Canon imageCLASS D320 Personal Digital Copier and Printer Review

Canon imageCLASS D320 Personal Digital Copier and Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I must admit, the first review posted here on the D320 made me a little nervous. My experience is quite different, and after several months of ownership I am quite pleased.
I'll give a point by point rebuttle to the initial review, as that's the only point of reference (so far):
1) Yes, pick up a USB cable,
2) Printer driver installation on Win98 essentially required no user intervention. With WinXP however, I do seem to recall having to muck with it more, but I'm hazy on the details now,
3) I have printed scores of multi-page documents, many over 15 pages without any problems whatsoever. I've had no spills or jams of any kind,
4) I have not seen any "paper-curl" problems whatsoever,
5) I leave the paper cassette lid/manual-feed slot in place at all times as I have no problem with it. For doing many two-sided copies, it is indeed easier to place the copies back into the paper cassette. But that's my experience with any copier I've used.
6) Making two-sided copies is easy and as efficient as I expected. I've simply experienced no problems.
7) I've experienced no copier caused misalignments. If my copies have been crooked, it was because I set them on the glass improperly.
I am very happy with this unit. It copies as I expect it to, and prints just the same: quickly and without event. It's been able to properly print from all Windoze applications I've thrown at it, and ones many users may not even be using, such as Ghostscript, Acrobat, SecureCRT, PAF, and all image viewing software I've tried. And I've got several machines networked together (Win98 and WinXP) that can all print to the D320 fine using printer sharing.
BTW, the D320 comes with a full, 3500 page toner cartridge too, not a starter unit as with some printers/copiers.

StarTech.com SV431DPUA 4 Port USB DisplayPort KVM Switch with Audio Review

StarTech.com SV431DPUA 4 Port USB DisplayPort KVM Switch with Audio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This KVM switch does not support native resolution of 2560x1600 when connected through display port cables. However, StarTech claims that it supports such resolution and it's written on the box too. In reality, this KVM can't go beyond 1900x1200 resolution. I tried all trial & error methods using different cables. When I called StarTech technical support, they also agreed that this switch currently does not support 2560x1600 resolution, and that they are still working on it. Then why they advertise wrong resolution on this model. Thankfully, I was under return period, and as always, Amazon is great in return issues.

Cisco-Linksys PSUS4 PrintServer for USB with 4 Port Switch Review

Cisco-Linksys PSUS4 PrintServer for USB with 4 Port Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like a number of the other reviews mentioned, the PSUS4 works fine as a printserver but the included setup software isn't worth even removing from the box. I am by no means a networking expert but I had the time to tinker with the device and found that you really need to be ready to configure the PSUS4 directly using your browser and then configure each computer for local printing by creating a new TCP/IP port using the IP address of the unit and configuring it for printing to "USB1". If this sounds complicated it really isn't and with a bit of searching you can find quick and easy instructions from an article on the Linksys website (note the lack of mentioning USB1 in the article).
Long story short, don't buy this if you want plug and play but if you have a basic understanding of networking you will find this works fine after a bit of a painful initial setup. I found that it took much longer just to find the information I needed than actually setting up the unit.

Using a PrintServer frees up your print share PC so you dont have to leave it on all the time. It also removes the printing bottleneck, and sets your PC free to do more useful work. In addition, the PrintServer includes a 4-port 10/100 switch, so you can easily add more devices to your network. All four ports are auto speed negotiating, and have automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover detection, so you dont have to worry about the cable type.

Brother MFC-8480DN High-Performance Laser All-in-One with Networking and Duplex Printing Review

Brother MFC-8480DN High-Performance Laser All-in-One with Networking and Duplex Printing
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife is a middle grades teacher and the copiers at her school are always broken are in use by someone else, so we do all her printing and copying at home - LOTS of printing and copying. I really like the speed and the automatic duplexing. We expect to cut our paper cost by 30-40%. We also create a pdf of each assignment/worksheet to upload to her website so students can get any missed assignments. The scanner - scan to file - option allows you to specify pdf file type and is very fast.
The Automatic Document Feed is excellent with no jams so far even with large documents. We also print hall/bathroom passes on business card stock using the single sheet feeder with no jams. So far we have printed about 5,000 pages and have had no real problems. Setting up the network for sharing the printer was very easy. We expect to print about 5,000 pages per month - well under the 25,000 duty clcle. Our previous MFC 8220 is still being used by a colleague after 3 drum replacements - we just wanted the extra speed and auto duplex this machine provided.
The software provided for scanning is easy to use and very versatile. We haven't used the fax function yet. So far we are very pleased with the speed, auto duplex and scanning features and have had no driver issues using both XP and Vista.
It is a great machine for someone needing a heavy duty networked duplex capable machine.

CardScan Executive Card Scanner (Mac) Review

CardScan Executive Card Scanner (Mac)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fortunately, I was eligible for a $179 competitive upgrade direct from the manufacturer for an old CardScan Windows brick I found down in my basement in the box of orphaned peripherals. I had loved CardScan back in my Windows days, but had lost hope that they would come out with a Mac version. In the meantime, I had struggled with the kludgey I.R.I.S. business card scanner for mac and its flakey crapware that really didn't integrate with Mac Address Book all that well and had a horrible OCR recognition error rate and field parsing engine and seemed to run like it was written in Javascript.
Well, I'm happy that the Mac version of CardScan works flawlessly for me with a typical Mac setup (an Intel Mac Book Pro running 10.5.5.) and that setup was a snap. With some trepidation, I synched with my Address Book and no precious contact data was lost or damaged. I then scanned some business cards and it parsed the various fields with almost 100% accuracy, including some tricky company names in graphic logos, and put the data in a suggested "inspector" window. One click to verify (or change any fields with a linked zoom to the card pane view) and the new card data is in the CardScan database and then synched with your mac Address Book.
Couldn't be easier! Very satisfied user! While I'm not a frequent Amazon reviewer or any kind of computer expert, I wanted to post a counter review to the two negative reviews recently posted. While individual products and installations can sometimes be flaky and your mileage may vary, I found this CardScan product to be as good as I remember the Windows version being and better, because everything's better on a Mac (including Address Book being better than the fugly Outlook ecosystem).

The CardScan Executive for Mac User Interface and Business Card Scanner make it easy to capture and manage your valuable contact information. Featuring software designed from the ground up to work with features of the Mac Leopard OS, this system lets you consolidate contact information from business cards and electronic documents, including email signatures and web sites. In addition, this scanner makes it easy to sync contacts in your Address book, iPod, and iPhone to meet your on-the-go needs.
The easy-to-navigate UI was designed to maximize existing features of your Mac. View larger. Capture Contact Information The CardScan Executive scanner can scan up to 20 business cards a minute in color. Known for fast, accurate performance, the scanner works with native Mac software to help you convert the data on business cards into a digital form that's easy to use.
You can also use the CardScan software to consolidate contact information from electronic sources, including web sites and email signatures. With drag-and-drop performance, the CardScan makes creating a complete contact record as easy as highlighting the contact data you want, dragging it over the list area of the CardScan window, and releasing.
Designed to work with Mac OS 10.5.3+ (Leopard), the new easy-to-use CardScan interface combines Mac-specific design with many of the functions that have made CardScan for Windows an award-winning choice for business professionals. Updated CardScan sofware for Windows is also included in the Executive package, so you can be sure you'll have access to the version that meets your needs.
Manage Contacts With Ease Once your contacts are entered in the CardScan software, you can assign single or multiple customizable categories to each one. This makes it easy to sort contacts, view them in groups, and prepare lists of contacts for email or direct mail. Plus with the easy-to-use Print Wizard, creating custom envelopes, labels, and more is hassle-free. All this means that outreach projects get done faster and are easier to keep track of.
Using the "Batch Scan" feature to scan a whole stack of business cards at once lets you quickly assign several cards the same category or notes, saving you time. And when you can't remember someone's name, but you know what their business card looks like, the image view feature lets you fan through color images of all your scanned business cards.
Stay in Sync on the Move Keep your contact list up-to-date across the applications and mobile devices that you use on a daily basis. Since CardScan can be set up to sync automatically with Mac's Address Book, it's easy to keep the contact lists in your iPhone, iPod, and MobileMe network in synch, too. It's equally easy to export information as vCards (electronic business cards) to other software, including Microsoft Entourage.
All CardScan products offer a risk-free 30-day trial. And all new CardScan Executive systems include software for both Windows and Mac OS.

ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner Review

ScanSnap S510M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just received this scanner. I've been collecting a stack of documents to scan and finally ran out of excuses with its arrival. I settled in for a long evening of unpleasantness. I put the first batch of 6 pages into the hopper, pressed the Scan button expecting a sloooowww, painful grind. But....? Each sheet whipped through effortlessly! Both sides of the double sided sheets scanned on a single pass! Everything was oriented correctly and automatically and the legibility was excellent. How did they DO this? I'm used to scanning taking so long I continually forget what I'm doing before I'm done. This is a whole new experience. Suddenly, I'm seeing the real possiblity of reducing all my file cabinets to a few CDs in my lifetime. Wow.
This is about my 5th scanner (HP, Epson previously) but the very first one to take the agony out of scanning. And it's such a cute little machine. I never would have believed it could accomplish such a masterful job. It also handles legal sized documents - you fold the document in half, it scans both sides at once and marries them back together!
Thank heavens they brought this out for the Mac.

NeatReceipts Mobile Scanner and Digital Filing System for Mac Review

NeatReceipts Mobile Scanner and Digital Filing System for Mac
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received an advance-release of this product at WWDC08 in June 2008, and I've been playing with it ever since. It is top notch in every regard. The hardware is small and only uses the USB port [no need to find an A/C plug!]. The software is even better, as it grabs data right from the scanned receipt; no need for retyping in most cases!
This is a high quality product, and feels like something Apple has made, as even the packaging is tidy and well organized.
I highly recommend this over the currently offered shareware solutions. The software is really top notch, and the scanner is portable enough to fit in a laptop bag easily.

Canon CS5600F Color Image Scanner (2925B002) Review

Canon CS5600F Color Image Scanner (2925B002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just received it today and spent several hours with it. I am replacing an old $600 HP scanner with this and am very happy with the improvement so far.
I am using a dual boot XP 32bit / Vista 64bit configuration with 3.1gig amd x2 cpu and 4gig ram.So far it works perfectly under Vista 64bit. I downloaded the appropriate drivers and software and did not use the CD. Canon warns that it may not work with another USB cable, I tried a 6ft Belkin and it worked fine. The HP would not work with anything other than the short one they sent. The software and the front panel buttons work with no problems. I've had little problem learning the software without using the manual which is a good indication of how easy it is if you've some experience already. It scans negatives far better than the HP ever did. The photo scans are far better also. I like the software touch ups so far, but need a lot more time with it to have a final thought there. Thia scanner is far far better than the HP. I have a Cannon printer and have had no need to call their customer support so far. When I tried to get updated drivers for the Hp scanner, I and many others were told that they would not support Vista at all. Considering the $600+ cost of the scanner and the large number of them still in use, I feel that this shows the sorry state of HP's customer support. That is why I have gone over to Canon for both my printer and scanner. I'll not buy anything HP ever again.
