(More customer reviews)Used to really like the Peek. It was simple, satisfied my needs, and was very affordable. Unfortunately, they went through a transition that really soured me to their product. One day my Peek simply stopped working and then they blamed it on another company. They made us purchase a replacement (although at a low cost) and then it took them 3 weeks (plus) to get us back up and running. For some, this is no big deal and you move on, but for me, it was simply unacceptable. What made the situation really bad, wasn't the outage and the amateur response, it was the total lack of communication that followed the outage.
The company simply didn't tell their users what was going on.
This was a powerful signal that they don't understand their core customer. We simply needed to know how long we were going to out of service and they simply refused to tell us.
To that end , they shut down their phone lines and didn't accept people calling in. You could only email (from another computer or device), and then that would take days for them to respond.
Overall, as long as the system is working, it is OK. But as soon as there is trouble - forget it. The company just inst robust enough, or professional enough to make it through a rough patch.

(More customer reviews)If you are a business professional, stay as far away from Neat Receipts as possible. As someone who relies on the scanning of documents and receipts for tax purposes I can tell you that this product is terrible. It has a lot of bugs. I have used it on an a high powered computer with XP. This software invariably freezes up often when you convert documents and receipts to PDF. And if you are scanning documents for tax purposes, be prepared for a lot of headaches as you will have to go to task manager and end the program and then start it up again and then locate the last folder where you scanned the file. As if that weren't enough the whole scanning process is very slow when you convert to PDF. And it doesn't end there as you have to correct the database often as it reads the totals wrong very often. It will invariably add an extra digit or read the dollar sign as a digit. Then comes the most unforgivable fault. It charges you to update your software just so that you can use your hardware on a newer operating system such as Windows 7. This is the first company that I have ever encountered that charges just to patch your software to work with the current operating system. It's like Delta and United Airlines charging a hundred and fifty dollars fee just to make a change to your flight. When that happened I just simply ditched them and went with another airline. In that case it was less costly to just purchase another ticket from another airline to go back home. Rather than being a sucker and paying Neat Receipts this extortion fee I decided to purchase a new scanner from another company that DOES NOT CHARGE a fee just to patch the software. I also want to add that Neat Receipts did not respond to my e-mails in regards to the ridiculous price to purchase the software. I will never purchase another Neat Receipts product and hope that you will not make the same mistake that I made.

Canon BJC-80 Portable Printer Review

(More customer reviews)I have nothing but good things to say about the BJC-80. I've had it for two years, use it almost daily (mostly for color graphics printing) and it's still going strong. It travels well and is very convenient to use. Black and white print quality is excellent and color print quality is out of this world. I have the battery pack and use infrared with my Thinkpad notebook (something about wireless printing that can really impress a client!). I also use the scanning adapter - works fine on the road, but I prefer a flatbed scanner for most jobs.

Canon IS22 Color Image Scanner Cartridge Review

(More customer reviews)The ability to use an optional scanner cartridge with you printer is a wonderful idea. Number one, it saves a lot of deskspace. Second, it is cheaper than most flat bed scanners. And you get technical support from the same company, if needed.
You won't get high quality scans with this product though. There are noticeable vertical or horizontal lines that show up in the scanned image (depending whether you were scanning portrait or landscape) even when scanned in the highest possible resolution. Most of the lines can be retouched with good photo editing software like Photoshop 4.0 or above, but are still noticeable after printing.
In conclusion; buy this for the convenience and space saving benefits. If you are planning on getting proffesional results, use a flatbed scanner. If you're just scanning snapshots to send via email to relatives and friends, than this is probably the most economical choice for you.

Uniden BC350C 800 MHz Mobile Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)I bought my first scanner from a local Church sale about two years ago. It was a crystal based Regency brand, that luckily had all of the correct crystals for the St. Louis area. I was hooked.
To this day I would never consider myself an afficionado or an expert, but I dabble around a bit, so take this review in that context.
I bought this Bearcat BC350C scanner as a birthday present to myself just a few days ago and it's a blast. Parts of the interface are undeniably clunky. Selecting to listen for just the Police or EMS/Fire bands is easy, but programming stuff is a bit icky. It's not complex, just slow - I'd rather be able punch in a frequency and store it, but this requires you to find a frequency first, THEN store it in the "Private" bank.
Anyway, for something you want to pop right out of the box and have work as advertised? Well . . .
Within minutes I was listening to a helicopter overhead ("What's the radar look like ... garble, garble"), picking up the local bus service ("She said she put a $20 bill in the box but I wasn't looking"), and hearing the local gendarmes being dispatched to quell a domestic dispute ("Subject is a white female, attempting to break into the house. Lots of shouting, both are unarmed"). I even picked up one of our neighbor's child monitors!
This really is best used while sitting down, rather than as a mobil unit; nonetheless, I dragged it into my car (hook up was trivial with included DC lighter plugin) and tooled down the rainy highways on a Monday, listening on the police band for reported accidents (I could make out about half a dozen).
From my reading, I know there are better scanners, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the BC350C for other beginners like myself. Sit down and read the manual while you're playing with it, and you'll get the hang of things pretty quickly. If you've never listened to scanners, give yourself a little bit of time to develop an ear. I also recommend that you keep a pad and pencil nearby to jot down interesting frequencies you can usually look up on the Internet later (search for your state and the phrase "scanner frequencies").
You might move up and onward in scanner-dom, and this nifty little gadget is likely to just be your introductory toy to the exciting world of the electro-magnetic spectrum!

Get in on all the action with the Uniden BC350C, a powerful radio scanning and searching unit. In search mode, The BC350C can search 13 bands to find active frequencies. This differs from scanning in that the unit searches for frequencies that have not been programmed into the scanner's channels. The scanner automatically chooses between two speeds (Search and Turbo Search) while searching. During search mode the scanner will search 100 frequencies per second, while in Turbo Search Mode the scanner can achieve up to 300 frequencies per second in bands that have 5 kHz steps.
In scanning mode, The BC350C scans programmed channels at the rate of up to 100 channels per second until it locates an active frequency. When scanning stops on an active frequency, it remains on that channel as long as the transmission continues. (More customer reviews)This is a very good portable printer and comes in three versions. The printer for all 3 versions is identical, but difference is in the rechargeable battery, the wifi wireless, and bluetooth communicator.
There are some negative reviews for this printer stating poor photo print quality or subpar text. But this is due to the user not reading the manual which clearly explains that the supplied cartridges are for general use. If you are going to print photos, then you need to purchase the photo cartridge for superb prints. If you want deep crisp text, then Cartridge #88 does the job. So the negative reviews are not fair to HP or the prospective buyer.
This is a great little printer which can go on the road by either powering it through the car adapter or rechargeable battery (not included with the basic model)
Also, this printer can print from cellphone pics, and other handheld devices such as PDA (via bluetooth technology). The photo's are clear, crisp sharp images
and the text prints are also good. Not a bad investment at all, just buy the proper cartridge for the job and you'll be a happy camper. Not a bad choice at all.

Canon PIXMA iP100 Mobile Photo Printer Review

(More customer reviews)We bought this little gem to take to Europe. First impressions are very favorable. It's small, reliable, and prints beautifully. At just over four pounds, it's perfect for travel.
The little Bluetooth adaptor also works very well. Reading the manual (!), I discovered it is possible to mount the adapter permanently inside the printer so that it's not exposed and doesn't need attachment every time it is used. This is a simple procedure, and enhances the usefulness of the Bluetooth capability that is all but de rigueur when traveling. The installation / setup information is also in the electronic manual that comes on the CD.
But as good as the printer is, it does not come with (nor does Canon offer) a case of any kind. I found the perfect solution - from Case-Mate: go to http://www.case-[...] and buy the 'Glovez 15"' sleeve (like a large envelope with a velcro closure / flap). It comes in an assortment of colors and is a skin-tight (but very workable) fit in the 'length' direction. When inserted, the printer doesn't take up every bit of the case in the 'width' direction, meaning there is just enough room to also accommodate the cord and AC brick. Throw these in, close the flap, and you're always ready to roll.
Best part: this 'Glovez' sleeve is only $9.99 + $3.99 S/H, and gets to you in a few days. It's not bulky - just what one wants to protect the printer but not take up room. (As an aside, the Case-Mate Glovez 13" [for the MacBook 13" and Air] fits the Lenovo ThinkPad X300 perfectly).
March 8, 2011: Came back (for the first time) to look over some of my reviews, and thought I would update this one. We took the printer to Europe for a month in the summer of 2008 (and, as noted by one of the commenters, it does indeed have a built-in usable voltage range of 100 - 240V, 50 - 60 Hz, so one needs only an adapter for local outlets, and not a transformer of any kind). It performed flawlessly then, and continues to do so today.
We take it everywhere. It goes in the bag wherever we go on vacation, or on business, and has never missed a beat. It sets up in an instant as soon as you get to your hotel room - so easy to use. As stated before, I highly recommend the internally-mounting bluetooth adapter; it's never in the way, impossible to lose, and reliable. OK: Canon gets a small demerit for not building it in in the first place, but... With today's wireless-built-in portable PCs and other devices, it's a snap to hook up to the Internet within moments of arriving at your hotel, then send maps, proposals, anything else, etc. to the printer with no cables whatever. Especially good when both of us have our laptops out at a hotel room: we can both send jobs to the printer across the room without getting in each other's way. It's quick, reliable, durable, with various 'quality levels' available - and I highly recommend it for mobile use.
I know Canon also makes a battery that 'bolts-on' to the back of this printer. For my application, the additional $100 wasn't worth the extra bulk - to achieve a freedom from the electric grid that I didn't need. But if you conduct business in your pickup, or out in the field, it would certainly make sense: put the printer on the passenger seat and produce a customer invoice, etc. on the spot.
I seldom wax so enthusiastic over a product, and have been known to be excoriatingly critical of poor designs / execution. But Canon hit the nail dead center with this product: if you're in the market for a genuinely useful, rugged, portable printer - get it. You will not regret the decision.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S300 Color Mobile Scanner Review

1) It intelligently waits until the computer is idle, to auto-perform OCR chores. You have the option to do so as you scan, but this slows down scanning. There's also a menu click which yields a list of scans awaiting OCR-- really nice touch!
2) Unlike proprietary organizers, the "cabinets" created within the organizer software are actual directories on your hard disk. Likewise, folders created within the organizer's cabinets are subdirectories on your disk. So, you get the best of all worlds-- use the organizer knowing you're not locked in, as it's just a slick interface for what is actually existing on your drive. (i.e., Create a cabinet = create a directory)
3) Thermal receipts, even trying-to-fade ones, come thru crisp and clear, miraculously, when scanning.
4) I have Adobe Acrobat Professional 8, which is a necessary evil in my business. I can now avoid that bloated monster altogether when it comes to receipts and anything else I choose to scan using this system. That alone is worth the price of entry!
5) The duplex scanning is wondrous-- paper goes thru only once, with both sides captured simultaneously -- speedily. This still blows my mind (I have a duplex Canon MP830 multifunction-- for all practical purposes, its scanner has been blown away by this device.)
6) Let's face it-- sometimes, paper jams. This is the FIRST machine encountered-- since the late 80's when I started computing-- which makes it so easy to fix things. You just push the little square silver arrow atop the scanner, open, get the paper, and close it. Incredibly easy and no-fuss! And yes, the wrinkled paper then flows thru fine (I gently kept a finger on that one item as it scanned thru, just to be safe.) BTW, I had scanned upwards of 300 items before a jam occurred.
7) Lots of options, re speed, resolution, etc. All easy to get to, all quick to implement. These folks actually used this thing during the creation process, as it seems they didn't miss a trick in making this a genuinely consumer friendly device!
8) The consumables are comparatively cheap. The pad assembly (Part # PA03541-0002) needs replacement every 10,000 sheets or a year-- google the actual part # to see the $8 retailers); the pick roller (Part # PA03541-0001) lasts about 100,000 sheets-- about $12. I noticed a huge price variation among retailers while googling, so I placed my order today; they're not in stock at most places, but I have plenty of time so who cares. This is bound to be a profoundly popular scanner per word-of-mouth, and consumable prices may increase accordingly. BTW, right-click the ScanSnap Manager tray icon for "check consumable supplies" to get a tally on current sheet usage, which you can reset during the replacement process.
9) Small footprint-- lives in a bookcase shelf atop my desk.
10) One of the rare occasions where I've had absolutely no post-purchase regrets with an electronic item!
Long and short of it is this: I've finally lived long enough to see one hardware manufacturer get everything right. There's a pdf manual, but I read it only to investigate consumables (thought it would be a "gotcha!" but was pleasantly suprised at the reasonable cost). I assume you're reading these reviews carefully (as I did), trying to decide between the ScanSnap and a lower priced alternative. For once, I decided not to play cheapskate, and boy oh boy, am I glad!! (The price here has already escalated a bit, so do it now, my friend!)

NeatReceipts Mobile Scanner and Digital Filing System for Mac Review

(More customer reviews)I received an advance-release of this product at WWDC08 in June 2008, and I've been playing with it ever since. It is top notch in every regard. The hardware is small and only uses the USB port [no need to find an A/C plug!]. The software is even better, as it grabs data right from the scanned receipt; no need for retyping in most cases!
This is a high quality product, and feels like something Apple has made, as even the packaging is tidy and well organized.
I highly recommend this over the currently offered shareware solutions. The software is really top notch, and the scanner is portable enough to fit in a laptop bag easily.

Fujitsu SCANSNAP S1100 CLR 600DPI USB Mobile Scanner (PA03610-B005) Review

(More customer reviews)I love the ScanSnap line and have had several models. I have adopted this product line at my workplace for personal scanners, and we have never had a failure. They're fast, reliable, durable and this model is no different. I've also owned the model slightly larger than this, the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Mobile Scanner (PA03603-B005). I would definitely choose this model for the mobile traveling worker.
This is the first ultra mobile Scansnap, and I cannot convey how impressed I am with it! The device is literally about the size of two snickers bars put end to end. It's tiny, feels well constructed, and does not require external power. The software installation is quick is easy. It does not come with Adobe Acrobat Full version, like some of the older models used to include. It does not scan double sided as do many of the other Scansnap devices. If you've used a scansnap this one puts the brakes on and reverses you-- the paper actually feeds in the front and out the back-- Opposite of all Scansnaps. It works just fine once you realize what's going on there.
Those couple of drawbacks considered, if you are a mobile road warrior who needs to scan on the go, (signed paperwork, business cards, receipts, etc.) this is clearly my most preferred choice for a mobile scanner. The quality of scans is completely satisfactory, and honestly this little device does much better with tiny thin pieces of paper like receipts as compared to some of the larger models-- that are designed for a whole stack of paper-- and from time to time will skew a thin tiny receipt sideways and crinkle it up.
My thoughts on this model vs. the S1300: If you travel and set up at a hotel, temporary office or trade table type environment for a few days or all day, or need double sided scanning, the S1300 is a fine option. It's larger and takes more space if you're flying. If you travel or fly daily, or move from client to client during the day and want the smallest lightest option, this would be my recommended option. It would be perfect for sales forces, insurance company members, consultants, and others who go from place to place quickly, want minimal bulk, and the ability to scan a few documents quickly & easily. If you need to scan small stacks of paper, go with the S1300.
As I continue to have the scanner longer I will plan to update the review. But at this point, the install was easy, the scan quality is good and use is easy, and the device is unbelievably small yet feels "not flimsy" and I couldn't be any more pleased with it's functionality and portability. Update: I have added a photo of it in my hand for size comparison. It's unbelievably trim!
Update: I've completed my first business trip with 13 pages of various sized receipts, full page receipts, baggage fee wide receipts, etc. I was able to scan them all in about 2 minutes. As well, a couple features I didn't mention explicitly above: The scanner auto aligns the images-- you don't have to worry about feeding them through exactly straight. Finally, the software "sits and waits" between receipts you feed through, until you click "finished". This is a FAR superior software feature to the larger S1300-- because it takes a few moments to put down & pick up another receipt. The scanner sits patiently and waits for you to feed through as many receipts or pieces of paper as you want, with no urgency.
The scanning went perfectly and I'll post a few examples of the scans with no personal info on them as an example of scan quality. Since I've had the scanner I carry it with me in my backpack every day to & from work and everywhere I travel with my work backpack. Still going strong with no issues.
