Xerox DocuMate 515 Flatbed Color Scanner Review

Xerox DocuMate 515 Flatbed Color Scanner

I purchased a Xerox Documate 515 on Feb. 26, 2010 as my old Visoneer 9450 is not compatible with Windows 7 - nor will it be. The Documate 515 was recommended as a compatible replacement. Read all the literature and ordered it. Arrived in quick order. Due to a heavy traveling schedule however, it was not installed until March 26th. I Flatbed scanned a test a page and it scanned just fine. I did not however use the ADF to scan multiple pages. I registered the product this very day - March 26th, 2010. Back to a heavy traveling schedule and the Scanner was not used again to scan even one document after its initial set-up on March 26th, until early April. I noticed that it would frequently "freeze" half way through a page. Had to turn it off and try again. Sometimes it would scan sometimes it would freeze - more often it "Froze".
Multiple page scans would freeze after the very first page. Most frustrating. Called Visioneer who recommended the scanner as a likely Visoneer 9450 replacement. They referreed me to PaperPort - manuafacture of the software used to scan my documents. They referred me to Xerox. Called Xerox on April 8th, 2010. They suggested I try connecting it to a Laptop and see if that corrected the problem. IT consultant was next scheduled for and came April 14th and we did just that, connected the USB cable to a laptop - still freezes with great regularity. Have to pull the page out of the scanner after turning it off and then on again.
Called Xerox tech support on April 14th - how long is the USB cable they asked? 10 feet I said. That is probably the problem they informed - try a 4 foot cable. At four feet the scanner has to damn near sit on top of the computer and if not on top, I have virtually no place to put the scanner anywhere near the computer. This corrected the problem completely - single sheet, multile page scans - no freezing. I informed Xerox Tech Support that my Visoneer was working just fine with a 12 foot USB cable with virtually no problems. USB 2.0 Specifications is 5 METERS I informed and that four feet is just barely over 1 METER. The requirement to use a 4 four cable was NO where in their literature and had I known this I never would have purchased this product. I was then informed that ALL Xerox Scanners require a four foot USB Cable - "might" work with a 6 foot but that's a "might" they informed.
Unacceptable - It is now April 14th and I am "Out of Warranty" for something I was never informed of - a four foot cable requirment. Nothing they could, or "would" do for me. Purchase a Xerox Sanner if you will - personally, I will never purchase another Xerox product of any kind for fear of what they don't tell me in their literature and also for their total lack of customer care.

Epson Expression 10000XL- Graphic Arts Scanner Review

Epson Expression 10000XL- Graphic Arts Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this recently because I wanted to upgrade from my old scanner, the Microtek 9800XL large format scanner.
I create highly detailed scratchboard line art and wanted a scanner that could capture the best possible scans of my work, which I can color digitally and send out to clients in electronic form. (I wasn't confident that my old scanner was doing the job as well as I hoped for.) Both the new and the old scanner are large format but the Epson 10000Xl is more than twice the cost of the Microtek 9800XL. Do I think the upgrade is worth it? Without a doubt.
Here is a list of cons associated with the Microtek that made me take the risk to upgrading:
1. Quirky driver. Sometimes the software could not find the installed driver and I had to restart the computer several times before it would work.
2. Microtek support is practically useless.
3. Very noisy operation
4. Scans required a lot of post production to arrive at the best capture of detail between dark and light tones. I had to scan in grayscale @ 1200dpi, make adjustment with Photoshop before converting to bitmap. With this scanner, the B&W bitmap scanning option was not capturing all the details.
The Epson, in comparison, has been a joy to own. Not only are the results much better, but the unit scans straight to B&W bitmap flawlessly, saving me time in post processing. I do need to clean the scan from unwanted specs but that is still a 50% reduction of time spent getting it optimized. The unit is also much quieter, has a slightly larger scan area, and built with superior design and parts. The lid stays open when raised at an angle whereas the Microtek was a slave to gravity.
After owning it about a month, there have been no problems to report. Since my livelihood relies on the quality of the images I produce, its a good investment and well worth the cost.

Scan speeds are as high as 2.7 ms/line (at 1,200 dpi), while an optional automatic document feeder allows you to scan multiple sheets at a time. You can zoom in 1% increments anywhere from 50% to 200%.
The software bundle includes a variety of applications to help you easily achieve the best scan results possible. The 10000XL connects to your computer via its standard USB and Firewire ports, and an optional network adapter lets you use the scanner as a network device. The AC 100-120V power supply consumes less than 55 watts during normal operation and about 6 watts while in sleep mode. NeatReceipts Mobile Scanner and Digital Filing System for Mac Review

NeatReceipts Mobile Scanner and Digital Filing System for Mac
Average Reviews:

I received an advance-release of this product at WWDC08 in June 2008, and I've been playing with it ever since. It is top notch in every regard. The hardware is small and only uses the USB port [no need to find an A/C plug!]. The software is even better, as it grabs data right from the scanned receipt; no need for retyping in most cases!
This is a high quality product, and feels like something Apple has made, as even the packaging is tidy and well organized.
I highly recommend this over the currently offered shareware solutions. The software is really top notch, and the scanner is portable enough to fit in a laptop bag easily.

USB Automatic Barcode Scanner Scanning Barcode Bar-code Reader with Hands Free Adjustable Stand (Black) Review

USB Automatic Barcode Scanner Scanning Barcode Bar-code Reader with Hands Free Adjustable Stand (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
--Setup--
It just works, plugged it into a Mac mini, closed the "Identify Keyboard" window and immediately began scanning barcodes.
--Accessories--
The hands-free stand works well. I needed a stationary, hands-free scanner, which is why I bought this one. Long cable, longer than what I need, but I'm sure others are happy for this (if you're gonna be limited by a cable, who really cares how long it is anyway?)
--Usability--
I got this for scanning tracking documents at my work. In my situation, the barcodes are all similar -- six numeric characters encoded in a "Code128" barcode. The barcode is printed about 1 inch (25mm) wide on our tracking sheets. This scanner does a decent job with these barcodes, however I'm a little disappointed because it's usually difficult to get a good angle for the scanner to read the code. Unfortunately we don't use the hands-free stand as we had planned because the user almost always has to twist the scanner around at different angles while moving it closer and further away from the reading surface until it finally reads our code. Just as a note, we have a different laser barcode scanner that reads these exact same codes instantly from any angle (wish I could find another one of those).
If anyone has different experience with *instant* code reading please share. I'm not talking about "pretty quick" either; I mean as *soon* as the laser crosses every bar on that code, it should *instantly* beep (record) the code... that's just not the case with this thing.

Pandigital PANSCN01 PhotoLink Mini Scanner (Black) Review

Pandigital PANSCN01 PhotoLink Mini Scanner (Black)
Average Reviews:

When I saw this product it struck me as a wonderful item. I could rapidly scan all of my old photos and not take days doing it. I read reviews where people reported white lines appearing on the scanned photos. Well, mine did have them. There was no rhyme or reason to it either. I could scan a photo and not have any lines in it, then scan it again and have 1 line, 4 lines. I never knew what it was going to do. I did follow the instructions and calibrated the device, cleaned it, etc. The lines still showed up. Seeing it for myself I find the lines to be unacceptable. I wanted to digitize my old photos to keep them from wear and signs of age. Not scan them and have artifacts in the finished product that weren't there when I started. The time saved using this device compared to using a flatbed scanner for photos is not enough to overlook this fault.

Canon 2454B002 imageFORMULA DR-2010C Compact Color Scanner Review

Canon 2454B002 imageFORMULA DR-2010C Compact Color Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
this could be a great product. It's affordable, it does duplex, and it's fast. Shortly after I started using it however, on multi-page scans some of the pages were blurry to the point of being unusable. I got a message that the page feeding assembly needed changing out, so I ordered a new assembly and changed it out, but with no improvement. So there seems to be a problem with the feeding mechanism, so some scans are blurry. This is a major problem. If it weren't for that defect, which I don't know if it's just my machine or widespread, it would be a great scanner.
This is a few weeks later. I am still having problems with the feeding mechanism, even after replacing it. I actually get more useful scanning out of my all-in-one Canon mf-6550. I love Canon, but I am not having a good experience with this dedicated scanner.

Wolverine F2D 35mm Film to Digital Image Converter with 2.4-Inch LCD and TV-Out Review

Wolverine F2D 35mm Film to Digital Image Converter with 2.4-Inch LCD and TV-Out
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Recently ended up with several thousand family 35 mm slides and promised my brothers I would scan the slides and create a digital collection for each one of them. Received the scanner and after a bit of reading, had the slide scanner up and working relatively quickly. Previously I scanned on an HP Scanjet 5470 and the process was slow and not the best copy quality. I am finding that of the slides I have scanned so far with the Wolverine scanner, they are all coming out on the dark side and require work to optimize contrast, etc. Many of the slides that are winter shots are washing out as if the light source in the scanner is not consistent across the surface. No amount of processing with software has, so far, taken the scanned images to an acceptable image. If I had to do it over, I would invest in a better scanner.

Canon PIXMA MP495 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One (4499B026) Review

Canon PIXMA MP495 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One (4499B026)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The PIXMA MP495 is a fine printer with all-in-one features and WiFi capabilities. The driver and software installation, however, did not go so smoothly (Windows 7 x64). I can't imagine a layman going through the difficulty I went through getting WiFi working with this printer. But once it's configured, it works quite well.
Document Printing:
Funny enough, this is probably the least interesting part of the all-in-one. There's not much that can be said in this category. The MP495 is a very competent document printer with all the features you'd find in any inkjet printer. Paper loads from the back, so it's a bit more intuitive which side of the paper will be printed on, but it also means you need more space heightwise.
Photo Printing:
As a photo printer, the MP495 is both fast and high quality. I found that the supplied 'Photo Paper Plus Glossy II' sample paper outperformed some HP photo paper I had. And the MP495 outperformed another HP photosmart 385 printer I have in both speed and quality. So I am quite pleased with the performance here as I find this to be one of the major draws of this device. Canon claims about 86 photos from one Color ink cartridge. I have not owned the printer long enough to verify the accuracy of their claim.
Scanning:
I don't scan very often, but it's a very useful feature to have when you need it. In a scanner I look for speed, image quality and usable software. I'm quite pleased with the MP495's scanner capabilities. My test involved a sheet from a notepad that had a light gray watermark-like background. The scanner picked it up no problem. From initialization to scan completion took approx. 20 seconds, which I find adequate. There's a scan button on the printer, but pressing it doesn't do anything if the printer is hooked up via WiFi.
WiFi:
One of the main draws of this printer is its wifi capabilities. But since the printer has no controls on the device itself for configuring the connection to your likely secured WiFi access point, it must be configured through software installed on one of the computers on the network. Configuring the WiFi was a bit tricky. After repeated failed attempts, I figured out that the trick is to plug the USB cable (which they call a WiFi configuration cable) in at precicely the right point during setup -- during the detection phase. Plugging it in too soon seems to cause it to fail -- and I waited the first few times too. Regardless, this will no doubt be a hurdle for novices trying to configure this printer. I suggest having a competent computer person around while configuring the WiFi connection on this printer. With that being said, not having to have the printer close enough to my computer for the USB cable to reach is fantastic.
Software:
The software is not very impressive but adequate. There's a utility for managing your scans and OCR text conversion and all that good stuff. Canon boasts an automatic scanning feature that automatically detects the type of document being scanned. I tested it out and it seems to work well as far as being convenient. The software however lacks ability to open the file location in Explorer or even open the file using the default application. So that's quite annoying.
Included with the software is "MyPrinter" utility that allows you to connect to the printer and configure various options. It seems like nothing more than a shortcut to the printer properties utility included with windows. There's no options for configuring the WiFi connection in this utility. You must use the Setup program to do that -- something I find rather annoying since this is something you should easily be able to access without having to pop in the driver disc or dig up the setup utility.
If you decide to go with the Easy install instead of the custom install, the setup utility will dump some annoying shortcut toolbar application called Menu something or other. I removed it right quick.
There's also something Canon calls "Web Print Ex" which allows you to change the layout of web pages to print them out better. I didn't test this software out.
Cost:
At around $80, half the cost of this printer is in the ink. On Amazon, the ink for this printer seems to run around $17 for Black and $18 for Color. Canon reveals the following for ink life:
Black Ink Tank LifeBlack: 220 pages (PG-510), 401 pages (optional PG-512)¹
Black: 2955 photos* (PG-510), 7275 photos* (optional PG-512)²
* Estimated supplemental yield
Colour Ink Tank LifeColour: 244 pages (CL-511), 349 pages (optional CL-513)¹
Colour: 83 photos (CL-511), 122 photos (optional CL-513)²
Note that I found this info on Canon's European site. The actual cartridge models are PG-210 and CL-211.
So even with those numbers, which are probably the upper bound, you're looking at around 19 cents per photo plus cost of paper. While the photo quality is excellent, I've ordered prints online for around 5 cents per photo. So the ink here is certainly expensive.
Conclusion:
Pros
- Wifi
- Quiet and fast scanner
- High quality and fast printing
- Reasonable purchase price
Cons
- Expensive ink
- Clunky software
- Lack of LCD for independent configuration
Rating the device itself on its merits alone, I give it 4 stars. Whether that ink cost is a major deterrent to you is really up to you.

Brother MFCJ615w Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner, Copier & Fax Review

Brother MFCJ615w Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Usually I'd have bought this MFC from Amazon. However due to a sale it was less expensive to purchase at my local box store. My cost was under $70 for the unit, and it was well worth it.
This is a network MFC, and can connect as wired or wireless to a home or small business network. There is bundled software for Mac and PC operating systems. I have been able to install and get full functionality with Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP PC's and MAC laptops. If you don't wish to run this as a network MFC, it will also work well as a USB MFC attached directly to a PC.
Bundled with this unit is a free copy and license for Paperport 11. Paperport helps to organize scanned documents. It isn't fantastic software, but it is nice to have bundled with this printer. Also included is the Brother control center, which is software unique to Brother that helps control the MFC functions (such as scan a picture, or use OCR to process a document). For Mac's Presto PageManage is available with this printer. I haven't use this product, and don't know how it compares to Paperport.
Printer status and problems can be reported to any PC configured to accept status information via the Brother status monitor. If paper is out, or ink is low, a warning can either be popped up, or shown as an icon on the system tray (at least in Windows, how exactly this would work with Mac OS I do not know). If your printer is in another room, being able to see it's status from a distant PC is helpful.
On standby the MFC-J615W uses only 3.5 watts, other similar devices seem to use more power. Low power use is a good reason to consider this MFC unit.
It ships well packed, and is easy to open and set up. The ink is in sealed packages that tear open without the need for any scissor or knife. Most of the unpack and set up centers around removing tape and plastic that is just about everywhere. There are a few hard plastic pieces that must be removed to clear the inkjet cartridge insert area and to release the bottom paper drawer to open. The default for the paper drawer is to have very small paper (4" picture size paper), it needed to be adjusted (which is easy) to hold 8.5 x 11" copy paper. It prints on copy paper without issue.
The paper tray is a bit flimsy, it is made of thin plastic. The paper output handling is not great, which is why one star was removed. There is a slide out catch which is a thin 2" wide piece of plastic in the center of the output page, it doesn't work 100% of the time, and is extremely flimsy. Occasionally paper will fly out the front of the printer. The catch can't handle more than about 10 or so pieces of paper, if printing a lot, someone must go to the printer to grab pages out, or paper will be on the floor. If set up on a table or other area, make certain there is no airflow and provide ample room for the paper to fall to the front of the printer and remain in some order. This is useful only for very small, proximal workgroups or in homes, mostly due to the limited output paper handling.
Prints are not as vivid on standard copy paper as I'd have hoped. Colors look a bit washed. Recently I tried non-Brother picture paper and the colors came out looking great. To get vivid colors out of this printer requires high quality paper, without it, the colors are a bit bland. However for the price, and as a basic utility printer, this is very acceptable. I almost exclusively use inexpensive copy paper as the colors and quality of the print from this printer on regular 20 lb copy paper is more than acceptable to me.
There are vivid option and fine options which can be selected as defaults or per print, these greatly improve the overall quality of prints on any paper, but also increase the time to print each page. Color does look better on inkjet specific paper than on standard copy paper. Reasonably small point type can be read (7-8 point) without having to use the high resolution feature on regular copy paper or high quality inkjet paper. Pages print reasonably fast at the default setting, but no where near the rated speed from the description, more like 2-3 pages per minute.
There is a low resolution option and ink save option, I haven't used these. The low resolution option may get something close to the rated speed, but would probably only be good enough for drafts. In my home we don't print a lot of reports a day, and there isn't much need to get super fast prints. Also the large input tray only holds 100 pages of 20 lb copy paper, there is a smaller picture paper tray that seems to hold 10-12 blank pictures. 3rd party ink is readily available and inexpensive, there doesn't seem to be a need to try and conserve ink. My cost per page is about a cent or less for ink.
Set up for network printing and scanning is easy, the ethernet connection can be wired or wireless, as there is a built in fax machine with a touch tone keyboard, entering in a wireless password was easy (just type the number 2 multiple times to scroll through a, b, c, A, B, C, 2, and so on for each digit / number you need). WEP, WPA, AES, TPIK are all supported. Wireless range seemed reasonable but not stellar.
Network scans permit files to be sent to a PC with appropriate Brother software installed. You can select which PC to send a scan to at the MFC, or you can load the ADF (automatic document feeder) or flatbed and got to a PC then directly request a scan from the PC to pull a document in. Either way it was easy to scan. The ADF is also flimsy, and doesn't seem to hold the rated 15 pages, more like 8-10. So far paper handling of the ADF has been reasonable, there have been no jams, but occasionally a sheet will go a bit too far to one side and need to be rescanned.
A nice surprise with this MFC, and if I understand correctly with just about all newer MFC's is there is no longer a bulb warm up delay. My old scanner waited a minute or two when inserting something to scan for the bulb to warm up. The newer scanners with LED bulbs no longer need to delay before scanning, this allows a fax or scan of an item just about instantly. There is no longer any need to wait for a bulb to warm up.
Faxes can be sent to a PC on your LAN, without being printed. This permits you to save paper, and review a fax before printing. Over the years I've had several fax MFC's, and this is by far the best with my VOIP service. I have yet to have a fax at normal resolution fail using my VOIP provider (Ooma).
There is a nice LCD display on the front, which is backlit and in color, it is easy to read and can tilt. It offers status and set up information and makes using this MFC in stand alone mode very easy. It also helped when setting up wireless.
I have installed the free Brother iprint / iscan app on my Android phone (this app exists for Android and iPhones in their respective marketplaces), it permits these phones to print wirelessly to the J615W printer and also to scan documents to this printer. Unfortunately it only seems to work with pictures from the camera, it would be nice to print downloaded .doc, .pdf and even full web pages. Prints are reasonably fast, but seem to be fixed to the size of the photo. You can set the size of the image by the selected page size. The Brother phone application will enlarge the print to fit. 8.5 x 11 prints are borderless from the phone. There is a problem with very high resolution images, I got an internal error pop up when printing from my Android using the highest resolution. A crop or another picture at the standard (not the highest) resolution solved the problem. It seems like a bug or problem with the Android app. Still it's nice to be able to get direct prints from my phone.
Ink cartridges from 3rd parties are inexpensive, and the cost per page is very low. There are refillable 3rd party cartridges readily available. Brother brand cartridges seem to be a pain to refill, but there are numerous inexpensive 3rd party cartridges, some refillable, the cartridge size you will want is LC61. After 2 months of ownership, I have printed 137 pages of which 130 were color. On average my ink cartridges are more than 50% full. I'd estimate at least 200 pages per cartridge based on my personal use. I bought full cartridges from a store at Amazon (the printer ships with sample cartridges). The cost was $12.50 with free shipping for 3 of each cartridge. I estimate my cost for ink per page will be about 2 cents or less with the J615W. There are refillable cartridges which I may investigate later, for now the printer does a sufficient job and 2 cents per page is reasonable to me based on sparse printing.
If you want a modern, networked, capable inkjet MFC, this is a very good bargain in my opinion. The J615W is low profile, consumes very little electrical power, is reasonably fast, prints nice pictures, is inexpensive to purchase, is inexpensive to operate, hasn't jammed for me in 4 weeks of ownership, and works well with an Android or iPhone.
Note, this is mostly for a home with a small network and a few computers / laptops, or a small businesses, the paper capacity is limited, there is no letter feeder, paper handling is limited, but up to legal paper can be printed and scanned. Envelopes can be printed, but the entire tray has to be removed and replaced with envelopes. An envelope slot would have been appreciated.
The Brother control and status monitor software is very good, and lets me know when paper is out, remote configuration also works well, each button on the printer can be assigned to a program on my PC, for example when sending a picture instead of sending a .png or .jpg, I elected to send a .pdf so multiple pictures could be scanned at once and put in a single file on my PC. I am able to select which...Read more›

HP Scanjet G4050 Photo Scanner (L1957A#B1H) Review

HP Scanjet G4050 Photo Scanner (L1957A#B1H)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a husband and father of 3 young children with lots of pre-digital photos of our children, along with perhaps a couple of thousand old family photos dating back to the 1930s. Like many, I narrowed the search for a scanner to the Canoscan 8800f, The Epson V500, and the HP G4050. There have been a number of reviews that have focused on scanning negatives and slides. My review will focus on scanning photos.
There are numerous reviews of these 3 scanners. Throwing out the highs and the lows, the Epson generally gets excellent scan quality reviews, with some mention of buggy drivers and flimsy slide and negative accessories. The Canon gets pretty good reviews on build quality and photo scan quality and most people seem to think its software has a cleaner interface. The HP is seen as the most ruggedly built and the largest in size, but is viewed as performing slowly and having software that is either difficult to make work under Vista (apparently that has now been fixed by HP with full drivers being released) or buggy with a lot of effort with HP tech support being needed to fix things (though once fixed) the scanner gets excellent reviews on photo scan quality.
I saw the Epson, Canon, and HP scanners at a couple of local retailers and had the opportunity to at least compare their build quality. The Epson feels inexpensively made (very much so), the Canon feels fairly well made, and the HP appears to be the best built of the 3 scanners, by a fair margin. The HP is big, but it has a slightly larger scanning area to allow for 4 4x6 photos to be scanned at once. Plus, photos from my parents and grandparents are all odd little sizes, so having a little extra space on the glass is helpful when trying to scan multiple photos.I
My system: AMD 4000 dual core, 3 gig of ram, a 500 gig hard drive and a 320 gig hard drive, standard video card, running XP. A decently powered system, but not super fast. I am a fairly experienced computer user and have really gotten into Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements over the last year or two. They are not commercial applications, but over the past year I have come to see they are pretty powerful programs and allow the home user to get genuinely professional level results for family projects.
The comparison: the Epson, Canon, and HP are in the same price range, but they can very by more than $50 depending upon sales, rebates, and promotions. It seems to be generally accepted that the next step up is the Epson V700 or V750, about $500 and $700, respectively.
I purchased the HP, returned it, purchased the Canon, returned it, and then re-purchased the HP. The Canon was not a bad scanner and is in fact pretty speedy. The Canon and the Epson use LED lighting, which is quicker than the HP lighting. This does make a definite difference, but fast or slow is a subjective opinion for these scanners. I use my scanner at night when the children are asleep. I am scanning and restoring family photos; so, I am in no rush. I don't want to have a scanner that is super slow, but I do not mind if the scanner is not fast. That is a good thing, because the Canon is quick and the HP is definitely not. The Canon software is a bit easier to use, but the HP, while not super easy is fairly straightforward to use once you play with it for a bit.
The HP is noisy, though. Will it wake my children and wife? No, but both HP scanners (the one I returned and the one I kept) from different sellers sounded the same. The output from the scanners also is the same, which at least says something for manufacturing consistency.
The scan quality is what did it for me. To compare I scanned a few old black and white photos and a few color photos, in particular a few wedding prints that have a slight matte finish. As most people know who scan photos matte finishes make the resulting scan noisy and "speckly" to a varying degree. I found the HP scanned matte photos significantly better than the Canon--the difference was fairly substantial. I also found that I preferred the HP scans. A few reviews on the web have stated the g4050's scans may be a bit oversaturated in terms of color, but I feel the scans are quite good and often are actually an improvement from the picture without actually taking anything away from the picture in terms of detail or resolution.
I found the HP and Canon scanned the black and white photos comparably, but the color scans are what made me decide to return the Canon.
I have had luck with HP products. I have an HP B8350 wide format printer. It is an excellent no frills genuine professional quality printer. I also have an HP Officejet multifunction printer/scanner/fax/copier. It is a few years old and continues to work extremely well. Having said that, I also have experienced buggy HP software, tech support that is obviously outsourced to India with both excellent support personnel and pretty poor support personnel. HP tech support, though, has pretty extended hours (both live by telephone and live chat) and while it can be frustrating to talk with someone who obviously is reading from a script I have found on the few occasions I have called that my problem gets fixed and most tech support personnel are nice and genuinely want to help resolve the issue.
As I have become more serious and discriminating in my photo and video work wherein I really am looking to get as high quality output as possible I think I have come to be able tell the difference between good quality and excellent quality at the hobbyist/prosumer level.
Photo scanning is a niche product line. Most people are happy with their multi-function devices and are not looking to output professional level work. As such, while frustrating, it is not surprising that Epson, Canon, and HP have cut corners in their scanning products in terms of software and support. None of the scanners, especially at this price point, is without a compromise. I felt, however, that the HP g4050 was the best built unit, and while a bit slow, produces great scans. The HP software is not quite as new or fresh, but it works for me and the scanner is very well built (at least the parts I can see and touch!!) and the resulting scans truly are excellent.
Oh, the 6 color scanning is extremely slow and does not produce in my opinion any discernable improvement. That makes some sense, though, since I have read that the 6 color scanning feature is for use when scanning photos printed from ink jets or items such as ribbon or artwork. This because these items are produced with inks and materials that are not as easily scanned by traditional scanners.
I did not try the Epson, but for me the HP was a winner over the Canon.
Good luck in your choice.
***UPDATE 12/15/2008***
I continue to really enjoy this scanner. It is not made for a high volume environment, but rather the serious hobbyist/prosumer in particular looking to scan old photos for retouching, family photos, home projects, etc. You can obtain legitimate professional results in this area. I am sure that getting a much higher end scanner may enable you to obtain some additional range to parts of photos (like shadow detail--but the HP is quite good in this area), but I think if you were doing high end professional/publishing work you likely would be looking at the more expensive Epsons (i.e., V750) or a dedicated slide scanner.
I use Photoshop Elements, though may upgrade to CS4, but I think Elements and this scanner make a great combination and will allow you to really do some nice projects.
The build quality of the HP is significantly better than the similarly priced Canon and Epson models.
I am still very happy I made the choice to stick with the HP.
********************UPDATE JULY 10, 2009***************************
I continue to enjoy the scanner. It has worked very well. It works with Vista 64 Home Premium without any problems. It also works well with Photoshop CS4.
I have been scanning slides for a friend for a "family picture" project. I have scanned 16 at a time (the max you can scan at one time) and the scanner works extremely well. On my new Intel based 2.67 ghz Quad Core with 8 gb RAM slide scanning is reasonably speedy. A high end dedicated slide scanner might have some more depth in the shadows, but I am very happy with the results.
I simply do not think any other scanner can touch the G4050 for the price.

Searchable PDF scanner (WorldocScan 400) Review

Searchable PDF scanner (WorldocScan 400)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
the day after i ordered this i went to manufacturer website only to learn that this scanner only allows you to use it on ONE COMPUTER. if you want to install it on another computer you have to BUY a license. I wanted to use it when i travel with laptop but if installed on home desktop
i would NOT be able to use on laptop WITHOUT ANOTHER LICENSE.
no where here in the ad does it mention that fact. contacted copusa but they had shipped and i was told to just refuse the ups shipment when it came, which i did, so they are returning to shipper.
lets see how fast compusa gives refund
meanwhile i ordered pandigital scanner which works like a dream and which i can install on a billion computers if i choose.

Canon imageFORMULA P-150 Portable Document Scanner (Scan-tini) Review

Canon imageFORMULA P-150 Portable Document Scanner (Scan-tini)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Good points:
--Small, I can easily carry it to and from work
--Acts in stand-alone mode (no drivers required)
--Fast, quiet, duplexes
--"Skip blank page" works fine
--Feeds almost anything. I'm archiving family records now--feeds almost anything up to 100-year-old letters, card stock, stacks of photos.
--TWAIN and ISIS drivers, that the Fujitsu does not have
--Paper path is less angled than an all-in-one ADF's 180 degrees.
--Easy to clear paper jam
--Deskew generally works, but not always. I scan a stack of veiably-sized items, so I often do not use the paper guides. It's pretty gppd about keeping things straight.
Bad points:
--Does not like onionskin paper
--Takes 2 USB ports unless I want to pay $35 for an AC adapter
--Black-and-white (1 bit) mode does not really like anything except crisp black test. Typewritten text, of which I have reams, does not come in well, I scan in grayscale or color. Have not played with the sensitivity
--No output tray
--I'm not at all pleased with the quality of scanned photos, but I suppose that's to be expected. I have an Epson Perfection for that.
--Scanner software will handle only a few variations. Button can be assigned only to one
--Will only scan to 14" long
Have not tried OCR
I like it. I'm glad I bought it.

Very hard wooking little scanner. Very thin. You could easily carry this in a computer bag on trips and use in a hotel room. Resonably quick to scan a document page. Comes with a CD program to install that is fairly easy to understand.I got it working in about 10 minutes. I like the fact that there is no extra power source needed-the power comes thru the cable that connects scanner to USB port. This scanner will only scan regular size 8 x 11 pages and NOT the legal size. Scans pictures very nicely. Good for the money.

Visioneer Ultra-Slim OneTouch 7400 USB Photo Scanner (74007D-WU) Review

Visioneer Ultra-Slim OneTouch 7400 USB Photo Scanner (74007D-WU)
Average Reviews:

For 4 years, I've owned a Visioneer 7300 VISIONEER 73007DWU SCANNER VISIONEER 7300 1200 DPI, which is the immediate predecessor to the 7400. The 7400 has essentially the same specs and appearance as the 7300. The difference? Only the 7400 supports Vista.
Pro: it works OK in light duty home service- I use it mostly for imaging receipts and so on for TurboTax and Quicken. But there are 2 Cons:
1) closing Quicken always generates an error from the Visioneer software complaining about qw.exe - it's benign except for having to close the dialog box each time
2) Visioneer has no plans to update the 7300 driver to spport Vista- will the 7400 be similarly stranded in 2 years or so when MS replaces Vista?

HP G4010 ScanJet Photo Scanner Review

HP G4010 ScanJet Photo Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed this hardware on a new computer running Win'XP so I had nothing that first needed to be uninstalled. I chose the non-standard installation because I did not want HP's photo editing software (I have Adobe Photoshop Elements and Photoshop Album) and I have no use for the IRIS software for converting scanned documents into text files. The installation went smoothly and my document and 35mm slide scans were successful at the first attempt. 35mm slides can be scanned either mounted or unmounted. The scanner seems exceptionally easy to use and is a huge improvement over the ten year old scanner that it replaces. Everything about the scanner's appearance reflects very high quality and so far I am very satisfied indeed. The documentation that comes with the scanner is very limited, sufficient for the install but does not cover any of the adjustable scan settings - you have to go to the help files for that.
