HP Officejet Pro 8500 All-In-One - A909a Review

Picked up this printer at the local Staples for $[...] new sealed box. The ink and print heads themselves are worth $100+. Integrated this printer into my home network. Had an issue with finding the printer on the network and accessing the directjet web page by default. Hard coded the printer IP on printer and on router and BAM all works like a charm. Hey,for $[...]bucks, once the ink runs out I can sell it or just dump it. It's not like I don't already have another printer.

HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All-in-One Printer Review

HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All-in-One Printer

Recent reviews of the HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 Wireless were critical of noise, vibration, and ink usage. Here are what I have discovered since installing this printer.
1. On most surfaces the noise from the printer is minimal. Movement of the plastic gears on HP, Canon, and Epson are not silent. Perhaps newer versions of the 8500 by HP will address this minor concern.
2. The printer vibrates slightly compared to a laser printer, but not to the extent that it is objectionable. Perhaps HP can reduce or eliminate this in future models but probably by increasing the weight of the printer. Most users, I suggest, would not want a heavier printer.
3. Ink usage is part of the printer expense "game" but with HP you can continue to print in B&W even if any or all of the color cartridges are empty [Verified by HP Support] That may not be the case with some recent offerings from Epson or Canon, although I personally prefer Espon and Canon printers for color prints.
4. The ink cartridges are dated, but they will continue to function even after the "expiration" date. HP prints a date on the ink package, but it does not prevent the cartridge from working. As a matter of fact, ink will remain usable in a SEALED packet for an extended period without concern. This date code is not a rip-off by HP anymore than other companies who print a freshness date.
5. It is certainly less expensive to order color prints online than to purchase OEM ink and paper. For those with a digital camera who need a quick print now and then the quality of the HP is excellent.
6. Setup is easy. I would only add a note to the directions for Step 7 to input your choice of language and then follow the touch screen directions as the printer processes alignment. The directions are not clear on that one point, and you could wait for 30 minutes wondering why it hasn't competed alignment of the print heads. Check this out if you purchase this printer.
7. I am punctilious concerning most purchases and, at least in this case, I feel that this printer is an outstanding VALUE even when other offerings from Canon, Brother, and Epson may be less expensive. I have seen printers on sale for less than $50, but the thin plastic housing and the print quality reflect the price. We wanted Print / Copy / Scan / Fax, although we will seldom use the FAX function. (I will only connect the FAX as needed).
8. Follow the directions CAREFULLY and install precisely and you will enjoy owning this printer.

HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-in-One Inkjet Printer Review

I looked and researched wireless printers and was going crazy. This one had all postive reviews so I decided to order it. I wanted an all in one printer/scanner/copy/ fax and wireless. At 149.00 dollars sale price I decided to go for it.
It came in a huge box and I thought what the heck did I order and when I took it out of the box it was bigger than my other all in one, but the double sided printing attachment adds some bulk (I have not tried this feature). It is noisier than my HP 4280 all in one, but that is not a big deal.
Set up was fairly easy, I just followed the instruction set up page. The software took a long time to install. I am familiar with printer set ups and installing software so no problem there just time consuming. It came with everything I needed including the USB cord (usually not included). The fax was easy to set up and send (I have not received a fax yet)It has speed dial too. The wireless works perfectly from my laptop. I'm familiar with HP software so the program is easy to use for scanning and it's easy to do copies too.
I am unfamiliar with printheads that you have to install yourself and I do not know if they have to be replaced periodically or not. The ink comes with a pop off top that was kind of scary but you just pop it off. Cartridges are very easy to install. It seems to have to go through a lot to get going including noise.
It took me over an hour but I wasn't in a big hurry.
The only problem I have encountered is with my new HP pavilion laptop 64bit running Vista. My desk top is a dell running XP, and I didn't have any software problems. The software installed on my laptop with no problems except it gives an error message when I shut down my laptop. My HP 4120 did the same thing, HP has not been able to give me a fix. It's a 64 bit problem.
I'm pretty impressed with all the features and I have printed out some 4 by 6 photos and had no problem using photo paper or 4 by 6 paper. The paper tray holds tons of paper which is nice when using wireless, in case I forget to check before printing.
I only gave it 4 stars because of the Vista 64 bit software glitch.
I am an intermediate to advanced computer user.

HP Officejet 6500A Plus e-All-in-One (CN557A#B1H) Review

HP Officejet 6500A Plus e-All-in-One (CN557A#B1H)

Approximately one month ago, I purchased the 6500A plus. Installation was straightforward, and it appeared to operate well. One flaw quickly became apparent, however: whenever the printer sat idle for more a few minutes, it would subsequently not print. Scouring the available troubleshooting guides in its software, I came across a piece of advice that suggested I turn the printer off, then on again. That worked, except printing documents now required 1) pressing the power button to deactivate sleep mode 2) pressing it once more to turn it off 3) pressing it again to turn the printer on. Quickly, this process became annoying and I looked up HP's customer service # online. Thus began a two hour conversation with one of their technical support reps.
The customer service employee I spoke to sounded foreign (later found out he was in the Phillippines) but had a fairly good command of English. However, he misstated a couple of things, and only as I was about to hang up and decided to summarize his earlier statements, did I learn what really was going on. My printer has a known bug, that affects apparently a minority of all of these models; namely, after being turned on for about 5 minutes, the printer quickly enters sleep mode and does not come out of it when you go to print. The representative looked for a work around in the, and I'm not making this up, "underwear" settings, and began to see how to fix "energy saving mode" (what he called it instead of "sleep mode"). He sounded like he was clueless. Then we went through several trials where he asked me to press button after button on the keypad, which lasted about 15 minutes. In between instructions, he put me on hold to confer with colleagues and search online forums. The keypad buttons he told me to press did absolutely nothing....the printer did not respond whatsoever. I might have well as been tapping on the desk.
I asked if I could receive a replacement, to which he replied no, as this defect did not warrant one. However he said he could help me get an upgrade, but would not elaborate. I then asked to speak to a supervisor. A period of a few minutes of silence ensued where he did not respond, and I thought he may have disconnected. Suddenly, he came on the line and suggest he could offer me a replacement, but not an upgrade. One hour later, after being given incorrect service tag #'s, and more frustration, I finished the conversation and am expecting a replacement in about a week.
Oh, and before hanging up he told me his name was Peggy. If only.
12/23/10 Update: I received the new printer today, installed it, and it appears to work properly. Once left idle for several minutes, the printer enters sleep mode, and subsequently jumps to life when I go to print (as it should). At this point I'd like to make a couple more observations: The printer does not come with a paper copy of a user guide. The user guide is a software version, and the search option is inferior. By comparison to Google, it looks like it was designed by 3rd graders. After some effort, though, I discovered that energy saving mode totally different from sleep mode. The entire goal of "Peggy's" help was to deactivate or delay energy saving mode. That would not have affected sleep mode (nor my printers' problems) in the slightest! HP has some serious customer service issues if their employees are so ill-informed they don't understand the basic features of their own printers.
FYI: Energy saving mode will turn off the processor and firmware when the printer is turned off, in order to cut down on electricity usage. Sleep mode, on the other hand, deactivates the lcd and enables the printer to use less electricity while still on. Energy saving mode can be turned off through one of the lcd sub-menus, while sleep mode cannot be.
