Its scanner is 600x1200 dpi so I decided to review the 9575 with better scan capabilities and looks much more elegant that 7675. I read the two reviews on Amazon, both had 2 star ratings. Both are very well written, to the point, so I was afraid to pick this model up. However, I decided to give it a try anyway.
I have tried to address some of the points raised in the other two 2 Star reviews, hope it will help them also, or, they may be correct in their individual circumstances.
The setup was a breeze - the CD accompanying the printer asks for 30 minutes set up time, I got done somewhat short of 30 mins, most of the time going into doing external stuff ("now get paper, load it in tray" etc). Once the setup was complete, all its features worked just fine. No customer support, no rollback of software of conflicts of any kind.
Here are some notes that may help the buyers or those considering to buy-
* On opening the box, in big letters, there is a sign - insert CD before you connect the printer. Follow the simple instructions by the book. You may find the setup as easy as I did.
* I connected the machine wireless hooking up my 2 desktops and 1 laptop. All work fine.
* The earlier 2 star reviews found the printer flimsy. I found it as well constructed as any other printer - give or take a shade here and there. The perception of "Flimsy" could arise from the scanner cover, once lifted, well, it appears "Flimsy" as the hinges swivel and appear loose.
In checking with one of the brick and mortar stores, their response was that it is designed that way so that a BOOK can be photocopied. Rigid hinges make it difficult to position a book.
* Print quality is good, ink capacity is same as 7675 model (approx 500 pages), I am ok with all this. PCMag has some reviews on both and I agree with their assessment -both have similar 3star or 4star rating.
* As far as software conflicts reported earlier go, my machines are loaded- from productivity suites to graphics to even games. No software issues arose. This is my experience, and is not meant to refute what the other two reported.
Overall, a very satisfying machine for such a low price. I am happy with it.

(More customer reviews)After looking through reviews and googling 'best all in one', I rarely saw Brother mentioned. It was either Canon, HP or Epson. So I first purchased the Epson Aristan 800. The first unit was defective with an error loop, so I replaced it with another. It's a nice printer overall with the added bonus of touchscreen, but the fax functions were poor, the paper tray was flimsy and it was a bit too large for where I wanted to put it.
So I returned it, walked around the printer isles for an hour and came upon the Brother MFC-790cw. It had wifi, touchscreen, a phone, a real dial pad, a smaller footprint and a much cheaper price.
So after using it for a week, i'm really happy with the purchase. The wifi software was very easy to setup, and I had no problem installing it in Windows beta 7 unlike the Epson Artisan 800. Receiving and sending faxes is easy as pie. Normal and glossy photo print qualities are very good. And the unit overall looks solidly built.
The only two drawbacks I found was the above normal noise and the below normal print speed. But i'm not running a business with the need to print volumes of documents in a short time, so it's not really much of a concern.
This is an excellent AIO for personal use at a great price.

Dell P703w Wireless All-in-One Photo Printer Review

(More customer reviews)We got these printers in our office with the new laptops....we have shared laser printers so our IT didn't want us using less economical ink jets, but I thought what the hey, I'll pay for my own ink to have it at my desk.
...BAD idea!!
I blew through the first set of cartridges in just three weeks...and maybe 100-150 pages! NOT PHOTOS, regular pages! (well, maybe THREE photos in the mix!)
I thought perhaps the cartridges that came with the machines were "samples"....ie, not full capcity, but it says right on the cartidge "standard yield"!!
So I fished another set of cartridges out of one of the other printer boxes...same thing!
The thing is, the PRINTER, aka "Hal", tells you when you are out of ink...Thank you Hal!Copy quality was just fine in both cases, but it wouldn't allow any further printing until I put new cartridges.
And get this...I can't just keep it to use the scanner!!! Without with out cartridges it deems as "ok", "Hal" won't even let me do THAT!
--PLEEEEASE Open the pod bay doors, HAL.
--I'm sorry, Kathy. I'm afraid I can't do that. ...It kills me to send this to the landfill...and shame on Dell for making it fit for nothing else!

Canon PIXMA MP460 All-In-One Photo Printer (1449B002) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought my PIXMA on more or less no research, other than having really liked Canon's printers in the past. My several year old Canon S600 stopped working suddenly, and my kids needed to print homework ASAP. So I ran to a nearby big box store, and picked one up. The price was reasonable, and I thought the scanner / copier functions would come in handy (although I already had a flatbed scanner...but it was so old-school it still only ran on a parallel cable...remember those kids!?!).
Anyway, it set up in no time and worked perfectly right off the bat. It makes good quality prints, and the photos look fine too me...not heavey on the red. It's also nice to put a memory card right in the printer and print photos without needing to even have the computer on. The copier function, although only used twice in two months, works good. The printer came with lots of bundled hardware. Usually, I have no use for the bundled stuff, it's always the LE edition or very limited in someway. But the Canon Easy Photo print makes it a snap for me or my technophobe wife to print photos in whatever size and on whatever paper without any big headaches. The OCR software is very good. My three year old OmniPro, which I paid a fair amount for, doesn't work as good.
I can't say yet how efficient its toner use is...haven't had it long enough to judge.
There are a couple of downsides. It is SLOW to start. First copies sometimes take long enough to kick in that you wonder if something is wrong. But when it starts, it is quite fast. For plain paper printing with some photos and graphics...the graphics barely slow it down. Full color, high quality photos take a little longer, but are still fast. You just have to be patient for that one page to start. Scanning is the same way...the scanner has to "think" for a bit before it starts, but then it's fast. It is a little bit noisy...nothing to send the neighbors calling the cops or anything...but it's the noisiest ink jet I've owned. The scanning is a little noisy too.
But overall, I'm thrilled to have gotten a good quality item and at a really great price too. I'm very happy with it!! I think most routine users would be too.

Canon Pixma MX300 Office All-On-One Inkjet Printer (2182B002) Review

(More customer reviews)I've owned the MX300 for about two months now. If you're sure about your priorities, this MFP could be fine for you -- it is for me. I mainly print text documents of 5 pages or less for my own use -- I don't need the best text quality. I also wanted the ability to fax, but I don't need to fax more than a page or two every week. I receive a few pages a week as well.
Overall, the MX300 was easy to set up. I wasn't sure how well it would work with my single-line digital phone from Time Warner. The instructions were of little help with fax setup, but it wasn't difficult to figure out, and it works well. Fax quality is very good, very legible.
Photo output is mixed. The smoothness and color is good --it's just that the color is really not accurate at all. Color scans also have this problem. If you can calibrate your monitor to the printer, you can get better color, but I find color is pretty far off from the originals. So if color isn't that important to you, photos are fine.
One nice aspect is the small footprint compared to other MFPs, which was a priority for me. Be aware that the 'starter' ink cartridges that come with this model won't last long -- mine gave out after only a couple of weeks of low-volume printing. The printer will SAY it's out of ink before it actually is (you can turn off the ink monitor if you poke around in the menu). Replacement cartridges cost nearly $45 -- I'm still using the full cartridges, so not sure how long they will last.
Overall, this MFP works well for me -- it's small (though very noisy)and it can fax (send/receive) and it was cheap.

I tried scanning and it is awesome. It lets you choose the software you wish to save your scanned document to. The copying is super easy. I mean, this is a great product overall. And, last but not least, I checked the prices of the ink cartridges, and compared to other brands, these are very affordable. Highly recommended printer!

Platinum Pro905 Wireless All-in-One Printer w/Fax/Duplex Printing Review

(More customer reviews)The following review is for a 901, which functionally contains the same part in question. When operated with a new printhead, the 901 printer prints beautifully and performs its functions as advertised. However, before the first cartridges were fully used (within the first 2-3 months of purchase) two of the color inks clogged the printhead. No amount of running deep cleaning utilities would clear the clogs. The optional light swab as described in help also did not clear the clogs, and the printhead was functionally unusable. This is where the fun starts. In November, 2010,Lexmark made available its 100 series printhead (part # 14N1339) for purchase at its web site, along with ink, as a supply. I was warned of a back-order and I patiently waited a month without complaint for a new printhead. It arrived, I installed the new printhead and for the moment it is working beautifully again. Expecting a recurring problem, I tried to order a back-up for inventory. The web-site now instructs that an 800 number must be called. After waiting my turn, I was told that Lexmark will NOT accept ANY orders to purchase that replacement printhead. I was not given any explanation, nor any hope that the printhead will ever be available for purchase again. My statement that I was perfectly willing to wait months did not sway Lexmark. I was told to search for vendors who might have one left in stock. I wasted my time, and found none. Other than the 901 and 905, I do not know whether the same printhead is used in other inkjet printers. It is simply astonishing that Lexmark is continuing to sell printer models, with the knowledge that a printhead is likely to fail but no replacements will be sold. Even if I was given some explanation of a change in manufacturing sources, it would be somewhat understandable, but Lexmark has offered no explanation. Elsewhere in the reviews on Amazon for the 901 printer, a Lexmark employee suggested that the reviewer contact him. I tried the same address and received no response. I regret that I did not ship this printer back to Lexmark when the first printhead failed. Lexmark has not only created questions of credibility and reliability, but more serious questions about its liability for continuing to sell a product for which it refuses to supply replacement parts. There are serious questions about the representations of Lexmark concerning the fitness of any and all printers utilizing the series 100 printhead, for its expected and intended use. My recommendation is that no one buy any Lexmark printers using the printhead series 100 part 14N1339 until Lexmark explains its refusal to sell replacement printheads, and its proposed remedies.

Epson NX300 All-In-One Printer Print/Copy/Scan/Fax (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I've had this a couple months. It prints fine but I am not thrilled about the ink system. There's a black and then 3 individual colors and if even one color is out, you can't print anything. When black was out, it wouldn't even let me print text in color. DO NOT try to buy compatible ink replacements because they won't work. That is a pain. I talked to Cartridge World about refills and they said once the low ink signal comes up, it's too late to refill because it triggers an electronic thing that they can't fix and the printer won't recognize it. So Epson really has you pinned on the buying their name brand ink. Best deal is at Best Buy - black single is $15.59 and colors are $11.49 each. That beats online prices. But I sure go through it...I print a lot of letters with photos and stuff like that.

(More customer reviews)Lexmark made the wireless setup easy vis the enclosed computer CD installation program. I liked the automatic two sided printing too. Included in the box are extended life ink cartridges. Usually with a new printer you get limited yield cartridges.
I was able to scan pictures remotely via the wireless connection...very slick. I haven't tried the fax yet but the copy features work fine. The power is supplied via cord directly to the printer....no transformer to trip over. Print quality is good, typical ink jet. The box said the warranty is 5 years with registration. I had a Lexmark two printers ago and had trouble 3 times. Lexmark replaced the printer with a new on each time with shipping both ways at their expense.

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Lexmark X2600 primarily because, out of all the printers on the shelves, this was the cheapest. I wasn't looking for quality--I just needed something that could print and scan. It came without a USB cable or black ink. The cable I could understand--it's pretty much a given for any printer--but the ink was a little odd. Why include color but not black?
I picked up some black ink along with the printer since I only intended to print text files. The print quality is mediocre, but you get what you pay for. I'd be willing to let this slide and would probably never write this review if not for what happened next.
Only a couple weeks after purchasing the printer, having printed, at most, about fifty or so black and white pages, I was informed that the included color ink cartridge was about to run out. I had no idea why it was using color ink to print black, but I didn't really care. Finally, after sending it a print job one day, a warning popped up that the color cartridge was completely empty. That's annoying, but whatever. I click ok and re-send the print job. The warning pops up again. It won't let me print. I make sure "black-only" is selected in the options menu. No dice.
I assume there's some way around this. There's no way an empty color cartridge would seriously prevent you from printing in black. No printer I've owned has ever done that. I ring up tech support and am told that, BY DESIGN, the Lexmark 2600 will not print AT ALL without a color ink cartridge. I'm sorry, but that's just inexcusable. Poor print quality? Fine. Lousy ink levels? Sure. But you're telling me I have to spend $40 on ink I'm never going to use on a printer that costs only ten dollars more so I can print in black and white?
If not for the scanner--which still works, thank god--I would have a $50 paper weight right now. I've never encountered such a bold-faced attempt to force the consumer to purchase ink. I'm no stranger to ink cartridges that are only half-filled or claim to be "out" when there are still 100 prints left in them, but this is a new low. Let this serve as a lesson. Even if you're on a tight budget, go ahead and spend the extra money and buy from a reputable company. Fifty dollars sounds like a great deal, right up until you have to spend another forty dollars less than a month later. Avoid Lexmark at all cost!

Cons:
1. Setting up wireless connection by following the quick start guide is a huge mistake.
I tried this on a Vista machine. The machine can print for about 30 minutes, and it goes offline. The HP imaging device monitor cannot detect the device, and it refused to launch. After about 1 hour I realized the IP address of the machine was changed because I restarted everything.
To avoid the problem, the best way to setup the machine is:
1. Setup network connection from the machine menu, do not use the setup CD.
2. Once the machine is connected, go to the wireless router config menu, and reserve the IP address for the machine. Now the machine will always use the same IP address.
3. Install the printer driver. You can copy the setup CD to the harddrive to speed up the installation process.
4. Run setup.exe, select add a device->through the network. Your machine should be detected by the setup program, and you should be able glide from here.
Good luck!
One more thing, when you scan make sure the firewall does not block the communication between the machine and the scanning software.

(More customer reviews)Recently upgraded to MS Vista and almost at the same time, ran out of ink on my two HP printers, one for pictures and an older All in One. The L7580 had just been released and I was particularly interested in its ability to print using less ink at a resultant cost savings over my two existing printers. When I got it and printed out the test page, I jumped because of the speed at which the page kicked out. I had to use this with a temporary HP print driver on my Vista machine, but the full Vista driver is now available. Installed the new driver (all 360 Mbytes) without any problems. I am happy with all its features. Have not had any problems with this since I took it out of the package. The front display shows the status of your ink cartridges which is helpful. Also, the ink cartridges now all use the same number on the package so you can easily find replacement cartridges without having to remember multiple numbers. Picture and scanner quality is excellent for my standards and needs. It comes with a slot to insert memory cards, but since I use Photoshop to prepare my pictures, I have never used this feature on this system. If this is important, then the larger display of the next model up would be desirable. Four stars means I am very happy with this printer. I would consider five stars if I was more of an aficianado of the various printers out there and could speak more knowledgeably about other models.

It comes with a step-by-step wizard and after a few tries, even got the fax machine set up. The machine will talk to you to let you know when it's printing and when it's finished printing. If you run out of ink, it will tell you to reorder. Plus, it doesn' just shut down if you're out of color. It will just prompt you and you can print your document in black & white. Great product...hasn't disappointed me yet.

However, after scanning something from it only once, which worked fine, the software is no longer opening and giving me errors. I have tried everything- uninstall, reinstall, firmware updates, everything they suggested to do on their website, etc. I now have a large black multifunction printer that only has one function- it does still print, but I cannot scan or use the software. When I emailed Kodak, they emailed back that because this printer was so successful, they were backlogged on support questions. Hmmmm. That does not sound good. Anyway. You may want to try it and hopefully have better luck than us.
I have wasted several hours on this thing. Will update this if I figure it out, but for now, I cannot give this a good review. It is possible that Windoze is the culprit or a combination of them both.
UPDATE- I should have remembered to update this earlier. I was able to use Adobe to get the scanner function to work. I don't hate this printer, but I don't love it either. I definitely don't want to have to spend hours trying to get equipment to work. I mean it's a printer- I just want to turn it on and use it. The problem was certainly in Kodak's software and should have been figured out by them.

I am providing more detail that should support my conclusions AFTER the evaluation section. Evaluation

This is, esentially, the HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All-In-One Printer with an extra paper tray, 3 extra ink cartridges and some promo materials. The unit I reviewed did not have the extra paper tray.

The reviewed unit meets the claim of it being a all-in-one solution. While it is not likely that any individual user would take advantage of all its features on a regular basis, it is reassuring to know that the features are there. The supplied software and the printer's own console interface allow for a tremenduous amount of flexibility and customization. Some of the more advanced features will require an above-average level of computer expertise but, even without a lot of customization, this will be a useful, worthy printing/faxing/copying/scanning appliance.
While the superior quality of output would make this printer a good 'small office' candidate, its speed would probably disqualify it if the small office was doing any significant amount printing. I provided some personal benchmarks so that any prospective small business buyer could decide. As a 'home' printer, this comes as close to perfect as they come. I will be using it as a home printer so please do interpret my rating within that context.
A minor observation regarding 'design'. I found it interesting that some of the functions available on the touch screen are duplicated on physical buttons on the printer's console. This was striking because I actually saw this model for sale at New York's Fifth Ave. Apple store. It immediately occured to me that an Apple designer would have none of those buttons if allowed to redesign the product. This is not criticism, it's only an observation, also prompted by the fact that, for example, when specifying the number of copies to be printed, I could NOT use the physical number pad but had to punch the number on the virtual keypad displayed on the touch screen.
The strong, almost violent shaking the printer brings itself to when not on a perfectly steady surface was a little disturbing to me. I have little doubt that, if improperly placed, the printer would quickly lose its printheads alignment and it might even experience other technical trouble.
Finally, I am happy that the HP Tech support solved my Vista-related problem but it would have been better if a printer that was manufatured only a few days before I received it had an updated CD or, at least, a flyer advising Vista users how to obtain the updated driver.
Considering all of the above, the this printer gets a strong, very positive 4 stars. However, my view is that the OfficeJet Pro is basically a 'home' or 'home office' unit, not a 'small business' printer. As such, I see no advantage in purchasing the Premier' model instead of the 'one paper tray', less expensive version.

The HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All-In-One Printer integrates print, copy, fax, scan document and photo-processing functions. HP supplies the printer itself, 'starter' ink cartridges, print heads and a phone wire. Ethernet or USB cables are not included. Thin manuals are provided for wireless and FAX setup. A quick installation poster is provided as well. The full 300+ manual can be downloaded from the HP site. The CD has drivers for the several supported Operating Systems and a number of additional applications such as OCR (optical character recognition).
Besides the Ethernet and USB ports, other physical IO include 2 telephone jacks in the back and slots for several types of memory cards in the front. The printer can be controlled from a PC or directly through a touch-screen color display and several buttons that generally duplicate options on the menus available through the touch-screen interface. To satisfy energy saving concerns, the printer goes to sleep if not used for a while but it can be reactivated by either touching the screen or one of the buttons or remotely from a networked workstation. Software
--------
Drivers are available for the most recent flavors of Windows (Vista, XP, 2000) and for the Mac. It can be configured to either a local printer, connected to a PC via a USB cable or as a network printer, wired (Ethernet) or wireless (802.11g). Another option (not tested by me) would be for one PC to connect the printer via USB and then share it over the network. I experienced problems installing the Vista drivers but HP's tech support addressed it by replacing the CD-supplied drivers with a version available at HP's site.
While installing the drivers, HP will also install a number of applications and services. Of these the HP Solutions Center is the most versatile. It monitors the printer's status, including the ink levels and allows for configuring printing, scanning, faxing and other capabilities such as the forwarding of documents to network folders (tested) or to email (not tested yet). In addition, the home page can be used to control fax and scan operations, to convert a graphic image to text and to launch other applications such as the HP Photosmart Essential. I posted images of the Home and Configuration screens.
I did not fully test the Photosmart Essential application yet but I expect it to meet most basic photo management and printing needs and perhaps more.
If staying with the defaults at drivers installation, HP will install other, generally unneeded or unwelcome applications and services. One of them, the HP Customer Participation Program seems to be taking hundreds of megabytes but not doing anything useful from the end-user's point of view. I found Web discussions indicating that the 'program' was guilty of a memory leak. I removed it. Another unwelcome (to me) addition is the 'Yahoo Toolbar' to my Internet Explorer which I don't use anyway. This was done without asking for my permission. I had to use Vista's Control Panel to remove it after the fact.
Finally, one 'glitch' that occured after my initial installation from the supplied HP disk had a pop-up constantly telling me that the "HP product assistant" had to be installed or updated and asking me to provide a path. Providing the path for the requested file which I found burried 3 levels deep inside the supplied CD, was not helping and the cycle kept repeating endlessly. Some Web research revealed that this was a common problem and there were not many known solutions. I was able to find at the HP site a utility that tried to remove all HP drivers software from my PC but, 4 reboots later and after re-installing the drivers, the popup returned. A call to the HP support was answered and a technician was able to address the problem after taking over my computer, performing the 'cleanup' job that I tried myself and then installing an updated version of the drivers, downloaded from the HP site. The file name for Vista 32-bit is OJP8500vA909_Full_12.exe. I will post an image showing how to get to the drivers from the HP Solution Center. The HP suppport remediation completed after about 2 hours. The HP technician stated that 'only Vista' installations experience this problem. XP or Mac users should be safe.
Print
-----
Ink-jet printing outputs clean documents even on the 'normal' resolution. Printouts can be either color or black and white, one-sided or two-sided. Print quality can be set to anything form 'general everyday printing' to presentation, photo-quality or to ink-saving 'fast/economical printing'. The supplied paper tray can be loaded with up to 250 sheets up to 'legal' size. One-sided print speed is adequate but duplex printing can be quite slow.
The print operation appears to involved a great deal of physical movement inside the printer. If placed on anything but a very steady platform, the printer tends to swing quite violently from left to right and back. This had me concerned enough to move it from its initial location.
Copy
----
The copy function allows for anything from one-sided/one-sided to two-sided/two-sided copies. As in the case of printing, two-sided copies are much slower to produce. The copy quality is good enough to make the copy almost indistinguishable from the original.
Fax
---
I did not fully test the FAX capabilities but it's worth menioning that a lot of flexibility is provided, including the ability to direct the faxes to a network folder (which I did test with the scan function) rather than having them printed. It is also possible to block 'junk' faxes by maintaining a list of the offending phone numbers.
Scanner
-------
As a scanner, one can file the output to any of up to 10 preset network folders or if when the scanning process is initiated from a PC, output can be directed to a designated user's local folder. Scanned documents can be translated to text via the integrated OCR function. My experiment with a printed document produced with Microsoft Word returned 100% accuracy for content but, as expected, the formatting (headers, footers, margins) was not properly handled.

There are separate buttons for each function, which are fairly easy to use.However There are 2 issues that you need to consider if you are considering this printer 1. The ADF is VERY sensitive, and tricky to use.If you are reading this because you are having a problem, push the paper very very slowly forward. The moment you hear the beep, stop, and push start for the scan to start.
2.It has separate ink cartridges, which sounds great, you don't have to pay for a whole cartridge if only one colour runs out. BUT if one colour runs out the printer stops working, which means you have to have spares.I found the printing speed very slow too, but for home use that isn't too serious.I would proceed with caution on this printer. I returned mine this morning, and am trying to decide what to replace it with.

Epson Stylus NX420 Color Ink Jet All-in-One (C11CA80201) Review

(More customer reviews)I've been purchasing many printers for nearly two decades and because we do so much printing, we go through a lot of printers and have went through the negatives such as expensive ink, paper getting stuck and no easy way of removing it, getting stuck and ruining the spools or certain attachments breaking off. And needless to say, I've come to the point where I know what kind of printer to buy and what I'm willing to spend on one.
And recently through Amazon Vine I was able to test out the Epson Stylus NX420 Color Ink Jet All-In-One. For one, Epson has been a wonderful brand when it comes to printers, scanners, etc. In the two decades of using Epson printers, I've come upon a few that have caused me some gray hairs mainly due to the paper carriage and paper getting stuck. But I've gone through the motions of testing this printer out and I have to say, for its price at under $70, this is a very good printer for the budget-conscious person.
A. Installation
Installation was easy. After removing the plastic and installing the ink cartridges which was easy, just plug it in to your electrical outlet and because it is a wireless printer, just enter your wi-fi security code and install the software on your computer (test on a Mac and PC) and no problems. Printing right off the bat. (Note: The printer also comes with a USB plug-in).
B. Copying
The first step was copying a few documents and printing it out. Sure enough, the copy and print using the panel controls was easy and straightforward. Press copy and how many pages and that's it.
C. Scanner
The scanner resolution is 5760x1440 dpi and scanner resolution is 2400 dpi. I do a lot of scanning especially on my Epson Perfection scanner but this time I tried scanning everything from DVD and Blu-ray to CD inserts and seeing how good the quality is and for the most part, I was impressed and I liked the amount of space given for scanning. It's not small and also, easy to use.
D. Printer
This printer supposedly prints B/W pages at 35 ppm and color at 15 ppm. I was surprised by how quick it took to print. No long warmup, it just started printing after a few second of pressing print and I like that.
E. Paper Carriage
This is a top loading printing device. I am now a big proponent for flat-laying printing devices as top-loading printers have caused me nothing but grief in the past. I will say that I like how Epson has put a plastic guard right on the top and made the stand behind the paper easy to use and not detachable. I like how the paper holder on the front comes out, is collapsible and easy to put back up again. There is no fail-safe in the back to pull out the paper if your printer eats up your paper and for me, it's important to have that capability.
And like all printers, you get bundled software and for its price at under $70, that's pretty good.
But as I mentioned the positives, what are the negatives?
- One thing I noticed, especially with my parents is they love the ability to take their flash card from their camera, put it into a slot in the printer and print from that. This is not the printer that can do that and you usually have to pay around near a $100 for that capability.
- Cost of ink. Truthfully, ink is expensive no matter what printer you buy. Fortunately, Epson and HP are the most reasonable (sorry Lexmark, you're prices and the amount of ink in those cartridges are not reasonable) and easy to find at stores. It is true that you can buy each cartridge at around $8.99 but in this case, you have four cartridges (one black, three color). Black goes for $15.99 while color goes around $30+. This is where HP tends to rival Epson and that's the pricing of the color ink. But if you don't use your printer for color printing and are mostly focused on black and white printing, then at $15.99, that's usually the average ($13-$18).
- No rear paper remover if your papers get garbled and stuck. No easy way to pull it off. Granted, I have not had that experience with this printer but having had many printers damaged because of bad paper, its useful to have that capability to go from the back and pull it out. You can't do that with this printer.
JUDGMENT CALL:
Compared to other printers around $39-$69, I have to admit that you get a lot for your money with the Epson Stylus NX420. Printing is very good, speed is very good, ease of use is very good but there are some other things that people may need (especially the flash card capability or even capability to print on photos via a special carriage) which requires for the user to spend about $40-$50 for the next models up.
But this printer is for those who don't need all the bells and whistles. Students that just need a printer that can scan, copy and print especially if you are just using it for black and white printing and occasional color and need that wi-fi capability. So, for its price and how it performed during my tests, it's a very good all-in-one printer for its price point. Definitely recommended!
