HP K8600 Office Jet Pro Color Printer Review

HP K8600 Office Jet Pro Color Printer
Average Reviews:

If any graphic design artists need to print in CMYK and wide format, this is probably the best printer you can get in terms of cost and quality. The 88 ink is super cheap and it pumps out a LOT of pages. If you plan on doing a lot of printing but don't wanna pay as much as a laser jet printer, you should use a printer that uses the 88 ink. For 20.99 this cartridge can give you 1200 pages. What other cartridge on the market can do that for so cheap??? What's even better is how 34 bucks you can get the XL and the XL can do 2400 pages. Again, what cartridge do you know of can give you 2400 pages for 34 bucks? It's a great printer at a great price when you can find it on sale.

HP Deskjet 9800 Wide Format Color Printer (C8165A#A2L) Review

HP Deskjet 9800 Wide Format Color Printer (C8165A#A2L)

Bought this for the wife to do some scrapbooking. Thought for sure the other reviewers must have been doing something wrong. Nope. This thing has a mind of it's own...especially if you try to print anything larger than 8 1/2 X 11. HP has not perfected home user wide format printers yet.

I returned it for the Canon i9900 wide format printer which, granted, was $100 more but the quality is simply amazing. 91 positive reviews can't be wrong. I was so impressed with the Canon quality that I scooped up a PIXMA 780 All-In-One for myself. Also a tremnedous number of positve reviews there as well. Much cheaper ink, better quality - how did I miss these the first time. Live and learn from my experiences.

Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL Scanner with Transparent Media Adapter Review

I have a Microtek scanner and just downloaded the latest drivers. It turns out Microtek wants a program called Scan Finder to load at every start-up, and there is no way to disable this. The product works satisfactorily, but for my money, I will purchase something else. Something that doesn't create such a nuisance, and isn't so invasive.

Brother MFC-6490CW Professional Series Color Inkjet Wireless All-in-One Printer Review

Brother MFC-6490CW Professional Series Color Inkjet Wireless All-in-One Printer

I use AutoCAD at work and occasionally at home. My hubby and I jumped when we saw this printer: just had to get it! The print is as good as on the 11x17 HP inkjet at work, and this 11x17 scanner is a better size than any of the workplace ones (although I haven't used that function yet).
Hubby managed to hook up the 6490 to our home wifi without help, and no, he didn't set our wifi up originally, and no, he doesn't really understand how wifi works. In fact, hubby is visually handicapped! I'd rate ease of installation to wifi as 5 stars. The only glitch we had was that we didn't know we had a firewall, but the install disc talked us though that step too.
So now I'm sitting in bed typing on my Dell 1520 XP and sending to the printer in the other room. I don't know how it goes through ink, but will post back if I have an issue about that or anything else in the future.
Edit added 9-6-08: We just changed the first ink cartridge. I've been printing mainly with black, but also did about 300 very small (2"x3") photos with lots of sky. We managed 700 copies on the first black cartridge as far as I can tell. Cyan is at 50% and magenta and yellow don't really show as being low yet. The machine has been beeping for the last week warning us black was low, but only today did it quit printing due to lack of ink. The last page it did was as good as the first, so I have to wonder exactly how low that ink was when it quit on us. At any rate: we had no wasted prints from low ink and it was nice enough to tell us it had stopped. Can't say that with the HP at work!

Brother MFCJ6510DW Business Inkjet All-in-One Printer with 11-Inch x 17-Inch Duplex Printing and 11-Inch x 17-Inch Scan Glass Review

Brother MFCJ6510DW Business Inkjet All-in-One Printer with 11-Inch x 17-Inch Duplex Printing and 11-Inch x 17-Inch Scan Glass
Average Reviews:

**Update: (June 30, 2011) After using this printer for a few months, I am dropping the rating to 4 stars. I am still happy with the consumption and print quality, however, the paper trays are terribly engineered. It is annoying to add paper or change paper from letter to tabloid size. Lots of misfed paper and a few paper jams. The wireless scanning software is not intuitive and works sometimes but not always.
I did some serious research on all-in-ones before purchasing this. I hope this is helpful:
I had felt burned by previous HPs and Epsons because of the cost of ink and the frequency or replacing cartridges and I was determined to find an economical printer. . . This is it.
The good:
very economical -one of the most economical all-in-one inkjets available based on extensive research
wireless printing works great
wireless scanning works great
11x17 printing and scanning
prints reliably and quickly
Areas for improvement:
had some minor paper jams till I learned to load the paper exactly right.
paper tray is somewhat inconvenient because you have to remove the whole thing to load it.
limited options for print quality settings
I compared printers based mostly on ink cost/ page yield. Some of the better performers are listed at the bottom of this review. My research showed that each printer brand offers ink cartridges that are far more economical than others from the same brand. Brother's best value cartridge (for all-in-ones) is the LC-65 or LC-79. HP's best value cartridge is the HP940XL. Epson's is the 127 , Lexmark's is the 105XL/ 100XL, Canon's is the PGI-7/ PGI-9.
I chose this Brother MFCJ6510DW because the cost per page for the Brother LC79 cartridge was one of the very best ($.0333 per page avg.) and the LC79 cartridges are very large so don't need to be replaced as often. (2400 pages black, 1200 color). Compare this to my old Epson CX9400FAX. ($.0595 per page avg., 370 pages BW and 500 pages color with the Epson 68 cartridge) My old HP was even worse.
Read this article here: [...]
I was a little skeptical cause I'd never purchased a Brother. It is not as nicely designed as HP or Epson but it is OK looking. I like that it can print (and scan) 11x17. Wireless printing was pretty easy to setup and it works great. You can even scan and wirelessly send the scans to you computer. (worked the first time). The only problem I've had with it is some minor paper jams but I learned that you have to load the paper tray just right and it hasn't happened since. The paper tray is a bit inconvenient cause you have to remove the whole thing to add paper (like old full-size copy machines).
I've had it for about a month and have printed a 2" thick stack of 8.5x11 color prints (with about 30% page coverage) on the highest setting and still haven't run out of ink from the original (non-high-yield) cartridges. I haven't tried many of the other funstions except scanning and printing but I will re-post if anything comes up. . .

Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL Scanner Review

I thought the scanner was great, but the lamp went out just after 1 year after I bought it. So now all my scans have a rainbow line from top to bottom. Microtek's extent of technical support is reinstall the drivers, if that doesn't work you have to return it so we can repair it, because there are no authorized repair people out there, but us. They will not sell me the lamp, because they need to repair it themselves (they want the labor dollars). So, after I paid $1,400 for this thing a year ago I am going to have to pay another $200-300 for repair and shipping both ways.

This scanner is great for 11x17 scans. I'm a textile designer and need to scan large fabric prints and this scanner, for the price, is awesome!
The functions are easy and scanning time is faster than I thought. I used to have a HP scanner and that took forever...not to mention the warm up time. But, this scanner has a relatively quick warm up and scanning time.
The only reason I gave it a 4 star instead of 5 is because there is a little 1/4" fish bowl effect at the edges of the scans. But, I have to piece together prints anyways, so it's not that big of a deal. For the price, it's still well worth it.

If you are looking for a scanner that can scan a full page of comic art in one pass then look no further. No more scanning in pieces and cutting and pasting pages together. The scan area has enough room for a full sized 11" x 17" comic page with room to spare. The extra software isn't great or bad, if you are already scanning into your chosen software you probably won't use it. Plus it's about the hardware and I am so glad I got this scanner, it has made scanning pages a lot easier.
