So far this laser has been great. i was looking for a laser that printed on both sides and network ready. The samsung filled the bill at a very attractive price (can be has for $160 with instant rebate). It was a breeze to setup on Mac OS 10.5 as a network printer. Bonjour found it and just use the Samsung driver. Also since it has native postscript support you can use the Generic Postscript Driver with it as well. Works fine under 10.5 that way as well. Printing speed is awesome, and printing on both sides is great. the smaller form factor is great too.

Brother MFC-8120 3-in-1 USB/Parallel Multifunction Laser Printer/Copier/Scanner (Refurbished) Review

Brother MFC-8120 3-in-1 USB/Parallel Multifunction Laser Printer/Copier/Scanner (Refurbished)

I have used this monochrome laser printer/copier/scanner for over a year now everyday for very frequent printing for office at-home work. It may have been a refurbished model since I recall it was fairly cheap. It has been reliable and fast. Since I purchased the printer/copier/scanner, I have used after-market toner cartridges - either refilled Brother cartridges or non-OEM replacement toner cartridges, and they have worked really well for the most part. I started to see a white line running horizontally through the printed pages, less distinct type and slightly gray pages. I lived with it for a while until I purchased additional after-market cartridges. I have now installed a new replacement toner cartridge and it is working well again though it is always a good idea to run a few pages to get rid of any stray toner marks. Two things - the plastic back piece that holds the copy pages to feed into the printer broke right away or may have been broken when I received it. I fixed it temporarily, but it now needs to be fixed again. In addition, I cannot print with toner saver mode. The print is too light. I always run it with toner saver mode off. Other than that, it has endured pages upon pages upon print, and is a much better option as compared with an inkjet printer for frequent monochrome printing. Previously I had a Samsung unit (which I refilled cheaply with toner myself - enough of that - the fine powder was worrisome - I didn't want to breathe it in - I'd recommend a face mask if you're doing this) that finally died. The Samsung had a flatbed for copying and scanning and this Brother 3-in-1 only has a copy and scanner feed. It has been great for copying as well as printing from my computer. My printers get a real workout! I would definitely recommend it for users who need to print lots of copy such as forms, application, internet articles, etc. and don't need color. The photo images on the printed pages are usually clear and distinct until the toner cartridge is nearing the end of its lifespan. The printer kept saying that it needed toner, but kept on printing. The capacity per toner cartridge is quite impressive. I only replaced it finally because the pages were getting muddy and the white line was getting bigger. I read the instructions on the after-market toner cartridge and it said to clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab to the right and left several times and then returning the tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly. Who knows, maybe this got rid of the white line?
I am now updating my review due to the fact that this printer which has been used non-stop for months seems to have stopped working. I no longer can print. There is an orange light with no indicator as to what the problem is. The printer was purchased less than a year ago - October 13, 2008. It is now August 31, 2009.
I will need to order another printer because I have so many laser cartridges and it has served me well up until now. We'll see how it goes this time. Since it was a refurbished item purchased from Computer Geeks by way of Amazon (not available as a new item from Amazon), it only has a 90 day warranty, so it is past the warranty
period.Update: June 25, 2011 I am now ordering my third refurbished MFC-8120. I use this printer as much as any small office would, but I wasn't too happy to find out that the printer is malfunctioning and I will have to order a replacement ASAP. That said, Amazon's shipping price is less expensive than that offered by ComputerGeeks directly (the seller). That may be due to the speed of the shipping.
In any case, I still like this printer, but it does have a limited lifespan unfortunately.
