We purchased the Interpret 405S in May 2010 for $59.99, which was a discounted price since we were buying a new computer. The main reason we decided to go for it was the ink cartridges for our old HP printer were $20 more than buying a new printer when you had to replace both of them. However we haven't really found the value in the 405S yet because we've already had to replace the cartridges several times. I almost gave 3 stars since the rest of the features are fine, but the ink problem is just too frustrating to overlook.
Cons:
* Since purchasing the printer at the end of May (less than 4 months ago), we have replaced the black ink 5 times and the colors 3 times. We are not heavy printers (we replaced our HP ink maybe 3-4 times a year), and have the default print mode in the draft quality. The included cartridges lasted for less than a week, so we replaced them twice with the regular cartridges(which is all our local store carried) before ordering the XLs online about a month ago. We are now on our second Black XL and will need to replace the first set of color XLs in a few more print jobs.
* We were especially looking forward to being able to replace each color separately. However we have found this to be kind of useless, it seems like the colors all run out at the same time and each time we've replaced one color we have to replace all three.
* The cartridges seem to dry out between uses. We don't print everyday, and if it's been more than a day or two the prints have lines through them despite having plenty of ink and we need to run the cleaning cycle to get it to print properly. This never happened with our HP.
* Print speed can be very slow if the printer has been off or gone into sleep mode. If it is fully on it prints extremely fast and copies and scans quickly as well, but if you're using it for the first time in a couple of hours it can take several minutes for it to spit out a simple black and white notepad document (this is the same on both our computers so it isn't the computer it's the printer)
Pros:
* The copy and scan features both work well, and the copy quality has been very good.
* The wireless is nice and we've moved our laptops all over our house and had no problem with connecting to the printer in the office.
* The picture printing quality has been nice, but because of the excessive ink consumption we've only printed 2 photos the entire time we've had the printer.
Overall I wouldn't recommend this printer. If Lexmark could do something to fix the ink issue (Please!) it would be a great, affordable printer; but so far all my $59.99 deal has bought me is an additional $60 a month in ink costs.
