Canon PG-50 Black FINE Ink Cartridge-High Capacity Review

Canon PG-50 Black FINE Ink Cartridge-High Capacity
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the larger cartridges because I had read that they last so much longer. However, after having used a couple of the more expensive cartridges (which cost 50% more than the PG-40) I am convinced they do not last 50% longer than the regular cartridges. In fact I saw very little difference. After examining the boxes, I realize that the larger cartridge only holds 22ml versus 16ml for the regular (37.5% more). It doesn't even seem to last a third longer to me.
So I will purchase the regular cartridges from now on. Same print quality, but a better value.Texas user

Sangean WR-2 Digital AM/FM Tabletop Radio, Black Review

Sangean WR-2 Digital AM/FM Tabletop Radio, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very appealing clock radio with digital readout that gives you name of song, artist, and other information as you listen. The mono aural speaker is warm and full. The radio is attractive, solid and well-built, evincing nothing cheap or plastic-laden. The AM is very good. Most FM stations come in strong. But hard-to-get FM stations like 89.3 from Pasadena (I live 40 miles away in Torrance) requires that I move the FM antenna, but this is not a big deal, just a nitpick.
Most listeners will love the WR-2. But if you're a radio buff like I am and enjoy the outstanding FM reception of the Grundig S350, the Kaito 1101 and 1103 models (called Degen in China), then I'm afraid the WR-2 will disappoint. To be fair to the WR-2, the more expensive Bose radio suffers the same problem of mediocre FM reception.
Another important point: Because this radio has a remote control, it works great in your computer office. You can keep the WR-2 six feet or so away from your computer and avoid interference as you toggle stations and volume with your remote.
Post Script: Make sure to turn on the external antenna switch in the back of the Sangean. It improves reception by tenfold.
Update: I bought a second WR-2 (in black) three years after the first and get excellent FM reception so apparently the radio has improved in newer models. New rating: 5 stars.

Boasting an acoustically balanced wooden enclosure and an enhanced front-firing 3-inch speaker, the Sangean WR-2 tabletop radio offers the sound and features of a living room system in a cabinet that fits conveniently in a bedroom, kitchen, or garage. Any discussion of the WR-2 begins with its black wooden housing, which is rich in both appearance and tone. The cabinet's front surface features the speaker on the left side, a series of intuitively placed control buttons toward the bottom, and a generously sized LCD display in the middle with three brightness levels. More importantly, the cabinet teams with the 7-watt amplifier and the acoustic bass compensation system to add warmth and depth to the audio. Complementing the housing is Sangean's advanced RF/IF electronic circuitry, which picks up distant AM and FM stations and reproduces them with unmatched clarity, making music and even talk programs come alive.
Even though the WR-2 is advertised as an AM/FM radio, it offers much more than a standard digital tuner, including a Radio Data System (RDS) that displays short text messages on applicable FM stations, along with support for the Enhanced Other Network (EON) and its traffic information (available in certain regions). And unlike most tabletop radios, the WR-2 lets listeners adjust the treble and bass levels via the variable volume control. In its default mode, the rotary volume knob displays the volume level from 1 to 60. Tap it once, however, and it turns into a full-range treble control, and two taps creates a full-range bass control. Additional features include a clock with an alarm (radio or buzzer), an auxiliary input jack for connecting such devices as an iPod or MP3 player (both of which sound great through the speaker), a recording output jack, 10 memory presets that help you quickly find your favorite stations, and a full-featured infrared remote control.
A final bonus stems from the power backup function, which plays the radio for six minutes during a power failure (great for emergencies) and retains the memory preset and clock values for about an hour. The WR-2 measures roughly 9.5 by 4.5 by 6 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 5.5 pounds.
What's in the Box WR-2 tabletop radio, detachable power cord, infrared remote control, user's manual.

UPEK Eikon To Go Digital Privacy Manager Fingerprint Reader Review

UPEK Eikon To Go Digital Privacy Manager Fingerprint Reader
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My previous laptop had a built in fingerprint sensor, I became spoiled by the ease and security of just swiping my finger to log on. This product uses the same software that my laptop had, and I believe it's used by many computer manufacturers using fingerprint readers.
My current laptop a Toshiba Qosmio has face recognition that only works in bright light, even then it takes at least 10 sec. to "recognize" me. I gave up on it, too many bugs.
This reader plugs right into a USB port. When not in use, the connector plug recesses with the cover that protects the sensor, so it's extremely portable.
The one thing I've found, is I need to be careful with it sticking out of the USB port, I could see it being damaged if a heavy object were placed on the end of the reader with nothing under to support it, but the same is true with a flash drive.
I wish my laptop had a built in reader, or that the Toshiba's "new" technology worked properly, but this is an excellent substitute.
I've been using it for a couple of months now and haven't had any problems.

Canon BJC-80 Portable Printer Review

Canon BJC-80 Portable Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have nothing but good things to say about the BJC-80. I've had it for two years, use it almost daily (mostly for color graphics printing) and it's still going strong. It travels well and is very convenient to use. Black and white print quality is excellent and color print quality is out of this world. I have the battery pack and use infrared with my Thinkpad notebook (something about wireless printing that can really impress a client!). I also use the scanning adapter - works fine on the road, but I prefer a flatbed scanner for most jobs.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Canon BJC-80 Portable Printer

For exceptionally portable printing options, the Canon BJC-80 offers all you could ask for wrapped in one very sleek package. Advanced printing technologies smooth black edges and separate colors for supreme legibility and exquisitely clear images; print speeds of 4 ppm black and 2 ppm color are on the slow side, but the final results are worth the wait. A 760 x 300 dpi supplies dense, true coloration on envelopes, high-gloss film, photo paper, plain paper or transparencies, on any size sheet up to 8.5 by 14 inches.
Weighing just over three pounds, the black case snaps shut and can be tucked right in your laptop's carrying case. Additional optional accessories like the portable power pack or scanner kit will expand the BJC-80's capabilities to that of your home printer, while the included 30-sheet input tray allows you to keep media organized even while on the go. Canon includes a one-year warranty covering parts and service.

Epson WorkForce 520 Color Ink Jet All-in-One (C11CA78241) Review

Epson WorkForce 520 Color Ink Jet All-in-One (C11CA78241)
Average Reviews:

No question, this printer produces great prints, I am delighted with that aspect of it.
It does have some drawbacks, its pretty noisy, but whatever it does, it does it quickly.
Difficulty in inserting the paper in the rear, I am getting the hang of it now, the scans that print out are outrageously good, so are the prints made on glossy.
I hit one snag that took a little doing, when printing text if I changed the lettering style and size, the printer would not accept it, after a little looking around, found the problem, it was my fault, now, all is well.
A very nice printer, that works well and is certainly worth the money.
I would buy it again, had an hp that cost about the same as the Epson, the Epson has is all over the HP

Wizcom ReadingPen TS Portable Reading Tutor (WRPTS) Review

Wizcom ReadingPen TS Portable Reading Tutor (WRPTS)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The ReadingPen TS works as specified.
I purchased this device for someone who has a reading disability. Their comprehension and retention is much better when something has been first read to them. After the first reading, they often can re-read text without difficulty.
What isn't immediately obvious from the product description/technical specifications is that you can only scan one line of text at a time. Therefore, if you're needing an entire page or paragraph read, you'll have to pause after each line and listen to that line being read before moving to the next line. This makes it a very slow and tedious process. I returned it because of this limitation.
The reading voice is a standard computer type voice. Nothing earth shattering but, once you get used to the voice, you can hear the words fairly easily. For me, this is acceptable since it pretty much represents the current technology capabilities of most all retail devices that read "text".
With regular frequency, I did find that a scanned line got completely messed up and had to be re-scanned. You have to be very steady and smooth when scanning a line.
We didn't look much into the other capabilities (i.e. translation, games, dictionary, etc...) since that wasn't the primary purpose for buying the device.
It didn't have any problems with different font sizes/styles.
I definitely could see where the pen could be of great use to someone with greater needs.
IMPORTANT NOTE: No problems with returning the ReadingPen and folks at J&R (vendor) were very helpful with the return.

Canon ImageCLASS MF4570dn Laser Multifunction Printer (4509B020AA) Review

Canon ImageCLASS MF4570dn Laser Multifunction Printer (4509B020AA)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We got this machine to replaced our Canon MF5770 that we had for about 4 years, and finally sucame to the dreaded "download standby" error. We use all functions of the machine, both this one and the MF5570 which it replaced.
We are a small medical research clinic, and the machines usually gets about 50 pages on average sent to them either from a print job or a fax. Many days it will be quite a bit more. We also fax jobs out a few times a day. The new machine is a definite upgrades in many ways, and a downgrade in one critical way (though how critical will very per person).
So what's great about this machine?
- Duplexing: Works great and is speedy. It also duplexes faxes and print jobs.
- Networking: Once set up correctly you can print to this printer from anywhere, and scan from the computer or from the machine to a computer on your network.
- Speed: Print jobs are fast.
- Paper tray: Holds plenty of paper and the translucent cover lets you see when you are running low.
- Size: Its about half the size of the printer it replaced, and yet its still faster, and does more.
- Scanning: The included software is a breeze to use, and the ability to initiate scanning from the machine or the computer is ideal. Before only the one computer attached to the machine could scan, but now all the computers in the clinic can scan. This is a huge time saver for us.
- Energy Saver Mode: Works great, and wakes up super fast from this mode so no waiting to print or fax or copy but you still save energy.
So whats not so great about this machine?
- Text quality: The text printed from the machine is just a bit not right. I mean, most people will not notice is, but the MF5770 had superb text rendering, and this machine just doesn't. Its completely passable, and like I mentioned most people would not even notice. Its too sharp, and not smooth, is the real way to describe it. Some people might even prefer the extra sharpness, but I sure didn't, and neither did the PCMag editors.
- Buttons: The buttons are like tictacs in shape and sort of hollow, and are not great on the fingers, and sort of small. The layout is also a little weird. The menu okay button is a big round circle and I keep hitting it instead of the button i actually mean to hit, the green ok button for initiating an actual activity.
- Noise: Its very quiet when not in use, but maybe a tad too loud when in use. However its fast so its not noisy for very long.
Some other things. I've seen it asked many places to let me just clear it up here. This machine will provide a confirmation page for faxes and include an image of the fax facesheet. It is not located under the fax settings but under the reports setting. You just need to go to reports-->fax tx-->print report with image after each transmission-->yes/on. If you set the machines up correctly, you can have it so that the machines scans a file and attaches it right to an email with the push of one button. Love this feature as we often have to email scanned documents.
This machine got the editor's choice award from PC mag, and rightly so. For the price you get an incredibly versatile, speedy, machine that doesn't take up much space and can handle the work load of a small office with ease. You just can't beat that.

Cb Radio K30 35 Inch Magnet Mount Antenna Review

Cb Radio K30 35 Inch Magnet Mount Antenna
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As an old (and I mean OLD) CB'er, I've been through about all the configurations of antennas you can imagine, from 102" whips to bottom loaders, mid-loaders, top-loaders and rabbit ears. In the end, the golden goal is to get that SWR rating down to as close to "1" as you can. The K30 consistently does this.
First off, if you are just throwing an antenna onto a store-bought CB, forget it...most won't come close to 2, let alone 1. Get a 2-3' jumper and an SWR meter, read the instructions on how to set the SWR, and plan on following these instructions to actually calibrate your antenna...doesn't matter who's antenna you buy. Out of the package, I find the K30 assembled comes in around 2.2 on channels 1 and 40, as has my last one I bought. After trimming 3/4" off the metal whip with a pair of snips, and a couple of dead-keys, I got the SWR balanced at 1.4 for channels 1 and 40, with channel 20 dead-keying 1.07. That's amazing for a $30 antenna! I am getting 3.97 watts out, 4.68 watts in at full Rf gain. I consistently get 12-15 mile communications with the K30, and can get out 10-12 miles on an average day...you just won't do this with another antenna...no matter how much you fight with it. While the Wilson 'Lil-Wil' looks similar, it is NOT close to being a true competitor.
Bottom line: the K30 is a great antenna. They provide you with enough whip, that you can trim it into good/great SWR. The magnet is strong and holds on well, without walking, at 70-mph. It grounds well. It can take a load if you use this on 10-meter, up to 300-watts...which is also nice, if you are like me swapping out the antenna between 11-meter CB and 10-meter bands. (I use a homemade quad on my 10-meter, but only because I like the 12-db gain from it...doesn't keep from testing little magnet-mounts, though).

Epson Stylus NX200 All-In-One Review

Epson Stylus NX200 All-In-One
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a pretty solid multi-function machine.
Pros:
Scanner: The scanner is fast and does a great job recognizing documents/pictures/etc. You can set specific settings if needed or go with the standard settings for ease of use. I don't know how many of you will remember the scanners from the mid-late 90's, but that was the last scanner I had (proprietary software, slow, loud, etc) and this one impressed the heck out of me. All my documents are now scanned in jpeg format with good, clear resolution.
Printer: I haven't printed pictures because I do so through Walgreens or Target, but it does a great job printing the basic needs of a household. Receipts, Google driving directions and various documents come off the printer quickly and in good quality.
Copier: Not much to say. It copies. Does a good job. Definitely user-friendly.
Price: Can't beat 30-40 dollars.
Cons:
Ink: This is where it lost 2 stars for me. You can't just "print in black only" - even when you print in black, it's using colors. The reason Epson gives for this is that "it needs to create certain shades of grey" but the real reason is that Epson is trying to make their money back in printer cartridges. If I print in black only, I'm still going to run out of ink in my color cartridges and there is no override. So I can't just replace the black cartridge, I have to replace all the cartridges that run out of ink.
It's pretty shady of Epson, but if you look online you can find plenty of great places to buy discounted ink. That's what I do, and this printer works just fine with a good off-brand ink substitute.
Overall for the price it's hard to beat. I would like to see a better model for their black-only printing, but if that's the worst thing I have to deal with after a year of solid use... I'm not doing too bad.

The BCI-3eBk is good quality black ink for an inkjet printer. I have used this ink for a couple of years now and don't recall it smudging on the pages I print. The price on this product (compared to HP products) is fair, but I am able to print a 100 to 200 pages before running out of ink. Of course, you will get more pages out of this cartridge if you print more color graphics than text.

Epson Perfection 1640SU Photo Scanner Review

Epson Perfection 1640SU Photo Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Epson Perfection Photo 1640SU is an excellent scanner. Although a bit more pricey than other home scanners, its resolution is unrivaled for the price. I like the one-button scanning it provides. The setup and software are easy. The automatic scanning modes are wonderful and do a great job, however, I like scanning from the TWAIN software from Photoshop because of the customizability it provides. The photo attachment was really surprising to me in the resolution that it provides. I have scanned 35 mm negatives and enlarged them to 5 x 7 inch prints; these prints look like photographs. I even did an 8x10 inch photo enlargement. The photo looks great on the monitor, however, it took forever to do any manipulations. This was not the fault of the scanner, but rather due to the large size of the file (which was around 700 Mbytes). It ended up crashing my computer. I will stick to 5x7 inch prints or use lower resolution scanning in the future.
I especially like the on-off switch on the front of the scanner; my previous scanner did not have this item. I have scanned many photographs now and have acheived magnificent results. This is a scanner that can do routine jobs but also specialized business-quality scanning. Thank you Epson!

Epson Perfection 1250 Photo Flatbed Scanner
Average Reviews:

With all the hype about the image quality of Epson scanners, I was disappointed by the lack of quality that came from the one I just got. In short, there's dust under the glass, inside the scanner where it's unreachable, that I can see with the visible eye, and that is magnified in scanned images. Image quality would be excellent except there's dust specks all over the place on the images. Since consumers have complained of a similar dust problem with previous Epson scanners, I thought the company would fix it with this new model, but they didn't. In fact, quality control doesn't seem to have improved--there's even a fingerprint on the underside of the glass. I'm returning this one and getting a Cannon or HP instead.
