Cobra XRS 9340 High Performance 12 Band Radar/Laser Detector Review

(More customer reviews)Having shopped for a detector for a while, I finally settled on this one. I have had it for a few months, I live in New York and waited until I got back from a road trip to Florida to review this detector...
On the road trip, it picked up every cop that was staked out. Every single one. I had zero tickets. In Maryland, the troopers were using laser. I was going through at 2AM, doing about 85...The detector let me know about 7 seperate laser attempts. Every time, I slowed down right away and was fine. There were some times when I couldn't even see the officer responsible!
In other states, the radar KA band let me know about all of the troopers around well in advance. I did turn it off for DC and VA in accordance with their laws. The strobe and safety alerts worked well in Florida, when there was an accident, and later when an ambulance was behind me and needed to get through. VG-2 alerts also work well, as I was radar detector detected several times throughout the trip.
I know that most detectors are terrible for laser protection, but this one seems superior to others. Granted, the officer usually has your speed recorded by the time the laser detector goes off, but the detector seemed to work time and again for laser for me! The range of radar detection, especially for KA band, is pretty far. In a straight stretch I have picked up signals from almost half a mile back!
The only potentially annoying thing about this detector is the X band detection, which goes off any time I am around a building security system (banks, car dealerships, etc) or automatic doors at like a supermarket or CVS or something. This can be turned off, however!!
ONE IMPORTANT NOTE: A radar detector is only as good as how you have it mounted!! My friend has the same detector and he absolutely hates it, says it never picks anything up. I saw how it was mounted, he has it on the dash, below the wipers...a radar detector is a line-of-sight device, people! It has to be able to see all around your vehicle in order for it to be of any use to you! So long as you have it mounted sell, clear of obstructions, I don't think you can get any better protection!

I do find the weather channel to be useful as I commute across the country. The ergonomic mike is a pleasure to use, I expect to see copycats on the market soon. It does it's job and everything I expected it to do! I traveled out of state during the holidays (holidays=many cops) and it saved my butt 3 times on the way there, and 2 times on the way back. It already has paid for itself and then some! Not to mention the two times it saved me this morning on my way to work! The only thing I was worried about when purchasing a detector was, would it give me enough time to slow down, the answer is YES. By the time I brake to the desired speed limit, I look around for a few seconds, then when I think it is a false alarm, there's the cop. Overall, great purchase and worth every cent!

(More customer reviews)The Cobra 75 WX ST Weatherband CB provides an incredible amount of functionality in a very small package. Installation is fast and easy - with a couple tools, your antenna mounted, and little skill, you can have this radio up and running in an hour or two.
CB radios are limited to low-power broadcasting at 4 watts or less. This radio provides maximum power allowed by law and is capable of some pretty incredible range under the right conditions. With a properly tuned, high-quality antenna, I have had coversations with others using the same radio up to 9 miles away. Under normal circumstances, 1-2 miles is more realistic.
As for features, this one has several:
- Scan (all 40 channels in sequence)
- Dual Scan (two channels of your choice)
- Memory
- Lock (so the hand controls don't get reset by accident)
- Weatherband (10 NOAA frequencies)
- Last 3 channels
- SoundTracker (like Dolby noise reduction)
I use mine in a 1999 Jeep Wrangler where there is little extra space for another device. It fits perfectly on my console with the small box hidden away inside.
I can listen to truckers while I am on the highway, talk to my friends when we go off-highway, or scan the channels for both when driving to and from the trails. In the two years I have used mine, it has never given me any problems. It is very sturdy and should stand up to hard use.
I purchased the optional external speaker so that it would be easier to hear but many people find the unit works well right out of the box!
There might be bigger, badder CB's out there, but this one is a peach!

(More customer reviews)First unit shipped to me received fine but the transmit audio was terrible. Even with the Dynamike turned up all the way people could barely hear me. Had to literally shout to be heard at all.
To Amazon's credit they sent me a replacement unit 2nd day air. Amazon has been great to deal with, as always.
This second radio seems to transmit fine so far. However, the speaker of this radio emits a constant, low volume, high pitched whine when receiving. The first radio did not have this "feature".
The good news is all of the controls and features seem to work correctly and the noise blanker and automatic noise limiter do a terrific job stopping car ignition noises. I figure I will keep this radio and live with the whine and hope no other problems crop up. If they do I will change my rating.

(More customer reviews)I recently bought one of these radios for my semi tractor. I immediately fell in love with the backlit controls. Years ago, I owned the Cobra version of this radio, but I didn't like it as much as this one. The controls are laid out very logically and have a nice feel. The Delta tune has a center detent for "eyes free" operation as you drive. The weather channels are a welcome addition to a long drive, keeping you informed of changing and/or severe weather ahead. The only things I didn't care that much for are the Dynamic Squelch feature and the front mic connector. DSC doesn't seem to work too well, but I drive with the squelch off (to hear distant signals), so this doesn't detract from an otherwise great radio. Having owned various Cobras, Galaxies, and other "big" radios, I can honestly say I like the Uniden PC78LTW the best.

Cobra ESD7100 9 Band Radar/Laser Detector Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased two of these inexpensive radar detectors for my wife and kid's cars, mostly to keep them from getting tagged on a photo radar ticket for $80. The Cobra works pretty well with a couple of glaring problems. Mainly, the L or Laser alert falses all of the time and, seemingly, for no reason. The alarm will sound in strange places like parking lots, side streets, and alleys. I'm pretty sure there's no Laser-sighted radar being used in my alley. Each of the bands has a different sounding alarm, which is good, except they all sound like a something from a 1980's arcade game. I've compared the performance of the Cobra to my Escort Solo and the Cobra is definitely less sensitive. My Escort picked up a photo radar van from more than a half a mile away, while the Cobra was nearly in sight of the van. Still, the alarm was early enough to slow down before getting a ticket. Of course, the best thing about the Cobra is the price. It's an amazing value for a relatively sophisticated detector. If all you're looking for is a little extra help spotting the occassional speed trap, then the Cobra will get the job done, as long as you're aware of the limitations. Serious speeding should be left to the pricier Escorts, Valentines, and Beltronics.

The radio has preformed excellent,and is small enough to put in any car or truck. I had only two problems with this radio, First the scan feature only works when the squelch is turned up high enough to elliminate "fuzz" which dosent allw you to pick up and scan weak signals, Second this radio dose not have a SWR meter(Standing Wave Ratio) which means to have your antenna tuned yu have to buy a SWR meter or take it to a CB shop which can be a hassle. Other than that this radio is perfect and dose a fine job.

Uniden PRO510XL 40-Channel CB Radio Review

(More customer reviews)I am partial to Uniden anyway, however this CB is great for a first time user or as a back up to a more expensive unit. I have been using CB for about 10 years and I always make sure I have a Uniden 510 available for a back up, or use it in a second car. It has superior range when used with a good antenna and the received audio is decent. I would suggest using an external speaker unless you have a super quiet vehicle. The anl switch cuts through static really well to improve reception, although it sometimes dulls out the audio of the person you are trying to hear. You can use it with a cigarette lighter plug with an adapter from radio shack for a few dollars. They will even show you how to hook it up. It all boils down to being a great CB at a great price. Remember a simple rule of thumb... An inexpensive CB on a good antenna will perform just as well as a high-end CB on a cheap antenna. Don't forget to tune your antenna and have fun!
