(More customer reviews)When I review a product, I like to mention the problems first, then detail the things I like. For this review, there are quite simply no things I like about this printer.
Connectivity: Poor. I've been able to connect a wide variety of devices to my wireless G network, including a Brother printer, but this printer will not connect no matter what I do. This isn't terribly important, however, given the other problems I've had.
Print: Print quality is acceptable. Given the quantity of ink this printer guzzles, I'd hope it would be. After replacing what I assumed were starter cartridges, I got 40 ordinary text pages out of the replacement carts. There's no longer a need to connect this monster to my wireless network, since it's cheaper to print text on my Canon photo printer.
Fax: It will not receive faxes. All is configured correctly, the printer reports an incoming ring, it's set to answer, but when I try to force it to answer it returns the error "Load paper for fax printing." Paper is loaded, and I made a copy to test that there are no feed problems.
Copy: B&W copying is acceptable, but again, not cheap. I'm not going to try a color copy until I have no choice.
Scan: Acceptable. I'm using an 8GB SDHC card and scanning directly to the card, since of course there's no network connection. It works, but an ordinary scanner would produce better quality scans and take up a whole lot less space.
I've had my eye on a large format Epson printer, but this is the last Epson product I will ever own. I do recognize that the photo printers are a very different beast than the Workforce printers, but if this is the kind of quality that Epson will put its name on, I've lost all respect for the company.

Canon MultiPass F30 Flatbed Multifunction Review

What I like: printouts are crisp and clean for text, graphics and photos; photos that I've printed on photo glossy paper were indistinguishable to me from the 4"x6" photos I scanned in (600 dpi, using F30's scanning software and Microsoft PhotoDraw 2000 v1.0); 1152x864 dpi digital photos I've taken and printed as large as I can on 8.5"x11" photo glossy paper look like professional portraits to me; it prints fast, even in high quality photo mode; functions as a stand alone copier (b&w, color and photos, too); and the ink is relatively cheap. I would buy another one if I needed a second stand-alone printer/scanner (as it apparently doesn't work as a network printer). It has USB and parallel communication ports (so maybe one could connect two PCs to one F30 when using different ports?). Regarding the ink, each color is in its own reservoir and is easy to replace. The print head is replaceable should the nozzles ever become clogged. (I totaled a $50 Epson printer by using a cheap ink refill kit, as Epson ink was costing me about $15 for every 100 to 150 pages of black text.) While ... seems expensive, I estimate the F30's lifetime cost to me will be about the same to hundreds of dollars less than an HP, Epson or Lexmark printer (without scanners) when the cost of the manufacturer's ink is factored in. I like the Omnipage Pro v9 OCR software that comes with the F30. Overall the F30 is a great printer, a great scanner and a great copier for this home user.

(More customer reviews)The printing resolution is excellent. I can hardly tell the difference in quality from the laser printer in both B/W and color. All the functions work just great if you consider the price tag. This is almost identical to its sibling PSC500. Only downside is that if you use MS Publishing 2000, can't use the built-in slot to print out the envelopes because of the limited printing option to choose. It's MS's fault. You can still work around it by importing it to MS Words. For this reason I give 4 stars, but would give 5 stars for the unit itself. And, I wish I can copy something in color to B/W. Wouldn't mind paying few bucks extra for it.

I also wanted a printer I could take on the road if I had to. The HP J3680 fit those requirements like no other printer I could find. On top of all that, I found a great price on Amazon.com
Caveats: I've used this only for printing black and white text.
Pros: Compact. Easy setup (Mac). Built in phone. Ink available everywhere. Takes up very little space on desk. The copier has many features to customize your job. The menu prompts are easy to follow. The phone (yes, even a phone!) has good sound.
Cons: Printing not the fastest, but the quality is exceptional. Cartridges are a bit finicky when being changed, but you'll get the hang of it once you've done it.
Bottom Line: I'd buy it again. Very nice for the start-up small business or general home use.

(More customer reviews)My purchase from Amazon yielded a printer that had an issue. Canon promptly replaced with a brand new unit. The printer is plenty fast. Does a great job with text, nice and crisp, which is my primary concern whenever I purchase a printer. Printing on standard paper my photos look great. Looking forward to trying them on photo paper and I imagine the results will be even better. Copying, works great and copies look near identical to originals. Scanning function works great too with scans that can be used in print and elsewhere. At $150 this printer is the way to go. Of course you could spend twice as much and get something quicker but as too quality of output I am not sure the average user would see much of a difference without magnification. I have no qualms about recommending this product. One last note... it is great to have the separate ink carts. The black is twice as large as the 3 colored carts.

Always works, easy to print envelopes with and makes a reliable fax machine. It's also a very good scanner and copier, capable of double-sided copies. Scanning directly into my iMac, the results are very clean.
For you Mac users, this is an excellent choice. Easy to set up on a network or directly connected via USB. I use one in an all PC network, one in a mixed Mac and PC network at home and another in a mixed Mac and PC network in my Forensics Lab.
This is an excellent value, solidly constructed and easy to setup and use. I highly recommend this machine.

Canon PIXMA MP150 Photo All In One Printer Review

(More customer reviews)This printer is a question of value. Clearly, there are higher quality printers even from Canon. Likewise, there are printers that are less expensive. What I am most interested in knowing about when shopping for something is the relative value of the item. In that way, the MP150 should receive 5 stars. It is an extremely good value for what it is: a quality, at-home moderate use printer.
Printing quality is fast and of high quality. Borderless 4x6 photos are what I would call very good (I have not yet printed larger). I have seen better photos, but not at this price point. You will be very happy with the occasional or semi-frequent picture you print off for friends, family, or yourself. Pictures seem a little skewed to the beige, but I don't notice any grain or lines. It will not quite replace a photo studio or online provider, but with the low cost of printing digital pictures at your local drug store, 90% of us should not be overly concerned with very, very high quality, at home printing. The Pict Bridge is nice and Canon claims pictures will not fade for 100 years if stored in proper albums.
Normal document printing is good too. Not quite laser, but anyone who need regular business printing should invest in at least a low cost laser. No ink based printer will do what you need if you have a business office in your home.
Scanning is very good and easy. Their software allows for all sorts of imports and scanning, while not lightning fast, is quite good. Copying is a breeze: place your document on the glass (and with an auto-adjusting top, you can easily copy books up to 1-2 inches thick), hit the black or color button, and you're done. No need to have the computer on.
The paper tray leaves a little to be desired, but not too much. It's a bit flimsy and doesn't give you a great deal of confidence that it will pull paper correctly, although it has so far for me. I like the non-turning path the paper takes. Paper goes in the top and comes out straight from the front. This makes labels easier and more successful. The printer seems very good at pulling your paper media quite well without the stutter or mistakes of some HP printers.
Canon offers four ink cartridges for this printer: PG 40 (black) and PG 50 (black high capacity) as well as CL41 (color) and CL51 (color high capacity). Some have said that it won't accept the high cap cartridges. I haven't tried yet.
As for what I would have liked to see, the printer, while somewhat fast, can take forever to start printing. It almost always takes enough time for me to think the printer is not going to print. When I then go to remove the paper and try again, it starts up just before I get there like it was waiting for me to make the first move!
The tray is rated to hold 100 pieces of paper. No way. More like 50 if you're lucky. Ink is high quality and the heads are part of the cartridge, but ink use is higher than average. Normal cartridges are rates for around 200 pages and, because there are not multiple color cartridges, if you run out of one color, you run out of everything.
Finally, when compared to its competitor (HP1401), it is both more expensive and bigger. However, I would take the MP150 over the HP (and since I have both, I should know).

The Canon Pixma MP270 Inkjet printer is one of the best in its class. The quality of prints are superb and the cost of both the package and the ink cartridges are exceptional. I use it daily for college assignments, work projects, pictures and photocopies. I was tempted to buy the lower version (MP250) locally, but after reading the reviews online at Amazon (for the MP250) I decided to place the order for this model and I haven't had reason to regret this decision yet. It cost me a bit more, but in the end the purchase was well worth both the cost and wait.

The Bad:
Aside from a slightly cheap asthetic feel, I can't find a thing. And for such a low price, it's to be expected. Other manufactures might have shnazzier printers at the same price point, but keep in mind most other manufacturers don't sell printers, they sell ink, so you pay for it in the long run.
Overall I am extremely satisfied with this printer. Coming from an IP4000, I had high expectations, and this did not dissapoint. I have owned every major brand of printers (HP, Epson), and Canon is absolutely where it's at. Cartridges are much more affordable, you aren't forced to install 400mb of junk that loads 5 processes at windows startup (HP), and the attention to detail is great (i.e., you can program the printer to shutoff after X minutes of being idle). Do yourself a favor and buy a Canon.

Canon MultiPASS F50 Flatbed Multifunction Review

I was considering some other flatbed all-in-one's from HP, Brother, Lexmark, etc, and am using this to replace separate older HP all-in-one and Canon scanner units. Some reasons I chose this unit include combination of ability to copy 8x14 legal (auto-doc feeder only), individual color cartridges (cheaper and environmentally more friendly), high speed color fax w/270pg memory, 2400x1200 color print resolution (useful for digital photos), 30pg auto-doc feeder, direct hi-res color copies (1200x1200), 25-400% copy enlarge/reduce, and print speed.
Setup was easy - quite a few steps to unwrap packing tapes and other setup, but fairly dummy-proof both hardware and software. Performance is excellent in many ways for basic printing, copying, scanning and fax. In the 1200dpi direct color copying mode, even does a respectable job copying direct to glossy photo paper. Doc feeder is smooth, no jams so far. Note that 8x14 legal scans work fine, but are through the doc feeder only, which runs them through a small separate 1"-wide scan area - the plate glass accepts up to letter and A4 sizes (the doc is wrong on this suggesting 8x14 glass copies, but a note on the canon web site corrects this). The unit is a good healthy size, but not overly huge. It vibrates back and forth a bit during inkjet printing sweeps, but a good solid base will help. There is also a plastic cover over the paper tray, a nice touch to keep dirt/dust off the paper supply.
On the down side, the docs are well written for basic functions, but very poor for most advanced features. Many technical terms are not defined (eg: most fax tx/rcv settings) or not documented beyond just mentioning them by name. There is no single section or roadmap for all of the on-printer menus and most menu settings are not in the index either, so you have to jump around the pages by eye. The color/quality/paper settings in the print setup, while flexible, have little documentation in terms of what they really do (eg: difference between photo/glossyphoto/photofilm paper type settings). I'm still working on trying to compensate a bit for correct skin tones from my Fuji digital camera, which tends to favor red more than I'd like - although shots from another digital camera came out fine. Another nit: the max scan resolution I've seen is 600x600, so I'm not sure where the claimed 600x1200 settings come from. Finally, 17c/12b ppm copying and printing speeds are not what I'm seeing for highest resolution settings, these numbers must be for either lowest resolution, or multiple page copy speeds.
All that aside, I'm very happy with the unit, it copies and prints great high-resolution pictures in reasonable speeds, and is nicely priced.

Canon PIXMA MP460 All-In-One Photo Printer (1449B002) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought my PIXMA on more or less no research, other than having really liked Canon's printers in the past. My several year old Canon S600 stopped working suddenly, and my kids needed to print homework ASAP. So I ran to a nearby big box store, and picked one up. The price was reasonable, and I thought the scanner / copier functions would come in handy (although I already had a flatbed scanner...but it was so old-school it still only ran on a parallel cable...remember those kids!?!).
Anyway, it set up in no time and worked perfectly right off the bat. It makes good quality prints, and the photos look fine too me...not heavey on the red. It's also nice to put a memory card right in the printer and print photos without needing to even have the computer on. The copier function, although only used twice in two months, works good. The printer came with lots of bundled hardware. Usually, I have no use for the bundled stuff, it's always the LE edition or very limited in someway. But the Canon Easy Photo print makes it a snap for me or my technophobe wife to print photos in whatever size and on whatever paper without any big headaches. The OCR software is very good. My three year old OmniPro, which I paid a fair amount for, doesn't work as good.
I can't say yet how efficient its toner use is...haven't had it long enough to judge.
There are a couple of downsides. It is SLOW to start. First copies sometimes take long enough to kick in that you wonder if something is wrong. But when it starts, it is quite fast. For plain paper printing with some photos and graphics...the graphics barely slow it down. Full color, high quality photos take a little longer, but are still fast. You just have to be patient for that one page to start. Scanning is the same way...the scanner has to "think" for a bit before it starts, but then it's fast. It is a little bit noisy...nothing to send the neighbors calling the cops or anything...but it's the noisiest ink jet I've owned. The scanning is a little noisy too.
But overall, I'm thrilled to have gotten a good quality item and at a really great price too. I'm very happy with it!! I think most routine users would be too.

(More customer reviews)The K60 is a great machine in many ways but, and this is a big BUT... HP purposely left out a very important feature that the machine is entirely capable of. Black and White copying! That's right... if you put in ANYTHING with color on it and press copy, you will get a much more expensive and slower color copy. This works out great for HP because it uses lot's more of their expensive color ink, but not for the user. Try copying a sheet of yellow note paper with a few handwritten notes and prepare for a rather slow copy that uses a lot of the yellow ink in your color cartridge!
This is completely inexcusable considering the less expensive T45 does both color and B&W copies. It has a B&W copy button and a color copy button. You wouldn't think that moving up to one of HP's more expensive multifunction models would mean the loss of an important feature would you?
If you're going to be doing a lot of copying, think twice about this machine. Of course, the K80 has the same B&W Copy button that the T45 does, but do you really want to spend another $100 for a feature that any reasonable person would assume should already be in the K60? In case you're wondering, there is no menu option to enable B&W copying in the K60, it just isn't there. I have verified this with HP's tech support who find this missing feature equally baffling.
For this reason, I can't give it more than a three. I'd give it a 2.5 if I could.

Excellent color and black-only copies are made at 7 copies per minute in black and 6 copies per minute in color. Like the fax component, the copier has its own output bin and a 20-page automatic document feeder. You can make reductions and enlargements from 50 to 200 percent. The K60 comes backed with a one-year limited warranty.

Canon Pixma MP970 Photo All-In-One Inkjet Printer (2181B002) Review

(More customer reviews)I am an amateur photographer and a professional Software Engineer. I purchased this printer as a general purpose printer and as a low cost photo printer. My home network which consists of 5 Windows XP computers and 1 Mac OS X computer (mine). I connected the printer to my network using the built in ethernet port. All of the testing I performed was over the network and I never tried the USB port. The printer does everything it advertises and does it well. I tested printing, scanning, and card reader functionality using OS X Tiger, OS X Leopard, Windows XP, and the printer worked flawlessly regardless of the OS I was using. You just need to make sure that you download and install the latest and greatest driver for the particular OS you are using. I also tried scanning directly using Photoshop CS3 on OS X Leopard and everything worked perfect.
One of the reasons I purchased the MP970 was for low cost photo printing. I also own an Epson R2400 which is a semi-professional dedicated photo printer. The R2400 is expensive to purchase, and expensive to operate. I was curious how the MP970 photo quality would compare to the R2400 so I directly compared photos printed on the Canon MP970 to the same photos printed on the Epson R2400. The Canon MP970 prints great pictures, but it is simply does not produce the same quality pictures as the R2400. I printed pictures from Photoshop in a color managed environment using Ilford Smooth Pearl Photo Paper and compared the R2400 to the MP970. The Canon MP970 did very well but Epson R2400 was definitely the winner - which was the expected result. The Epson had better highlights, better shadows, and more neutral mid tones. Notwithstanding, the MP970 produced very respectable prints which would be acceptable in all but the most demanding applications. The bottom line is that if you are really serious about excellent photo quality, this is not the printer for you. If you want a low cost way to produce very respectable prints, this printer is definitely for you. I feel that the Canon MP970 fully meets or exceeds my quality expectations for a low cost photo printer. And, as an added bonus, the MP970 is way cheaper to operate than my R2400 because it uses a lot less ink. As an example of how I use it, it's a lot more cost effective to print 25 Christmas cards on my MP970 than it is to print the same 25 cards on the R2400.
I only gave the printer 4 stars because it powers itself off every 2 to 4 days for no reason. Canon technical support confirmed that the printer should not power itself off and sent me a new replacement printer under warranty. Unfortunately, the replacement printer also powers itself off for no reason. I tried several different electrical outlets in my office and it did not fix the problem. Also, no other devices in my office power themselves off. This review has been here for a while now and several people posted comments and said that their MP970 printers also intermittently power off.
Update on Intermittent Power off Issue:
After about 9 months of operation, I ended up moving the printer from my office to my Son's room (for unrelated reasons). For unexplained reasons, the printer stopped intermittently powering itself off after I moved it to my Son's room. The printer has been in my Son's room for roughly 3 months now and it has not powered itself off once. Weird.
I have had the printer for roughly 1 year and I have not had any problems except for the power issue mentioned above.
Here is what the printer does:
- Double sided printing
- Ethernet connectivity
- USB Connectivity
- Initiate a scan from the printer or the computer
- Scan to the disk on your computer, scan to email, scan to PDF
- Copy
- Read camera memory cards. Access the cards via network or USB
- Scanner is compatible with Photoshop CS3 on OS X
- Compatible with OS X Tiger, OS X Leopard, Windows XP, Windows Vista
- 2 paper trays: Cassette in the bottom, open paper tray in the rear
- Will make borderless photo prints
Here is what the printer does not do:
- Does not fax
- Does not have an auto document feeder for the scanner
- Canon does not supply Linux drivers, but I have heard that Linux drivers may be available from other sources (see comments made by others about this review for more information).
- Wireless Ethernet is not directly supported. This printer connects to your network with an Ethernet cable.

(More customer reviews)I've had this printer for about a month, and so far found it excellent at everything. I had been using an Epson printer and scanner and both turned into nightmares, I find this machine to be light years ahead, especially in speed and ease of use.
It's easy to setup, the software is easy to use, it's quiet and it prints fast!
Text is nice and crisp, it gives you 3 different settings to choose from, even the fast mode is good quality for most uses if you want to save ink.
Copies are quick and easy and very good quality.
Photos are very sharp, have good contrast, colors are rich overall. Comparing a portrait type shot to the same one I had printed at a lab, It was tough to tell any difference, except this one was a bit lighter. This was on Epson paper, have not tried Canon paper yet which is supposed to work best.
Scanner is easy to use, relatively fast, and quality seems very good.
Overall this machine is a pleasure to use with impressive quality.

(More customer reviews)This is the 2nd Canon Multifunction I have owned. I previously had the MP390, which I thought was an excellent machine. The MX310 is superior and is worth every penny of the price ($99.99 on sale at BB) The print quality (text) is very good. Light earthtone colors appear to be somewhat washed out, but overall the color print quality is very good. The print is the fastest I've seen in a mutifunction. The fax was easy to set up. The copy function is quick with good copy quality. I have not had the opportunity to scan. This machine has a Tri-Color ink cartridge. I would prefer individual cartridges; however, at the price of the machine, I can live with the combo. The one reason I swear by Canon is their tech support, which has consistently been excellent. I had trouble with the driver install on the MX310. The tech support person was on the line within 10-15 seconds and was the most professional, polite and KNOWLEDGEABLE tech person I ever talked to. She actually made me feel as if I was important to Canon. The MX310 is a great value for the price, with typically good Canon quality.

(More customer reviews)I received this printer as a freebie when buying a laptop during the 2008 Black Friday sale. For the price, can not beat it. It replaces an older HP Deskjet 5550. The scanner works great and printing on paper is fast. I would not rely on this for photos. The technology today for photo printing is far superior than what this printer has available but then, this printer is not intended for that. If you are looking for a low cost multi-function printer, I would not hesitate.

(More customer reviews)I've had MFs for a number of years, most recently a Brother MFC7200. That unit offered all the same features as this HP K80, but at twice the price. Despite that, it was only mediocre at performing its tasks, save its poor performance as a scanner. The K80 on the other hand is an excellent printer, fast, clean and quiet. Its fax features are also topnotch, with the 33.6 faxmodem allowing for 3 seconds per page faxing. The scanning clarity and speed is the best of any sheetfed unit I've seen, and copying with and without enlargement is also pretty darned amazing at this price.
However, what really makes the whole pkg so nice is the software that runs quietly in the background and only pops up when needed. When it makes its appearance, it really simplifies whatever task you're working on and obviates the need for any kind of manual.
