Fujitsu ScanSnap S300 Color Mobile Scanner Review

My reasoning: (Vista Ultimate laptop)
1) It intelligently waits until the computer is idle, to auto-perform OCR chores. You have the option to do so as you scan, but this slows down scanning. There's also a menu click which yields a list of scans awaiting OCR-- really nice touch!
2) Unlike proprietary organizers, the "cabinets" created within the organizer software are actual directories on your hard disk. Likewise, folders created within the organizer's cabinets are subdirectories on your disk. So, you get the best of all worlds-- use the organizer knowing you're not locked in, as it's just a slick interface for what is actually existing on your drive. (i.e., Create a cabinet = create a directory)
3) Thermal receipts, even trying-to-fade ones, come thru crisp and clear, miraculously, when scanning.
4) I have Adobe Acrobat Professional 8, which is a necessary evil in my business. I can now avoid that bloated monster altogether when it comes to receipts and anything else I choose to scan using this system. That alone is worth the price of entry!
5) The duplex scanning is wondrous-- paper goes thru only once, with both sides captured simultaneously -- speedily. This still blows my mind (I have a duplex Canon MP830 multifunction-- for all practical purposes, its scanner has been blown away by this device.)
6) Let's face it-- sometimes, paper jams. This is the FIRST machine encountered-- since the late 80's when I started computing-- which makes it so easy to fix things. You just push the little square silver arrow atop the scanner, open, get the paper, and close it. Incredibly easy and no-fuss! And yes, the wrinkled paper then flows thru fine (I gently kept a finger on that one item as it scanned thru, just to be safe.) BTW, I had scanned upwards of 300 items before a jam occurred.
7) Lots of options, re speed, resolution, etc. All easy to get to, all quick to implement. These folks actually used this thing during the creation process, as it seems they didn't miss a trick in making this a genuinely consumer friendly device!
8) The consumables are comparatively cheap. The pad assembly (Part # PA03541-0002) needs replacement every 10,000 sheets or a year-- google the actual part # to see the $8 retailers); the pick roller (Part # PA03541-0001) lasts about 100,000 sheets-- about $12. I noticed a huge price variation among retailers while googling, so I placed my order today; they're not in stock at most places, but I have plenty of time so who cares. This is bound to be a profoundly popular scanner per word-of-mouth, and consumable prices may increase accordingly. BTW, right-click the ScanSnap Manager tray icon for "check consumable supplies" to get a tally on current sheet usage, which you can reset during the replacement process.
9) Small footprint-- lives in a bookcase shelf atop my desk.
10) One of the rare occasions where I've had absolutely no post-purchase regrets with an electronic item!
Long and short of it is this: I've finally lived long enough to see one hardware manufacturer get everything right. There's a pdf manual, but I read it only to investigate consumables (thought it would be a "gotcha!" but was pleasantly suprised at the reasonable cost). I assume you're reading these reviews carefully (as I did), trying to decide between the ScanSnap and a lower priced alternative. For once, I decided not to play cheapskate, and boy oh boy, am I glad!! (The price here has already escalated a bit, so do it now, my friend!)

With the sd card slot, there is no need to connect this scanner to a computer and therefor I didn't have to deal with any included software. Just left the cd in the box. I used this scanner without a computer to scan my slides. I used aaa batteries for portability, and I also used the included power cord when I was near an oulet to save on money buying batteries. The quality of the scanner is great! The scan of a slide is so fast that at first I didn't even know it scanned. You literally push a button and it's done that second. There is no noise. Once I was done scanning all of my slides, I simply took the sd card out of the scanner and into a card reader to my computer. The files were all in standard jpeg format where any program on your computer could read the files.

Pentax DSmobile 600 Scanner Review

Pentax DSmobile 600 Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We use this scanner to digitally file our statements and bills. It scans quickly and quietly, without the need for an adapter and without taking much space on one's desk. It partners well with Adobe Acrobat -- we have Acrobat Professional which allows us to crop document edges if the original is less than 8.5 x 11 -- and I've seen no software compatability issues with Windows XP Home or XP Professional. It also allows you to continuously scan multiple page documents (as opposed to scanning each page as its own PDF file).
The one criticism that I have has to do with the software that accompanies the scanner. It does not apparently remember the last settings (e.g., resolution, color vs B&W, and destination directory) so you have to re-enter all of these each time you sit down to scan.
We haven't tried using it for any graphics purpose, but from what I can tell, it's not likely to perform like a flatbed scanner for this purpose, at least for serious graphics work. For a casual scan of a photo for a document or a webpage, it would probably work just fine.
Absolutely satisfied!

Weighing in at less than 12 ounces and measuring just 11 inches wide, the Pentax DSmobile lets you carry around all you need to scan everything from a business card to an 8.5 by 14 inch document. The scanner draws power from its USB interface so no clunky AC adapter is needed. Bring it along with you and you can instantly transmit a printed page via email, fax, or the web. The scanner has a hardware optical resolution of 300 dpi and the included OCR software automatically converts the document to editable text.
The scanner uses a Contact Image Sensor (CIS) to achieve its smaller volume and lighter weight, and also requires less power consumption and lower maintenance than a traditional CCD. The DSmobile has few moving parts, which promotes high reliability and nearly maintenance-free operation. It consumes only 0.2 watt of power in standby mode and a maximum of 2.2 watts of power when scanning. The Pentax DSmobile 600 Scanner is compatible with Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. It is backed by a 1-year warranty.

Unless you want to waste days trying to get a defective product to work avoid this scanner. I was on the phone with HP's Costa Rican customer support (abuse) department. After 3 days of dialing into my computer their incompetent Costa Rican based support staff informed me that they could not get the software to work. This even involved editing my registry. It was clearly defective which he admitted. He said a case manager would then call me. 7 days and 5 e-mails later a case manager called me to let me know that I could purchase a more expensive scanner for a whopping $50 discount ($100 more than Amazon's price). He then told me that the original tech support person should have let me know they could not do anything for me and that was that senor.
HP's tech support has slowly deteriorated through the years but the outsourced Costa Rican based business division, which covers this scanner is a totally unprofessional operation. Not only is the software defective (version 1) but you cannot communicate with them or get them to understand the meaning of customer service. Even if I wanted to I don't have the time to deal with HP's continuing deterioration of product and software quality. I have owned many HP products in the past and they are more and more problematic. If you want a company to stand behind a product it is not HP. Save your time and money and buy another brand. I have had 2 weeks of my time wasted by HP.
Update.... 3 months later, HP replaced the product with the N6350 after another division intervened. The N6310 started to fail calibration (hardware failure) on startup only 8 weeks after receiving it, keep in mind this is in addition to their software not working. The N6350 arrived with a scratched glass scanbed with specks under it which cannot be removed and cleaned. HP's quality continues to deteriorate and the Costan Rican (HP Business Products) Support Division which oversees all scanners is the worst. I am stuck with the HP product.
A friend recently got an Epson all in one which works beautifully and installed flawlessly. Lexmark/Epson all have better products at this point. Try to avoid HP scanners....unless you want to waste a lot of time dealing with a customer division that does not care about their customers.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner Review

Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have horrible problems with technology. I buy stuff, and after 4 hours of trying to get it to do what I thought it should do, it doesn't. HP does this to me all the time.
That is why I was floored when I got the S510 working in under 20 minutes exactly as I wanted it to.
You can take a bunch of pieces of paper, scan in both sides, capture it to PDF, OCR it, make it search-able, save it to disk... all by pressing one button.
I am using the ScanSnap filing system software that comes with it. It is essentially a glorified file explorer, except that it will do text in PDF searches for you based on the directory (Or Cabinet as they call it).
I set mine to extreme compression, and full resolution, and then the auto OCR. The software warns you that it will slow down scanning, and it does. It maxes out my 2-3 year old Dell D600 with .5G of RAM laptop, but it gets the job done. I can still use the computer so it doesn't block like I have read elsewhere (maybe for the S500).
This is an upgrade to the S500. Mine was black, not sure what's up with the white ones (maybe mac?).
It comes with Adobe Acrobat 8. This allows you to delete pages, rotate them, etc.
The OCR is amazing. Out of the box, it gets a little confused with i1IlL but so do I, bump it up to the max resolution, and the OCR is flawless.
I probably won't bother with the try & buy Rack2 Filer. Google Desktop isn't essential for searching.
In the hundreds of papers that I scanned over the weekend, I may have had 3 jams which are REALLY easy to clear, and the software is pretty smart about it.
If I had a newer / heftier computer, things would go A LOT faster (not the fault of the scanner or the software though, I watched my CPU spike and slow during scanning & OCR)
This literally was one of the only pieces of gear I have taken out of the box, and had 100% functional within the hour.
My .005% gripe; Be able to tell the scanner "Yeah, don't scan the backs of these pages" rather than navigate all through the menus. But disk is cheap, and I can always delete it with Acrobat later.
I'll recommend it to my friends & customers.

Koss Scanner Headphone Red Isolation Review

I purchased these headsets for two reasons..1. first NASCAR race at Bristol 2. to use while cutting the grass. They work great on both. I love that the cord is long. This way I can have my ipod in my pocket and the cord actually reaches when I stand up. Also love the volume on the side!! My father is currently trying them out when he bush hogs the pastures. He said he gets board and he also likes to stand up while on the tractor to give his fanny a rest. That long cord will allow for him to do this. It really reduces the noise. At Bristol, I thought that it wasn't that loud when they cranked the engines on without the headsets but when they stared going around the track it was NON STOP the headset were back on....LOVE THEM, LOVE THEM!!!

I spent three hours with HP technical support trying to make this thing work. The things they had me try were basic, like removing and then reinstalling cables, cycling power, and like. Gee why didn't I think of that?
They blamed everything else but the scanner. When I refused to reinstall the hardware yet again, HPs solution was to request I buy a more expensive HP product.
I remember when HP produced quality products. Not anymore!

Ion Audio USB Picture, Slide, and Film Scanner (PICS2PC) Review

Ion Audio USB Picture, Slide, and Film Scanner (PICS2PC)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tried other slide scanners before purchasing the Ion PICS2PC and returned them all for one reason or another, especially poor software performance. This is the best scanner I have tried and I am keeping it. I already converted 50 slides the first day and the results are satisfactory. I am, however, disappointed in one thing: the slide tray, which accepts 3 slides, has a lock which is hard to open. I feel I am wasting a lot of time trying to open it while loading and unloading the slides. I have thousands of slides to convert and this will cause the longest delay in the process. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium and the software is working very well, the best I have tried. I have not yet used the trays for the slide film or three photo trays. I believe the all have the same locking feature. I may try to purchase an extra slide tray from Ion, depending on the price, and have my wife load and unload slides while I am scanning. This should help speed up the process. Otherwise, Ion did a nice job designing this scanner.

Ion Audio Photo, Slide, and Film Scanner (PICS2SD) Review

Ion Audio Photo, Slide, and Film Scanner (PICS2SD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am using this product to convert my old slides (from travels) to digital images so that I can put them all on DVDs and get rid of my old carousels and slide projector.Ion Audio Photo, Slide, and Film Scanner (PICS2SD). The item comes with terrible directions, so be prepared to have difficulty figuring out how to use it. Then, the process is pretty easy, and fast to scan our slides. The conversion does often result in images with a purple cast. I put them in iphoto to make color corrections the best I can, and my slides don't look too bad! This does add a lot of extra time, though. Also, the machine is supposed to store up to 14 images, but after scanning one image, it said "full" and it wouldn't store any more. I was on the phone with Ion company and they couldn't figure out why I was having this problem, although, I noticed another reviewer had the same problem. I could have returned it, but it works well with my SD card and so I kept it. If you are looking to convert your old slides, so that you can preserve memories, I would consider this machine, knowing it is not a perfect one. It will ultimately do the job for you and it is so much more convenient to pop a CD or DVD into the computer than set up slides. We can now enjoy looking at slides we haven't seen for 20 years!!

CardScan Executive Card Scanner (Mac) Review

CardScan Executive Card Scanner (Mac)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fortunately, I was eligible for a $179 competitive upgrade direct from the manufacturer for an old CardScan Windows brick I found down in my basement in the box of orphaned peripherals. I had loved CardScan back in my Windows days, but had lost hope that they would come out with a Mac version. In the meantime, I had struggled with the kludgey I.R.I.S. business card scanner for mac and its flakey crapware that really didn't integrate with Mac Address Book all that well and had a horrible OCR recognition error rate and field parsing engine and seemed to run like it was written in Javascript.
Well, I'm happy that the Mac version of CardScan works flawlessly for me with a typical Mac setup (an Intel Mac Book Pro running 10.5.5.) and that setup was a snap. With some trepidation, I synched with my Address Book and no precious contact data was lost or damaged. I then scanned some business cards and it parsed the various fields with almost 100% accuracy, including some tricky company names in graphic logos, and put the data in a suggested "inspector" window. One click to verify (or change any fields with a linked zoom to the card pane view) and the new card data is in the CardScan database and then synched with your mac Address Book.
Couldn't be easier! Very satisfied user! While I'm not a frequent Amazon reviewer or any kind of computer expert, I wanted to post a counter review to the two negative reviews recently posted. While individual products and installations can sometimes be flaky and your mileage may vary, I found this CardScan product to be as good as I remember the Windows version being and better, because everything's better on a Mac (including Address Book being better than the fugly Outlook ecosystem).

The easy-to-navigate UI was designed to maximize existing features of your Mac. View larger. Capture Contact Information The CardScan Executive scanner can scan up to 20 business cards a minute in color. Known for fast, accurate performance, the scanner works with native Mac software to help you convert the data on business cards into a digital form that's easy to use.
You can also use the CardScan software to consolidate contact information from electronic sources, including web sites and email signatures. With drag-and-drop performance, the CardScan makes creating a complete contact record as easy as highlighting the contact data you want, dragging it over the list area of the CardScan window, and releasing.
Designed to work with Mac OS 10.5.3+ (Leopard), the new easy-to-use CardScan interface combines Mac-specific design with many of the functions that have made CardScan for Windows an award-winning choice for business professionals. Updated CardScan sofware for Windows is also included in the Executive package, so you can be sure you'll have access to the version that meets your needs.
Manage Contacts With Ease Once your contacts are entered in the CardScan software, you can assign single or multiple customizable categories to each one. This makes it easy to sort contacts, view them in groups, and prepare lists of contacts for email or direct mail. Plus with the easy-to-use Print Wizard, creating custom envelopes, labels, and more is hassle-free. All this means that outreach projects get done faster and are easier to keep track of.
Using the "Batch Scan" feature to scan a whole stack of business cards at once lets you quickly assign several cards the same category or notes, saving you time. And when you can't remember someone's name, but you know what their business card looks like, the image view feature lets you fan through color images of all your scanned business cards.
Stay in Sync on the Move Keep your contact list up-to-date across the applications and mobile devices that you use on a daily basis. Since CardScan can be set up to sync automatically with Mac's Address Book, it's easy to keep the contact lists in your iPhone, iPod, and MobileMe network in synch, too. It's equally easy to export information as vCards (electronic business cards) to other software, including Microsoft Entourage.
All CardScan products offer a risk-free 30-day trial. And all new CardScan Executive systems include software for both Windows and Mac OS.

This scanner is wonderful. The image quality is excellent. I had friends wondering if I should spend so much on a scanner, then when they saw the images of plants I made, they said "How does it make that look so much better than life?"!
Be careful when scanning non-paper items such as plants or ceramics, the glass can be scratched (on this or any scanner). I buy clear acetate or plexiglass to put on top of the glass in such cases.
As a botanical illustrator, I find this scanner to be a great timesaver. I can scan and enlarge the parts of a plant I need to illustrate, seeing detail much better than through a microscope.

This scanner is great for 11x17 scans. I'm a textile designer and need to scan large fabric prints and this scanner, for the price, is awesome!
The functions are easy and scanning time is faster than I thought. I used to have a HP scanner and that took forever...not to mention the warm up time. But, this scanner has a relatively quick warm up and scanning time.
The only reason I gave it a 4 star instead of 5 is because there is a little 1/4" fish bowl effect at the edges of the scans. But, I have to piece together prints anyways, so it's not that big of a deal. For the price, it's still well worth it.

Radio Shack Pro-95 1000 Channel Dual-Trunking Scanner Radio Review

This is a great and very sophisticated scanner. It's capable of doing a lot and is programmable using your computer, a $30 cable and some software from the Internet, but the included manual can be difficult to use. There is an easier-to-read manual that's been put together by a scanner enthusiast and uploaded to the web. Also, be aware that the included list of frequencies is out of date.
Although many police agencies have moved to un-monitorable radio systems due to the prevalence of criminals carrying scanners, there's still a lot of interesting stuff out there that you can listen to!

Imagelab FS9T 9 MP Slide and Negative Scanner with 2.4-Inch Tft LCD Screen Review

Wow, I am totally impressed with this product. Not only was it simple to setup and use but it integrated to my MAC without a flaw. The quality of the images are amazing (providing that the slides are good). I have scanned photos in the past but find digitally converting the slides to be much better quality. NOTE: remember to blow off the dust on the slides before you scan them. The system comes with 2 trays each for slides or negatives. Although that may not seem like a lot (3 slides per tray) it proved to be fine. I also used the SD memory card from my camera so I didn't have to buy another one. I do recommend using a memory card for without it the system can only store about 10 pictures. With the memory card I was able to use the machine and the 1000 slides I have and quickly convert them while I was watching a movie. Later I went back to my desk and connected the scanner to my MAC and downloaded. Easy! If you have old slides I highly recommend doing this. Not only will you get a good laugh at old memories but for me I will be putting together a DVD to give as gifts. I am sure the rest of my family will get a kick out of the old pictures as well.

CardScan Personal v8 Card Scanner Review

CardScan Personal v8 Card Scanner

This product definitely saves time, but it's NOT 100% accurate. Company and people's names aren't always scanned properly, nor are they put in the correct category (company name, mobile, etc.)
Admittedly, many fonts and logos on business cards make the company name hard to decipher (even for me!) so I can't totally blame this on the scanner. Considering how many diverse types of business cards exist in this world, it does a pretty good job.
The good news is that this product seems to understand NUMBERS very well, and I generally find numbers the most challenging characters to enter since I actually need to pay close attention (and therefore take more time).
Another aspect I like about this scanner is that it's highly portable. It small in size, includes a USB cable (which powers the device), and comes with a carrying case that accommodates both the scanner and cable. Definitely a nice feature to have.
So far I'm pleased with this item. I scanned, organized and "verified" 40 business cards in about 20 minutes, which I think is decent time. Typing them into Outlook would've taken me about 2 hours, or 3 hours factoring in "distractions."
Overall, I feel this is a good business tool to have, and Amazon's low price makes it a good value overall.
