HEWCE841A - LaserJet Pro M1212NF Multifunction Laser Printer with Copy/Fax/Print/Scan Review

HEWCE841A - LaserJet Pro M1212NF Multifunction Laser Printer with Copy/Fax/Print/Scan
Average Reviews:

Purchased this printer and put it together this afternoon. (After I stopped at Office Depot and purchased a USB cable, (which was not in my box containing my all in one printer). After removing all of the orange plastic, and placing the cords in the correct orifices, this printer/fax/scanner seems pretty spectacular! Your computer will input and change the dates/times so you don't have to try to struggle with the printer for these changes.
This is a newly purchased machine which appears superior to its replacement.
I purchased this machine at a reasonable price [...] however the shipping was pretty extreme [...]...
...But for the machine...I would have to rate it excellent!

I actually went into the stores looking for a fax machineexpecting to spend about $150. when i saw this at [the offered price], i realized i hit the jackpot. its so nice and small and the cover closes up to hide the buttons for a better look. my print quality was exceptional even though the dpi is only 720x360. in reading about Canon's Drop Modulation technology, i can see how they do it with minimal dpi. black quality is perfect and there are NO paper missfeeds at all. it seems as though it will copy just about anything and that makes me happy. i havent had any worries about this machine and Canon has answered all my questions about the different things i can do with it. Thank you so much Canon for making a great product. Now my fax machine does 4 other things as well! Awesome.

Picked up this printer at the local Staples for $[...] new sealed box. The ink and print heads themselves are worth $100+. Integrated this printer into my home network. Had an issue with finding the printer on the network and accessing the directjet web page by default. Hard coded the printer IP on printer and on router and BAM all works like a charm. Hey,for $[...]bucks, once the ink runs out I can sell it or just dump it. It's not like I don't already have another printer.

Ricoh Aficio CL3500N Color Laser Printer (White) Review

Ricoh Aficio CL3500N Color Laser Printer (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We installed fourteen of these under our purview (college dorms) 10 months ago and our residents printed ~800,000 copies since.
Pros:
* They simply do not jam. I've run a printing operation serving 2500 residents for eight years and have never had a workgroup laserprinter be so reliable.
* They work well in an 'open' printing environment. We us PostScript and accept about 25% of our jobs from Macs, 70% from PCs - mostly XPSP2, and 5% Linux. There are no noticeable OS issues. We've seen that certain versions of Acrobat on Windows or Mac may fail to print, particularly with large file sizes (>300MB ps) or with full-page mathematical notations, but Adobe upgrades fix that on Windows and Preview fixes that on Mac.
* Changing toner is a no-brainer.
* The print quality is excellent for both text and color images. I'm uncertain why Andre's experience was so poor, but believe it was an anomaly.
Cons:
* It's slow. Expect to wait the 20 seconds or so for first page out unless you've just printed another job. And, when it starts printing, it's no speed demon. If you are setting up only one or so, the sleep time is configurable, but with 14 of these deployed and managed by student staff, we merely put printers in place, out-of-box. Stick with Xerox workgroup printers for speedy KW printing.
* It's heavy. Two person heavy. Really.
* It's bigger than your average printer.

The cost-efficient Ricoh Aficio CL3500N Color Laser Printer offers unsurpassed versatility and performance. Its multi-function capabilities, fast speeds, and smooth connectivity make this printer a must for any office. Network-ready, this user-friendly machine will put that professional touch on your office documents with high resolution and sharp, clear graphics and text. The compact and stylish design only adds to the appeal of this great performer. The CL3500N is the one printer you can depend on to keep up with the demands of your workgroup. Workgroup-Level Printing at a Desktop Price The CL3500N embodies the latest device management and print controller technologies to bring you 22 pages per minute (ppm) full-color and monochrome network printing options with image quality and a price that make it a leader in overall value and performance. This network-ready full-color/monochrome laser printer is designed to meet the needs of budget-conscious small offices and workgroups seeking fast, affordable color. Similarly priced color laser printers are often significantly slower than the CL3500N, while printers with comparable speeds and capabilities are typically larger and more expensive. The CL3500N is thus the perfect choice to meet all your needs for performance and value. Print Speeds and Resolution The CL3500N works quickly and efficiently, minimizing wait time. The machine takes only 30 seconds or less to warm up, and thanks to print speeds of 22 ppm for both black-and-white and color printing and a first page out speed of 13.5 seconds for black-and-white and 14.5 for color, you'll have plenty of time to focus on other tasks. In addition, the 1200 by 1200 dots per inch (dpi) resolution ensures that each and every document will come out crisp, sharp, and vivid. And the 128 MB of memory (512 maximum memory available) means the CL3500N handles even the most complex jobs with ease. Compact and Versatile The versatile CL3500N can be expanded to meet the demands of your business, while never occupying more space. You can simply add one or two 530-sheet paper trays to the standard 630-sheet supply and install them beneath the main unit. In this way, the printer can increase its capabilities without any alteration to the system footprint. You can also take advantage of the multipurpose tray to feed stocks up to 110 pounds, and save paper by producing two-sided pages automatically with the optional internal duplex unit. Seamless Simplicity The CL3500N comes equipped with a standard USB 2.0 and 10/100BaseTX Ethernet network interface, which allows you to seamlessly migrate from a direct connection from your PC to either your printer, or to multi-user network printing at no additional cost. To further maximize your investment, you can easily extend device access to new users with unique printing requirements. In older and historic buildings where installing hardwired network drops is difficult or cost prohibitive, and for temporary events like conferences and trade shows, you can take advantage of CL3500N support for a number of specialized connectivity options, such as IEEE 802.11b and Bluetooth Wireless protocols for cable-free printing. The printer also integrates seamlessly with computers running Windows, Macintosh, and UNIX operating systems. Integrate Options for Greater Value When you need even more functionality, the CL3500N is ready to grow with your business. Add the Ricoh IS200e Image Scanner to satisfy color copying needs and take advantage of electronic document distribution with Scan-to-Email, Scan-to-Folder, and more. Capture high-resolution color images for editing or placement into new digital documents, and then share that information instantly without distribution costs. The CL3500N comes with a one-year warranty.

Dell 968w All-in-One Wireless Printer Review

Dell 968w All-in-One Wireless Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had a 968 wireless and a plain 968. They are fair machines as stand-alone multi-function units except they are noisy.
The set-up and compatability with MS Windows Vista is a nightmare. Just type "Vista and Dell 968" into Google and see for yourself how problematic they are together. It might be the Dell drivers, software, or the bugs in Vista. It doesn't matter except they don't work together. I have lost countless hours as a result over a period of two years.
I have a Dell replacement warranty for three years on my newest 968 which is also useless as the techs cannot fix the problems and always end up telling me to reload Vista which does not fix the many outstanding compatability/connectivity issues.
It does work flawlessly with XP in my experience on two other computers.

HP Officejet 7110 All-in-One Multifunction Review

HP Officejet 7110 All-in-One Multifunction
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this machine in August along with an overnight replacement warranty (thank goodness). Since August I have had 3 different machines. Each one malfunctioned. (1) The automatic feeder did not work properly and the paper jammed. HP replaced the machine. (2) The print head connection was not making contact and the machine would not detect the print cartridges. HP replaced that machine. (3) It would only print in red and blue because the print cartridges were improperly distribting the ink. In addition, each time I replaced the machine I had to uninstall and reinstall the software, which should not have been necessary. Not to mention the hours spent on the phone with HP service and my IT person trying to get the machines to function properly. In one week I had two replacements. It is also noisy and slow. I begged my salesperson to take it back, which he did and I was happy to see it go.

HP K8600 Office Jet Pro Color Printer
Average Reviews:

If any graphic design artists need to print in CMYK and wide format, this is probably the best printer you can get in terms of cost and quality. The 88 ink is super cheap and it pumps out a LOT of pages. If you plan on doing a lot of printing but don't wanna pay as much as a laser jet printer, you should use a printer that uses the 88 ink. For 20.99 this cartridge can give you 1200 pages. What other cartridge on the market can do that for so cheap??? What's even better is how 34 bucks you can get the XL and the XL can do 2400 pages. Again, what cartridge do you know of can give you 2400 pages for 34 bucks? It's a great printer at a great price when you can find it on sale.

HP Deskjet 9800 Wide Format Color Printer (C8165A#A2L) Review

HP Deskjet 9800 Wide Format Color Printer (C8165A#A2L)

Bought this for the wife to do some scrapbooking. Thought for sure the other reviewers must have been doing something wrong. Nope. This thing has a mind of it's own...especially if you try to print anything larger than 8 1/2 X 11. HP has not perfected home user wide format printers yet.

I returned it for the Canon i9900 wide format printer which, granted, was $100 more but the quality is simply amazing. 91 positive reviews can't be wrong. I was so impressed with the Canon quality that I scooped up a PIXMA 780 All-In-One for myself. Also a tremnedous number of positve reviews there as well. Much cheaper ink, better quality - how did I miss these the first time. Live and learn from my experiences.

Brother MFC-3820CN Color Inkjet Multifunction Review

Brother MFC-3820CN Color Inkjet Multifunction
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the money I could not find another MF device that even came close to this unit.
Printing, Fax, Scanning, and copying are all as expected with output quality on par with other units in the $150-$400 range. However, it is its advanced functions that really make it shine.
First, the MFC has a built in 10/100baseT server. Not just a print server but a server that will support both local network and internet based printing, faxing, and even FTP access to memory cards. Want to share your digital photos; just put your CF, SD, etc. card in the printer and have your friends FTP in and copy the files. Or, use a memory card to store other files that you want to make accessable via FTP.
You can also do a lot of other interesting things like auto-forward faxes, store and forward on demand, broadcast, and so on. In all cases a Fax can be sent via normal phone line or via email depending on the 'address' you enter.
One very cool feature if you have broadband is that by opening port 515 on your home router/firewall you can print to the Brother MFC from anyplace you have internet access. Print from a hotel, airport, friends house, work (as long as port 515 is not blocked), etc. Very cool.
Also, the 20 sheet ADF is great for making copies or faxing larger documents while the flat bed scanner allows copy/fax of bound books, etc.
One the down side:
- The unit is not small; allow enough space for it
- The paper tray only holds ~100 sheets; a common issue with consumer printers
- Memory is limited at 16MB; don't expect to store tons of complex documents
- Color faxing ONLY works if you print the Fax when it arrives; you can't store a color fax and print it later or forward it to another Fax
- You have to install all 4 ink carts. for the printer to work and if one cart. is out of ink the printer stops printing; e.g. if your Yellow is out and you want to print a B&W fax you are out of luck
- Unlike HP units, the Bother has fixed print heads so if you have a failure you can't just replace the cart.; your have to replace the printer
- You can't change the IP Ports that the printer uses for its various network functions; e.g. FTP is fixed at 21, printing is fixed at 515. It would have been nice for security reasons to be able to change these to a user-defined value.
All in all this is a great all-in-one unit that has some great features that no other unit it its class has. For the price you can't go wrong!

The fax machine has a 3-second per page transmission speed and is capable of color faxing. It utilizes MH, MR, MMR, and JPEG (for color fax) fax coding methods. Canon Pixma MP970 Photo All-In-One Inkjet Printer (2181B002) Review

Canon Pixma MP970 Photo All-In-One Inkjet Printer (2181B002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am an amateur photographer and a professional Software Engineer. I purchased this printer as a general purpose printer and as a low cost photo printer. My home network which consists of 5 Windows XP computers and 1 Mac OS X computer (mine). I connected the printer to my network using the built in ethernet port. All of the testing I performed was over the network and I never tried the USB port. The printer does everything it advertises and does it well. I tested printing, scanning, and card reader functionality using OS X Tiger, OS X Leopard, Windows XP, and the printer worked flawlessly regardless of the OS I was using. You just need to make sure that you download and install the latest and greatest driver for the particular OS you are using. I also tried scanning directly using Photoshop CS3 on OS X Leopard and everything worked perfect.
One of the reasons I purchased the MP970 was for low cost photo printing. I also own an Epson R2400 which is a semi-professional dedicated photo printer. The R2400 is expensive to purchase, and expensive to operate. I was curious how the MP970 photo quality would compare to the R2400 so I directly compared photos printed on the Canon MP970 to the same photos printed on the Epson R2400. The Canon MP970 prints great pictures, but it is simply does not produce the same quality pictures as the R2400. I printed pictures from Photoshop in a color managed environment using Ilford Smooth Pearl Photo Paper and compared the R2400 to the MP970. The Canon MP970 did very well but Epson R2400 was definitely the winner - which was the expected result. The Epson had better highlights, better shadows, and more neutral mid tones. Notwithstanding, the MP970 produced very respectable prints which would be acceptable in all but the most demanding applications. The bottom line is that if you are really serious about excellent photo quality, this is not the printer for you. If you want a low cost way to produce very respectable prints, this printer is definitely for you. I feel that the Canon MP970 fully meets or exceeds my quality expectations for a low cost photo printer. And, as an added bonus, the MP970 is way cheaper to operate than my R2400 because it uses a lot less ink. As an example of how I use it, it's a lot more cost effective to print 25 Christmas cards on my MP970 than it is to print the same 25 cards on the R2400.
I only gave the printer 4 stars because it powers itself off every 2 to 4 days for no reason. Canon technical support confirmed that the printer should not power itself off and sent me a new replacement printer under warranty. Unfortunately, the replacement printer also powers itself off for no reason. I tried several different electrical outlets in my office and it did not fix the problem. Also, no other devices in my office power themselves off. This review has been here for a while now and several people posted comments and said that their MP970 printers also intermittently power off.
Update on Intermittent Power off Issue:
After about 9 months of operation, I ended up moving the printer from my office to my Son's room (for unrelated reasons). For unexplained reasons, the printer stopped intermittently powering itself off after I moved it to my Son's room. The printer has been in my Son's room for roughly 3 months now and it has not powered itself off once. Weird.
I have had the printer for roughly 1 year and I have not had any problems except for the power issue mentioned above.
Here is what the printer does:
- Double sided printing
- Ethernet connectivity
- USB Connectivity
- Initiate a scan from the printer or the computer
- Scan to the disk on your computer, scan to email, scan to PDF
- Copy
- Read camera memory cards. Access the cards via network or USB
- Scanner is compatible with Photoshop CS3 on OS X
- Compatible with OS X Tiger, OS X Leopard, Windows XP, Windows Vista
- 2 paper trays: Cassette in the bottom, open paper tray in the rear
- Will make borderless photo prints
Here is what the printer does not do:
- Does not fax
- Does not have an auto document feeder for the scanner
- Canon does not supply Linux drivers, but I have heard that Linux drivers may be available from other sources (see comments made by others about this review for more information).
- Wireless Ethernet is not directly supported. This printer connects to your network with an Ethernet cable.

Epson Stylus NX305 Color Ink Jet All-in-One (C11CA17241) Review

Epson Stylus NX305 Color Ink Jet All-in-One (C11CA17241)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
Good quality printing.
Scanner and auto document feeder work well.
Easy to change individual ink cartridges.
Cartridges under $10 each.
Amazing for the price.
Cons:
Very slow printing. If you need to print out a lot of pages quickly, even just plain black text, the slowness of this printer will drive you crazy.
Gobbles up ink.
Won't print anything if one of the ink cartridges is low of ink.
Recommendation:
If you are going to use this as your main printer and you print frequently, consider installing a continuous ink system with external large ink reservoirs.

Lexmark Impact S301 Wireless All-In-One Printer Review

Lexmark Impact S301 Wireless All-In-One Printer

After a couple of months, this machine started printing oddly at times, then one day it refused to work at all. Lexmark sent a replacement, and after waiting a week for it to arrive, I found I couldn't install the replacement as I had installed the original. Their tech support is only available limited hours. The printer also sucks up expensive ink like a dry sponge.
The only good things are the low cost and that it prints pretty fast.
If you like frustration and dealing with things that don't work they way they're supposed to, this is a good way to go.

Brother MFC-490CW Color Inkjet Wireless All-in-One Printer Review

Brother MFC-490CW Color Inkjet Wireless All-in-One Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was skeptical of Brother printers, but after having a miserable experience with HP trying to get a 6380 to work (two broken units delivered; two units returned; 4 hours on phone with tech support), I broadened my search and found consistently good reviews of this printer. I live in a mixed household (Windows and Mac), which also eliminated many competitors. Finding it on sale tipped the scales.
Out of the box, the printer is compact, has a low profile, and is a bit sleeker looking than the competitors. Overall workmanship is solid.
Only exception is the paper tray which feels a bit flimsy, but nothing that would deter me. There is also no easy way to feed envelopes or letterhead without pulling out the papertray -- and to run envelopes, you need to remove regular paper since the bypass tray is only for photo paper.
Fax machine is a nice feature to have and, thankfully, it does not come with a phone handset attachment which would just take up space for no reason.
Per the manual, the printer can NOT handle both wireless and wired USB/network connection at the same time. Not a problem for me at all as the unit will only be used via wireless.
It is energy star rated and defaults to putting itself to sleep after a period of non-use. Startup out of sleep is very fast when you send a wireless document. I tend to unplug my power strip when I won't be using the computer for a while and was afraid that the settings would wipe, but when I plugged it back in the printer sprang back to life with all wireless configurations intact.
Set up was pretty simple. Following the quick start instructions went fine. Found my wireless router, connected, printed test page, no problem. Installed drivers/software on Windows XP, and it looks to be a lot less heavy than HP's full software. Only wrinkle in installation is that it asked me several times to connect/verify the wireless connection (each piece of software plus the hardware basically asked me the same thing a few times... I probably didn't need to enter it so many times, but it wasn't difficult so I decided to be safe). No problems with Mac install either. Very simple.
Overall, the set up was easy and quick. Brother could learn a bit from HP in terms of integrating the documentation and the printer set up a little bit better, but that's a minor issue. It was easy and the thing worked right away.
Automatic document feeder on top of the machine is a great feature to have in a printer at this level, and it works well.
The wireless integration is well done. I was able to print wirelessly immediately, and, quite a pleasant surprise to find that the "scan" feature actually worked as advertised.
Scanning was as simple as dropping a document into the feeder, hitting scan, selecting which of my two wireless PCs I wanted to receive the doc, and then hitting start. Seamlessly scanned and dropped the PDF onto my hard drive.
Ditto for requesting an OCR of the paper document. OCR quality is pretty amazing. I haven't had experience with desktop/consumer OCR in a few years, so maybe they are all of similar quality now, but I was pleasantly surprised. No formatting came over, but I was able to take a memo sitting on my desk and scan/OCR it in a few seconds. The text dropped into a plain text file and had no errors in text recognition or punctuation.
Print speed appears to be slower than the box claims. I haven't tested it, but it feels slower than a lower quality HP deskjet it replaced. Could be a function of the wireless throughput. I'm not terribly concerned since this is for a low-volume home setup. Print quality is good, not fantastic (I will play with settings and see if I can't improve that). Photo prints onto plain paper are not as clear as HP.
I am also very happy with the low noise level. The printer is quiet (much more so than my prior HP inkjet) and it doesn't rattle and shake and rumble like my prior HP inkjet.
If you're having trouble getting the photo paper bypass to work, I had to resort to the manual. You need to physically move the bypass tray forward and lock it into place -- there is no software setting or configuration switch in the print properties. (You can select paper type and all the normal options there, but not the bypass.) Then when done, you pull the paper tray out and physically move the bypass tray back into standby position. At first I was annoyed, but given the frequency of printing via the bypass, I don't care. And I figure not having two paper paths probably means less chance of paper jams.
The model higher than this one is essentially the exact same unit but with a phone handset and a built in digital answering machine. I didn't think that was worth an extra $50, but if you need an answering machine it might be worth it to save footprint.
So far so good. I highly recommend this printer. For the price, features, ease of set up, size, and quiet, it is a very good deal.
I had tried the HP 6380 which had (to me) slightly better print quality, but lacked the automatic document feeder fax and the very well integrated wireless software. I also was unable to get multiple of them to work -- fatal errors on hardware, plus bad customer support, so I gave up and went to this unit... glad I did. I saved money and got a printer better suited for me.
I will update this review in a few weeks if I have any issues with reliability.

This is the second Brother multi-function printer I have owned. The old one worked perfectly for several years.
When I found out that Brother was offering this new MF Printer with 11 x 17 output capability I was tempted to buy one because I frequently print/fax/copy floorplan drawings. Then when I found out that it was less than $300 on Amazon I purchased one immediately and gave my old MF Printer to a friend.
I have not been disappointed. It was easy to set up and working in a matter of minutes. The warm up cycle at the beginning of a print job is a little slow, but fairly typical for this type of machine. I haven't found any complaints with it. The ability to print/fax/copy/receive 11 x 17 drawings is awesome.
I fully expected that the downside to this printer would be the cost of the ink cartridges. Wrong again! Replacement Ink cartridges, in both black and color, were relatively cheap and available in XL and XXL capacities.
One last thing. This is not a photo printer. Color printing is sharp and acceptable for most business applications, but don't expect to print photos.
This is a great, inexpensive business printer. I have been using it daily for about 6 weeks without so much as a hiccup. I highly recommed it.

I'm very happy with the printer so far. It does not have wireless capabilities without a network. And I haven't been able to print from iPhoto very well, but everything else is excellent. Ricoh has the best customer service I've ever seen. Wonderful printing.

Canon PIXMA MP990 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One Printer (3749B002) Review

Canon PIXMA MP990 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One Printer (3749B002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fair disclosure: I've had this printer up and running for less than 48 hours. But the early results have been so incredibly good, I felt a review was in order. If you, like me, have been on an endless search for an AIO that actually worked as advertised and could hold its own with minimal compromise vs. more task specific printers, then I believe your search has ended with the 990.
Setup: A+. I have two Macs, one a PowerMac G5 running 10.5, the other a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, both on my Airport Extreme (simultaneous dual band) network, and setup was about as close to plug and play as you could get. Just BE SURE that if you're running 10.6, you download all the latest drivers from Canon's website. The software CD packed with the printer is not updated for Snow Leopard.
Wireless Performance: As noted above, connecting to my home network was a snap. I've had no dropped connections over two days. Now, I've never had a problem printing wirelessly in the past, but scanning wirelessly and reliably? Forget it. At least, until the 990, which worked flawlessly on both machines from the first scan. You'd swear that Apple, and not Canon, had designed this hardware/software solution. Pop in a document, click scan, choose which computer you want to send it to and you're done.
Printing Quality: A. Superb quality on both black text and color graphics, and all reasonably quick.
Photo Quality: Haven't gotten into this yet, but professional reviews posted thus far indicate that the photo printing performance is excellent.
Scanning/Copying Quality: A. Scans and copies are incredibly good. Haven't tried negs or slides as yet.
Ease of Use: A. If Apple designed its own printer, this is how it would work. An amazingly intuitive interface.
I'll post an update after I've put it through its paces a while longer, but it's a definite 5 stars out of the box. Thanks for taking the time to read this review--I hope you found the info useful in helping you make a buying decision!
Update as of 10/16/09:
The Bad News: Within 2 weeks of posting my review, this printer has dropped in price by $100! Oh well... that'll teach me to be first in line to buy a new model! :-)
The Good News: I rated it 5 stars at $299 and I still think it's every bit as good as noted in my review. At $199, it's now a steal of a deal as well.
UPDATE AS OF 12/7/09
The professional reviews are now coming in for the MP990, and they're raving: Computer Shopper gave it a 9 out of 10, and [...] gave it Editor's Choice, stating that they had a hard time coming up with any "cons" for their conclusion. I remain totally satisfied after two months of use.
UPDATE AS OF 4/3/10
So, 6 months after purchase, do I still think this is a 5 star printer? Well, yes and no. The printer performance remains every bit as good as previously described. But the ink usage has been another matter. While I've owned a variety of other inkjets, this is my first Canon, and I feel it penalizes you more than other brands for light usage. After printing perhaps 2-3 dozen pages with color on them--and I'm talking very moderate amounts of color and no printing of photos--I've just had to replace all five color cartridges at a cost of $50 at Amazon discount prices. Do the math and you realize that this is a huge cost-per-page, driven by this printer's all-too-frequent automatic cleaning cycles of the print cartridges, which use up large amounts of ink whether you're actually priniting or not. Of course, all inkjets do this, but I feel this Canon takes it to a whole other level that just seems like a blatant cleaning of your wallet. That said, if you print color regularly, the ink usage may well be on par with the norm.
