Optoma EP-771 3000 Lumen Multimedia Data Projector Review

Optoma EP-771 3000 Lumen Multimedia Data Projector
Average Reviews:

Great Projector as a whole, but shipped missing pieces. Was told unused, but it was used and a return. Not an Optoma problem, more a Amazon.com Warehouse issue. Projector was good enough to keep regardless, but becareful of warehouse purchases that are labeled opened, but not used. Fingerprints over the lightbulb, open cord packages, missing computer cord and scratches on the case tell me different. Still overall, projector is a great purchase for those wanting a nice home theater. Do not count on the sound as your only sound source.
Save money on a screen by using reflective white road paint and purchasing extra glass beads to sprinkle on top; figure about 10 pounds of beading per gallon of paint (the ratio is actually what they call airport grade). Used a recycled papermachine wetend forming wire, or you could use oversized muslin stretched over a wooden frame (for muslin -seal prior to painting using a mixture of 50% Elmer's glue/ 50% water to size muslin and dry) and painted three gallons reflective road paint and then add the glass beads for the maximum 25ft projector distance (about a 200 inch wide by 100 inches tall screen). AMAZING Results for an outside, backyard, waterproof screen for less than $[...]!

Math Advantage 2006 Review

Math Advantage 2006
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, my background:
I'm a software developer who also used to work as a math teacher at the middle and high school levels. I have a very bright middle-school-aged daughter who's often bored in her math class, and is starting to show interest in learning some math material on her own, rather than waiting for her slow-as-the-slowest-student "honors" math class. (Yeah, that kind of bright.)
I looked around at various math-teaching computer programs. Math Advantage seemed to be one of the few prominent names in the field, the brand new 2006 edition was just coming out, and the price seemed pretty good considered how much material it covered, so I decided to give it a shot.
Oops.
First annoying aspect: the "ten core subject areas" come on ten separate CDs. Each CD contains its own separate program that must be individually installed. Why? Didn't it occur to anyone at Encore that they could write one program with a different data disc for each subject, so we could install the one program and switch between data discs as needed? (That's how every multi-disc game program I've seen works.) Or just load the whole lot onto a single DVD?
Okay, so I grumble a bit and install 10 CDs. Well, nine. I got tired after nine. The tenth one can wait. So I now have what appear to be seven core math programs and two "bonus" programs crowding my Start menu, with one "bonus" program left to install later.
The seven core programs are Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus & Calculus, and Statistics. Sounds like a pretty thorough line-up. So, I start the Pre-Algebra program. My screen goes black, and I get a dialog box informing me that I need to "Please check that 'Math Advantage 2003 Pre Algebra CD' is in your CD-ROM drive.'" (The "2003" on the message causes me to wonder how much of this 2006 program is a mere re-copy of the 2003 version.) After some puttering, I determine that to run the program, I have to insert the appropriate CD, exit the installer dialog when it appears, and *then* run the program from the Start menu. Ridiculous.
The graphics are cheap, and only use a small fraction of a mere 800x600 screen (further suggesting an older design), but okay, it runs. The opening menu is initially confusing - a big wheel sporting prominent-but-unclickable icons with clickable text labels - but provides entry to "Tutorial", "Examination", "Game", "Report Card", and a few other things.

The Tutorial interface is dry, and the audio voice reads the displayed text and questions (presumably in case your math-hungry student is illiterate). Same for the Exam; functional, but very dull. The Game is a very simplistic steer-the-spark-on-the-wires game that could have been played on an older cell phone, hardly worthy of a remotely modern computer, and seemed to have very little to do with any math concepts. The Interactive Zone has various lessons within, many extremely simple and dull, and some that were just simple lectures with simple graphics, but none involved much interactivity.
I ran several of the other discs (Geometry, Trigonometry, etc.) and found very much the same comments -- and, in fact, the exact same cheap graphics and dull style -- applied to all of 'em.
In the end, this felt like one of those cheap math workbooks you find at a discount educational materials store had been pasted onto my computer screen with a soft voice to read everything to me. If you consider that each such workbook might cost about $4, and there are ten of 'em in here, then the price might seem about right. But somehow, I expected a *lot* more out of a $40 math education computer software package that was supposedly constructed for 2006. What I got appears to be a re-repackaged software that's *at least* a few years old, not at all well designed to hold the attention of young math students, nor any more effective at teaching them math skills than any cheap and simple math workbook.
Overall, I am extremely disappointed. The programs work (after some effort), and they do seem to include a reasonable degree of material (math lessons and problems and such), but the presentation is uniformly and mindlessly dull, and there is nothing to spark or grab the interest of the average young math student -- even if they weren't already jaded by the plethora of infinitely snazzier computer games and other software packages common today.
There's also a strange bug related to its use of computer memory, which other reviewers of this and past editions (yep, it's apparently been in there for years) have described well.
By the way, I never did install that tenth disc. And I'm uninstalling the nine now...

I wouldn't really comment or leave a review on any products, but I have to leave my review for this product because I don't want anyone else waste money or time(If you are going to return).
I've purchased lots of products on Amazon, and there were Good products and OK products. But this one is a garbage.
It had scratches on four sides(orange scratches)
Inside the USB socket it had a brown color in it, so it looks like someone used it.
and around the screws there are some little broken plastic around the each screws.
and once I put it in the socket it breaks. How awesome...
NEVER EVER BUY THIS PRODUCT. I'm warning you guys rightn ow.
sorryy for my English.

~~~THE STORY, AMOUNG OTHER THINGS~~~~~
It is a nice phone, I took my 5 star review down after dealing with Tiger-direct the company that sells the phone but I can't resubmit another truer review. Anyway, this is the only format I can speak out, to let others know. The phone has nice feature's but the package for the phone doesn't come with a USB cord or a headphone set, the headphone set is a need in order for the FM radio to work. In an email that took 5 days from them to respond to my email, they said it only includes with the phone: User Manual, Rear Cover, Wall Charger, Battery. That is it.
For the headphones, to bad??? For the USB cord, I have to call 1866-603-0640...another company...for the USB cord, what about the headphones??? Oh and a sorry at the end of my email by, Maureen...customer service from tiger direct-amazon. I think they suck, My ratings at this POINT IS a "2".
So, everyone email them before you buy from them (tiger-direct) even if you have to wait 5 days at least you will know what you hard earned money pays for. After this experience with buying a cell phone from Amazon and Ebay, I will just buy from now on my cell phone provider, I seem to get ripped off by the folks who sell me parts to the phone with 'not' the complete package. Buyer BEWARE..
Another add-in, for what it is worth....
Oh, I want to add my daughter whose 16, this was a Christmas present...which I let her open early...the phone can't receive or send picture text either. Terrible seeing, that I have unlimited picture and text on the family plan, I have T-mobile, also, the 5-fav's doesn't work either, no biggie, I kind-of knew that, just making it known if you have T-mobile...Anyway--PLEASE BUYER BEWARE, about everything else, I've stated!!!!!
---TigerDirect SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also, I've ordered a camera from them as well "a palaroid" the SD card doesn't work either...really sad these folks. Sadly they don't care once they get your money. I haven't returned the items because I've already return another item through someone else. It cost me $10 and change and me burning time and gas..and a headache. All I can do is post and hope to help someone else.
God Bless..two-thumbs down for TIGER-DIRECT.
Dell 946 All In One Inkjet Printer (Fax/Scan/Copy/Print) Review
Dell 946 All In One Inkjet Printer (Fax/Scan/Copy/Print)
Average Reviews:
This printer bites! I had a brand new 946 all in one printer from dell and not quite after a year it stopped printing. It started with the black ink not printing, I checked the Dell tech site and the remedy was to replace the ink cartridge since the black ink was probably faulty. (Also just a note while browsing on their tech forums for printer solutions A LOT of people had the same problem) I did this (as did several people on the forum) didn't work!
I checked with tech support again they had me reinstall the drivers I did this (as did several people on the forum) didn't work!
Now my color ink won't print. And it isn't just the print that won't work, the copy doesn't work either.
Unfortunately my warranty had expired so I wasn't able to demand a replacement. I really don't like this printer! Just a forwarning about the printer.
I have purchased two of these. I have 2 home built cnc's running these controllers with Mack3.
As the previous poster stated, there is no documentation with the card.
However, a quick trip to their web site, and you can download a pdf that covers everything you need to know about the card.
I prefer this card over many others because it does not required a separate power supply to run the card.
Xerox Phaser 6115MFP/D Multi-Function Color Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax Review
Xerox Phaser 6115MFP/D Multi-Function Color Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)
One of the reasons I purchased this device is that it is a Xerox.
The machine itself is good quality. The chassis is heavy, and, the glass, feeder, document trays, etc., are all of reasonably good quality.
One of the real plusses to buying Xerox is that a real, English speaking human being answers the phone when you have a technical question. Their technical support is excellent (compared to other manufacturers like HP). This alone makes it worth the while to purchase Xerox.
I had a problem installing the TWAIN driver for this. In a half an hour I had a knowledgable technician on the line through their 800 number. The problem was resolved in ten to twenty minutes with proper support documentation and downloads available on line.
Why only 3 stars? This is one of the most difficult MFP devices (I have four of them) I have had to operate. It is not as difficult as an HP, but, it is, like an HP, so touchy as to require constant paper unjamming, constant references to the manual for error codes, constant power downs to reboot to get it out of indecipherable things it doesn't like about the ink supply, or the paper supply, or the paper adjustment, or the hundreds of software switches necessary to get it to print.
Like many devices out there, this one has no mercy on the user. If you don't do everything exactly right, you will end up either spending hours with the manual trying to figure out the error codes and how to fix it, or, you will spend 5 minutes per task powering it down to clear the error codes and get it back to step one so you can use it. Five minutes of powering down and powering back up just to make a copy is grossly unacceptable in any office.
THANK GOD it has an on off switch so that you can back out of its many, many, many error situations.
The printing quality was excellent, but, on envelopes, it so badly creased the envelopes running it through the rollers that we couldn't use it for printing envelopes as they looked too beat up after being through the machine for ordinary printing.
After about a year of very, very light use, the machine displayed a "service call" error message and completely stopped functioning.
Just try to find someone to fix one of these. There isn't anyone qualified, and, often the parts and labor can be as much as a new machine itself.
It is now a throwaway sitting in my office because we can't get anyone to fix it.
MANY bucks down the drain.
Nevertheless, because of the technical support I bought another Xerox 6180 MFP and, keep your fingers crossed, so far it is working fine.
I would stay away from this model because of its unreliability, counter-intuitive operating procedures, and, the incredible rarity of people who can fix it.
Average Reviews:
When we remodeled our bedroom we moved our TiVo into the closet. Running the HDMI cable to the TV from the TiVo was easy - figuring out how to get the remote was a little harder. We have aTiVoSlide remote control which works via Bluetooth: a Bluetooth receiver connects to the TiVo via USB cable. I needed to be able to get the receiver out of the closet and into the main bedroom, ideally behind the television. The maximum length of a USB cable is 10-15 feet, depending on the device, which was too short to reach from the TiVo to the television.
The first solution I tried was a Tripp Lite repeater cable, which is unpowered. The Bluetooth receiver appeared to work just fine with it: a blue light on it illuminated and the light blinked in response to button presses on the remote, just as it should. The commands, however, were not received by the TiVo. The repeater cable was able to boost the signal enough to reach from the TiVo to the receiver, but the receiver didn't have enough strength to send the commands back to the TiVo through the cable.
While I looked for another solution I connected the receiver to a 6' long USB extension cable, just to get the receiver out of the closet so it could receive commands from the remote. This worked but not very well. The commands were received by the TiVo but there was a delay so the response was very laggy. In addition, not all the commands were received by the TiVo which made it very hard to control the DVR.
Clearly a powered solution was required. Though this product didn't have any reviews when I ordered it I didn't have many options. I've used Cables Unlimited cables before so at least I was familiar with the brand.
Amazon's product page is a little light on information for this product and there are a couple of critical pieces of information which should be on the page. The product page at the Cables Unlimited site has more information. First, this extender is only USB 1.1 compliant, not USB 2.0 compliant. Second, only one device can be connected to this extender so putting a hub at the end of it won't work (according to Cables Unlimited, at least).
This extender couldn't be any easier to set up, which is good because the instructions consist of a single diagram. There are 3 pieces to this product: the sending and receiving units and a power supply. The sending unit is a small box labeled "local". It has a USB connection that plugs into your computer (or TiVo in my case) and a port for an Ethernet cable, so it has a male USB and a female Ethernet connection. The receiving unit is labeled "remote" and has a port to plug the remote USB device into (in my case the TiVo Bluetooth receiver) and an Ethernet port, so it has a female USB and a female Ethernet connection. The power supply plugs into the remote end as well.
I plugged the "local" box into the TiVo and connected a 35' Ethernet cable to it. Into the remote end I plugged the other end of the Ethernet cable, the power supply, and the Bluetooth receiver. That was it. The receiver came to life, the TiVo recognized it, and everything just worked. Not only did the remote work, it worked great. There was no lag, no dropped commands. It was as if the Bluetooth receiver was connected directly to the TiVo. I've got no complaints about how well this extender works or how easy it is to install.
My only complaint is the power supply. It doesn't plug all the way into the "remote" box - about 1/4" of the plug is left exposed. Where I have the "remote" box set up this isn't a problem but it could be an issue depending on where it's set up. The USB cable doesn't fit all the way into the "remote" box either. Thatt's just sloppy design so I docked the product a star. I've uploaded a picture to show the gaps.
Overall, though, this extender works great. Powering the remote box really made the difference. As responsive as the TiVo remote is I think this extender could be used for mouse, keyboard, or even a gaming controller, as long as they only need a USB 1.1 connection.
MS2-IDK27 MICROSCANNER2 Remote Identifier Kit 2-7 Review
MS2-IDK27 MICROSCANNER2 Remote Identifier Kit 2-7
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)
Frankly, I'm bothered by Amazon's picture, which I hope they change soon. The current (as I write this) picture shows the entire MS2-KIT MICROSCANNER2 Professional Kit with a lot of components included in the case. Now, I figured it would not include the Microscanner2 device (biggest yellow/blue item), but I (wrongly) assumed it would include everything else, including the probe (long yellow item). But all you get is the six small remote identifiers in a ziploc bag. No case, probe, documentation or anything.
Assuming you have a Microscanner2, you can plug these items into multiple outlets, and when you plug the Microscanner2 into a patch panel port, it will show you the ID number printed on the remote identifier. That is a much faster way to identify what patch port goes where. But the price seems expensive for just the remote identifiers. I was willing to pay that assuming I was getting the tonner. So I'm pretty unhappy with Amazon right now.
So if you did what I did, and thought you could buy this kit and a Microscanner2 and end up with the same contents as the MS2-KIT MICROSCANNER2 Professional Kit, you will be sad. Avoid this and get the MS2-KIT MICROSCANNER2 Professional Kit instead. I'm feeling pretty screwed right now...
Panasonic KX-FHD331 Plain Paper Fax Review
Panasonic KX-FHD331 Plain Paper Fax
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)
I bought this item largely based on the two 5-star reviews on this site and of course its very low price. I'm now feeling a bit disappointed.
After setting the machine up, I discovered there are a couple of things I'm not crazy about. First, the unit uses thermal heat transfer, so you need to buy "ink film" instead of ink cartridges. An entire page worth of film gets used every time you receive a fax or make a copy, regarless of whether the page is BLANK or totally BLACK. This can add up to a lot of waste. Sometimes I like to make a copy of something that doesn't take up a whole page, like a shopping receipt, and I'm paying for a whole black page with this machine. (Faxes work out to about ten cents a copy, depending of course on what you pay for ink film refills.)
Second, the used ink film serves as a negative of every fax you've received and every copy you've made. If you receive anything confidential or sensitive, you're going to want to be careful about how you dispose of your used ink film because you can read every letter printed on the film.
Third, the page-feed mechanism used for scanning documents seems incapable of handling anything other than a regular sheet of paper. I have tried several times to copy a 3x5 inch shopping receipt with this unit, and so far I haven't succeeded. My old unit could handle that task easily.
I'm left to consider returning the unit for one that can handle smaller pieces of paper and that doesn't use the ink film technology.
In fairness, I should also point out the things I do like about the unit. An advantage of the ink film is that it is actually water-resistant, unlike the ink supplied in some cartridges (like the one my old machine used). The set-up for this machine, while not as simple as some units, was doable within a few minutes. Note however that I didn't like the fact that I had to enter a two digit code from the manual to set up some features -- I couldn't just flip through menus to get what I wanted. There are lots of options for setting up distinctive ring tone answering, and you can choose the number of rings before fax pick-up (between 1 and 3 rings, inclusive). It's a small machine which is nice for small workspaces. You can choose three different ring types (though they are all pretty similar) and you can alter volume both for rings and for the handset.
Bottom line: this affordable machine will be great for some users, but unfortunately I'm not one of them.
