Samsung CLP-300N Network-ready Color Laser Printer Review

Samsung CLP-300N Network-ready Color Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used this printer for about a month. In general, it prints text well, albeit a bit oversaturated. OTOH, the rated speed output for monochrome prints is actually close to accurate.
For color prints, my use has primarily been for color charts, graphs and the like, and for this purpose, it works admirably well (use decent quality laser paper for best results). It is fast, and for both monochrome and color printing, it is very quiet, with rapid startup (no long waiting before the first page is printed).
I would not use this printer for photos, but that's obvious. Inkjet and dye-sub printers do a far better job at printing photos, although the costs of consumables are much higher as well. Comparison with my Konica-Minolta 2450 (which is also network ready shows slight banding and generally less than optimal photo quality. However, for general office use, claimed comsumable cost is considerably lower than for even the most basic inkjets.
The software supplied with the CLP-300N (the N means it has an ethernet network card installed) works as advertised, and installing it on both Windows 2003 and XP is straighforward. The bundled software (30 day trial) is worth what you pay for it, which is to say, very little. However, as noted above, printing photos is not this printer's forte.
All in all, the small size, quiet operation, quick startup and good monochrome printing with the opetion to add a dash of color makes this a good workgroup printer for SOHO use. The reliability of the printer remains unknown, as I've only printed about 5000 pages sso far. Similarly, the quoted capacity of the toner bottles may be overoptimistic, but it's too early to tell.
Compared to the behemoths sold by HP and others, this printer does not overwhem a small sized office or open space, and I recommend it with only a few small reservations. As a value/money proposition, it's a good deal.

Brother HL-5280DW Wireless Laser Printer Network Duplex Review

Brother HL-5280DW Wireless Laser Printer Network Duplex
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned the printer for about two months now and I am satisfied with the purchase. It is hard to find another printer in this price range (I paid $315 at Amazon) with similar feature set. I use it on my wireless LAN at home with both PCs and my MacBook Pro, and have not had any major trouble so far. I did not dare to setup the security features, so I can't relate to the other reviewer who had problems with enabling them on the printer. I rely on MAC address filtering on my access point for the time being.
Now, there are 3 aspects of the printer I did not like a whole lot :
1. Fan noise.
2. Clicking sound during warm-up.
3. Surge of current generated by the printer upon startup.
I emailed the tech support, and received an answer promptly, to my satisfaction, so I decided to keep it.
Overall I rate it with 5 stars based on the price/performance.
The answers from tech support are below for your reading pleasure.
The fan will run until the fuser is below 100 degrees Celsius. Make sure that the printer has adequate space on each side for proper ventilation,at least 3 to 4 inches around all sides. The HL-5200 Series machines may make a clicking, ticking or popping noise when the machine is warming up, in standby mode or cooling down after making copies. This noise occurs when parts within the fuser
Unit (part of the machine that adheres the toner to the page) expand and contract as part of the normal heating up and colling down process.
PLEASE NOTE: This noise ONLY occurs when the machine is warming up, is in standby mode or when cooling down AFTER printing a document. This is normal operation and not an indication of a malfunction of the machine. If the noise is accompanied by a machine malfunction (for example: a paper jam, machine error, loud grinding when making prints etc), please contact the Brother Customer Service department at 1-800-276-7746.
Lights flickering or dimming when using the printer can be explained by the following information. The average operating current for the printer, as determined by Underwriters Laboratory (UL) testing is 5. amps. However, when the fuser is cold or when the printer is warming up,it will jump to 7.5 amps. This is a design element to enable the printer to get ready for a quick time to first print. The power spikes up to ready the printer quickly. Sometimes the spikes will cause lights to flicker as the power is drawn.
The printer has been tested and approved by UL. The printer will not damage home wiring. UL has confirmed that the home circuit breaker would trip before any damage would occur. This design element ensures the printer performs 30 pages per minute printing and fast wake up time. This design cannot be altered and is not an indication of a manufacturing defect. We do recommend not to share the same power circuit with other high-power appliances, particularly an air conditioner, copier, shredder and so on.

Canon MF6550 Duplex Copier Laser Printer Review

Canon MF6550 Duplex Copier Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Start up:
The Canon MF6550 is more than adequately packaged and protected to survive shipping without incident. It comes with a "starter" cartridge, only good for 1,000 pages or so. Search for "canon 106 cartridge" via Google for the full cartridge, good for printing 5,000 pages [with 5% coverage]. This machine uses a single cartridge system; some models need two [different] cartridges, which is more expensive to operate.
After installing the toner cartridge and putting paper in the tray, I plugged it into a 110v outlet, connected it via a USB 2.0 cable to the PC, plugged-in the provided RJ11 phone cable (for faxing) to a wall-jack. I then turned the device and the PC on; the PC immediately recognized the MF6550 as new hardware and requested insertion of the installation CD [supplied by Canon]. After inserting the CD, it took about 10 minutes to go through this process, and everything worked as it should. The machine was ready for printing immediately, and there were no glitches during software installation. I later noticed that the manual said to not connect the USB cable until the software was installed, but not doing that didn't seem to hurt anything. I don't read documentation unless I'm stumped. My PC is a fairly new, high-end Dell, running XP Service Pack II.
The installation process asks whether the MF6550 is connected to a PC or if it's a network printer. I chose the former. We have two PC's in our home office. The other PC has an HP LaserJet directly cabled to it. Using standard XP networking, each printer works from either PC, as long as that PC is turned on. The PCs connect through a Linksys WRT54GS router using RJ45 network patch cables.
No USB interface cable is provided, so you'll need to get that separately.
A major reason to buy such a machine, assuming you need the functions it provides, is to reduce the amount of table space otherwise required with individual machines. Of course, if you need these functions, a comparable scanner, copier, fax, and printer would also cost far more. Canon's sales pitch of this being a suitable machine for a small business implies that it will last many years in a home-office setting. The 3-year warranty, with one year on site, is evidence that Canon has confidence in their product operating in a SOHO (small office/home office) setting.
Copying:
This machine does all the obvious things, and does them well; e.g., reduce to 50%, enlarge to 200%, copy up to 99 copies per original, feed stock from the secondary supply tray, etc.. You can use the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) as in any capable office copier, or open the platen glass cover and set your document on the platen. You can adjust resolution (dots per inch) and/or density, collate the output, automatically print two-sided documents from one or two sided originals, copy two pages to each page (automatically reduces two documents to fit on the selected paper size). It has a "frame erase" feature to eliminate shadows and lines that appear when copying various types of documents. The automatic duplex printing is impressive to watch - it prints on one side and ejects most of the page into the tray; then pulls it back into the machine and prints the other side. A marvel of engineering, and another labor saver when compared to manual two-sided printing. This machine replaces our now-dead $800 Xerox home copier that only did the basic copy functions.
Scanning:
One reason we bought this machine was to scan old printed music, which is sometimes larger than letter-sized material. Most consumer copier/scanners on the market can't handle legal-sized paper. I did a test scan of a newspaper page using the full platen option - this showed the maximum area this machine scans is 8 3/8" by 13 7/8". The actual platen glass is 10 1/4" by 15 1/4". A legal-sized scan takes 30 seconds, not counting setting parameter choices and dealing with the results. There are scanners on the market with even larger platens, but they cost far more than this model, and are aimed at businesses.
Anyone used to a low-cost flat bed scanner will be thrilled to have a scanner with Automatic Document Feed (ADF). Put a 50 page document in the hopper, press a few buttons, and the machine creates a 50-page file (PDF) or 50 files (BMP, JPEG, or TIFF). Walk away and do something else while it's scanning, if you need to. A huge labor and time saver compared to page-at-a-time-scanners, but of course, this feature is only useful if the scanning job lends itself to auto feed. When ADF-scanning with the resolution set to 50 to 300 dpi, the MF6550 whizzes along at 1 page every 5.5 seconds. Setting the resolution to 400 or 600 slows scanning to 1 page every 24 seconds. It ADF-scans at the same speed regardless of the type of file(s) you told it to create. The machine can be used a printer during the scan process.
OCR:
As a test, I put the Canon Limited Warranty page on the platen and selected the OCR function. The Warranty is a full page of small light-print legalese.
After scanning, an error message appeared: "OmniPage SE Failed to update the system registry. Please try using REGEDIT." Perhaps it won't happen on your PC, but on mine, this error message popped up after every OCR file was created. Here's how to eliminate this annoying message:
- click START, select RUN, enter "regedit" and click OK
- navigate to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Omnipage.Document"
- right click on that, and select Permissions
- select your userid from the first table
- select"Allow - Full Control"
- select Apply, then OK
The software correctly converted all 1,362 words from that Canon document, with the same font/font size/capitalization/format as the original. Some words didn't pass OmniPage's spell checker, but the software still interpreted every letter correctly. The output file is saved with a suffix of .rtf. Double click that file and it opens in Microsoft Word and looks as though you've typed the document. You can then modify the text, copy it, etc. Pretty amazing. To upgrade from the included basic SE version to the full version, called OmniPage 15, will cost extra. The full version has more functionality; e.g., to also OCR directly from PDF format.
Software:
The principle software included with this machine is MF Toolbox version 4.9. It's a later version of the Canon ScanGear Toolbox software that came with earlier Canon flatbed scanners such as the N1220U. A shortcoming of the new software, versus ScanGear, is that Canon removed the perfectly logical [optional] feature to automatically forward a scanned file to a program (e.g., Adobe Photoshop) for viewing. This later software version requires a click of the "forward" button for each scan, which is a labor waster. The output file isn't even created until the forward button is clicked, so this is a required step.
When scanning in black & white, MF Toolbox's "threshold" defaults to 72 (out of 0 to 255), instead of, in my opinion, the more logical midpoint of 128 used in ScanGear. The result is that, if you leave it at 72, some scans are so faint, you have to re-do them. By adjusting threshold, you can sharpen and darken characters in a text document and reduce back-printing such as in newspapers. That is, if the original results in a too-faint copy, bump up the threshold setting - if it's too dark, lower the threshold setting. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to make YOUR choice of threshold the new default, which means setting threshold every time you scan something. This doesn't take much time if using the ADF with many pages to scan (unless you have to re-scan the whole thing because Threshold was set too low). However, when scanning pages by carefully setting each one the platen, resetting threshold for each page is a royal pain in the keister. This is particularly inexplicable, since Canon's years-old ScanGear (e.g., version 2.2) scanning software didn't have this problem.
Here's [an undocumented] way to have the threshold window appear each time, so at least you're reminded to set it: click PDF, Scan-1, or Scan-2; select "Display the Scanner Driver"; click START, double click the 1/2 shaded box below "image settings" (which brings up a mini-window for Threshold); and drag that mini-window into the image settings area. It's that drag step that the documentation fails to mention.
Fax:
Our family had no immediate need for a fax, so we haven't studied that function. Based on the Basic Guide's 39 pages on Fax features however, I might need a training course. I do know that simply plugging your land-line phone in the phone jack of the MF6550 doesn't work. First time our phone rang, we couldn't talk to the caller. I unplugged the RJ11C plug and will get to this some other time. This is unlikely a fault of the MF6550, since I had made no settings as to how/when it was to receive fax calls.
The Canon MF6530 is the same machine, minus the fax function.
Multi-processing:
As mentioned earlier, you can be scanning concurrently while printing, a great labor and time saver. You can also copy or scan while receiving faxes.
Duplex Printing:
To duplex print a document from your PC, do a Ctrl/P, click on properties, click on "finishing", under print style, select 2-sided printing, click OK, click on print (or OK, depending on which program you're printing from). The MF6550 will automatically print every other page on the reverse side. This not only saves 50% on paper, it's like having your own printing press!
Documentation:
For the most part, the documentation is...Read more›

Samsung CLP 300 Mini Personal Color Laser Printer Review

Samsung CLP 300 Mini Personal Color Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been looking pretty hard at the sales flyers over the last few months waiting for a chance to score a color laser printer at a price range that doesn't make me have to eat bag lunches for a month to catch up. A local office superstore had two models I was eying, an HP 1600 and this one. They seemed pretty similar in most regards until [...] dropped the CLP-300 100 dollars below the HP. It was time to grab the bargain.
This is the second Samsung laser printer I have in my home office now, the first one being the little ML-1740. I've had that one for better than a year now and it has been wonderful. So I wasn't afraid to try the Samsung CLP-300 because its name isn't as big as HP's. So I get it home and commence to setting it up. As with the earlier ML-1740, it took about 5 minutes to unpack, route cables, plug in the toner packs, and fire it up. It didn't skip a beat and had a test page done in a jiffy. Drivers for the computer went just as easily. Overall a very, very simple set up.
Back to the toner "packs" (or cartridges) for a bit... I don't think I've ever seen a more simple toner system. This system is literally easier to deal with than inkjet cartridge replacement. The front cover of the printer opens to reveal 4 "holes" for the toner cartridges. Simply remove the protective covers from the 3 color cartridges and 1 black cartridge and pop them into their respective holes. This has to be a step forward for the laser printer world.
Anyway, I've only had this for about a week but have put maybe 200 pages through it already. It works like a champ and I'm really happy I picked it up. I'll list below some of the pros and cons as I see them (in no particular order): Pros:
* Low noise when printing... very low noise actually. Its little more than a light whirring sound.
* Fast printing (about 20 to 25 seconds to the first high quality print and very fast once started).
* Great drivers giving you good printing options like double sided printing, booklet printing (on long or short side of page), watermarks, pre-generated letterhead, ability to print multiple pages per sheet, ability to print posters, etc... ...way too much to list here.
* Decent color photo prints. The quality isn't quite up to the photo quality of the better inkjet photo printers, but its good. And it certainly isn't poor enough to be a negative. I'd say though that if your primary goal is photo prints you might want to compare some other higher priced models before settling on this one. Otherwise, this should suit you fine.
*Size... it fits perfect on my printer stand. This doesn't over power the room by being overly bulky. Its not too much bigger than the ML-1740 and way smaller than its older sibling the CLP-510 (I liked the built in duplexing on the 510 but wasn't too crazy at all about its size).Cons:
* Power... it seems like it uses quite a bit more than the little ML-1740 (no surprise I'm sure) because my battery backup makes a click every few minutes like a brown out spike happens. The ML-1740 makes the lights flicker on occasion but had no effect on the UPS. On a related note however, this printer has a user adjustable power saver mode that puts it to sleep after a set number of minutes.
* Low paper capacity. Only about 150 sheets in the paper tray. But its easy to remove and fill and I doubt I'll ever print more than that in a sitting.
* No front auxiliary feed tray (like the ML-1740) for feeding various sized papers into the machine. The CLP-300 does take various sized papers but you have to use the paper tray.
* Power switch in the back. The ML-1740 had this set up too. How hard can it be to put the switch on the front or even the front side to make it more accessible. Better yet, let the unit be powered on and off automatically by software like some other printers can do. The switch all the way in the back, on the bottom, is not a deal breaker but its an aggravation that I wish Samsung would address in their future models.
* Toner amount... Here's something I'm not sure will be an issue or not in the long run but right now I'm a bit concerned. The toner packs are small. The color ones are a bit smaller than a styrofoam cup while the black one is about as large as a typical ceramic coffee mug but a bit taller perhaps. The technical papers say you'd get about 1000 sheets of color printing per color. I'll edit this review in a few months with my impression of how true that appears to be. The silver lining to this issue might be that the toner packs are cheaper than the typical toner cartridges for other laser printers. And also, according to the Samsung website, this printer is supposed to be cheaper to operate in the long than other printers. A cent or two here or there adds up I guess. So my score of 4 out of 5 stars represents the above pros and cons and my experience so far with this printer. Its not a perfect 5 because there is room for improvement but its a very nice printer that is great to have. And for the price, there is no reason why every home can't have color laser printing now. I can still remember when inkjets were replacing the dot matrix printers... move over inkjets, here we go again.*** Follow Up Edit: 24oct06 (original post 9oct06)***
I'm coming up on a month now of useage and haven't had a problem yet. I would like to add to my comment made above though regarding the quality of the photo prints ... I've done a bunch of pictures so far and I would again encourage people who are looking predominantly for a picture printer to look at a level a bit higher than this one. For what I do, this is fine, but folks looking for photo quality printing would likely find this a bit lacking.
Also, along with the photos and numerous web pages, I've printed several good sized PDF documents with a lot of illustrated graphics and the toner indicators in my printer monitor (the software) shows negligible toner use. I can't confirm this by sight or weight of the toner packs themselves but if the indicators are correct, I'm happy with the mileage I'm getting so far.

Brother MFC-665CW Photo Color All-in-One Printer with Wireless Networking Review

Brother MFC-665CW Photo Color All-in-One Printer with Wireless Networking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having gotten a new desktop replacement computer which lacked the parallel cable port for my old Xerox 490cx multifunction, I got this model because of its functions, wireless capability, and cost (one-fifty at office depot). It's also the first flatbed device I have gotten. Its relatively small footprint was also a selling point. My use is light home office and personal use - short work-related text documents, recipes for wife, color pictures the kids make, simple copying tasks, and for sending and receiving short faxes.
Set-up - a little bit involved as far as setting it up for wireless on my somewhat old netgear router. Still it found my network, and entering the security key was fairly straightforward. It would be nice if its mac address was more obvious. It might be hard for a total novice to hook this up to wireless unless s/he were running an open and unsecure network. While the box touts its wireless capability, the instructions time and time again recommend using usb or Cat5 connection for best results. Rather disturbing they would choose to discourage you from actually using a feature they tout so prominently on its packaging. I had to turn off the computer's firewall for it to find the printer on the network the first time. You have to use the install disk on every computer you want to enable to access this printer. But I got it working, and all connected computers can find it and print to it. Nice to cut down on a single wire (usb or LAN), but you still have a power cord and a phone-in and phone-out cord so you still have a heavily wired set-up.
Features - the LCD screen is a nice touch and it folds up so you can see it from different angles. It has card reader slots so you can print directly from flash memory cards. The print quality is just so-so. I easily could see the grain on text; on graphics the colors bleed a little. Even using photo paper the results are not satisfactory for printing photos. It has individual ink cartridges which is a plus, and they are very elegantly and easily accessed from the front of the machine. Can't comment on ink cartridge duration yet. I like to refill my own cartridges especially black, but don't know yet if these are amenable to after-market ink refilling. Print speed is a little slow for color, and adequate for text. You can load up to 100 sheets in the cartridge easily accessed at the front of the machine. As a scanner, the resolution certainly should be adequate for most home user tasks, but i found the colors of scanned photos lack vibrancy. This could perhaps be touched up using photo-editing software. After getting a question, i checked it out and you can indeed scan to PDF format - just set up a custom scan program.
Other - It has a built in phone handset and answering machine which are a nice touch if you also want to get rid of a separate phone/answering machine. In retrospect the phone is almost useless to me. You can set the machine to answer faxes only, or phone calls also. The PC fax is a great feature, and you can create a cover page in a snap - all you do is "Print" and select PC-fax from the drop-down menu. Unfortunately you can't preview your scanned fax before sending. I have not received a fax yet, but you are able to save these faxes directly as computer documents - not sure which format yet but another great saver of paper and time. I haven't tried the document feeder yet but if it works for a few pages without a jam, i'll be delighted.
I've not owned a brother brand printer before; I hope it lasts as long as previously owned canon and Xerox devices I've had. For its price, I'm satisfied but not blown away.
UPDATE:
It's Broken
I bought all this Brother ink and now it doesn't work.
Upon starting the machine there is a grating sound as if plastic gears are turning against resistance and then the "Paper Jam" message appears. But there is no paper stuck inside. Rebooting (which you can only do by unplugging) doesn't help. A plastic gear has broken off in the cartridge housing. It is out of warranty. This is after 7 months of very light household use, so you might want to refrain from buying this. And this after I bought alot of Brother LC51 ink.

Brother MFC-8460N Network All-in-One Laser Printer Review

Brother MFC-8460N Network All-in-One Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I also have a problem with the printer creasing envelopes. It appears to shift the flap of the envelope slightly while feeding it through the fuser and the heat and pressure causes another crease about 1/8" offset from the original one.
I returned the first unit that I ordered because of a loud squeaking noise that developed while printing. The second unit also squeaks somewhat (Certainly more than my old mfc-8820D), but it doesn't sound like it's dragging a cat through the manual feed slot.
There's a big difference between this unit and my MFC-8820D in the scanning area. On my old printer, I could input an email address on the screen and it would forward the document to that address. This guy requires you to select a network computer and then sends the document there. A memory resident program needs to be running on the computer to process the received document...which is a worthless waste of memory space about 99.99% of the time when the computer is doing it's normal job. The memory resident process also conflicts with some HP network printer software and crashes on a couple of our systems, thus rendering them unusable with this scanner. Needless to say, the old way of doing it was much better.
In retrospect, and despite the 145,000 pages printed, I probably should have spent the $300 to replace the fuser on my 8820D instead of getting this unit. This one is much faster, but the other trade-offs - the lack of duplexing (known at the time of ordering, but the 8860DN wasn't yet shipping) and the dumbing down of the scanner firmware (unknown until received) are serious handicaps.
Oct 30, 2006 update - After about five month of use and about 20K pages printed, my printer is in the shop being repaired. The printer started making loud snapping sounds, like plastic gears stripping, whenever a page was printed...except that the paper jammed every time. The guy in the service center said that he has another identical printer in for repair and that it's the fuser unit that's shot. That would be easy to fix, except that they're on back-order and won't be available for a while. Sigh. I think my next printer will be an HP.
November 14, 2006 - I have to give Brother Service credit. 1000 pages post-repair and my machine broke again. They're shipping me a new printer. This will be my second replacement unit...hopefully this unit will be more solid as my warranty runs out in April.
November 25, 2006 - update - The replacement unit not only shifts the flap on envelopes, it puts creases all over them, rendering them completely unusable for any purpose. If there was a way to totally unwind this purchase, I would in a second. On the other hand, since design of this unit appears to have all the reliability of an alcoholic after a weekend on the town, I purchased the one year extended warranty.
February 10,2007 - update - Well, the machine is now starting to make loud snapping sounds whenever the paper tray is filled up to the full line. It also jams and refuses to feed paper whenever that happens. The solution (so far) is to only fill the paper tray half-full.
I really dislike this piece of junk...so much so that I bought HP for my new offices.
May 13, 2008 - final update - After limping along in the old office for the last year, the Brother finally died (again). The big question is whether to take it to recycling yard, where they would gently take it apart and salvage the parts, or take it to the local car crusher and watch it receive what it deserves. Alas, my ecological side is coming through and I'll recycle it. Oh well, it would have made a great YouTube video...

Brother MFC-8860DN Flatbed Laser All-in-One Printer with Duplex Review

Brother MFC-8860DN Flatbed Laser All-in-One Printer with Duplex
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the 8860DN a couple weeks ago to replace my aging HP 3330. While I'm quite happy with much of the 8860DN, there are a few things that could use improvement. Some of these can be addressed in software, others I fear are hardware issues.
BTW, I'm on my second machine because I thought some of the issues with the first warranted a replacement. Now I know its a "common" issue.
1) The print engine creaks and makes popping sounds as the fuser heats and cools. Even the demo machine in Office Depot does the same thing. The creaking is really annoying if you sit near the machine. A Brother senior tech rep tells me this issue is common to many Brother lasers. Well, gimme a break because HP and others don't creak! **UPDATE** Brother Corporate office tells me the popping sounds are considered "normal" by the engineers and at this time they have no plans to fix. Pathetic if you ask me. I think most users will agree!!!
2) The scanner ADF head will sometimes make odd sounds when its scanning the last page of a multi-page scan. It sounds as if the motor or gears need lubrication.
3) I've had the COPY function lockup on me a couple times (other fucntions continue to work) and the only way to correct is to power cycle. Cause is unknown but the clowns at Brother support tell me to keep power cycling the resolve the problem. IDIOTS!
4) The IFAX feature is not very well explained and is somewhat odd in the way it works (or tries to work). I've yet to really figure it out. As an alternative I use the FAX FORWARD TO EMAIL function which works well.
5) A PC software bug: When scanning multiple pages its impossible to multitask since the scanner interface takes the focus away from whatever you are doing everytime it begins scanning a new page. Brother apparently knows about this issue and will correct in the next software version.
Other than the above isues, I'm fairly satisfied in the short time I've been using this MFC. If I may comment in response to one of the previous reviews, the beep sound is adjustable and I believe if the user took the time to read the manual, he'd be quite happy with the level of customization available on this machine (I rarely hear of people complaining about too many features). Oh, and yes as stoneaged as it sounds, some people still do occasionally receive faxes.
As far as I'm concerned, the print speed is excellent. Even complex pages print quickly with nearly no delay between pages. A huge improvment over my old HP. Also, I find the scan speed on non complex scans to be excellent. Complex and high res scans are somewhat slower, but they are with many scanners (and certainly about every multifucntion I've run across). Print duplexing is another very nice touch and I'm surprised it works as well as it does. The 8860DN gets the job done and it does them well overall.
Things about the 8860DN I prefer over the new HP 3390 I compared it to.
1) 8860 has a legal size scan plate
2) 8860 will fax forward to email
3) 8860 is $150 less with approx. the same cost per page in consumables.
4) 8860 does duplex scan, copy

Brother MFC-8870DW Wireless Flatbed Laser All-in-One Printer Review

Brother MFC-8870DW Wireless Flatbed Laser All-in-One Printer

This was my third Brother MFC printer. I was trying to replace my current MFC9600 that has been been excellent for more than 5 years. I wanted the duplex functionality, the better print quality, as well as the some of the additional features.
And you better believe it, this machine is IT! Faster faxing, faster and better quality scanning, faster copying and printing, better quality prints and copies, and many more very beneficial features that I really liked. being technically savvy, it was a breeze setting it up as a wireless printer without using the Brother wizard in the CD. So, after a quick setup, I was able to complete all my tasks wirelessly...
I was very pleased with my purchase. Everything was actually perfect until I tried printing on an envelope. The first time I printed on an envelope, the result was a completely wrinkled envelope. Then I tried again, and same result. I thought that I could survive with a wrinkled envelope anyway. So, a week later, I tried again. This time, I kept getting the message "Check Paper Size". After a few calls to customer service, the problem was still not resolved. So, I decided to return it to the store.
Printing on an envelope is a show stopper for me! However, I will check back again after a few months. Hopefully Brother will fix this issue so I can buy this printer again.
Yes! I have to admit it! Except for the envelope issue, this is the best printer on the market.

Canon Pixma iP4500 Photo Inkjet Printer (2171B002) Review

Canon Pixma iP4500 Photo Inkjet Printer (2171B002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had a Canon BubbleJet BJC-4200 long ago, and after that printer I was very hesitant to even consider another Canon printer. When my most recent printer died, an HP DeskJet 970cse, I needed to find a good printer that could print duplex and produce quality output. After reading many, many reviews I decided to give Canon another chance. I am very glad that I did so.
The Pixma iP4500 arrived in a huge box, and as it turns out it needed the space. This is a larger printer than I expected, and as a result I had to rearrange my desk to find room for it. That's a small oversight on my part. The printer itself is an unassuming-looking box of a machine, though it resembles more of a printer when the paper trays are populated.
Setup was easy and straightforward, though I do recommend using the "getting started" insert before setting everything up. Though setting everything up is relatively self-explanatory, it is helpful to see the illustration of what to do in order before making the leap. Overall, setup took maybe 20-30 minutes once the parts were all out of the box and everything was set up.
Once configured, installing the drivers is simple. Drop in the CD, follow the prompts, and turn on the printer at the right time. No fuss.
Once set up and powered on, the printer is ready to go to work. I print a majority of my things in duplex mode so I tweaked the driver configuration to make it the default, after which the setting is more or less invisible. Everything in the driver configuration is very easy to find, straightforward, and simple.
There are two ways to feed paper into the iP4500. There is a top-loader which is the default paper source and there is a front-loading paper tray ("cassette" according to Canon's documentation). Heavier papers such as card stock should be loaded from the top-loader.
So, how does this printer perform? I'll break it down into two parts, speed and quality.
Speed - this is a relatively fast printer! Feeding it a print job that conists of a two-sided black and white print this printer can churn out the pages, including the dry time for the front page, in about 20 seconds. Granted, this is my experience and your mileage may vary but it's a good starting point from which to base your evaluation of the speed. My previous printer would take at least a minute to print the very same documents, and it still couldn't keep up when in draft mode. For photo printing it churns out a full-page 8.5"x11" borderless photo in roughly 45 seconds.
Quality - what good is speed without quality? This printer backs it up. The text and basic image quality is acceptable, though it could be a touch better. This is not noticeable in day-to-day print jobs. On photo printing, though, this printer is an absolute showstopper. The photos it prints, on photo paper, are better than most magazine prints and could easily be used for photo studio gallery shots.
It would be nice if the printer actually had a USB cable in the box, but this is a small thing.
Overall, this is a high-quiality, high-performance printer that is sure to please even the staunchest of critics. It is fast, creates beautiful output, and is very easy to set up.

The idea of a multifunction printer, scaner, fax, etc., is a good idea, but this implementation is cludgy and overpriced. To start, the base model does not include fax capabilities, which you must add later for an additional cost.
All in all, the Brother MFC-8820DN is a much better value (around $600) and has everything included.

Canon imageCLASS D320 Personal Digital Copier and Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I must admit, the first review posted here on the D320 made me a little nervous. My experience is quite different, and after several months of ownership I am quite pleased.
I'll give a point by point rebuttle to the initial review, as that's the only point of reference (so far):
1) Yes, pick up a USB cable,
2) Printer driver installation on Win98 essentially required no user intervention. With WinXP however, I do seem to recall having to muck with it more, but I'm hazy on the details now,
3) I have printed scores of multi-page documents, many over 15 pages without any problems whatsoever. I've had no spills or jams of any kind,
4) I have not seen any "paper-curl" problems whatsoever,
5) I leave the paper cassette lid/manual-feed slot in place at all times as I have no problem with it. For doing many two-sided copies, it is indeed easier to place the copies back into the paper cassette. But that's my experience with any copier I've used.
6) Making two-sided copies is easy and as efficient as I expected. I've simply experienced no problems.
7) I've experienced no copier caused misalignments. If my copies have been crooked, it was because I set them on the glass improperly.
I am very happy with this unit. It copies as I expect it to, and prints just the same: quickly and without event. It's been able to properly print from all Windoze applications I've thrown at it, and ones many users may not even be using, such as Ghostscript, Acrobat, SecureCRT, PAF, and all image viewing software I've tried. And I've got several machines networked together (Win98 and WinXP) that can all print to the D320 fine using printer sharing.
BTW, the D320 comes with a full, 3500 page toner cartridge too, not a starter unit as with some printers/copiers.

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this printer because I wanted something cheaper to run than my HP Deskjet (toner is much cheaper than ink), I wanted to be able to print from multiple computers and put the printer anywhere I wanted (instead of being tethered to a specific computer), I wanted the printer to be Mac-compatible, and I wanted the printer to have a duplexer to save on paper (it prints on both sides of the page). This was the only printer in its price class I could find that had all of these features. I bought the printer on sale locally and got it for a good price.
I ran into one problem, which is why I'm only giving this printer only 4 stars. After I hooked it up and installed the software, I noticed that as soon as it went to sleep, it would no longer print. It's supposed to wake up when it gets a print job, but it wouldn't. I finally figured out that I needed to upgrade the network firmware from the Internet. For someone like me with experience as a PC technician, this was no problem, but I think the installation software should guide you through checking to see if everything is up to date, and help you upgrade the firmware.
The paper tray only holds 300 pages, which is less than a ream of paper. At 30 pages per minute, you could run out of paper in only 10 minutes! So it may not be the ideal printer for all but the smallest office settings (but still better than an inkjet for b&w printing). However, I believe you can add an additional paper tray, and there are other models with extra paper capacity built-in.
When I ran into my problem with sleep mode interfering with printing, I e-mailed Brother's technical support (they don't give you a number you can call), but I don't think a human actually reads your e-mail. It was pretty frustrating. Next time I'll try calling their customer service line and see if they can transfer me to tech support.

Samsung ML-2851ND Network-Ready Monochrome Laser Printer Review

Samsung ML-2851ND Network-Ready Monochrome Laser Printer

So far this laser has been great. i was looking for a laser that printed on both sides and network ready. The samsung filled the bill at a very attractive price (can be has for $160 with instant rebate). It was a breeze to setup on Mac OS 10.5 as a network printer. Bonjour found it and just use the Samsung driver. Also since it has native postscript support you can use the Generic Postscript Driver with it as well. Works fine under 10.5 that way as well. Printing speed is awesome, and printing on both sides is great. the smaller form factor is great too.

Samsung CLP-315W Color Laser Printer Review

Samsung CLP-315W Color Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Purchasing supplies for my inkjet printer was running up the $$$. Remembering the old days when we had the office Laserwriter, reminded me how many prints you could get on one cartridge.
We stopped by the local Office Max to see what was available. I thought I was in the market for a mono laser printer. The knowledgeable sales person showed us the 315. I asked him to print a couple of pages and was satisfied with the output. I would have purchased it on the spot, however they didn't carry the 315W... and I wanted a wireless printer.
This gave me time to come home and check it out on the net. The reviews ran the gamete from "Great" to "Don't buy". After consuming reviews till I was dizzy, I decided to place my order on Amazon. I had the printer in 3 days...all in good order.
After trying it out for a few days here is what i Have found out.
Negative reviews. I really don't get this... Anyone who has been around laser printers knows that inkjet photos are far superior. I didn't purchase this with great color printing in mind. I'll use my Canon inkjet for that.
Set up for WiFi is very difficult. This I completely agree with. I have a Mac (long time user) and I finally had to give up and call Samsung.
Samsung tech support is worthless. I think they finally got tired of hearing this. I talked with a bright young fellow who nursed me thru the WiFi maze. Come to find out my cable has a dynamic IP and is always changing. He helped me switch it to a static IP. After that it worked perfect. Yes, he even knew all about the Apple Airport router. I would give wireless setup a try, then call before you blood pressure gets too high. It was a good experience.
After I got the printer going, I was able to connect my MacBook immediately.
Smell on start up... Yes it does, but by the next day it was gone.
Print quality poor. I don't get this one. If you are printing monochrome, It's as good as most laser printers. If you are printing a jpeg image that has black type in it... the image is seen as color and you get some haloing around the letters. Some documents are fine some are poor. I lay out my printed matter with this in mind and get great looking prints.
Toner... You can find pretty fair prices on the web. I've decided to give refilling a try. It doesn't look to difficult. It sure beats the cost of replacing the cartridges. We'll see what happens.
Instructions. Print out the PDF manual. Pretty good info there. The printed matter that comes in the box is next to useless.
There is plenty to be said on the plus side. How can you beat a color laser printer for $200?
I'm very satisfied with the quality of the printer and the looks of the printed page. Now let's see how much the cost per page drops.

Umax Astra 4000U Scanner Review

Umax Astra 4000U Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent piece of hardware, with quality and features rivaling those found on scanners used by my professional photography friends. Well built and very easy to install with the USB interface, the 4000U, coupled with a good printer and the right medium, will give photographic prints indistinguishable from any you'll get at the corner pharmacy. A wide range of choices of scanning resolution and color depth, plus the legal size scanning bed make this as versatile as you'll ever need a scanner to be. The only caveat would be the LE versions of Photoshop and Omnipage OCR, although these versions will certainly meet the needs of most users. This scanner is certainly worth the few extra bucks it costs more than the bargain-level scanners and will still be in use when the others have been put on the shelf.

Plus, you can scan multiple images at one time for improved productivity.
The Astra 4000U manages documents, scanning images and text into almost any application, including e-mail and fax. Microtek ScanMaker 4850 Scanner Review

Microtek ScanMaker 4850 Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This seemed to be a very attractive model, especially when compared with HP products. The unit itself is impressive for personal (non-business) needs.
After installing the software on a laptop running XP per Microtek's instructions, scanned files did not open. Using the Microtek.com tech support site, I e-mailed the company for a solution. Within 24 hours I had received a reply with detailed instructions to rectify the Scan Wizard 5 bugs. These instructions did not remedy the problem. A second e-mail was forwarded to Microtek asking for further assistance.
The reply: I needed to call (not toll-free) and to speak with a "consultant" regarding this "complicated issue". For the priviledge of correcting the bugs in Microtek's software, I would be charged [money] for up to 30 minutes plus [money]/minute thereafter. This ... response to milk me for a product I had less than a week caused me to come up with a solution to the tech issues: return the scanner for a full refund.
Recommendaton: Avoid Microtek at all costs. The company is interested in your money only. Canon, Epson and Visioneer are three nice alternatives.
