HP Officejet 7500A Wide Format e-All-in-One E910a (C9309A#B1H) Review

HP Officejet 7500A Wide Format e-All-in-One E910a (C9309A#B1H)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This all-in-one HP Officejet performs the four functions of printing, faxing, scanning and copying. It does each as good or better than the standalone version of each of these activities. On the printing side, the quality of the printed documents and pictures also rivals that of third-party publishers, especially those on photographic paper. The prints, which can be borderless, have sharp, vivid and nicely saturated colors.
The nine-step installation process took about 45 minutes. All four functions were then up and running. Connectivity can be wired or wireless Ethernet, or through a USB connection to a PC. I connected the HP Officejet 7500A through a wireless wifi connection on my home office network. The unit saw the name of my network on its LCD display, and then prompted me for the network password, which is entered into the display unit.
I printed two "draft" documents, one in black and white, and one in color. The 22-page black-and-white Word document printed in 56 seconds. The 16-page web document of colored product pages from amazon.com, took 68 seconds. The quality of the draft documents is very good and perfectly fine for everyday use.

Since this is a wide-format printer, I printed a borderless 13 by 19 photograph from Photoshop Elements. The quality of the printed image is outstanding. It is as good or better than an emulsion-based print. I also printed the same image on a borderless 8 ½ by 11 to test for color consistency between various sizes of photographic paper. Both images were beautiful and consistent.
There are a couple of nice enhanced features of this all-in-one unit. The first is the auto document feeder, which feeds the FAX, copying and scanning functions. I stacked a 40-page document into it, and created a PDF file of the document in a few minutes.
The other enhanced feature is ePrint, which allows printing to the unit from anywhere on the Internet. During the setup process, an email address is assigned to the printer. You can print most standard document and image types by attaching then to its email address, and then sending it. The HP instructions say that "a print job might be delayed up to 5 minutes" before it prints. My delay time was eight seconds. This is a neat feature, which also includes a level of security that allows for limiting inbound email-based print jobs to a list of email addresses that you can create and manage online.
The HP Officejet 7500A is solidly built. It is replacing a 12-year-old Canon copier, an 11-year-old HP printer and a 5-year-old HP scanner. The quality of this HP Officejet 7500A is simply better than the "parts," so it is time to replace these older units. I think this HP unit will also last ten or more years as well.

Midland 1001Z 40-Channel CB Radio Review

Midland 1001Z 40-Channel CB Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So, you're sitting there viewing this page in your browser, perhaps with a look of doubt in your face. That's why you've scrolled down here to the reviews. You're thinking to yourself "A $30 CB? It can't be worth a flip, right?". I tell ya what, I was thinking the same thing. But I gave it a shot and installed it in my wife's little '97 Corolla a few days ago, and so far I've been pretty impressed.
When I pulled it out of its box, my first thought was "Wow, cheap". And indeed it is. Its plastic case has almost no weight to it. The knobs and switches have the tactile feedback of a dirt-cheap appliance from Wal-Mart. Being the ham radio geek that I am, the first thing I did was pull out my trusty phillips screwdriver and open the case. More cheapness on the inside, all of the components no doubt obtained from the lowest bidder somewhere in Asia. However, I didn't see any sign of shoddy manufacturing that I've seen in other super-cheap products. No solder marbles shaking around inside, no apparent bad solder joints, components all in good shape, and everything seems to fit and function well. I put it back together.
Time to install. I spent an hour measuring and cutting a hole in the plastic tray beneath the stereo in our little Corolla to accommodate the length of the unit ; slid it in and secured it with 3M double sided tape. It looks pretty good, non obtrusive, black case matching the rest of the plastic in the car. It will no doubt fit will in other small cars too. After some snipping and soldering, I had power from the backside of the cigarette lighter. I temporarily attached my antenna (more on antennas later) and turned it on.
My main gripe is the channel knob. The flimsiness of the channel knob is really the only giveaway as to just how cheap of a radio this is. It "clacks" when you turn it, and feels like a child's toy when you do so. The channel doesn't change with every "clack", it could be 2 clacks or one clack before it actually changes. But, it works. And it doesn't feel like it's about to fall off or fly apart, so I'll let it slide. I go to channel 19 and key the mic to ask for a radio check. A trucker on I-20 about 5 miles away tells me it's working fine and sounds OK. I mention that it cost $30, and we share a laugh. That's when I notice my huge metal garage door is still closed. Nice, the radio works pretty well. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to hear the speaker since I mounted it flush with the plastic in the dash, speaker covered. I had even bought a $10 cheapo extension speaker from Amazon with the radio. But it's still pretty loud! And it doesn't sound too bad when I crank up the volume. Not bad! I declined to install my extension speaker...for now at least.
So I install my mag mount antenna on the truck, tuck the wires in, and put everything back together. Let me give you some radio nerd advice about antennas, because there seems to be lots of confusion about this in CB world. A -LEGAL- CB radio puts out 4 watts AM. That's it. All of them, expensive or inexpensive, doesn't matter...4 watts AM if it's legal. And if you want it to "get out", then you need to squeeze out each of those 4 watts as best as possible. The CB band is around 27 MHZ, or around 12 meters. Boring technicalities aside, it basically means you need a "large" antenna for best efficiency. The absolute best CB antenna ever made is the good ol' 102" whip. You can order them from Radio Shack for about $20. But 102" is huge, and unless you're driving a big truck, it will probably look bad. The second-best antenna you can get, in my opinion, is the Wilson 1000. It has a 62" whip, which is pretty long but doesn't look too bad on a car. They come in mag mount or permanent mount. I'm using a mag mount. Now once you've got the antenna installed, you're not finished. You need to tune it for a good SWR. Go buy a cheapo SWR meter and a small piece of coax from your local CB shop or truck stop, read some directions on the internet, and tune that thing as best as you can get it. The local CB shop might even do it for you if they're nice. It WILL make a difference, and you need all the help you can get when you're only running 4 watts.
So, now I have everything installed, antenna tuned, and it looks nice. I start up the car out and cruise around town. I chat with a few other locals in town, as well as truckers passing by on I-20. This little radio is working just as well as my "big" CB in my other car, which cost almost 3 times as much. It doesn't look fancy or have all the features that one does, but when it comes to just plain talking, this cheap guy gets the job done admirably. Someone in another review mentioned how well the squelch works and I can confirm that. This radio may be cheap, but function-wise it works great. The only "dumb" design decision I've noticed is that the speaker shuts off if you unplug the mic. But that doesn't effect you really, you need a mic to use a CB anyway.
Wow, this got pretty long, but hopefully it'll help someone out there. If you want a basic CB to do basic CB stuff and don't want to spend a lot of money; go ahead and buy this one. I'll give it 4 stars, deducting only for the flimsy feeling of the channel knob and switches. It's one of the best values I've ever come across in all my years of goofing around with radio. Just remember though, it's all about the antenna. Get a nice long one and tune it as best as you can, and this radio will serve you well.

Brother MFC-9320CW High Quality Digital Color All-in-One Printer with Wireless Networking Review

Brother MFC-9320CW High Quality Digital Color All-in-One Printer with Wireless Networking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(Updated to reflect experience and the updated version "C" firmware.)
This Brother color MFC is a reasonable choice if you are looking for a wired or wireless networked high speed laser-like color printer, copier, scanner and fax all-in-one, but do not need duplex (two-sided) printing/faxing/scanning. Personally, I duplex almost everything to save paper, and so would prefer the model Brother MFC-9840CDW Color Laser Multifunction Center with Wireless Interface and Duplex which is a small price increase over this one. (You can manually duplex with the MFC-9320CW by printing odd numbered pages, taking the output stack and placing it in the paper tray, and the printing the even number pages. But, just one paper jam would ruin that process.)
I have a variety of complaints about the machine and the software which prevent me from giving it more than three stars.
Note that laser-class printers are no substitute for photo printers. Do not expect photo quality color (or even a very wide color gamut) or the ability to print on photo paper. That is not what this class of device is for. If photo quality is your expectation, look to inkjet photo printers. (The scanner on this device is photo-quality, though.)
My rating is based on the reasonable expectations of what a color laser is supposed to do: spot color, color graphics, mixed text and graphics documents, reasonable color copies.... and all water resistant, due to the fused toner.
Both wired and wireless networking worked well, although the instructions for the wireless setup are written by and for a geek, so if you're not a techie, you'll probably need a tech friend to help if your wireless network is secure, with hidden SID and password. It is really annoying that the device prints two sheets of paper when you change the network settings, one with the wired and one with the wireless settings. That should be a user option.
The printer comes with four toner cartridges, each good for about 1,000 pages according to the instructions. But, there is some kind of bug in the firmware or the software. After printing only a handful of pages, both the device and the software monitor reported that the Cyan cartridge was almost empty. The color bar charts showed it empty. But, the web-based control panel for the printer showed all cartridges full. The only way to get rid of the Cyan empty messages in all places was to turn the MFC off and then back on again. Installing the software onto another computer on the network caused the message to come back - this time saying that both Cyan and Yellow were empty. Updating the firmware from the delivered version "A" to the current downloadable version "C" seems to have fixed this problem.
Print quality is quite good, but requires adjustments for printing photos. I printed the PDF for a software user manual that included various color screenshots. It looks terrific and printed at close to the 17 PPM advertised rate. Nice.
Even if it is not a photo printer, photos are part of what will be printed on a color laser - as part of newsletters, real estate flyers, business cards, etc. So I looked at what I needed to do to get the best results from color-calibrated source images.
Anything containing photos really has to be printed in the 600 X 2400 resolution to get all of the details. (600 x 600 is fine for most other documents.) The white foam of the waterfall in a test image just blurred together at 600 x 600 resolution. 600 x 600 on this LED printer is not the same crispness as 600 x 600 on a laser.
I found that photographic images require printing with the Vivid color option, and with brightness increased. Even though a color wheel looked good, a calibration image containing various faces for skin tones, color patches and resulted in skin tones that looked sepia, in spite of some other colors in the image looking close to correct. I had to bump the red level to +12 and brightness to +4 in the print settings dialog to start to get the skin to look like skin. Even then, it was somewhat orange-sepia. Neither the Caucasian, Asian or African American babies' skin looked right, but the image was more usable. It seemed wrong that a bump of +12 (out of 20) on red made so little difference. Further, on making a color photocopy, where there is only +1 and +2 for red, the +1 improved the red in some places, but made green grass look yellow. There is no reason that adding red should cause that. So, I think that there are some firmware and/or software issues yet to be resolved here by Brother.
Manual fed items must be fed one at a time, unlike other Brother MFC machines that have a multifunction tray that accepts several sheets at once as an alternate feed tray. But a plus is that when you use the manual feed slot, you can open the back of the machine so that thick card stock can feed straight through the machine (after setting the paper type setting to "thicker"). It is not a truly straight path - the paper comes out the back pointing upwards and has a slight curl to it.
After attempting to print both brochures and business cards with the manual feed, I have to give the manual feed mechanism only 1 star. It is impossible to get a piece of paper to feed through perfectly straight. So, it is hard to get business cards, labels, etc to align properly. The manual feed slot has guide bars that are only an inch and half long in a lip that is a little over 2 inches long. So, not only must you stand there, holding the piece of paper as you insert it (there is no tray), it is impossible in a little over an inch to make sure that the piece of paper is feeding straight. Infuriating. I should note that trying to print brochures on thin stock via the paper tray resulted in skewed images also - so the printer is incapable of feeding paper absolutely straight there either.
The manual feed is also infuriatingly temperamental. If you don't push the piece of paper far enough, or too far, the printer senses a paper jam. No paper has even entered the printer yet. The directions ask you to open the printer and remove all four drum-toner elements - which requires someplace convenient to put them. In this case, that is not necessary - just shut the printer again and wait for several minutes while it rechecks itself, try to fee your paper again, and repeat.
Toner fixing was a major problem with the business card printing. More often than not, the last 1/3 of the page was not fixed and just smeared. I found a buried setting for 'improve fixing', and also held the paper as it came out the rear slot of the machine, and things improved. But, I still experienced smeared or lumpy toner on the page itself at times - some of it no doubt left on the drums from the previous page that was not properly fixed.
The software is common to most Brother MFC products. I am more than annoyed that after so many years, Brother has done nothing to improve their software for Macs. Yes, things work on a Mac, but you do not have the identical functionality as on Windows.
The printer driver interface for Windows has various options of handling (manual) duplexing. On the Mac, your options are to print either odd or even pages and in normal or reverse order. Finally, Windows users have ControlCenter3 which lets me choose between my two installed Brother MFC devices. On the Mac, it is ControlCenter2 which will not give multiple devices in its drop-down list. I have to browse each time I want to switch to a different Brother MFC.
Another complaint about the software installation is that it does not automatically check the Brother web site to see if there are updates. You have to manually do that after installing. Even then, the Brother web site is not very transparent, giving September 2009 dates to "updates" that, when downloaded, were created in January 2009 and thus are not even required. The names and functions of the update files are pretty obscure. I know what they all do as I've had Brother machines for some years. But, non-techie friends would not have a clue as to what to download or why. As an example: you would never know that if the ControlCenter stopped running and needed to be re-installed, that it was part of the Twain driver.
Scanning on the Mac stores the scanned files in the hidden /tmp/ directory at the root of the boot drive. You have to use Finder's menus to go to that folder and purge it. On the other hand, if you set up custom scans, you can both specify the folder into which the resulting file is placed, as well as have a Finder window open to that folder after a scan completes. I recommend this approach for Windows and Mac.
The OCR capabilities delivered via the Twain driver or ControlCenter are really primitive on Windows, and just plain bad on OS X. On Windows, the OCR is done by PaperPort OCR; on Mac it is done by Newsoft OCR. When presented with a page having three columns of text and a few font changes, and selecting rich text scanning, on Windows, the text was scanned almost error-free, but without any font changes. On OS X (Snow Leopard), the text was scanned as columns with breaks but with lots of errors and all over the page; basically useless. Even on Windows, better OCR software can scan the full page, including layout and images. Not so here.
The MFC has a USB port in the front into which you can plug a thumb drive or digital camera. With no connection to a computer, you can page through the files on the drive or camera and choose the ones you want to print directly from the memory device. I printed a PDF from a thumb drive just fine, and then scanned an image...Read more›

Samsung Monochrome Multifunction Laser Printer (SCX-4623F) Review

Samsung Monochrome Multifunction Laser Printer (SCX-4623F)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not sure about the other review, that's why I decided to add my 2 cents. I was able to get the printer out of the box, plug it in, install the CD and have a fully functional printer/scanner/fax within 5 minutes and I have a Windows 7, 64 bit PC. It scanned and uploaded the image to my Adobe program on the first try (I was not expecting this to be the case having read the other review). The image was very clear - in fact it was far superior to my old brother all-in-one that this printer replaced. The fax machine worked equally as well and I was able to fax a Word document from my computer with no problems on the first try. The fax interface is easier to use than that of my old brother machine as well. So far no complaints whatsoever - wonderful print/copy quality and easy to use fax/scanner. I paid $130 for it at Office Max. For this price, I feel like I got a bargain.

Canon DR-2080C Color Document Scanner Review

Canon DR-2080C Color Document Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This unit is small and compact, yet has some very nice features. I especially like the duplexing feature allowing it to scan BOTH sides in the same pass, no flipping a stack of documents over. It works from within Adobe, and Microsoft Office Imaging.
It does have a drawback, however, the drivers are not Windows XP, and it can be a bit disconcerting installing them. I finished the installation with no adverse affects (that I noticed) to my 2 laptops, and a stand alone machine.
If you travel and need a high speed scanner, I highly recommend this unit.

A compact scanner from Canon, the DR-2080 provides high quality color scans and fits onto nearly any convenient surface. A 24-bit color depth provides brilliant colors, while a 600 x 600 dpi maximum resolution ensures that even the fine print is clear and legible.
The DR-2080C connects to a host computer via either a USB 2.0 or SCSI-II port, and supports Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP, and NT operating systems. Able to handle originals up to 8.5 by 14 inches, the DR-2080C still has a very small 11.7-by-3.89-inch footprint, freeing up valuable desktop space for other uses, while a weight of just 5.5 makes transportation a snap.
The included Canon CapturePerfect software provides a quick and easy editing tool for your scans, and sports a scan-to-email feature that lets you send originals directly from the scanner. Optical character recognition allows you to easily create searchable text files out of your scans, while a pre-scan feature lets users adjust scan settings on one page, then apply those settings to an entire batch scan.
Scanning speeds in simplex mode are as fast as 20 ppm, while duplex mode supports speeds of up to 40 ppm. The automatic document feeder lets you scan up to 50 pages with the touch of a button and supports originals of up to 0.2 mm in thickness. Brother MFC-8120 3-in-1 USB/Parallel Multifunction Laser Printer/Copier/Scanner (Refurbished) Review

Brother MFC-8120 3-in-1 USB/Parallel Multifunction Laser Printer/Copier/Scanner (Refurbished)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used this monochrome laser printer/copier/scanner for over a year now everyday for very frequent printing for office at-home work. It may have been a refurbished model since I recall it was fairly cheap. It has been reliable and fast. Since I purchased the printer/copier/scanner, I have used after-market toner cartridges - either refilled Brother cartridges or non-OEM replacement toner cartridges, and they have worked really well for the most part. I started to see a white line running horizontally through the printed pages, less distinct type and slightly gray pages. I lived with it for a while until I purchased additional after-market cartridges. I have now installed a new replacement toner cartridge and it is working well again though it is always a good idea to run a few pages to get rid of any stray toner marks. Two things - the plastic back piece that holds the copy pages to feed into the printer broke right away or may have been broken when I received it. I fixed it temporarily, but it now needs to be fixed again. In addition, I cannot print with toner saver mode. The print is too light. I always run it with toner saver mode off. Other than that, it has endured pages upon pages upon print, and is a much better option as compared with an inkjet printer for frequent monochrome printing. Previously I had a Samsung unit (which I refilled cheaply with toner myself - enough of that - the fine powder was worrisome - I didn't want to breathe it in - I'd recommend a face mask if you're doing this) that finally died. The Samsung had a flatbed for copying and scanning and this Brother 3-in-1 only has a copy and scanner feed. It has been great for copying as well as printing from my computer. My printers get a real workout! I would definitely recommend it for users who need to print lots of copy such as forms, application, internet articles, etc. and don't need color. The photo images on the printed pages are usually clear and distinct until the toner cartridge is nearing the end of its lifespan. The printer kept saying that it needed toner, but kept on printing. The capacity per toner cartridge is quite impressive. I only replaced it finally because the pages were getting muddy and the white line was getting bigger. I read the instructions on the after-market toner cartridge and it said to clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab to the right and left several times and then returning the tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly. Who knows, maybe this got rid of the white line?
I am now updating my review due to the fact that this printer which has been used non-stop for months seems to have stopped working. I no longer can print. There is an orange light with no indicator as to what the problem is. The printer was purchased less than a year ago - October 13, 2008. It is now August 31, 2009.
I will need to order another printer because I have so many laser cartridges and it has served me well up until now. We'll see how it goes this time. Since it was a refurbished item purchased from Computer Geeks by way of Amazon (not available as a new item from Amazon), it only has a 90 day warranty, so it is past the warranty
period.Update: June 25, 2011 I am now ordering my third refurbished MFC-8120. I use this printer as much as any small office would, but I wasn't too happy to find out that the printer is malfunctioning and I will have to order a replacement ASAP. That said, Amazon's shipping price is less expensive than that offered by ComputerGeeks directly (the seller). That may be due to the speed of the shipping.
In any case, I still like this printer, but it does have a limited lifespan unfortunately.

Canon imageCLASS MF4370DN Laser All-in-One Printer Review

Canon imageCLASS MF4370DN Laser All-in-One Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this about a week ago and have been using it ever since. I have a Mac and finding a multifunction unit that is Mac compatible hasn't been easy. This unit, the MF4370DN, works great with my Mac. The lower models, the MF4350D and the MF4150D are NOT completely Mac compatible.
I couldn't find any reviews for this item - so I will tell you everything I can about it.
I know there is some comparable Brother models out there, but have heard they surge the power in the room. I haven't tested them, but I have a Brother laser printer and it makes all the lights in my home office dim when it gets ready to print. Also that model doesn't duplex print (print/copy on both sides of the page. The MF4370DN does.)
This unit works great with my Mac - it scans, prints, copies, and receives faxes. I originally bought the Canon MF4350d which despite all the information I read is not entirely mac compatible, its scanner is not compatible with Macs, which was confirmed for me by talking with a Canon rep. It would be nice if they mentioned that on their website specs instead of wasting hours of my time and then having to drive 70 miles to return it. (I didn't buy it from Amazon because they didn't have it at the time.)
Canon support told me the MF4370dn is entirely mac compatible - just hit the Scanner button on it twice so it is in "USB SCANNING MODE."
Overall I'm pretty happy with this unit. The print quality is great, the faxing speed and quality is much faster than my old thermal fax. The copier works great. The scan quality off the glass is great. The duplexing feature works great. Unit is very, very quiet - in fact I can't hear it when it's on or sleeping.
Now I can finally get rid of three bulky devices - my fax, laser printer, and scanner, and replace it with this one unit.
Cons:
1) No software comes with this unit that allows you to create a single PDF from the Auto Document Feeder. So if I wanted to scan 10 pages through the feeder and create a single PDF it can't do it. It would create 10 different documents in your scanning program, then you would have to save each one as a PDF and use another program to create a single PDF. After hours of research I discovered Acrobat Professional can create a single PDF directly off the auto document feeder. Acrobat Professional is an expensive program at $449 which is available for Mac. I happen to have it and used it successfully to create a multipage pdf. On Acrobat Professional you go to FILE > CREATE PDF > FROM SCANNER. It worked great. But some kind of software should really be supplied from Canon that can do that. Most people are not going to have Acrobat Professional and certainly won't buy a $450 program just to be able to use a $300 device. I know there is some scanning software that comes with the unit, but it's for Windows (and not sure what it can do.)
2) Auto document feeder also is giving me some trouble - it is scanning letter size pages as legal size. So there is all this white area at the bottom of my scans. Something I will have to talk to Canon about how to fix, if possible.
3) My home phone number doubles as my fax line so I run the telephone line from the wall into the unit -- and then then out to my phone. Whenever I use my phone to make a call - the MF4370DN turns on and starts to blink "Processing Data" and a green light on the side of the unit starts to blink as well. And it stays on for the whole call. Now when I talk on the phone I gotta see this light blinking in my periphery. Kind of annoying and a waste of energy if you ask me.
4)The instructions for using the scanner were not very clear. I installed what I thought was a scanning program on a CD that came with the device. After I installed it I thenspent ages looking for the scanning application which I just installed. Turns out there is no application, instead what you are really installing is the driver. You need to use your own scanning program - I use Photoshop.

5) Every time I want to scan something I need to push the Scan button twice on the device to put it into USB scan mode. It would be nice if it would automatically detect how it was going to transmit. Also you have 1.5 to 2 minutes from when you push SCAN twice to when the machine puts itself to sleep. So a few times now I have tried to scan and couldn't because the SCAN option timed out on the machine.
6) The manual is not Mac friendly. If it was it would have saved me a couple hours figuring out most of the above. I had to call Canon 3 times or so to get the kinks worked out.
But I must say that Canon technical support is bar none the best customer support I have ever experienced. A human will pick up the phone almost immediately and you are speaking to an educated, polite, sympathetic, and a very knowledgeable person who's first language is english and they live here in the good ol' USA. A+ on that Canon.
Despite the problems settings this up - I am happy with my purchase. As I am the first person to review this I am glad to pass on what I learned to help others make an informed choice and if you happen to buy it I hope that I helped save you some time setting it up.
Thanks!

Remanufactured RadioShack PRO-163 1000-Channel Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner Review

Remanufactured RadioShack PRO-163 1000-Channel Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have enjoyed owning (and using) Radio Shack scanners since 1975 (my first was a Realistic PRO-4 crystal-controlled hand-held receiver); it's amazing to see how far they have come.
I downloaded ARC300 software and, with the USB programming cable from Radio Shack (virtually identical to the one from GRE); I had my PRO-163 programmed and up and running in just a few minutes' time, with alpha tags on the individual frequencies. What a luxury!
The audio is crisp and clear, and everything functions just as advertised. This is a refurbished unit, but it came complete with everything the factory packs with new units, and it looked brand new.
I bought this scanner as an upgrade over my PRO-433; I really wanted alpha tagging and I have become spoiled with the Signal Stalker feature already .
If you want a solid, high-performance, non-digital trunk-tracking scanner, I recommend the PRO-163 wholeheartedly.

OBD2 OBD II Diagnostic USB Cable For KKL409.1 VAG-COM 409 Review

OBD2 OBD II Diagnostic USB Cable For KKL409.1 VAG-COM 409
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered this to communicate with my late model Triumph motorcycle ECU. This is the same model as is sold on eBay from various Chinese retailers but I chose Amazon because of the improved return policy over eBay sellers. The item is fulfilled by Amazon which means I received it promptly and in secure packaging.
While the picture shows a translucent blue device, the one I received is solid black plastic, I can only assume this is due to variations in suppliers or manufacturing.
It worked on my first attempt to connect using the free TuneECU software (when using the recommended FTDI drivers not the ones supplied with the device). What can I say more than that? I haven't tested it with a hundred different vehicles, but I do know for my one application it worked perfectly on my first attempt.
EDIT: To those wishing to purchase this who are dissuaded by the negative reviews, please note: This does NOT come with any software. In fact, the driver CD it does come with is worthless. Just download the correct drivers from the internet (FTDI Serial-USB OBD drivers[...] which are direct from the manufacturer. You will still need some sort of software to interface with your car. Do a quick Google search and I can guarantee you'll find something.
Seriously, don't rate something down because you can't figure out how to use it.

Brother MFC- J410w Review

I purchased this all in one a few days back. The wireless was incredibly easy to set up. The features, such as, scanning to a file or an e-mail is great! The amount of ink that it uses is fantastic. You get about 500 pages per cartridge. So far, over all, I am very pleased with this product and would recommend it to others.

Cobra XRS 9960G Voice Alert 15-Band Radar/Laser Detector with 1.5-Inch Full-Color Display, GPS Locator, and Red Light/Speed Features Review

Cobra XRS 9960G Voice Alert 15-Band Radar/Laser Detector with 1.5-Inch Full-Color Display, GPS Locator, and Red Light/Speed Features
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is definately not a pretty radar detector. In the days of Apple design, and GPS's looking great and slim, LCD televisions, and kitchen appliances looking and functioning great; there's not a lot of excuse for poor industrial design. More on the construction in a moment.
January 8, 2010 update. The Railroad signal also works, it went off near a railroad track. The Emergency Vehicle alarm has gone off a lot lately, for police cars and Ambulances. Very nice.
The display has gotten a distinct burn in for the speed display (I'm testing Cobra's warranty repair service with this - January 23, 2010 - a brand new core unit arrived quickly, Cobra made good on the warranty, no questions asked). The display does not work at all if you leave the detector in the cold, around freezing. Once the unit warms up it finally works, but it will be an ugly orange for a long time. And see the comments about getting a bean bag mount - the suction cups do not work at all in the cold.
SOFTWARE update - Cobra now offers 64 bit for Vista and XP software. It only took them 6 months to deliver the update. Boo on Cobra for pitiful software support. They get really bad marks for their inability to support their device. Follow the install directions very carefully.
October 10, 2009 update. The Emergency Vehicle alarm finally went off. Another that made me almost jump out of my skin, the noise is a lot like a police siren. A police car was pulling somebody over with siren going. Well before I could hear the siren, the alarm went off on the screen. I had already seen the lights before the alarm went off. If a police car is equiped with a special transmitter, the Cobra will go off.
September 26, 2009 update. Laser detector finally went off. About made me jump out of my skin. The sound is kind of Star Wars, crazy buzzy sound. The goofiest icon come up, its an image of a gun with a laser sight on it. But the good news - it works. Definately works just fine. I've also had some fun with this unit, the Chicago area has a ton of construction with threatened photo radar speed enforcement. The amazing thing, if they ever turn on those radar guns that are out there right now, Chicago will make a ton of money. This unit warns for those guns a long ways in advance, and it beeps like insanity whenever I am on top of one. This thing really works.
June 2, 2009 Tech Support update. Well this is not the fastest company I have ever met. Web support via the web form is pitiful at best. Twice I entered the exact same information and never got a response over a 1 week time period. I finally used an email address (it's buried in an advertisement looking thing on the FAQ's) and got a response within two hours of their normal business hours. And I got a nasty gram from somebody telling me to relax, tech support would get back to me (after over 7 work days, I lost all hope), they did receive all three of my emails. Frankly, a really poor showing on their part. God help you if you need tech support from this company. The FAQ section for the radar detectors is just awful. Pretty well worthless.
Back to Original Review:
The really great news, this radar detector flat out works. It works well. I'm amazed at how well it works. Photo, Ka, X, and Caution Zones - saw them all, they all work just great thank you very much. Haven't seen a laser alert, emergency vehicles, or a Railroad crossing alert yet; but I'd have every reason to believe those will work when they are really there.
The good - 1/2 mile down the road, Ka chirped on, the lovely lady said Ka Alert, and two balls of signal strength. Sure enough, a 1/2 mile later down the raod, a policeman with radar pulled somebody over. Pretty darn good proof the unit can detect radar.
Unboxing - I've posted some pictures of unboxing. It's actually some pretty decent packaging and got my heart rate up just a bit. You see, I used to be addicted to radar detectors. And then Laser came along, and I lost interest, (I'd already been through X band, then get a new one that would do Ka, enough already). Well that whole world has settled down now.
What is in the box? This funky looking radar detector with a big honking screen on the back end of it. And this really hideous half arm, half wart hanging off the side of the body; the GPS receiver. A coiled power cord. A goofy looking female mini-USB to male USB cable. A really crummy cheap window suction cup mount. A chunk of velcro. And an instruction book bag.
The installation. Ouch. The first step, you have to register the GPS and update the database. If you use the wrong model number to register the GPS you'll be ripped off your lifetime Aura database updates. Make sure you use the XRS 9960G model number - not the number on the radar detector. And you have to input the serial number off the little dinky GPS receiver. Once registered, you then have to download and install a little piece of software that will live on your computer forever - it's called RDA GPSL-55 (you got me how they came up with that gorgeous name). Then you are supposed to plug in the USB cable and the GPS receiver. Now if you have Vista, the website says you are on your own. With XP they give you step by step instructions. Well, the best deal, if you have Vista or XP 64 Bit - don't even bother. The software / driver will not work at all, nothing, nada. So you have to find a 32 bit machine to do this update. My Aspire One netbook did the job. Then you have to remove the GPS when you start up the RDA GPSL-55 software, and you have to enter the GPS serial number. Once all that craziness is done, you might get lucky and the GPS will update with it's brand spanking new database. Mine finally did after three tries.
So software set up - just not cool at all. Forget 64 Bit operating systems. And forget about any kind of real live software support on the Cobra website; it just doesn't exist at all.
So now that the little reciever is updated, I installed this in the car. Cobra needs to take a lesson from Garmin, or the GPS industry, about car mounts for devices. They shipped the cheapest piece of garbage to hang this on your windshield. The metal is nothing to bend. The suction cups are exactly that, suction cups that are very hard to push on or remove. So, bottom line this thing looks like garbage hanging from the windshield.
The power cord is way too short. I had to stretch is a long ways to work in my Buick Rendezvous (I know a radar magnet) - if those suction cups ever let go, this unit is flying to the back of the bus quickly. The Mercedes was a little better.
There's one other critical design flaw. The socket for the GPS receiver is a standard mini-USB connector; cheap and not exactly super secure. Definately not an automotive type connection. The power socket is right beside that GPS socket. The GPS almost covers up the power socket, and when you stretch the power cord, it stresses the GPS connection. First time around, the GPS wasn't seated right because the power cord pulled it out.
Now the good stuff. Power this up, and you are greeted by one of the nicest female voices I've heard on an electronic device in a long time. And then you get to look at the display. Well Cobra could have spent maybe five more dollars on this display. It is super low res, the icons are really goofy looking and super clunky. For some unknown reason, they love how much electricity the unit is getting, there's this huge battery in the default display that tells you 14.7V, or whatever is going in. I would haver rather seen the speed displayed.
Customization through the menus is not super intuitive, there's only 4 buttons to work with. They don't always do exactly what I thought they should, a minor annoyance.
Now on to the testing. About 1/4 mile from a camera monitored intersection, the displayed turned to a camera with a green donut, and the Cobra lady said Photo Alert. A bit closer, and an arrow appeared at the top. Closer and the donut got larger and yellow. Closer still, the donut turned red, by that time I was pretty much at the edge of the intersection. This was pretty cool. Worked every single time.
I found a policeman staked out on a road, doubled back and got the Ka alert mentioned at the top of the review. Given the two level signal strength, it wasn't a false alarm. And the fact that he pulled somebody over, well it was real.
The Caution zones is kind of interesting. It's apparently areas where a lot of accidents have been reported. Sure enough, Caution came on with an exclamation point in the middle of the donut, and Cobra lady told me Caution Alert. The color change was exactly like the Camera alert. The two that came up were in front of a school at a very busy intersection. And the second was in front of a hospital.
False alarms. It did a pretty darn good job rejecting them. O'Hare airport is notorious for heavy duty false alarms everywhere. I got X and Kz alarms, but all were only one ball signal strength. The other great thing this unit does, once the alarm is set, you get the voice plus a tone. Then you get tone. And if the signal doesn't get stronger, the tone gets quieter; but the X or Ka radar gun icon stays lit up. It's a really great way to work.
Multiple alarms - got a caution and an X band alarm at once. The Caution stayed huge and the X band radar showed up on the screen. So both were there to see.
Highway driving. Well this is a bit strange and will take some getting used to. Those Caution and Photo alarms are all based on GPS coordinates data. When you travel along a highway, sometimes you will pass near one of those areas. Well you have to look closely at the icon for the direction the arrow is pointing. If it's...Read more›

This is the best printer/copier I have ever travelled with. It is lightweight and I can copy from books, as well as, individual sheets of paper. The ink lasted as long as any other inkjet I've had and longer than most. This is a basic unit which does what intended for an economical price. It is not designed for high volumne use, for that you need laser.

I purchased this item because it was recommended by our local TV station. They have a program called "Let Bill buy it and try it". He went to the extreme of using a person to buy items on the internet and then had a computer guy hack in and get the information on her card. Even on secure sites he was able to get all the information on her card. When she used the swipe he was only able to get the minimal information that is unable to be used.

HP Officejet Pro 8500A Wireless e-All-in-One (CM755A#B1H) Review

HP Officejet Pro 8500A Wireless e-All-in-One (CM755A#B1H)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Received as part of the Amazon Vine reviewer program, the HP Officejet Pro 8500A is a wireless, all-in-one (printer, fax, scanner, copier, web) office tool. It uses the current touchscreen technology to offer the user a way to fax, scan, copy and print without the use of a computer directly attached to it.
SET-UP:
Once I unboxed this beast (it's quite a bit heavier and larger than my previous printer: HP Officejet 6310 All-in-One Printer), it took a few minutes to check the box contents and untape parts that were immobilized as part of packaging.
A very basic (10) step sheet with pictures and minimal directions directs you how to install the two print heads, four ink cartridges, the HP automatic two-sided printing accessory (duplexer) and load the paper. It also shows you for PC or Mac computers how to hook up the printer via a usb cord, ethernet (internet cord) or via a wireless home network (found in the Getting Started Guide).
Once you power up the printer it takes approximately 20 minutes to go through a series of checks prior to asking you if you want to 'update'. As I'd already established a wireless connection with the printer by following the prompts on the touchscreen and entering my home network's security code, I had it do an update which took about 5 minutes. All in all, the 25-30 minutes the all-in-one spent getting ready for use was no big deal. It took me about 45 minutes to get it set-up prior to that time, and I'm fairly savy about such things. The directions that come with it rely heavily on drawings and had to be referred to frequently - at least for me.
So a little over an hour into set-up I installed the software on my primary computer. This took about 10 minutes. Later I also went to the HP site and got the very basic drivers (a 64MB download) for the printer to install on 2 laptops (Vista 64-bit and Windows 7), 1 netbook (Windows XP) and 2 desktops (Vista 64-bit and Windows XP). All the computers installed the drivers quickly and easily, and once installed printed wirelessly off the 8500A. I was amazed with that one... no hic-ups with drivers?!
I also went to iTunes and got a free app: HP iPrint Photo. Once loaded on your iTouch or iPhone you can use it to send photos or documents to print to this printer, or any HP printer (I'm assuming other non-HP printers won't work with this app) connected to your network. It worked with both the 8500A and the 6300 (hardwired to my router).
Between the unboxing, untaping, installing of ink and printer heads, the all-in-one's auto set-up and software installation, getting this one up and running took about 1.5 hours. That's much longer than most printers I've wrestled with in the past, but I did take my time and gently worked each step.
The only device I did not get linked to the 8500A was my phone: Nokia E71 Unlocked Phone with 3.2 MP Camera, 3G, Media Player, GPS with Free Voice Navigation, Wi-Fi, and MicroSD Slot--U.S. Version with Warranty (White). I tried multiple times to get it to recognize the printer, but thus far, nothing. I'll continue to work on it.
FEATURES per the box:
+Printing speeds equivalent to laser printers (35ppm black and 34ppm color - max).
+Water resistant-inks.
+Wireless networking.
+35 page automatic document feeder (ADF)
+Automatic two-sided printing; saving time and paper
+4800 x 4800 dpi, 48-bit color scanning
+App printing via touchscreen - print directly from the web without a computer
+Printing from anywhere via mobile devices using HP ePrint (the printer has its own email addresss)
+Front panel usb port and memory card slots for digital cameras
+Fax to network folder, to PC and PC Fax Send.
++ Eco-friendly solution, offering 50% lower cost per page than other similar all-in-one printers.
"What does all this mean?" Ideally, if you buy this one you'll get a wireless printer, scanner, copier, fax machine, that may cost you a bit less to print the same number of pages with another printer and gives you laser printer quality and speed. At least in theory, but time will tell if that pans out.
What I liked about it...
+The machine is good-looking. Sleek, glossy black with a color touch screen.
+The touch screen itself is small, but responsive and quick.
+It can be placed anywhere in your home or office as long as your wireless network connection is adequate.
+The flatbed scanner allows for legal sized documents.
+You can scan your ID - getting both sides at the same time on one page - very cool!
+The print quality is excellent.
+The print speed is fast.
+Connectivity with my iTouch via HP's app.
+Scanning is very quick and the quality is excellent.
+Printer drivers installed quickly and easily via HP.com download on all my computers running Vista 64-bit, XP Home and Windows 7 - without a hitch!
+You can copy or print without a PC attached and 'on', via the touch screen.
+Touchscreen animation will show you how to clear a paper jam, step-by-step. Had one...watched the little show and fixed it.
What I disliked about it...
- The machine took a long time to set-up for initial use, and it goes through a lot of checks (for about 30-60 seconds) before it can be used if powered off and turned back on.
- Makes a lot of noise while it's printing! Thankfully...it prints quickly, and it isn't as noisy while scanning, copying or faxing.
-The size is a bit bigger than I'd hoped for and it weighs about 25 pounds, but it does a lot and 'compact' was not one of its selling points.
- The printing of photos is nice, but leaves regular paper soggy. You need to use HP Premium Presentation Paper or HP Premium Photo Paper, glossy (100 sheets, 4 x 6-inch borderless) to get the right look and feel.
- Time will tell if ink costs are less or not, but to replace all the cartridges at one time will be a bit expensive. HP 940xl Black, Regular Capacity Cyan, Magenta, Yellow Not overly expensive when compared with other HP ink cartridges, so I wonder where the claim '50% lower cost per page' comes from?
-HP included software has some unnecessary stuff on it that loads on your computer if you're not aware enough of what to 'uncheck' to stop it before you install the software. HP is notorious for this type of thing and can be very irksome.
-The HP Apps installed on the machine are minimal at this time. You can print off daily news stories from Yahoo, weather reports, puzzles, recipes, etc..., but for me, at least right now, the apps are more fluff than substance. You have to go online to do your settings and establish an 'email address' for your printer, instead of using the touchscreen to do all of it. Sort of defeating the purpose of the screen and wireless capabilities - at least for setup.
-HP Apps failed to work every time. When I tried to get a daily summary for Yahoo, it couldn't retrieve the info. I went to the HP ePrintCenter online, and it said my printer was offline. I refreshed it and it still didn't work. I then turned off my printer and turned it back on. It was then recognized online and printed via the app within 5 seconds. This was after I had setup my account and HP said all was well. **A few bugs need to be worked out, but this is probably a network/software glitch and may be just with the Yahoo app.
My CONCLUSION:
It's a good e-All-in-One with cool web and file transfer possibilities, but a noisy printer. The cost is a bit high for a wireless all-in-one, but the web features and eco-friendly printing may be worth the price boost.
I'm excited to have a wireless printer that installed so easily on my home network and can be placed anywhere in my home. I love the scanner, and look forward to scanning old photos more quickly than my old scanner.
I also like the ability to send photos from my iTouch or iPhone to the printer wirelessly. The touchscreen was a great addition and it works well. It's a stand-alone device in many ways, and doesn't need to be tethered to a computer to copy or fax, which I like too.
Overall, the Officejet Pro 8500A Wireless e-All-in-One seems to be a solidly built office tool that will appeal to home office users and families who want its many functions and a lower cost per page.
NOTE RE: Nokia E71 phones, printing wirelessly...

After much research and little assistance I lucked out and figured out the right configuration for printing from the Nokia phone. In your 'printers' on your phone, set up a new printer using these settings.

Printer: any name...
Driver: HP Mobile Printing
Bearer: LPR
Access point: make sure this is whatever network name your wireless printer is currently using.
Host: this is to be set to your printer's IP address.
User: also known as 'hostname'.
Queue: I put in the name of my network (SSID).
Printer model: 'officejet' printers

I can't print using the Ovi store's HP iPrint Photo app, but the above stated worked for me on about a 3 second delay to the printer. This fix may also work for other Nokia smartphones and HP printers.

I was looking for a set of headphones to use with my iPod while mowing the lawn. I had used a set of headphones that hook over the ears, but I had to turn the volume up too high to hear over the noise of the mower.
I looked around at a lot of sites (including high-end audiophile sites) and Koss was often suggested as a good company with good products. Their no-questions guarantee was often cited as one of the reasons Koss is a good company.
I decided to try the QZ-5 headphones because they are relatively inexpensive.
As soon as I tried them on, I was impressed. They blocked out a lot of sound without even having them attached to a sound source. I couldn't hear the TV or the phone ring with the headphones on.
When I tried them while mowing I knew I had a winner. I could leave the volume level at the same level I would use if I wasn't mowing the lawn. The noise of the mower was not eliminated, but it was reduced significantly. It became a low hum in the background instead of a roar that overwhelmed the music.
Comfort wise, they are good. I wear glasses and these work well with them. They don't pinch like the over-ear model did. It takes me about two hours to mow my lawn and they don't become uncomfortable during that time.
The sound is good enough that I plan on using the headphones to watch TV without the sound disturbing my wife.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the performance of these headphones.
