(More customer reviews)This is a very strange device. It comes with a power adapter and no place to plug the power adapter in. The instruction manual seems to imply there may be a cord (connector) and will be a sheet (that shows how to set it up), but no such connector cable was with it or sheet. The pin arrangement on the device seems at least to a certain degree, to be unique to the brand. If you want this particular device to work, you may end up buying a $50 cord. Even with that, how does it power up without a power port? I ended up getting a used Magtek from ebay and looking up the part numbers for the connector cable and power supply. It all came together and it can read checks.

(More customer reviews)I have been using this CardScan for a while now with Windows XP and it has proved to do an adequate job. However I recently changed to the Vista operating system and the scanner stopped working so I went looking for an downloadable update on the company website but was unable find any. I contacted CardScan by email and they replied that they indeed had an upgrade available but that I would have to pay $80 (plus S&H) for it. All of the other hardware vendors for other products I use with my computer (Dymo LabelWriter, Neat Receipts, etc) either offered a free downloadable Vista update or an update for a reasonable charge. Because of this I did not purchase the way overpriced CardScan upgrade and can now only give this otherwise good product two stars. I will not be purchasing another CardScan product in the future.

Corex CardScan Executive with Version 5.0 Software Review

(More customer reviews)I was originally very excited about this product and purchased two, one for myself and one for my brother. The CardScan will enable you to scan most of your business cards and save them in your system, thus having it all at your fingertips. The software is great, allowing you to assign categories to all the contacts, to search for contacts in various ways, and allowing export/import/transfer of data to and from PIMs, utility programs and even to PDAs. I use Outlook at work but I find the CardScan software to be more powerful for contact management.
The scanner works well most of the time. With the Auto Scan feature you can set your cards down and, if all goes right, come back later to verify the information. Cards are rapidly read and the images stored until you verify the accurate placement of the card information into the software fields.
This leads me to one of the major problems with the CardScan. Understandably it's difficult to account for all business card formats, with the contact info. being placed in all possible ways. Corex has not fully figured out how to ensure placement of the card info. into the software fields. Only about 50% of the time was most of the info. properly placed. Otherwise you'll have to go through and cut and paste into the correct fields.
The CardScan does not always cleanly scan the business cards. The software is designed to allow you to compare the scanned image of the card to the fields to which the info. was assigned. Good idea but doesn't work so well. To verify that the card was read properly, you'll have to keep your scanned cards with you. Of course, once it's verified you can put the cards away for good.
Two great features of the CardScan: (1) it allows you to scan the back of the business card and (2) you can make your own entries for those cards that are too difficult to read.

(More customer reviews)If you are a business professional, stay as far away from Neat Receipts as possible. As someone who relies on the scanning of documents and receipts for tax purposes I can tell you that this product is terrible. It has a lot of bugs. I have used it on an a high powered computer with XP. This software invariably freezes up often when you convert documents and receipts to PDF. And if you are scanning documents for tax purposes, be prepared for a lot of headaches as you will have to go to task manager and end the program and then start it up again and then locate the last folder where you scanned the file. As if that weren't enough the whole scanning process is very slow when you convert to PDF. And it doesn't end there as you have to correct the database often as it reads the totals wrong very often. It will invariably add an extra digit or read the dollar sign as a digit. Then comes the most unforgivable fault. It charges you to update your software just so that you can use your hardware on a newer operating system such as Windows 7. This is the first company that I have ever encountered that charges just to patch your software to work with the current operating system. It's like Delta and United Airlines charging a hundred and fifty dollars fee just to make a change to your flight. When that happened I just simply ditched them and went with another airline. In that case it was less costly to just purchase another ticket from another airline to go back home. Rather than being a sucker and paying Neat Receipts this extortion fee I decided to purchase a new scanner from another company that DOES NOT CHARGE a fee just to patch the software. I also want to add that Neat Receipts did not respond to my e-mails in regards to the ridiculous price to purchase the software. I will never purchase another Neat Receipts product and hope that you will not make the same mistake that I made.

Wacces MINI HANDY HAND-HELD PORTABLE SCANNER 600dpi Review

(More customer reviews)This is a great scanner. Very small and light. It works fast and the image quality is good. Some things to note: The batteries it came with were dead, leading me to believe intially that the product was faulty. But if this should happen to you, just pop in a fresh pair and you're good to go. Also, there is no internal memory for scanned items, so to do any scanning whatsoever, you need the SD card. Best get that along with purchasing the scanner.
The scanner is perfect for the office or quickly capturing an image or two off a book page, however, although small and thin, don't expect it to get into those hard to reach corners of large books. Though designed to get to most places other scanners cannot, to truly scan an entire book, you'll need to separate the binding in which case you'll be just as well off with a flat bed scanner. But the scanner is still a good accessory for the student on the go.
Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase and recommend this product.

CardScan Executive 700 Compact Business Card Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)I am glad I purchased my Cardscan 700, but there are some significant unfortunate missed opportunities and because of that some important functions cannot be done at all. My impression is that this is the best product on the market, due to its scanning properties, which are quite good. There are some serious deficiencies though in the rest of the software which would be nice to have fixed, and which in some cases render the device somewhat useless, since the output cannot be transferred to a useful place.
PROs: It does a pretty good job of scanning. The algorithm is well developed and is actually quite impressive. Even cards that catch and rotate as they go through, producing a funny smeared image, have some of their contents scanned correctly. The superiority of this recognition software is the strong point of this product. There is also an ok database management product that one can use to maintain and look up cards. Operationally the product is especially nice- I can just sit there feeding cards in and typing carriage return after each one, glancing at the screen to catch errors. The card image is retained in the record in the Cardscan database, which is important.
CONs: 1) the exit path has places that cards can hang up, and they can catch as they go through. This happens fairly often unless the card is new and flat, so part of the operation is to try to prevent that, by straightening out bent corners ahead of time, and by adding a little force keep the card from catching and rotating as one corner goes forward and the other is stuck. Quite needless- if the exit path was smooth and continuous, this wouldn't happen - the problem is in the rear of the plastic case. 2) Although the product retains the image of the business card, there's no way to pass that through to Outlook or export it to any other format. This is very unfortunate. I could laboriously do that by hand by cutting and pasting each one, except that Cardscan software does not permit copy / paste functions on the image. Why not? It's easy to implement. 3) Every time I start the program it harasses me about registering, even though I've been specific that I do not wish to. It also harasses me about logging in the online backup facility even though I've asked it not to do that. It therefore ignores the user wishes. 4) The data exchange function allows only extremely crude export to a file, in a simple text or csv format. There is no way to create an Outlook format .pst file, which would simplify importing, and allow for the future option of including an image. Outlook can hold an image in the comment section of the record, but apparently Cardscan folks aren't even close to thinking about this. 5) If I indicate that a data export for a file is destined for Outlook, the field names are not set up correctly, so unless I do some heavy editing of field names, nothing much other than the contact name gets across. If I export directly to the running Outlook program, it isn't perfect, but it's close enough to be usable. Why did Cardscan get one right and not the other?? In neither case can I send the card image over. 6) I was forced to install Microsoft .NET software even though I intended to do all my exports via files. I didn't get a choice- if I didn't install .NET, the installer stopped and exited without installing any Cardscan software.

(More customer reviews)If you collect business cards, then this is a cost effective way to get the data into your ACT!, Outlook or a number of other databases. You'll save money and have more accurate data.
The software parsing works unbelievably well. In lay terms parsing means that the software knows what is a company name and what is an email address and puts them into the right place, unless the font is highly graphical. The older models couldn't read white type on dark cards, but this one can. Also, once you receive it and have the box sitting on your desk, it seems intimidating to install, but it only takes about 1/2 hour to install so that the data goes automatically into ACT!.
I test alot of software/hardware products but most of them I return. The card scanner and the palm pilot are my two staples. This product I not only use but demo. It's very impressive. And years later clients thank me for having recommended it.

Visioneer CardReader 100 (CR1001D-WU) Review

(More customer reviews)I had to return this scanner because it did not capture text near the edges of most of the business cards, no matter what I tried (Calibrating, Re-Orienting and re-feeding the cards). Updating the scanner drivers with the website download did not help. Visioneer's online support is unacceptably awful. Also, the bundled OCR software is not up to the task. The trial version of Corex Cardscan which I loaded for comparison performed much better with more accurate text recognition and field placement.

Visioneer Strobe XP 300 Duplex Mobile Scanner PDF TWAIN (SXP3005D-WU) Review

(More customer reviews)I am a 10 year user of the Visioneer Strobe line of scanners. When my first one died, I purchased the cool new XP100. It was cool, but didn't work very well at all and I went back to the strobe. Now it was time to get a new scanner -- the XP 300. Sound promising, but I found they removed all kinds of features and there is a flaw in the paper return mechanism that they know about, but keep shipping the product. Firt, the paper return. When you push it to the open position, it is supposed to return the paper to you, but instead, it just keeps feeding the paper out the back rather than back to you. Visioneer reports this is a known problem, but still promote this feature in their manuals and marketing. As for the drivers, when you use the One Touch 4.0 driver, it uses a very old version of the Adobe Acrobat conversion utility (v.1.2). The issue with this is that when Paperport picks up the scan, it thinks all scans come in at 150dpi and 24bit color. The problem is that unless the image is at least 200dpi, Paperport won't let you manipulate the image in page view mode (rotate individual pages, despeckle, straighten, etc.). Also, they removed the ability to set the delay to begin automatically scanning. The issue is that it begins to scan so fast that it misfeed the top couple of inches of the paper and causes distorted scans at the top. Further, it is extrememly hard (as on the XP100) to get a piece of paper lined up quickly. With the old Stobes, the paper path was conducive to quickly inserting paper, but with the XP300, you have to align it perfectly or the paper guides snag the paper.
All of this creates too much frustration for me. I was advised to downgrade to the XP200, which retains all of the features and functionality of yesteryear. They really took two steps backwards with this product. It is a shame!

(More customer reviews)OK so the title is only half right I really can't type. That's why this little machine is a godsend.
I'm a computer builder and programmer by trade so I get lots of people who ask me what they should buy in the way of toys. Without question if you "collect" business cards this is a must have.
Installation is a no-brainer and the software is better than what would be expected. I would say that the export features in the software will take care of 99% of PIMS and DBF's that people frequently use.
Sure its a pain in the arse to verify every card you scan but once your collection is added you will only be doing a few a week and that's not so bad.
As with all current OCR that has to work with many fonts and styles you are going to get errors. The included OCR software really does a above average job of getting it right the first time. Better than my typing it in that's for sure.
Another nice feature is that you get a stored copy of your card you scanned. Why is that important? If your eyesight is going like mine, seeing the card at 300% resolution for correction is far easier than reading 6 point type from people who feel they need a life story on a business card.
I could go on and on but this is a top notch product. So why only 4 stars?
Until OCR can get it right 10 out of 10 times I can't say its perfect. This unit is pretty darn close though and well worth the money.

Visioneer StrobePro Sheetfed Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)GOOD review follows! First, this is NOT the best choice for PERFECT scans of photos or fragile documents. It does a perfectly adequate job with snapshots and newspaper clippings, an EXCEPTIONAL job with color or B/W letter-size material. It scans for fliing/fax, OCR or color images, up to 600 DPI.
If you are careful, you can easily feed sheets into this device without trouble. Be patient. It has an included software application that allows scanning multiple succesive sheets to one document, for convienence...but you can separate the pages later! Cool. Or you can group different scans to one document later. Cooler!
The image editing software is pretty darn good. Why? Because it has a decent selection of tools while not being overly complicated to use. You can use it as a desktop-type filing system too.
Some versions of the "Paperport" software export scans to PDF! If you understand what that means, you'll jump for joy...
But you know where the Strobe REALLY excels? You can quickly scan a document, drag it to Word and have about 95% immediately recognized as an editable Word file. Very little re-typing. How many times do you need some information IN your computer at school or work that exists only in a printed form? Wow! And you did this in about 30 seconds...
The Strobe is not perfect, but it does many jobs well enough to overlook that it is not the best solution of any ONE job. But it's the 90% solution for a TON of jobs! Buy it. You will not regret it.

Iriscan Anywhere 2 Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this scanner hoping for a reasonable Windows 7 compatible solution for trying to a keep a paper-less home office with regards to personal papers. I have a Fujitsu ScanSnap with IRIScan software which was wonderful for fast multi-sheet high quality scanning straight to PDF on Windows XP, but almost immediately obsolete when Vista came out and turned out to have terrible customer service. I also have an HP LaserJet all-in-one which does great quality JPGs at a very slow rate. So when IRIScan offered a great sale I tried out their new Anywhere 2 scanner.
Pros:
- Portability: It does scan without being plugged into a computer or the wall. This is wonderful when I'm going through the backlog of mail and other debris that accumulates in our kitchen.
- Compatibility: Because the SD card can pull out and be put in a card reader, and you can hook up the scanner to a computer via USB and have it recognized just as a USB drive, it will continue to be useful even when operating systems change.
- Software Compatibility: The software does run on Windows 7 64 bit as advertised (as well as on other operating systems).
Cons:
- Poor scan resolution. Although the JPG files are the same size as those created for the same document from my HP scanner, the quality is much poorer. When I print the document back out there is highly visible pixilation. The documents are still usable, but are closer to a poor photo-copy.
- Poor scan brightness. Documents printed on white paper and scanned come out with a gray background. Pictures scanned come out too dark to see all parts of the photo. The scans also show every little wrinkle in a piece of paper.
- Marginal battery life. I fully charged the scanner, unplugged it and started working through my backlog of mail. I scanned roughly 20 pages over 2-3 hours, with the scanner powering off automatically after timeouts between scans. By the end of the 2 hours the scanner was declaring low battery. Standby shouldn't take too much battery, so this suggests it may only make it ~30 pages before the battery dies.
- Picky sheet feeder. If the edge of a paper is bent at all, it's incredibly difficult to get it to feed in. And while you're trying to get the paper to catch, the wheels are turning and the feeder is counting that as part of the page scan. So when I had one page finally catch after 2 seconds, it scanned 2/3 of the page then stopped with the paper still in the scanner.
- Doesn't scan anything larger than 8 1/2 x 11.
- No multi-sheet feeder.
- Notable delay (10+ seconds?) while saving one scan before it can start the next.
- The software to convert JPGs to PDF (as well as Word and other formats) must be done one document at a time. The version that came with my ScanSnap could be set to automatically convert any PDF that landed in a directory to an OCR, text-searchable PDF. It would be great if there were a similar "convert everything" option for the Iriscan Pro 12 software so all the documents I scan could be quickly converted to PDFs.
I will probably keep the scanner, because the portability and convenience of something compatible with my computer will make the difference on me keeping up with all the paperwork around here. But it really is a poor substitute for the ScanSnap, and there is no way I will ever scan photos on this.
