Epson Stylus CX7000F All-in-One Printer (C11C676001) Review

Average Reviews:

So frustrating.
I am on my 2nd replacement printer (my 3rd CX7000F in all) and it, too, DOES NOT work. This model will tell you a brand new ink cartridge needs to be replaced. I wasted a couple extra hundred dollars on more ink, because I thought the cartridge that came from the store was used. Then I learned that this is an Epson problem.
I will be calling tech support again on Monday. This saga has been ongoing since May. (It's July). I appreciate Epson sending me replacement printers, but since they don't work, it's of no use. I don't know who is doing the manufacturing, but they have screwed up a component. Too bad for Epson, because I will never buy another one of their printers again.
DO NOT BUY!!!!

Canon PIXMA MP510 All-in-One Photo Printer (1450B002) Review

Canon PIXMA MP510 All-in-One Photo Printer (1450B002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My purchase from Amazon yielded a printer that had an issue. Canon promptly replaced with a brand new unit. The printer is plenty fast. Does a great job with text, nice and crisp, which is my primary concern whenever I purchase a printer. Printing on standard paper my photos look great. Looking forward to trying them on photo paper and I imagine the results will be even better. Copying, works great and copies look near identical to originals. Scanning function works great too with scans that can be used in print and elsewhere. At $150 this printer is the way to go. Of course you could spend twice as much and get something quicker but as too quality of output I am not sure the average user would see much of a difference without magnification. I have no qualms about recommending this product. One last note... it is great to have the separate ink carts. The black is twice as large as the 3 colored carts.
Thanks Canon

Epson Stylus CX3810 All In One Review

Epson Stylus CX3810 All In One
Average Reviews:

Excellent value. Prints, copies, flatbed scans as expected. Uniquely prints photos that are smug and water resistant. No other multi-function manufacturer offers that.
Well engineered. Smooth and easy setup. Photos are excellent for a multi-function, nearly as good as my Epson Picturemate.
I thought about buying the more expensive Epson CX5800F because it offers fax. I seldom use fax so instead I'll just scan in the document, then either email or use internet fax.
My only knock is that this is marketed under the overloaded term "All in one" so I guess that makes the CX5800F an "All-er in one". It would be so much clearer if the industry adopted acronyms like PSC or PSCF to clearly distinguish major functions at a glance.

Canon Pixma MX300 Office All-On-One Inkjet Printer (2182B002) Review

Canon Pixma MX300 Office All-On-One Inkjet Printer (2182B002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned the MX300 for about two months now. If you're sure about your priorities, this MFP could be fine for you -- it is for me. I mainly print text documents of 5 pages or less for my own use -- I don't need the best text quality. I also wanted the ability to fax, but I don't need to fax more than a page or two every week. I receive a few pages a week as well.
Overall, the MX300 was easy to set up. I wasn't sure how well it would work with my single-line digital phone from Time Warner. The instructions were of little help with fax setup, but it wasn't difficult to figure out, and it works well. Fax quality is very good, very legible.
Photo output is mixed. The smoothness and color is good --it's just that the color is really not accurate at all. Color scans also have this problem. If you can calibrate your monitor to the printer, you can get better color, but I find color is pretty far off from the originals. So if color isn't that important to you, photos are fine.
One nice aspect is the small footprint compared to other MFPs, which was a priority for me. Be aware that the 'starter' ink cartridges that come with this model won't last long -- mine gave out after only a couple of weeks of low-volume printing. The printer will SAY it's out of ink before it actually is (you can turn off the ink monitor if you poke around in the menu). Replacement cartridges cost nearly $45 -- I'm still using the full cartridges, so not sure how long they will last.
Overall, this MFP works well for me -- it's small (though very noisy)and it can fax (send/receive) and it was cheap.

Brother MFC-240C Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer with Fax Review

Brother MFC-240C Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer with Fax
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was hesitant to purchase this based on all the mediocre reviews, but I am extremely happy with the 240c. I think its about the best multi-function you can get for under a hundred bucks (with the possible exception of tha Canon Pixma). First, a few of these reviews contain critical errors about the unit. First: It IS possible to scan multiple documents into a single PDF file. One simple way is to load up your documents into the top paper feeder, then scan to PDF, and every page it scans will be put into the same file. Another way to do it is to use the Presto Pagemanager software that comes on the installation CD. Second: the 240c DOES have incoming fax capabilities...you have to enable it in the Fax options on the unit's menu setup (not on your computer). It does not have a handset so you cannot use it as a phone, but at least on the 240c that I have, it can indeed receive faxes. Third: the reason the unit will not print anything even if only one cartridge is blank is because it uses a suction type cart (different from most inkjets), and damage to the unit will occur if an empty cartridge is left in. That said, here's my review.
Build quality is overall very durable, with the possible exception of the paper tray. It won't turn any heads with its bland utilitarian appearance, but its compact and sturdy for home or home office usage. It also looks like an office machine, as opposed to the flimsy Fisher-Price looking offerings from HP and Lexmark. The controls are laid out sufficiently and you should be able to figure things out by surfing through the unit's menu, although there are alot of setup options so you may have to do some searching. The only complaints about the design are the small, non-backlit display and the paper tray. The paper tray is more like a paper container with a lid, that loads like a cartridge. If you only print on one type of paper its fine, but if you want to switch and print envelopes, 4X6, etc., it can do it but you have to take the tray out, take out all the paper, adjust the slider, then put in the new paper and re-insert.
Print and scan quality are just fine. In fact, the scanner is very impressive and scans are much better quality than the Canon it replaced. Print quality is just fine...I dont see any washed out colors or anything else others have noted. Its prints as good as any unit will under a hundred bucks. The copy and scan features work just great and fast. You can either use the computer to make copies or you can bypass your PC altogether and use it as a standalone copier. Most of the features can be run either from the software or the unit itself, which is great. The top-feeding document accepter is a huge time saver. Also, the lid on the scanner is hinged allowing you to scan thicker items, like books, easily.
As far as ink usage, some settings must be adjusted to get longer life. First, disable "bi-directional printing" as it uses alot of ink and wrinkles the paper. Set the paper-type to "plain." This is huge, because if you dont, even if you select grayscale printing, it will pull ink from the color cartidges. Also, if you print mostly text, set the print quality to the "fast" settings, and it looks just fine. You want to conserve ink, since these cartridges run about 20-25 bucks for black, and around 12-14 for each color. But, the cartridges are huge so they should last average users a while. For heavy office use, you may want to look at a a higher end or laser model.
The fax feature I dont use so I cant comment much on how that works. It also accepts most major memory cards for photo printing, but without a preview screen your better off printing pics from your computer. It is also worth noting that this unit IS Mac compatible (many of the sub-$100 machines aren't), although I had to update the drivers and software from Brother's website after installing the CD to get some scanning features to work. I'm assuming this has something to do with the whole Intel / PPC switch. I'd highly advise you to do the same...their site is just their name, and the update offerings fixed the few bugs I encountered.
Overall I am very impressed with this unit. I had returned an HP c3180 multi-function because it couldnt hold a handle to this as far as overall quality and value. Highly recommended for home and light home office use.

Canon PIXMA MP450 All-In-One Photo Printer Review

Canon PIXMA MP450 All-In-One Photo Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not my first Canon, I used them for years and they seem indestructible. I get this MP 450 from Amazon, before it get on the market, and just love it. It is a beautiful little thing, sleek and shiny in black and silver, white a nice adjustable LCD in full colour.
This multifunction is quite small (nice feature if you don't want to clutter your work space) and it does everything his big sister do (I had the huge mp 780 which I was not so found of). The MP 450 works nicely, smoothly and even faster. Scans and copies are sharp and clear, printing is crisp, it's a real pleasure to use.

Often one says it's better to have a cartridge for each colour, I am not so sure: when one is empty, the others follow shortly after. I love having just 2 cartridges to watch and manage (dealing with 4 or 5, you're always running at the shop unless you store a lot). By the way it is really a two (2) cartridges printer (event though I read otherwise on some websites. Furthermore, every time you change one of these, you get a new head, (that means sharp printing). But, even with that, the ink cost is quite low, a very important feature for me as I print a lot of text. It even "duplex print, so you use both side of paper. Furthermore, included are two high capacity cartridges , but I didn't compared theses the regular ones, or found any info on theses, but this is a nice little plus.
Photo and colour printing are astounding, you can modify the setting to your own tastes. The software bundle is full of nice surprises, like Arcsoft photo suite, which reassemble a little to Photoshop but is far much easier to use) , and two scanner utilities.
So I am very glad to have wait for the MP 450. And hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do. Good luck!

Canon Pixma MP530 Office All-In-One Inkjet Photo Printer Review

Canon Pixma MP530 Office All-In-One Inkjet Photo Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You should be aware that this printer has a serious "ink low" behavior. When any ink cartridge is getting low (which still means a lot of ink left by the way), it changes the Fax reception model. Instead of printing your faxes as they arrive, it dumps them into memory. So, even though yellow (say) is low, it will not print your B&W fax!
It takes more than 5 steps to print the fax and delete it (menu, scroll to memory item, ok, scroll to print, OK document, scroll to print all pages, ok, menu to go up, scroll to delete, ok to delete, ok to delete, menu to get out).
Worse, after a couple of these, the memory is mixed up. So, when you want to send a Fax, it will say "memory full" even though the memory is empty. You then have to power cycle the printer (hold down on/off for 1 second, wait 10 seconds, power on, wait for it to get ready (another 10-20 seconds).
This means you either have to waste ink by throwing out cartridges before they are empty, or you have to deal with this mess. Canon says there is no workaround or fix for this.
There are 3 other problems with copying you should know before you buy (I wish I did):
1. You cannot use the Auto Document Feeder (sheet feeder) when copying or scanning with any setting in auto (exposure, size, etc). It does not make any of that clear, so if you find it refuses the auto doc feeder, reset everything to manual :-(
2. Black duplex printing uses color cartridges for one of the sides, so uses the more expensive ink. That is, it does not use the blank ink for both sides.
3. Copying speeds are much slower than the blurb implies. If you make 10 copies of one page, it is as fast as they say. If you copy multiple pages, each one takes much much longer, does the scan, and then does the print. Also, if any setting is in auto mode, it does a two pass scan (one to check the page), and that takes a really long time.

Canon Pixma MP520 Photo All-On-One Inkjet Printer (2178B002) Review

Canon Pixma MP520 Photo All-On-One Inkjet Printer (2178B002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It has both front and rear paper feeders. I can load two types of papers and/or envelops and select the source either with a button or through computer. This is the very best part. What I hate about HP printers: they all have only front feeder. Because front-fed papers must go a 180 degree sharp turn around, they are never able to do trouble-free envelop and double-side printing. Prints always miss top or bottom, because paper is fed either too fast or too slow, absolutely no consistency. If you print large international mailing labels/forms, you know what I mean. Paper jam is your routine with HP. Canon has no such problems at all, at least with its rear feeder.
It uses 4 separated ink cartridges for all 4 colors. With those 3-in-one cartridges, I was always scared to print graphics, because one color always went faster and the entire cartridge must be thrown away. Now I can just replace a single color and I can physically see ink level!!! Even better, these cartridges are very easy to refill. I must admit that the color cartridges popped out by themselves and I think I'll call Canon like the other reviewer. With HP, cartridges are built with print headers, making them very expensive, difficult to refill and, if doable, for few times only before the printer head got clogged and must be replaced.
More expensive Canon all-in-one, such as MP530, MP830 and MX700, are all way too huge! This one is still quite big compared to printer-only models, but I still can put it on my desktop fine. Because it is not so tall and has a flat top, I can put my stationary plate on it; so it is big but does not waste the space.
Cheaper Canon AIO, such as MX300 and MP470, all use the stupid cartridges like HP and you'll pay much more on ink! Before you buy a printer, make sure it uses at least 4 individual cartridges. For Canon current models, it means "8" series cartridges (CLI-8C/M/Y).
I can't list all the good points, just these are enough: only $110, lowest cost on ink, rear feeder (& front!) and not huge. It does all the things for me and it does them all well at the lowest cost. For some people, what it does not do: fax and CD/DVD printing (only for special and more expensive blank disks).
The very similar MP610 can print CD/DVD with an optional CD tray that you can buy from eBay or make your own. MP610 uses one more extra ink, a dye black for color printing for better contrast. MP520 uses only one pigmented black ink that's good for water resistance but slightly less ideal than dye ink for photos. Overall, MP610 produces doubled resolutions over MP520, which really does not matter to me as MP520's resolutions are already superb and it's 4 lb lighter, slightly smaller and $100 less than MP610 and one less ink tank to deal with.
MP610 can also do automatic duplexing while this MP520 can do it manually only. Auto duplex is very cool, but it is very slow compared to manual duplex, so you may end up seldom use it and miss nothing with a MP520.
So, if you do lots of top-quality photo and/or CD/DVD printing, then go with the MP610. If you need fax, add a MX300 just for that function for only $58 from Walmart; don't buy the MP530 etc. - they are huge! If you don't print much, MX300 is the one and the only one you need. Otherwise, stay with MP520. In any case, never go HP. Don't go Epson neither because their integrated printer heads (non-removable) tend to clog and no way to replace or fix. If a Cannon printer head (removable) gets clogged, you can easily take it out and clean it with a bottle of compressed air. I know what I'm talking about.
