ETON G5 AM/FM/Shortwave Portable Radio with SSB (Single Side Band) Review

ETON G5 AM/FM/Shortwave Portable Radio with SSB (Single Side Band)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this radio for about a week now..
the instruction booklet is a little skimpy and setup can be confusing, however this is a fine radio.
FM selectivity is good, and quality through earphones is excellent, on SW the SSB feature is necessary to listen to HAM radio..its just a shame its not synchronous sideband detection..you must fine tune to select USB or LSB...Other than that the sensitivity is good, my only conclusion is that its not as good as my Satellit 800, but its also 1/20 the size and < 1/2 price.
There is a nifty "time zone" feature that allows the traveller to easily select which time zone he is in..the glaring omission however is that while GMT can be set (=UTC or world time and the basis for SW radio) all time zones are simply linked directly to GMT..or put it another way, there is zero capability to deal with any summer time...you need to muck about faking a time zone for BST, EDT or whatever.. this is a silly error.
The feel of the slightly rubberized surface is excellent, as is the display lighting and three methods of tune .. a rotary know (thankfully), seek, and direct frequency input.
If you are looking for a decent portable radio with SW, packed with the necessary features for enjoyable listening and without unnecessary frills, i cannot think of a better buy.

Midland 74-250C SAME Handheld Weather Alert Radio Review

Midland 74-250C SAME Handheld Weather Alert Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Alas, the problem is that none of the handheld S.A.M.E. radios are very good. The main problem is short battery life -- the best units run perhaps a few days in monitoring mode, the worst a few hours. This one runs for about a week if you don't touch it, but manipulating the controls consumes the batteries in less than a day.
The other problem is the user interface. Why do manufacturers insist on overloading controls to the point of idiocy? I have to read the manual every time I want to change a setting on any of these radios -- the interaces are completing nonintuitive.
Despite these caveats, the Midland 74-250C does its job -- a reasonably sensetive receiver and clear alph-numeric LCD display. I had to buy one of every handheld S.A.M.E radio available for a product review, and this one is the winner.

Stay informed of current local weather and hazard conditions whether you're camping, hiking, hunting, or just hanging around the house with this handheld Midland weather alert radio. Capable of receiving seven National Oceanic & Atmospheric Association (NOAA) channels--each of which receives emergency advisories on tornadoes, floods, severe thunderstorms, civil danger warnings, and more--the 74-250C is a must for people who live in high-risk weather areas, or for people who just want a little extra protection when hitting the outdoors. Plus, the seven NOAA channels offer coverage for roughly 93 percent of the U.S., so most residents are well covered regardless of where they live.
Another valuable function is the radio's Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) reception. SAME allows users to program the radio to sound an alert only when weather and other emergencies threaten a specific county or counties. The technology eliminates all alerts from other areas, so users won't perk up their ears each time the alert sounds only to learn that the emergency is actually 100 miles up the highway. The 74-250C's memory system accepts up to nine counties, so you can monitor a broad swatch of counties at once or restrict it to one.
Should an alert occur, users have a choice of three warning systems: a 90 dB siren, a voice alert, or a flashing red LED light. The siren is the best option for people who might not have their radios nearby at all times, while the latter two alerts are a bit less extreme on the ears. The digital panel, meanwhile, displays up to 56 messages, so you'll instantly know what's coming your way. Additional features include a built-in thermometer with a freeze alert that notifies you when the temperature drops below freezing, a full-function clock with an alarm and snooze button, an external earphone jack, and a water-resistant housing.
The radio, which works with two AA batteries (not included), measures 2.38 by 4 by 1.25 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

Cobra 75 WX ST CB Radio Mic Review

I installed this CB in a newer Jeep Wrangler (JK). The hand-held size is great & the "brains" of the unit tucks away nicely & comes with groments to stub out the hook up to provide a real slick install. I added an external speaker from Radio Shack (around $20) & they work well together. I'd highly reccommend this unit

Passive Air Band Monitor Review

Passive Air Band Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I put this together over about a week of lunch hours, probably about 3 hours to assemble. Directions were clear and easy to understand. I heard nothing but some white noise when I first powered it up, but my workstation is below ground. As soon as I stepped outside I started hearing planes. The closer planes were the loudest. It worked first time, with no additional tuning or tweaking needed.
I used it on my last vacation, from inside a plane you'll only hear your own pilot, but it's pretty interesting. It's a completely passive design and emits zero RF, so it is perfectly safe for in-flight use. After about 20 hours of listening, I am still on my first battery, so battery life is good as well. I can recommend this, if it's the kind of thing you're looking for.

Cobra 29 LX LE 50th Anniversary CB Radio Review

Cobra 29 LX LE 50th Anniversary CB Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Cobra 29 50th Anniversary CB is a very attractive radio. With it's "cutting edge" digital display (I only say cutting edge because digital displays have been around for how long, seriously?) it's the first CB radio that I am aware of to offer this feature.
I just got back into CBing and I had a pretty easy time setting it up. The Radio Tests were the most useful and most confusing part of the radio. Upon first activation I kept getting a "Antenna Warning" which is something I'd never experienced before CBing in the past, simply because no other CB would warn you of poor performance or setup. I found out that the warning was simply because my antenna wasn't tuned properly.
The weather stations come in clearly and the scan feature is nice for trying to find conversations on channels other than 19. All other features seemed pretty standard. If something else comes to mind will comment later. Please ask a question if you think I'm wise enough to answer it. :-)
Overall, I like the radio. I only rated it 4 stars based on my limited experience with CB radios. I'll attach photos of it in my Jeep.

Midland NTVP1 Nautico 88-Channel Water-Resistant VHF Marine Two-Way Radio Review

Midland NTVP1 Nautico 88-Channel Water-Resistant VHF Marine Two-Way Radio
Average Reviews:

This radio does what you need - not what you don't. The reception is good and sounds good. The calls I have placed were received "Loud and Clear". It is compact and comes with any accessory (rechargeable battery and two chargers, waterproof bag, bracket, clip) that you could want. It also runs on AA cells if your rechargeable runs down.
It does not have Digital Selective Calling which is not something I care about. It is not waterproof outside of its bag - also not a concern to me the way I use it.
I am a 25 year boatowner and I think the radio is great.

Cobra 75WXST 40-Channel CB Radio Review

Cobra 75WXST 40-Channel CB Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Cobra 75 WX ST Weatherband CB provides an incredible amount of functionality in a very small package. Installation is fast and easy - with a couple tools, your antenna mounted, and little skill, you can have this radio up and running in an hour or two.
CB radios are limited to low-power broadcasting at 4 watts or less. This radio provides maximum power allowed by law and is capable of some pretty incredible range under the right conditions. With a properly tuned, high-quality antenna, I have had coversations with others using the same radio up to 9 miles away. Under normal circumstances, 1-2 miles is more realistic.
As for features, this one has several:
- Scan (all 40 channels in sequence)
- Dual Scan (two channels of your choice)
- Memory
- Lock (so the hand controls don't get reset by accident)
- Weatherband (10 NOAA frequencies)
- Last 3 channels
- SoundTracker (like Dolby noise reduction)
I use mine in a 1999 Jeep Wrangler where there is little extra space for another device. It fits perfectly on my console with the small box hidden away inside.
I can listen to truckers while I am on the highway, talk to my friends when we go off-highway, or scan the channels for both when driving to and from the trails. In the two years I have used mine, it has never given me any problems. It is very sturdy and should stand up to hard use.
I purchased the optional external speaker so that it would be easier to hear but many people find the unit works well right out of the box!
There might be bigger, badder CB's out there, but this one is a peach!

Cobra 148 GTL 40-Channel CB Radio Review

Cobra 148 GTL 40-Channel CB Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First unit shipped to me received fine but the transmit audio was terrible. Even with the Dynamike turned up all the way people could barely hear me. Had to literally shout to be heard at all.
To Amazon's credit they sent me a replacement unit 2nd day air. Amazon has been great to deal with, as always.
This second radio seems to transmit fine so far. However, the speaker of this radio emits a constant, low volume, high pitched whine when receiving. The first radio did not have this "feature".
The good news is all of the controls and features seem to work correctly and the noise blanker and automatic noise limiter do a terrific job stopping car ignition noises. I figure I will keep this radio and live with the whine and hope no other problems crop up. If they do I will change my rating.

Grundig G6 Aviator AM/FM, aircraft band and Shortwave Radio, Black Review

Grundig G6 Aviator AM/FM, aircraft band and Shortwave Radio, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is indeed an excellent new product. It seems very well made and should last a long time if treated with care. The radio is both extremely small (almost the same size as the Kaito KA11!) and readily transportable yet the reception is still excellent on all available bands. It is certainly not a Kaito KA1103 by any means, but for its size and weight it is quite exceptional, plus it has the aircraft band frequencies (see below for further details).
I like being able to change the news/music switch in order to slightly improve AM and SW signal audio fidelity (on my unit it is certainly NOT a deep bass boost switch however with little tonal changes being evident as the switch changes its position). Unfortunately this is also NOT a narrow/wide bandwidth filter switch which is not available on this radio at all. Using the SSB (single sideband) BFO (beat frequency oscillator) tuner is also very easy and straight forward with a key press on the front of the radio and in fine increments using the tuning dial as well. Unlike some other radios, SSB tuning is also available on the G6 on the AM band as well as on SW which is a very useful feature. The separate ability to step tune in very small increments with the jog dial setting is also excellent in my opinion once a signal of interest has been located. The unit also has an attached 20 inch telescopic antenna as well as an external antenna jack which is especially nice for receiving the weaker FM/SW/Aircraft band stations as well as an earphone jack for private listening (including FM stereo). LW and MW (AM) stations are tuned using the internal and excellent ferrite antenna coil.
I rather like the digital volume controls as well. The steps between each setting are sufficiently small that quite precise control of the volume levels can be attained, especially when using earphones which is my most common mode of operating this radio given the smallness of its speaker (but still adequate).
In addition, the Grundig manual for the G6 although too brief and lacking in some important technical details is just fine to read with no English translation problems as with the Degen (Kaito) radio manuals for the KA1102/KA1103. Degen now makes the G4, G5 and G6 for Grundig (whose designs originated from the Degen engineering brainpower from some 6 years ago now). These radios are now advertised as designed in California (by the Eton Corporation) and made in China, but to be fair Grundig has capitalized on a proven Degen/Kaito design and greatly improved on the ergonomics for using these fine radios.
The availability of the complete LW spectrum (formally from 153-279 KHz), but continuous on this radio from 150 KHz all the way to the start of the AM (MW) band at 520 KHz and of the Aircraft bands (117-137 MHz) and of the complete SW spectrum (1.711 to 29.999 MHz) on this unit is also true of the G5 as well (with the exception of the aircraft band). The Eton Corporation will soon start to advertise the availability of the complete LW band features on these new Grundig branded radios since it was originally and inadvertently overlooked by the marketers. (If you still have any doubts read the back of the radio in zoom mode on this website). The Sony ICF-SW7600GR also has the full spectrum of LW/AM(MW) and SW bands too and has advertised it all along, but that radio also lacks the aircraft band that is available on the new G6 Aviator radio. Especially for international travelers, the 10 KHz AM tuning step for N. America can also be changed to the 9 KHz step that is standard in Europe and Asia too.
One negative item is that the airband can not be automatically scanned like all of the other available bands on this radio. Another very negative item (see also below for those of you who live in heavily urban areas with lots of simultaneous interfering signals possible), is that there is no RF gain switch (DX/normal/local, etc.) on this radio at all either. Considering just how sensitive the front end of this radio is to weak signals, this is a very surprising error of omission in my humble opinion and one that should be rectified by Grundig (PUN intended!).
The G6 even has alarms and time zone capabilities and 700 memories that can be labeled along with with multiple and very useful ways I might add to tune and store information in this very versatile, dual conversion PLL (phase locked loop) synthesized, diminutive "micro-receiver style" radio. These memories are arranged for all of the 100 pages with 7 memories to a page. Each of these 100 pages can be labeled alphanumerically in groupings to boot. The presets can also be chosen on each page randomly regardless of the band. On another website there is a discussion of some occasional small microprocessor problems when loading two adjacent presets on a single page. The radio apparently can lock up, but it is easy to unlock and simply reload the page once again with no further preset storage problems.
There is even an on-screen clock as well as the day of the week and a battery level indicator, a hold switch for locking all of the buttons as well as a separate lock switch chosen through the jog dial for the tuned frequency. There is also a very nice on screen and very detailed signal strength meter and a nice orange back-light system. The radio can also charge batteries inside the radio (sounds like the KA1102/KA1103 proven technology once again- eh?) and it even comes with a one year warranty, a slip case as well as a AC/DC adapter charger. It runs on 2 AA batteries normally while in its portable state. It even has a nice carrying strap permanently attached to the radio as well which is a nice touch given its very small size. For you collectors, there is even a Buzz Aldrin special edition version of this radio advertised on Amazon, but apparently it is not yet available (as on early May 2008).
UPDATE: May 27, 2008:
I am in Alabama on travel and I too have now experienced very significant bleeding of apparently high power am stations directly on to the aircraft band at several frequencies. As a heads up, this just goes to show that to adequately test any radio it should be done at several locations. However, I have experienced none of this am frequency bleeding at my home location in the high mountains of New Mexico for example. This suggests that the dual conversion available at two IF (intermerdiate frequencies) in this radio are not adequate in some locations to adequately block unwanted noise from the aircraft bands.
June 18, 2008 UPDATE:
Yes, as I had previously indicated above, the G6 Aviator is a PLL (Phase locked loop) dual conversion receiver with a digital display and 700 presetable memories (Information recently confirmed by Walter Hess, Technical Support Manager, Etón Corporation, 1015 Corporation Way. Palo Alto, CA 94303 USA)
Finally, I look forward very much to having the fun of using this radio for the high quality sounds of music, news and just general LW/AM(MW) broadcast band, shortwave and aircraft band listening from all over the globe for a very long time.
September 8, 2008: UPDATE
For those of you who really really like this radio (and there is a lot to like), in order to compensate for its extremely good sensitivity (except perhaps in the am band), a trick that I learned about by reading other web reviews is to actually shorten the whip antenna length significantly when bleeding and other interference occurs. This allows the arriving radio signals to not overload the system and be received with very significant improvement. Ironically, usually we are always interested in lengthening the radio antenna (especially outdoors if it is not too noisy at the radio frequencies of interest). I hope that this may help you to continue to enjoy your new Grundig radio! Out in the open countryside this bleeding is NOT a problem at all, so only the big city radio listeners (or travelers to big cities) need to be beware of this potential problem for the G6.
April 11, 2009: UPDATE
One very nice feature of the 24 hour clock system is that it is fully adjustable for traveling including a GMT (Zulu or UTC) setting. With the radio off you simply press and hold the #8 key until a long list of coded city names appears. Next, you simply choose the time zone code closest to the one that you are currently within using the tuning knob and wait 8 seconds and you are all set (it is then automatically stored until you change it again). If you desire to know the Universal (UTC) time separately, you simply choose the "GMT" choice briefly to find the time in Greenwich, England and then repeat the above procedure and go right back to your current timezone location. (Unfortunately there is no provision in the G6 for entering the date or activating daylight savings time so at certain times of the year your indicated GMT time could be up to 1 hour off unless you live in Arizona, etc.) As you continue to travel this process is easily repeated as often as may be needed.

Sangean WR-2 Digital AM/FM Tabletop Radio, Black Review

Sangean WR-2 Digital AM/FM Tabletop Radio, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very appealing clock radio with digital readout that gives you name of song, artist, and other information as you listen. The mono aural speaker is warm and full. The radio is attractive, solid and well-built, evincing nothing cheap or plastic-laden. The AM is very good. Most FM stations come in strong. But hard-to-get FM stations like 89.3 from Pasadena (I live 40 miles away in Torrance) requires that I move the FM antenna, but this is not a big deal, just a nitpick.
Most listeners will love the WR-2. But if you're a radio buff like I am and enjoy the outstanding FM reception of the Grundig S350, the Kaito 1101 and 1103 models (called Degen in China), then I'm afraid the WR-2 will disappoint. To be fair to the WR-2, the more expensive Bose radio suffers the same problem of mediocre FM reception.
Another important point: Because this radio has a remote control, it works great in your computer office. You can keep the WR-2 six feet or so away from your computer and avoid interference as you toggle stations and volume with your remote.
Post Script: Make sure to turn on the external antenna switch in the back of the Sangean. It improves reception by tenfold.
Update: I bought a second WR-2 (in black) three years after the first and get excellent FM reception so apparently the radio has improved in newer models. New rating: 5 stars.

Boasting an acoustically balanced wooden enclosure and an enhanced front-firing 3-inch speaker, the Sangean WR-2 tabletop radio offers the sound and features of a living room system in a cabinet that fits conveniently in a bedroom, kitchen, or garage. Any discussion of the WR-2 begins with its black wooden housing, which is rich in both appearance and tone. The cabinet's front surface features the speaker on the left side, a series of intuitively placed control buttons toward the bottom, and a generously sized LCD display in the middle with three brightness levels. More importantly, the cabinet teams with the 7-watt amplifier and the acoustic bass compensation system to add warmth and depth to the audio. Complementing the housing is Sangean's advanced RF/IF electronic circuitry, which picks up distant AM and FM stations and reproduces them with unmatched clarity, making music and even talk programs come alive.
Even though the WR-2 is advertised as an AM/FM radio, it offers much more than a standard digital tuner, including a Radio Data System (RDS) that displays short text messages on applicable FM stations, along with support for the Enhanced Other Network (EON) and its traffic information (available in certain regions). And unlike most tabletop radios, the WR-2 lets listeners adjust the treble and bass levels via the variable volume control. In its default mode, the rotary volume knob displays the volume level from 1 to 60. Tap it once, however, and it turns into a full-range treble control, and two taps creates a full-range bass control. Additional features include a clock with an alarm (radio or buzzer), an auxiliary input jack for connecting such devices as an iPod or MP3 player (both of which sound great through the speaker), a recording output jack, 10 memory presets that help you quickly find your favorite stations, and a full-featured infrared remote control.
A final bonus stems from the power backup function, which plays the radio for six minutes during a power failure (great for emergencies) and retains the memory preset and clock values for about an hour. The WR-2 measures roughly 9.5 by 4.5 by 6 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 5.5 pounds.
What's in the Box WR-2 tabletop radio, detachable power cord, infrared remote control, user's manual.

Cb Radio K30 35 Inch Magnet Mount Antenna Review

Cb Radio K30 35 Inch Magnet Mount Antenna
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As an old (and I mean OLD) CB'er, I've been through about all the configurations of antennas you can imagine, from 102" whips to bottom loaders, mid-loaders, top-loaders and rabbit ears. In the end, the golden goal is to get that SWR rating down to as close to "1" as you can. The K30 consistently does this.
First off, if you are just throwing an antenna onto a store-bought CB, forget it...most won't come close to 2, let alone 1. Get a 2-3' jumper and an SWR meter, read the instructions on how to set the SWR, and plan on following these instructions to actually calibrate your antenna...doesn't matter who's antenna you buy. Out of the package, I find the K30 assembled comes in around 2.2 on channels 1 and 40, as has my last one I bought. After trimming 3/4" off the metal whip with a pair of snips, and a couple of dead-keys, I got the SWR balanced at 1.4 for channels 1 and 40, with channel 20 dead-keying 1.07. That's amazing for a $30 antenna! I am getting 3.97 watts out, 4.68 watts in at full Rf gain. I consistently get 12-15 mile communications with the K30, and can get out 10-12 miles on an average day...you just won't do this with another antenna...no matter how much you fight with it. While the Wilson 'Lil-Wil' looks similar, it is NOT close to being a true competitor.
Bottom line: the K30 is a great antenna. They provide you with enough whip, that you can trim it into good/great SWR. The magnet is strong and holds on well, without walking, at 70-mph. It grounds well. It can take a load if you use this on 10-meter, up to 300-watts...which is also nice, if you are like me swapping out the antenna between 11-meter CB and 10-meter bands. (I use a homemade quad on my 10-meter, but only because I like the 12-db gain from it...doesn't keep from testing little magnet-mounts, though).

Kaito Electronics Inc. KA12AIR PLL Digital FM And Aircraft Band Radio Review

Kaito Electronics Inc. KA12AIR PLL Digital FM And Aircraft Band Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATE: October 3, 2009:
Unfortunately the stereo fm option did not work at all on my KA12AIR radio, so I sent it back to Kaito for a new unit. (The unit's fm as heard either through the earphones or through the speaker still sounds great in my opinion even if it isn't in stereo however). The local Kaito office in Montclair, California just informed me today that this fm stereo feature doesn't work on any of their current units that are now in stock, so if you really want this device my humble advice is to wait a while until the overseas factory corrects this rather serious deficiency (as advertized both on the original box and in the Kaito advertizements on Amazon, etc. as being available).
ORIGINAL REVIEW: September 18, 2009:
I ordered this very fine item at noon on Tuesday of this week. It was shipped by Kaito from CA on Wednesday by USPS Priority Mail and arrived in New Mexico early today (Friday). Now that is service for a ~$6 shipping and handling fee!
In my opinion, they are definitely going to sell a bunch of these fine units at this price.
The KA12AIR radio is a super small pocket sized unit and almost identical in size to the Sangean DT-400W that is so popular right now (with full am/fm and weatherband capabilities). In fact it is also a remake inside the Aluminum front shell of the Kaito KA105 radio which apparently didn't sell very well, probably because of its slow band scanning and its very limited shortwave reception capabilities (~5.95-15.6 MHz).
Pros:
1) Very miniature in size and also quite light, the KA12AIR is a PLL (Phase locked loop) digitally synthesized and most likely (at this price) a single conversion IF (Intermediate frequency) radio, consistent with the KA105 design and with a lone (single) bandwidth (but well chosen) with good fm reception and great air-band reception (118-138 MHz) with no bleeding from the fm band that I have discovered. This bleeding is in fact a common complaint regarding the Grundig G6 am/fm/air-band radio that also sells for twice the price of the KA12AIR radio! It tunes using fixed 0.05 MHz steps on fm and with fixed 0.025 MHz steps for the Aircraft band frequencies.
2) Excellent and very fast band scanning capabilities. Also, excellent and fast ATS memory storage system with 100 memories. It also has an easy memory retrieval system for previously stored stations. It is also very easy to either delete individual stations or all of them.
3) It has an on-board clock in either a 12 hr (with a leading P designation to distinguish the evening civilian hour format) or a 24 hr format (with seconds showing for both formats while the system is off, but not available while the radio is turned on) as well as a slide lock system for preventing accidental setting changes including the fine, on-board green LED light which emanates from only the left hand side of the LCD screen.
4) The LCD is a good size considering the smallness of this radio and has good contrast at varying angles and numerous icons including error conditions and also showing battery life continuously both while the radio is either on or off. The LCD screen also indicates when the lock switch is activated, the current band selection, when an fm station is being received in stereo, sleep delay timer conditions, etc.
5) It can be tuned six different ways to receive your desired stations (including a fine automatic tuning and storage- ATS and even a nice memory retrieval system) with an Enter and Exit digital key system with the latter used for correcting entry errors. It also has a very good and easily maneuverable, side and nearly flush-mounted fully rotatable antenna, also just like on the KA11 and on the KA105.
6) It has a working local/DX switch control, an external antenna jack as well as an input plug for a 6V power supply (the power supply is not provided, but it is available separately from Kaito). The volume control knob is an analog pot (potentiometer) with a good deal of volume adjustment/turning available. The system also comes with a set of earbuds and a wrist strap (already attached). The latter item can also be used, as on the KA105, to support the radio on a table with a small insert attached to the strap.
7) It also has a nice and very small reset key to unlock the microprocessor if it ever hangs up on the front of the unit or you can also simply remove the batteries briefly if you don't have a paper-clip or other sharp object handy. All the keys by the way have very good response and have a nice feel, but they also cannot be clicked too fast in order to properly register.
8) It is powered by 2 AA batteries that should last for quite a while (based on the KA105 behavior and performance). The rear battery door is firmly attached to the radio so that it won't get lost and overall the radio is made of very high quality materials and shows the very high quality workmanship that has gone into its production (also made in China as is expected these days).
9) It also comes with a high quality and very readable English language manual.
Cons:
1) The fm stereo reception cannot be turned on and off as it could directly on the KA105. This could be a problem for especially weak signals, but at least it does have a single step DX/local switch (for controlled signal attenuation for interfering signals) that works as noted above.
2) The lone bandwidth doesn't emphasize the low frequency end of the spectrum so fm music audio listening through the otherwise good quality on-board speaker is limited.
3) It doesn't even come with a slip-cover protective case, presumably to keep their overall costs to a minimum.
4) It is too bad that a compatible am reception system could not also be available on this otherwise very fine radio.

Griffin Technology RadioShark AM / FM Desktop Radio with Time-Shift Recording Review

Griffin Technology RadioShark AM / FM Desktop Radio with Time-Shift Recording
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I already have a couple software programs that will automatically record and save radio programming but when the Radio Shark was announced, I couldn't resist. Mac elegance, simplicity and functionality. Or so I thought. The product is solid, well made and the software is easy to use. Unfortunately, the reception is unacceptably poor in my suburban, residential area. Every radio I own from clock radios, a couple Tivoli Pal's, a built in-whole house system, mini-systems and so on receive programming easily. The Radio Shark's reception is inferior to even the lowliest of portables. I've tried everything I can think of. Coiling the USB cable, moving it to every place within reach, using a high dollar shielded usb extension cable which also allowed me to move the Shark further from the computer), using the Radio Shark's headphone input with a pair of ear buds and a minijack to rca cable (as Griffin's website suggests). Nothing seems to help. I have two other radios within 18 inches of computers and they were pretty easy to set up and receive clear, static free programming. The Radio Shark has been a huge disappointment. I should have learned my lesson after purchasing the Power Mate from this company. The Power mate (ditto for the Radio Shark) is very high quality piece of hardware from a fit and finish standpoint but the software was glitchy with a pc. Maybe it would have been better with a mac. But I digress. Perhaps if you live far from all urban and suburban interference or live on a hill with better line of site to the towers you want to receive from, the Radio Shark might be fine. For the rest of us, the Radio Shark is likely to disappoint. If you want to time shift radio programming, I can recommend two excellent pieces of software. High Criteria's Total Recorder Pro (for the pc) and Rogue Amoeba's Audio Hijack Pro for the Mac. I don't work for or profit from either comany. I use both on a daily basis. Both are rock solid. All you need to do is connect a radio to your pc or mac and you're set.

Uniden PC78LTW 40-Channel CB Radio Review

Uniden PC78LTW 40-Channel CB Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently bought one of these radios for my semi tractor. I immediately fell in love with the backlit controls. Years ago, I owned the Cobra version of this radio, but I didn't like it as much as this one. The controls are laid out very logically and have a nice feel. The Delta tune has a center detent for "eyes free" operation as you drive. The weather channels are a welcome addition to a long drive, keeping you informed of changing and/or severe weather ahead. The only things I didn't care that much for are the Dynamic Squelch feature and the front mic connector. DSC doesn't seem to work too well, but I drive with the squelch off (to hear distant signals), so this doesn't detract from an otherwise great radio. Having owned various Cobras, Galaxies, and other "big" radios, I can honestly say I like the Uniden PC78LTW the best.
