This product did allow me to scan the family slides, but it did not live up to its description. First of all, the software did not work with Vista, even though it was supposed to work with up through Windows 7. It loaded OK, but then "could not find the scanner." There was no way to get manufacturer help: no links, no printed web address, and not even a telephone number. Finally I loaded the software into an older computer running on Windows XP. It worked, but it was touchy. Sometimes the screen would flicker or freeze entirely. It seemed to be helped by adjusting the display settings on my computer.
After scanning about four carousels of slides (several hundred), the rear flap of the scanner snapped leaving a dangling part inside the unit. I then had to watch very carefully to avoid catching the slide tray so that the tray would not become lodged partway in. At some point the flap came completely off.
Fortunately I had access to an XP computer, and the broken flap did not prevent me from finishing my project. I was not able to manipulate the photos as I had hoped, but at least my family memories are now digitized. If you have a computer running XP and your project is relatively small, the SVP-1200 might work out OK. Otherwise, you should probably consider something more user friendly and more durable.

I have all these old slides and negatives that I've been meaning to convert for several years now. I finally caved and bought this scanner so I could at least get them on my computer.
It does an okay job. It is not archival quality. It scans quickly and easily, you can adjust the exposure and a few other things in the unit.
I never intended to print anything out, and it's fine for just converting the memories to digital. It's a little fiddly to use - the slide carrier only takes 3 slides at a time and I find it a little difficult to fit them snugly into the carrier. I haven't used the negative carrier yet, but it looks like it takes a full strip of negs.
I thought I would be able to plug it into my mac and upload the scans as they were scanned, but no. I have to plug the scanner into the wall socket, scan the images to an SD card then transfer them.
It seems a little temperamental too - sometimes it won't turn on so I'll unplug it from the wall once or twice, close the lid and open it and eventually it will switch on.
All in all, does an okay job. A little fiddly. Probably a bit too pricey for what it is. I would not buy it again, that's for sure.

With the sd card slot, there is no need to connect this scanner to a computer and therefor I didn't have to deal with any included software. Just left the cd in the box. I used this scanner without a computer to scan my slides. I used aaa batteries for portability, and I also used the included power cord when I was near an oulet to save on money buying batteries. The quality of the scanner is great! The scan of a slide is so fast that at first I didn't even know it scanned. You literally push a button and it's done that second. There is no noise. Once I was done scanning all of my slides, I simply took the sd card out of the scanner and into a card reader to my computer. The files were all in standard jpeg format where any program on your computer could read the files.

Wow, I am totally impressed with this product. Not only was it simple to setup and use but it integrated to my MAC without a flaw. The quality of the images are amazing (providing that the slides are good). I have scanned photos in the past but find digitally converting the slides to be much better quality. NOTE: remember to blow off the dust on the slides before you scan them. The system comes with 2 trays each for slides or negatives. Although that may not seem like a lot (3 slides per tray) it proved to be fine. I also used the SD memory card from my camera so I didn't have to buy another one. I do recommend using a memory card for without it the system can only store about 10 pictures. With the memory card I was able to use the machine and the 1000 slides I have and quickly convert them while I was watching a movie. Later I went back to my desk and connected the scanner to my MAC and downloaded. Easy! If you have old slides I highly recommend doing this. Not only will you get a good laugh at old memories but for me I will be putting together a DVD to give as gifts. I am sure the rest of my family will get a kick out of the old pictures as well.
