistler radar detectors. Like another reviewer here, my first experience with a radar detector was a now ancient "fuzz buster" that never really failed on me, but merely became obsolete over time. I took a long break over the years from radar detectors mostly due to the fact that I am older now and hardly ever in that much of a hurry. Unfortunately under the disguise of supposedly only being interested in saving our lives, radar traps and pull overs from rolling radar has increased dramatically over the last few years where I live. Severe financial problems on the state and local level has been holding us in its iron grip here long before it became fashionable nation wide. So now that things have gone from normally flat busted to fiddling with financial collapse, the police in the state have expanded their role as peace makers to that of rolling revenue agents. There was a long time here where friendly warnings where handed out generously for a 40 plus year driver like myself cruising a couple of miles over the speed limit. The police had bigger fish they were after. A true vehicular desperado I was not. Those days of yore have unfortunately vanished in the wake of the towns and states flashing empty pockets all around.
In an effort not to see my own contribution to the problem come at the hands of purportedly "saving my life", I purchased this Whistler 265 model about 6 months ago. I was quite taken aback by the wide range of prices on these units at first. The last time I bought one there was perhaps a $50 price difference between the economy model and a true space age unit. Now it can be as high as $400 or more. Since this 265 was a Whistler that was capable of picking up all the radar technology currently available, and cost about $45, I decided this was the one for me. All I can say from my own experience with this fine unit is I can only imagine what those higher priced models really do, for this 265 seems to perform it all quite nicely. Simply put, its the best $45 I have spent in a very long time. The 265 is easy to install on your windshield with the bracket provided, and a coil style cord plugs into your cigarette lighter, or 12 volt outlet that just about all cars provide these days. (If you prefer to install on your dash or elsewhere, a velcro strip will hold this unit easily). As far as features, the 265 seems to have all one could ask for. This Whistler provides tone alerts, quiet modes, numeric icon displays, alert priority, and even a vehicle battery saver. It also has both visual and audible alerts, and a volume control. As far as actually detecting and warning you of any radar in the area, mine has so far never missed a beat. Although I am not much of a heavy footer that needs as much advanced warning as possible, I would have to say that any warning that does come from the 265 has been in advance enough to save me from being picked up in about 80% of the cases, or more. It is especially capable in picking up stationary radar, which although a lot of advertisements for these devices claim has gone out of style in favor of rolling radar, is still well in vogue here in my neck of the woods. I have picked up signals so far in advance in some of the stationary cases that at times I felt the the detector is picking up something else. Then lo and behold, smokey appears on the side of the road. For rolling radar, the advance warning is a little more random, but still very effective in my opinion. It is omni directional and will pick up a radar signal far off the side of you as easily as it does ahead, or behind you. I love this little unit and feel it is personally the best deal in detectors that there is going on the market presently.
In conclusion, I should mention that I live in a small town. There are no real heavily congested areas, or locales where there is any real city atmosphere. So my detector doesn't really have to work that hard at distinguishing alarms and doors openers from the real McCoy. If you live in a city or any form of heavily congested area with a lot of commerce, it very well may be a good idea to move up to a higher priced, more sensitive model. Personally I feel that the only difference between the high ticket radar detectors and this model is their ability to differentiate between real speed radar, and any other device that uses the same technology. That, and perhaps a little more technology in giving you a shade more warning. For a small town atmosphere like where I live, I honestly feel that the Whistler XTR-265 is all the radar detector you should ever need. Unless you simply love to speed, or the local police seem to have a special fondness for you, why pay more. A good, solid, dependable unit. Highly recommended...

Like the entry-level XTR-145, Whistler's XTR-265 is an affordable, full-featured laser/radar detector. With total band protection from radar signals, 360-degree laser detection, Whistler's patented VG-2 cloaking technology, and plenty more, you'll get an effective detector that doesn't break the bank. The XTR-265 adds Whistler's patented POP mode, a numeric icon display, dim/dark modes, safety warning system (SWS) alerts, and the "stay alert" function to the feature list.

Total Band Protection Provides Complete Band Coverage of all Laser, Radar (X, K, and Ka bands), VG-2, and Safety Radar bands.
Numeric Icon Display The XTR-265's bright numeric icon display offers easy-to-read icons to indicate power, city mode, radar band identification, and signal strength. It adds a seven-segment digital display to show signal strength indication and band identification.
POP Mode Alerts There are new guns out there that operate just like the instant-on guns of the past but with a very tough new twist--POP mode. A detector without POP Mode detection capability cannot respond to this brief transmission. This one can.
360 Degree Protection Units with 360 protection detect signals from all radar, laser, VG-2 and safety radar systems wherever they come from; front, rear or from the side.
VG-2 Cloaking The VG-2, also known as a "radar detector detector," is a special receiver used by police to detect signals radiated by a radar detector. Thanks to Whistler's patented VG-2 cloaking technology, your detector will remain invisible to VG-2 detection.
3 City Modes/Highway Mode Highway mode provides full audio and visual warning of laser/radar systems while maintaining full sensitivity, and is the default setting of Whistler laser/radar detectors. City mode helps reduce the annoyance of automatic door openers and burglar alarm alerts by providing an initial alert (same distance as Highway Mode) then remaining quiet unless the signal strength becomes very strong. When the signal increases the unit will alert briefly to notify you of the change in signal strength.
Dim/Dark Mode Dim/Dark Mode reduces the illumination of the display. Dim or dark can be engaged during an alert. In Dark Mode, the display goes dark for as long as a signal is being detected and for 20 seconds after, then the display returns to the dimmer setting.
Stay Alert Whistler's exclusive Stay Alert feature tests your alertness on long trips.
Alert Priority When two or more signals are received at the same time, the alert priority is: Laser, VG-2, Speed Radar, Safety Radar.
Example: If X band is alerting, then suddenly a VG-2 signal is detected, the VG-2 warning will override the X band alert.
Twin Alert Periscopes Whistler's Low Profile Alert Periscopes provide an added attention getting visual alert. The two extra LEDs flash on and off when the unit alarms to provide a unique visual alert.

Saved a tone of money with this. I'll be honest and I am sorry for this, but I do speed on freeways in America. Sorry, but in my opinion speed limits are way too low here. It's hard to drive on Autobahns with no speed limits one day, and then the next thing you know, you live in America and you have to live with 55/65 mph. So to cut the chase, I've purchased this unit to avoid tickets and to replace my previous lower end Cobra that had a lot of false alarms.
Summary:
Fake alarms reduced by 90% (besides funny moments such as warning me of Train and Railroad when going to Safeway)
Voice warning comes handy
Detects highway patrol/cops from far far away, including their most advanced guns, thus saving you a fortune.
Beware some officers know their job well: Will not protect you from those smart officers, who know how to ticket you by tailgating you. No detector will help you against that one. Trust me I got ticket that way.
Checked legality with friend of mine who is an Officer and found out that these are not illegal in California. BUT:Keep on mind that seeing one in your car will certainly NOT make Officer happy, and it WILL put you in A bad light.
To conclude: Well paid off investment. I was supposed to be ticketed dozen of times w/out this. At least I am honest and hope that helps. But don't be me. I still don't encourage you to you to speed and drive unsafely. Be smart, at the end of the day all that speeding, will save you only 2-3 minutes. I promise to change, too.
:)
P.S. If in need for speed: Go to the race track.

(More customer reviews)
This is definately not a pretty radar detector. In the days of Apple design, and GPS's looking great and slim, LCD televisions, and kitchen appliances looking and functioning great; there's not a lot of excuse for poor industrial design. More on the construction in a moment.
January 8, 2010 update. The Railroad signal also works, it went off near a railroad track. The Emergency Vehicle alarm has gone off a lot lately, for police cars and Ambulances. Very nice.
The display has gotten a distinct burn in for the speed display (I'm testing Cobra's warranty repair service with this - January 23, 2010 - a brand new core unit arrived quickly, Cobra made good on the warranty, no questions asked). The display does not work at all if you leave the detector in the cold, around freezing. Once the unit warms up it finally works, but it will be an ugly orange for a long time. And see the comments about getting a bean bag mount - the suction cups do not work at all in the cold.
SOFTWARE update - Cobra now offers 64 bit for Vista and XP software. It only took them 6 months to deliver the update. Boo on Cobra for pitiful software support. They get really bad marks for their inability to support their device. Follow the install directions very carefully.
October 10, 2009 update. The Emergency Vehicle alarm finally went off. Another that made me almost jump out of my skin, the noise is a lot like a police siren. A police car was pulling somebody over with siren going. Well before I could hear the siren, the alarm went off on the screen. I had already seen the lights before the alarm went off. If a police car is equiped with a special transmitter, the Cobra will go off.
September 26, 2009 update. Laser detector finally went off. About made me jump out of my skin. The sound is kind of Star Wars, crazy buzzy sound. The goofiest icon come up, its an image of a gun with a laser sight on it. But the good news - it works. Definately works just fine. I've also had some fun with this unit, the Chicago area has a ton of construction with threatened photo radar speed enforcement. The amazing thing, if they ever turn on those radar guns that are out there right now, Chicago will make a ton of money. This unit warns for those guns a long ways in advance, and it beeps like insanity whenever I am on top of one. This thing really works.
June 2, 2009 Tech Support update. Well this is not the fastest company I have ever met. Web support via the web form is pitiful at best. Twice I entered the exact same information and never got a response over a 1 week time period. I finally used an email address (it's buried in an advertisement looking thing on the FAQ's) and got a response within two hours of their normal business hours. And I got a nasty gram from somebody telling me to relax, tech support would get back to me (after over 7 work days, I lost all hope), they did receive all three of my emails. Frankly, a really poor showing on their part. God help you if you need tech support from this company. The FAQ section for the radar detectors is just awful. Pretty well worthless.
Back to Original Review:
The really great news, this radar detector flat out works. It works well. I'm amazed at how well it works. Photo, Ka, X, and Caution Zones - saw them all, they all work just great thank you very much. Haven't seen a laser alert, emergency vehicles, or a Railroad crossing alert yet; but I'd have every reason to believe those will work when they are really there.
The good - 1/2 mile down the road, Ka chirped on, the lovely lady said Ka Alert, and two balls of signal strength. Sure enough, a 1/2 mile later down the raod, a policeman with radar pulled somebody over. Pretty darn good proof the unit can detect radar.
Unboxing - I've posted some pictures of unboxing. It's actually some pretty decent packaging and got my heart rate up just a bit. You see, I used to be addicted to radar detectors. And then Laser came along, and I lost interest, (I'd already been through X band, then get a new one that would do Ka, enough already). Well that whole world has settled down now.
What is in the box? This funky looking radar detector with a big honking screen on the back end of it. And this really hideous half arm, half wart hanging off the side of the body; the GPS receiver. A coiled power cord. A goofy looking female mini-USB to male USB cable. A really crummy cheap window suction cup mount. A chunk of velcro. And an instruction book bag.
The installation. Ouch. The first step, you have to register the GPS and update the database. If you use the wrong model number to register the GPS you'll be ripped off your lifetime Aura database updates. Make sure you use the XRS 9960G model number - not the number on the radar detector. And you have to input the serial number off the little dinky GPS receiver. Once registered, you then have to download and install a little piece of software that will live on your computer forever - it's called RDA GPSL-55 (you got me how they came up with that gorgeous name). Then you are supposed to plug in the USB cable and the GPS receiver. Now if you have Vista, the website says you are on your own. With XP they give you step by step instructions. Well, the best deal, if you have Vista or XP 64 Bit - don't even bother. The software / driver will not work at all, nothing, nada. So you have to find a 32 bit machine to do this update. My Aspire One netbook did the job. Then you have to remove the GPS when you start up the RDA GPSL-55 software, and you have to enter the GPS serial number. Once all that craziness is done, you might get lucky and the GPS will update with it's brand spanking new database. Mine finally did after three tries.
So software set up - just not cool at all. Forget 64 Bit operating systems. And forget about any kind of real live software support on the Cobra website; it just doesn't exist at all.
So now that the little reciever is updated, I installed this in the car. Cobra needs to take a lesson from Garmin, or the GPS industry, about car mounts for devices. They shipped the cheapest piece of garbage to hang this on your windshield. The metal is nothing to bend. The suction cups are exactly that, suction cups that are very hard to push on or remove. So, bottom line this thing looks like garbage hanging from the windshield.
The power cord is way too short. I had to stretch is a long ways to work in my Buick Rendezvous (I know a radar magnet) - if those suction cups ever let go, this unit is flying to the back of the bus quickly. The Mercedes was a little better.
There's one other critical design flaw. The socket for the GPS receiver is a standard mini-USB connector; cheap and not exactly super secure. Definately not an automotive type connection. The power socket is right beside that GPS socket. The GPS almost covers up the power socket, and when you stretch the power cord, it stresses the GPS connection. First time around, the GPS wasn't seated right because the power cord pulled it out.
Now the good stuff. Power this up, and you are greeted by one of the nicest female voices I've heard on an electronic device in a long time. And then you get to look at the display. Well Cobra could have spent maybe five more dollars on this display. It is super low res, the icons are really goofy looking and super clunky. For some unknown reason, they love how much electricity the unit is getting, there's this huge battery in the default display that tells you 14.7V, or whatever is going in. I would haver rather seen the speed displayed.
Customization through the menus is not super intuitive, there's only 4 buttons to work with. They don't always do exactly what I thought they should, a minor annoyance.
Now on to the testing. About 1/4 mile from a camera monitored intersection, the displayed turned to a camera with a green donut, and the Cobra lady said Photo Alert. A bit closer, and an arrow appeared at the top. Closer and the donut got larger and yellow. Closer still, the donut turned red, by that time I was pretty much at the edge of the intersection. This was pretty cool. Worked every single time.
I found a policeman staked out on a road, doubled back and got the Ka alert mentioned at the top of the review. Given the two level signal strength, it wasn't a false alarm. And the fact that he pulled somebody over, well it was real.
The Caution zones is kind of interesting. It's apparently areas where a lot of accidents have been reported. Sure enough, Caution came on with an exclamation point in the middle of the donut, and Cobra lady told me Caution Alert. The color change was exactly like the Camera alert. The two that came up were in front of a school at a very busy intersection. And the second was in front of a hospital.
False alarms. It did a pretty darn good job rejecting them. O'Hare airport is notorious for heavy duty false alarms everywhere. I got X and Kz alarms, but all were only one ball signal strength. The other great thing this unit does, once the alarm is set, you get the voice plus a tone. Then you get tone. And if the signal doesn't get stronger, the tone gets quieter; but the X or Ka radar gun icon stays lit up. It's a really great way to work.
Multiple alarms - got a caution and an X band alarm at once. The Caution stayed huge and the X band radar showed up on the screen. So both were there to see.
Highway driving. Well this is a bit strange and will take some getting used to. Those Caution and Photo alarms are all based on GPS coordinates data. When you travel along a highway, sometimes you will pass near one of those areas. Well you have to look closely at the icon for the direction the arrow is pointing. If it's...Read more›

Cobra iRadar iRAD-100 Radar Detector for iPhone and iPod Touch Review

Cobra iRadar iRAD-100 Radar Detector for iPhone and iPod Touch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Good:
- Brilliant concept by using the iPhone as a display unit
- Excellent display: speedometer, car voltage, compass.
- Easy to read while driving (I mounted it below my factory GPS unit)
- Easy installation of iRadar app
- Locations of Photo Radar
- Power adapter with iPhone power USB plug in
The Bad:
- Too many false alarms, X & K bands
- Ka alert did not beep until cop was in sight, about 50 yards
- Lack of sunvisor clip
- Black mirror finish scratces very easilyThe Ugly:
- Display often resets to iPhone home screen, between 20 minutes to an hour
- Have to reset functions to your liking after display resets to iPhone home screen; city/highway mode, turn on/off multiple bands, auto mute etc.
- Power cord is too short for a cleaner installation.
I have tested the iRadar for 2 road trips in the last 10 days (LA to San Diego and LA to Las Vegas) and both were quite frustrating experiences. Cobra hits home with the concept but needs many tweeking on the unit. Did they even have engineers used them for a few weeks before retailing them? I would check back with Cobra after 2 years, and perhaps most glitches will be gone by then
Save your time and money, buy a higher end radar detector to save you from speeding tickets. This unit looks cool and that's about it.

Radar Detector Car Dash and Windshield Mount Review

Radar Detector Car Dash and Windshield Mount
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In California, it is illegal to have anything mounted to your windshield. GPS, Radar Detectors, etc. If an Officer feels inclined to, he can actually pull you over and ticket you for a windshield mounted device.
I have an Escort Passport 9500ix. I was using the windshield mount it came with. However, I noticed that it was rubbing up against my windshield when I drove and (I'm sure) in part to the dual 12's in the back. It was evident that continual use of the supplied windshield mount would eventually lead to a damaged windshield.
This dash mount is working great. It holds my radar detector perfectly still away from the windshield, while obeying one of CA's many ridiculous laws. Plus, it elevates the radar detector to the perfect spot in order to detect laser without jeopardizing radar detection.

Whistler XTR-695 Radar/Laser Detector with Real Voice Alerts and External Audio Jack Review

Whistler XTR-695 Radar/Laser Detector with Real Voice Alerts and External Audio Jack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Note - see edit at end for added comments.
I bought this detector recently and just completed a 600 mile round trip to Florida. The detector performed very well, and I'm really satisfied with both the performance and value.
K-Band Performance. Very Good - On one stretch of flat road the XTR-695 alarm went off approx. 1.3 miles in advance (with traffic in front of me). Even on rolling terrain with a patrol car located at the bottom of the dip in the road, it alerted approx. a 1/2 mile away, plenty of time to slow down. Very solid performance on K-Band.
KA-Band Performance. Very Good to Excellent - It picked up an oncoming patrol car approx. a mile away with the patrolman toggling the radar on and off as he encountered traffic. Another time a patrol car was parked at the end of very long sweeping curve on an interstate, shooting across the road at about a 45 degree angle. A very difficult test, but the 695 gave about a 15 second advance warning, which was more than enough time to slow down.
Navigating The Menu - Yes, even radar detectors now have menu options, but this one is very simple to navigate. Just press the Menu button, then keep pressing it until the option you're seeking appears on the screen. You can turn off, or on, just about every feature the detector has.
X-Band - I turned this off in the menu. It's used very little in 48 states (New Jersey & Ohio being the exceptions) and turning it off cut the number of false alarms way down (all those X-band automatic door openers in strip malls are now ignored).
POP Detection - Detecting radar guns in POP mode (the few radar guns that have a POP mode that is) requires a detector to spend a lot of time searching for the very weak POP signals, usually lessening response time and increasing false alerts. I turned POP mode off. POP readings can't be used in court, they just let the police get a peek at vehicle's speed without sending out a stronger signal. I figure you'll get hit a couple of seconds later with the real radar blast if you're speeding, probably too quickly to slow down anyway, so POP detection didn't seem worth it. I had gotten a few false KA band alerts, apparently bleed over coming from other detectors, and turning off POP seems to have prevented those types of false alerts almost entirely.
Voice Alert - Great feature. This is one of those things that turns out to be much more useful than you would think. You hear a quick beep/buzz to get your attention, and then a very loud clear voice announces the particular threat (i.e. "K Band"!). You know exactly what you're dealing with without ever having to look at the detector.
Periscope LED Alert - Another feature that turns out to be of more use than anticipated (the "periscope" terminology is Whistler's btw). Two bright blue LEDs, that are raised above the top surface of the detector, flash whenever radar is detected. Even with the music cranked, the LEDs should attract your attention.
Audio Alert - The different radar bands (and laser) have their own distinct alert (buzz/beep, whatever you want to call them). According to various detector experts, the speaker in the XTR695 is one of the largest in the business. All I know is that it's capable of being very loud, depending on how you set the volume control.
Display - This is the one area I'd say Whistler has room for improvement. The main display is dim, but it's not unreadable, at least not in my vehicle. Whether or not this is going to be a major issue probably depends on the individual and the particular vehicle (or the ambient lighting in that vehicle). For me, with the voice alerts telling me which band the radar is on (or announcing a laser hit), the loud audio alerts and the flashing blue 'periscope' LEDs, the display just isn't that important.
A note on detection distances mentioned above. I run the XTR695 in Highway Mode. I do not use any additional filter modes (Filter1 or Filter2). The 695 uses a basic filter mode from the factory, and that is the only filtering that was being done. The encounters were all with traffic in front of me, which makes a big difference in the real world. If you have the bucks, some of the more expensive detectors will pick up radar farther away than the 695, but some will not. Do your research before investing a lot of money in a detector. While this detector doesn't qualify as the very best out there, it has done very well in most of the tests I've come across.
In summary, a very good detector, and well worth the money.
Edit 12/18/08: I still like this detector very much. I wanted to add however, that the main reason I chose the XTR695 over the Whistler Pro 78 was due to the RSID feature available with the XTR695. After living with RSID for awhile, it hasn't proven as useful as I thought it would (it's not a scam by any means, and works perfectly well). If you want the top-of-the-line from Whistler, by all means get the XTR695. However, if price is a concern, then the Whistler 78 should provide similar performance at a lesser price (and with the nice blue LED display to boot). Again, I'm very satisfied with the XTR695, but wanted to pass on my experience in case anyone is trying to decide between the 695 vs the 78.

Whistler's XTR-695 is a detector that maximizes sensitivity and minimizes falsing. Ka Max Mode gives you improved Ka Band sensitivity. Radar Signature ID displays known Ka gun frequencies to help distinguish threats, and Laser Signature ID does the same by displaying pulses per second of received laser signals. Take advantage of 360-degree coverage for all radar and laser bands, Whistler's patented POP-mode detection, and a wealth of bonus features like a 72-point digital compass and vehicle battery voltmeter.

7 Color Backlit LCD Text Display The XTR-695's brilliant text display provides distinct visual confirmation of signals detected, signal strength, and indicates engaged modes of operation. You can choose from 7 different display colors for a bit of personalization, even assigning a different color for each band, or scrolling colors.

Filter Mode There are times when a radar detector can emit the same frequency as police radar and can cause your detector to falsely alarm. Sometimes a detector can display a signal when picking up another radar detector in vehicle close by. The Whistler Filter Mode checks the signal to verify if it's a legitimate police radar or a false alert from another detector.

Auto Dim Mode The Auto Dim feature automatically switches the illumination of the text display between the bright and dim settings according to varying light conditions so that the text display will always be easy to read.

INTELLICORD Ready Add the Whistler INTELLICORD and you'll be able to remotely control the radar detector in settings such as power on/off, city modes, dim/dark and quiet/auto quiet with a simple press of a button.

Real Voice Alerts Real Voice provides added information to the detected signal over and above the simple band ID tones. The unit says "X band" when it detects an X band signal. This allows you to keep your eyes on-the-road. Real Voice is also used to articulate Safety Warning System messages and feature selections. Real Voice will be used to articulate the following:

Band Identification
Safety Warning System messages
Feature Selection

Whistler XTR-140 Laser/Radar Detector with Exclusive Twin Alert Periscopes Review

Whistler XTR-140 Laser/Radar Detector with Exclusive Twin Alert Periscopes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was extremely skeptical about the performance of a $40 detector, but after a few recent road trips, I am convinced this is actually a well functioning product. Although it does not have exceptional filtering ability for false signals, it can still give you enough X/K/Ka warning for you to slow down in time.
The two blue LED's are a great innovation, because you can easily see them out of the corner of your eye. This is extremely useful when your radio drowns out the audible signals, or when the sun washes out the primary letter warning lights.
You simply can't go wrong with the price. It does not have the features of the top of the line detectors (coiled power cord, voice alert, text readout, settings save, compass, etc), yet it has at its core the most important feature: the basic detection ability to provide enough warning for the driver.

The timer is reset if the detector is turned off or unplugged, or any button is pressed before the six hours have expired. The detector will alert you with an audible and visual warning before it shuts off.

Patented VG-2 Cloaking Technology The VG-2, also known as a "radar detector detector," is a special receiver used by police to detect signals radiated by a radar detector. The XTR-330 alerts you its presence, and thanks to Whistler's patented VG-2 cloaking technology, it also provides undetectability.
