I was wary about getting a network multifunction (5 in 1-fax, scan, print, copy, memory card reader) machine for my office fax, but this hardware profile provided just enough features to be truly useful, yet still take up a minimal amount of desktop space. Although very similar to the Brother MFC-5440CN, I thought it ideal for lighter usage in a crowded space. The unit is not rugged enough for a 'dirty, dusty, banging around' kind of office, yet it's light enough to carry home for occasional use. The included features will astound you-I'll list the ones I've found so far below. Discover more, and write about them in you own review ;-)
The network capability of this product is absolutely unparalleled-for small multiplatform networks that do not use fancy network protocols. It really does scan to, print from, and fax from any computer on the network!
Installation was so easy it should define the standard for SOHO. Please note that you'll need to buy additional cables (Cat5E internet & USB) for this to work.
The software is perfect - both Macintosh OS (9.2.2, 10.2.8, 10.3.9) and Windows (2000, XP) work right out of the CD. Their software logic is a bit odd for most Mac users, but they pull off the multiplatform demand flawlessly.
Print quality is exactly as expected for a Brother inkjet. I would not use this product to replace the capabilities of a networked laser or photo printer, but it can 'make do' quite well, yet I'd be careful not to expect a high page throughput from this printer. The best part is the inkjet cartridges are very inexpensive (shares with other Brother models), and since the print head will wear out just when lower priced models arrive with more options in the future, it is just perfect for small office start-ups. If you find you're spending too much on cartridges (they sell a nearly double-sized capacity black refill) then your business is likely generating enough money for a networked duplex-capable laser printer anyway.
The memory card interface is nice for those who want to upload files this way, but I'd think twice about using it as a true photo printer.
Scanning is better (faster, clearer) than most inexpensive paper fed scanners, and more convenient than a flatbed. If you absolutely need to do both, then go for the MFC-5440CN (but don't expect duplex capability). I especially like the ability to scan in B&W from the buttons on the front of the machine. Also, on the Mac you can scan to PDF without buying Acrobat!
Faxing is great - I like that it doesn't have an ugly phone handset cluttering up the unit! I also like the paper and ink cost saving of network fax receipt-yes; you can set it up to receive faxes to any desktop! The G3 fax speed is amazing (most large corporations use G3 faxes), and you can fax out several documents to several places at the same time! Although it can fax out and receive color faxes, it will print (rather than save to a PC) incoming color faxes-I cannot figure out why this needed feature wasn't obvious to Brother. Yes, you really can place a network fax in the queue as you are simultaneously faxing out a document from the same machine - it just holds the PC-fax in memory and waits it's turn!
Copying is available, but shouldn't you just scan it in (think Green, America!) - B&W 300 dpi scanning is quite fast enough. Sure, color copying is cool, but why? If you need to copy things smaller or thicker than a 3"x5" card get the MFC-5440CN instead for its flatbed capability.
On balance, this product is an excellent way for the SOHO user to take advantage of comprehensive and cost-saving features that are now available to the larger corporate world at an affordable price point. It's built to wear out as your business grows, and is a truly multiplatform solution. I highly recommend this unit to my fellow Mac users and for all frugal environmentally conscious business start-ups.
