(More customer reviews)We got these printers in our office with the new laptops....we have shared laser printers so our IT didn't want us using less economical ink jets, but I thought what the hey, I'll pay for my own ink to have it at my desk.
...BAD idea!!
I blew through the first set of cartridges in just three weeks...and maybe 100-150 pages! NOT PHOTOS, regular pages! (well, maybe THREE photos in the mix!)
I thought perhaps the cartridges that came with the machines were "samples"....ie, not full capcity, but it says right on the cartidge "standard yield"!!
So I fished another set of cartridges out of one of the other printer boxes...same thing!
The thing is, the PRINTER, aka "Hal", tells you when you are out of ink...Thank you Hal!Copy quality was just fine in both cases, but it wouldn't allow any further printing until I put new cartridges.
And get this...I can't just keep it to use the scanner!!! Without with out cartridges it deems as "ok", "Hal" won't even let me do THAT!
--PLEEEEASE Open the pod bay doors, HAL.
--I'm sorry, Kathy. I'm afraid I can't do that. ...It kills me to send this to the landfill...and shame on Dell for making it fit for nothing else!

Kodak EasyShare 5500 All-in-One Printer Print, Copy, Scan, and Fax (1600105) Review

(More customer reviews)I WAS in the market for a replacement for my aging Lexmark X6100 All-In-One so I was very up beat when I found out that Kodak has come up with "cheap ink" AiO printer line.
I got the 5500 at Best Buy for what I though was a decent price of $199.
I set it up, printed a demo page, calibrated the printer and printed a diagnostic page. Printer was pretty slow and noisy but worked fine so far. Then I sent to it a 4x6 photograph and got the familiar and popular error saying that "the print head is missing or needs to be replaced". After reinstalling the print head over and over as suggested by the diagnostic message, I gave up after loosing 4 hrs of my life. Next day, I called the Customer Support at Kodak. The person with a very high level of certainty diagnosed my issue as a 'faulty print head' - seemingly a very popular cause with this printer. The print head was to arrive overnight - It arrived 3 days later. Replacing the head did not help. So, I went to the Kodak website and learned that there is a new firmware for this printer. After uploading the new firmware to the printer it went dumb. It was spitting out two sheets and then wrinkling up and spitting out more pages. No way to stop it except pulling the plug. So, I did. Next day, convinced that it must be an isolated issue, I went to Best Buy to replace the printer. I went through the exact same initial steps again and even got further this time. I was able to print 8 4x6 color photos in the "Best" mode, which looked pretty good as far as color saturation, but were a bit skewed. They also used up close to 50% of my color ink cartridge! So, I estimate that I can get probably only about 20-25 such prints out of a full color ink cartridge, which is much much less than the advertised 35. Then I tried the double sided print from a network computer and found out that the duplex option is disabled on every computer except the one to which the printer is physically connected. This is of course not advertised anywhere. So, I decided to test the double sided printing on the host. It was sloooooooooooow and not printing out a large part of the top of the page. So, I said to my self - Ok, there must surely be a good reason for the new firmware to be offered on Kodak's website. So, I uploaded it again and...the printer went dumb again...
I actually read the reviews on Amazon and still decided to give this printer a try "because it looked sooo nice and offered sooo much". I said to myself, what the heck - I am a pretty savvy techie - I can certainly do better than these "Amazon amateurs". Well, now I am joining what actually turned out to be a pretty wise Amazon crowd with my tail and ears curled all the way down in my disappointment.
Next day, I returned the second printer and am sticking to my old Lexmark for time being.
Kodak 5500 and especially its software and firmware are of poor quality. Endless errors, less than ideal prints, DON'T BUY. Consider yourself warned.

One more thing - "friendly Kodak guy". Please spare me your comment...

Kodak ESP 9 All-in-One Printer Review

(More customer reviews)First off, I ordered this printer on a home shopping network because I was so impressed with everything this printer offered. However, after I ordered it, I was really worried because of so many negative reviews, I was SO WORRIED in fact that I had just about decided that when my printer did arrive through UPS, I was going to send it back right away! Well, thank goodness I didn't do that, I decided I have 30 days to try it and if I don't like it, I can always send it back. When you first take your printer out of the box, there is alot of tape and styrofoam blocks that you have to take off and out of the printer, so make sure you get all of it, there are even some styrofoam blocks taped inside where the ink cartridges go.
Installing this printer was absolutely the easiest I have ever done on any printer. (took me less than 10 minutes!) My old HP printer took almost an hour to install! I connected my printer using my USB port first, then I also installed it using the wireless connection....everything went perfectly. Then came the printing!
I printed out 2 documents, one in color and the other in black and white, both came out perfectly. No errors in printing and the colors and blacks were perfect. I have had my printer for 3 days now and I am still printing photos, so far I have printed out about 12 4x6 color photos and about 40 black and white documents (front and back sides with the 2 sided printing option) My ink cartridges are now showing 60% full in color and 70% full in black. One thing you want to make sure of is that you use only KODAK paper because when I used my old HP photo paper, the colors were not as vivid as when I used the Kodak paper. (some of the customer complaints were about the reds not being very red and yellows not yellow) When I use my Kodak Premium Photo paper, the photos come out flawless, absolutely stunning in detail!Reds are just as red as can be!!! On my old HP paper, the photos still came out great but just not as vivid as on the Kodak paper.
One thing I did have to do is update the drivers on the Kodak website, because when I would go to print a 2 sided document (which you have to do all the necessary adjustments in the printers options menu) it would print the first side perfectly but when you turned your paper over, the text would be upside down! (hmmm!) AFTER I updated my drivers on the Kodak Website, it fixed that issue and now prints a 2 sided document like it is supposed to. The only other issue I had was when I used my "duplexer" after I updated my drivers, all of a sudden my duplexer started printing only in black and white. I tried to make the necessary adjustments in the printer menu but nothing worked. So I called tech support (which was very fast and courteous towards me, no waiting and very fast and knowledgeable about this printer) and the girl told me to go in and reset the printer to "default settings" under the configure settings menu, so I did and then the duplexer started printing in color and/or black and white like it is supposed to do!!!
Now everything is like it should be. The printer is not noisy at all while printing, it is however "a little noisy" while "spooling" or when you first turn your printer on and it performs it's usual setting up functions. Not so noisy that it bothers me in the least, but some people referred to the noise as being so terribly loud, mine is not that loud at all...yes it is a little louder than my old HP but not so loud that it is a concern. (I guess that is a big issue for some people)
The touchscreen is a very nice feature and works like a charm! The screen on the front is very clear and large and you can preview and edit your photos before you print them out directly from your printer!
Another thing that was a big complaint with alot of people is how the paper shoots out of this printer. WRONG! I don't think alot of those people even realized that when you pull out the paper catcher (which is located right above the paper drawers) there is a 3/4 inch lip or piece on the end that you have to slide up first. (I didn't even notice it there until yesterday!) It folds flat down on the paper catcher and it is hard to notice that piece at first but after I realized it folds UP and OUT, it catches ALOT of paper!!!! I printed out a bunch of documents and it caught everyone of them. Nothing flew out of my printer.
The paper drawers are really great, you can put regular printer paper in the bottom drawer and photo paper in the drawer just above it and the printer automatically knows what paper to use. The 2 sided printing is really great, it prints the first side of your paper, then sucks the paper back in and prints on the other side! (really neat feature!) It saves me alot on wasted paper too!!!
The camera card slots that are on the front of this printer is a nice feature too because as soon as you put in your SD card (or memory card) all your photos come up on the screen and you touch the arrows on the touchscreen to choose which picture you want to print and edit them if you wish and then print right off your memory card! You can even zoom in (or crop) your photos and the pictures come out really nice in your final prints! The scanner works really good - no problems at all scanning and printing, the copies come out perfectly for me!
I hope my review helps you in deciding whether or not you want to try this printer and if you have doubts, do like I did and try it first! (most stores allow you X amount of time to try it out and if you are not happy you can always return it) But truth be told, I know you will be impressed with this machine just as I am! I am so glad I tried this printer out first before relying on the negative reviews.
BUT TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE... I have only had this printer for 3 days now so if I do encounter any problems, I will update my review and let you know about it but so far so good!!!! I am highly impressed with this printer!!! The ink cartridges are so very inexpensive ($10.00 for black and $15.00 for color) and this Kodak ESP-9 prints out breathtaking photos and texts!!!

Kodak ESP 7 All-in-One Printer Review

(More customer reviews)In order to keep my sanity, I disconnected this machine that was built by Kodak as an experiment on how much it takes to drive the poor purchaser insane. I'd donate it, but wouldn't sleep at night. Bought new 3/09, failed 5/09, replacement sent by Kodak 6/09.....received and disconnected 6/09. Want it?
Be careful in purchasing this. Setup was a breeze.
I thought it was a little strange when the black print would suddenly disappear. Problem solved by "cleaning printhead". Ok, must have done this several times a week.
Now, on the last cartridge install, the printer will not recognize the new cartrige. Will not print. OK, must be a bad cartridge, nope.
Chat with Kodak. After a lengthy time, it was determined that my printhead was bad. This printer is only two months old. Granted they are sending me a new one.
So, I ask whatever his name is, what the lifespan on the printheads is. His reply is 6 months. Oh goody. Printer is now going to die every couple of months needing a printhead.
Also - don't be fooled by ink savings. This sucker sucks them down.
All in all - I'm going back to my HP. A ton less aggrevating.

Update - received new print head from Kodak, and printer still will not recognize the cartridges. Kodak is now sending another printer (I hope).
Please, please think carefully before you buy this. Read the reviews. Hesitate on those 5 star ones that are written quickly. Like previously said, worked great for a while, then realized what a piece of junk it truly is.

Update to update....Well here we are in June 09. I still don't have the replacement printer from Kodak. After spending over an hour on chat and phone, they finally agree they received my piece of junk back and are sending a "new" one. Well, got the order via email and they are attempting to send a "certified refurbished". I didn't buy a refurbished printer, I bought a new piece of junk. If I'm going to get a piece of junk back at least it should be new and not a refurbished.
Customer Service also has a 1 star (or zero if I could). This is now going on two months and I still do not have a printer, as mine was received back to Kodak over 2 weeks ago without them sending the replacement until I called and spent MORE time dealing with this garbage.

(More customer reviews)I previously owned a HP500 all in one printer before choosing the Kodak Easyshare ESP3. One reason was because the ink was too expensive and the Kodak seemed like a bargain because of the cheaper ink it offered. The black cartridge will run you $[...] and the color $[...]. I was paying around $[...] prior on ink. Making the total cost for the printer and ink around $165.00. BUT WHAT THEY DON'T TELL YOU is that this printer will only print those superior pictures on Kodak paper. It has a built in scanner that scans the back of the photo paper and automatically sets the image quality. The photo paper will run you around $9.00 bucks for regular glossy (4x6 @ 100 sheets)or the premium quality runs around the same price but you only get 60 4x6 sheets. (premium is better as it is heavier paper and doesn't fold as badly as the regular ones) Forget about using cheaper or other brands of photo paper, Kodak makes it so that they come out horrible. NOT ONLY is that a way to corner the market and make up for the cheap cost of the ink, one very very bad con is that you can forget about using regular non-photo paper. For black and white documents it's acceptable but color pictures are horrible on regular paper. Again Kodak offers something called ULTIMATE PAPER that makes the color quality acceptable. I tried using three different types of paper and only the Kodak paper was acceptable and not really good crisp bright color quality. My HP 500 was way better. This printer works as if it's already built in to work on it's own accessories and nothing else. This printer does not let you control the quality at all. It's set to AUTO PAPER even though i'm using an ultra bright white non kodak brand it will not let you adjust the type of paper you are using. So if you think that this printer is a simple easier way to go...think twice about it. For me since I like to print color copies on non-photo paper way more than print pictures I pretty much hate it because i'm limited on only using the Kodak Photo paper which is more expensive than other brands. The machine IS loud and when the paper comes out is bends, curls, or folds because the ink dries slowly on the regular paper. So expect to pay alot more for the accessories that does not come with this product because it pretty much rules out trying to use cheaper other brands. A side note: I also hate the paper tray because it's all black and makes it hard to load and the flap that holds it in place is very flimsy as if it's going to break off.
UPDATE:
Since my initial post it's unanimous: THIS IS THE WORST PRINTER EVER. I'm going to take it out in the yard and destroy it with a mallot and put it on youtube. Since I last wrote this review (I've had more time to play with it) I've had to call customer service and get new printer heads...TWICE. I just got my second printer head today and because it went out it drained the newly bought ink while I was doing their diagnostics. So now they tell me they'll have to send new ink for it tomorrow even though I had told them that it looked like it had drained the ink they said it would go back to normal. The problem was that the printer head could not detect the ink levels. I've been out of a printer for two weeks because of this. Now another day. Also when you can get customer service everytime I called I got someone from another country and you couldn't understand what they were saying half the time. It got so bad I asked them if they could tell me if there is a Kodak model other than this one that no one had many complaints on, they couldn't give me one. Also to reply to the man who said he didn't understand why I would do this and do that, it's because I use regular paper indstead of photo paper to save on the space for book scrapping, like it's really any of his business what I do with my own paper anyway. BEWARE BEWARE go with lexmark or an hp.

Kodak ESP-5 EasyShare All-in-One Printer (8509408) Review

I was foaming at the mouth when Kodak came out with their first line of "All in One" 5300 series printers, but after having read many marginal reviews I decided to pass and fight it out with my Lexmark X7350 until the next Kodak generation arrived. I'm glad I waited and put shortly... Kodak has ARRIVED!
The Kodak ESP-5 prints great looking full frame 4x6 and 5x7 lab quality prints. The sheet feeder is both reliable and accurate. I print a lot of labels and reproducible alignment is important. The ESP-5 does a wonderful job in terms of reproducibility and color quality. The blank paper feed on my Lexmark is unreliable at BEST! The Kodak has been 100% in terms of mechanical reliability. Color rendition is basically "WYSIWYG" when compared to a calibrated monitor.
The scanner works reliably and produces great resolution scans with accurate tonal quality.
I am also thoroughly impressed with the Kodak Perfect Touch technology software included in the Kodak Home Center. The enhancements such as color restoration and sharpening work fantastic. Please look at the Humming bird picture that I took and enhanced with the included Kodak Home Center.
And last but not least is the cost of the refill cartridges. Thank goodness I'll no longer have to run down and buy another expensive Lexmark or HP ink cartridge. Kodak has a great product with a great marketing strategy... i.e. Sell a decent printer with reasonably priced inks, unlike Lexmark and HP who basically give you the printer for $40 and make their $$$$ on overpriced ink that they purposely engineer so that you can't refill and reuse them. (I still can't grasp Lexmark's and HP's "One Use" License concept...)
Simply put. As soon as you use up that last expensive Lexmark or HP ink cartridge either recycle your old printer or put it in the nearest dumpster and run and buy yourself the Kodak ESP-5!
Footnote 1: I downloaded the latest Kodak Home Center software and ESP-5 firmware upgrade before I printed my first page, so I can't attest to the original software version that came in the box. Seems like all manufacturers always have an upgraded version waiting on their website. This approach worked flawlessly for me, so I'd suggest you do the same.
Footnote 2: I'm running Windows XP (latest service pack) and have had no software problems.
Footnote 3: I am in no way associated with Kodak, Lexmark or HP. Just trying to provide an honest unbiased review based on my experiences.
Footnote 4: The ESP-5 came with an USB cable and bonus Print Artist software. Printing directly from the SD memory card slot works great.

(More customer reviews)Slide was askew in holder, but usable. Had to position on scanner to straighten it out a bunch of times to get it to scan squarely. The data file is a downloadable file from Kodak, and the file needed is shown on the target, as well as the web like to get the file in the documentation that comes with the target. It arrived in an envelope. No problems. My system now color profiled from scanner to printer and monitor with a Spider from datacolor. This target is for film, but can be used to profile the scanner as well. Q60 Target is for Ektachrome, and I must say now my scanned stuff looks a lot like it... scary but very good.

The engineers who developed this unit did a beautiful and daring job to come up with a new product category. What's great about the scanner as directly networkable ethernet appliance is that it fundamentally changes workflows, and makes scanning available to everyone around.
We bought this 50% because it was network attached, 50% because it has a great sheet feeder.
Kodak came through with significant software upgrade last summer that supports (somewhat awkward, but okay) file naming directly at time of scan - through the unit's touch screen. This is a huge help. The Scan Station software takes some getting used to, but is very well through out and can be configured for operation by people who really can't deal with technology. A relatively geeky person doing set up (and taking a day or two) can make life really smooth and easy for his or her non-geeky colleagues.
The difference between the 5 stars and 3 stars is simple: The CPU and RAM are not adequate and not upgradable.
As you probably understand already if you are reading this review, the scanstation a scanner wrapped around a Windows workstation, disguised as something almost as simple as fax (or a toaster for that mater. Despite the value of the integration of the scanner into an applicance (the success in "hiding" the technology behind a simple user story) it is impossible to get away from the fact that the CPU power really does matter and the Scan Station 100's processor isn't good enough .
We are talking about a Celeron D (2.4 GHz) - something that would have been in a Walmart $500 home office computer from 2003, 2004. Weak when it was new years ago, an 1/100th the speed it could be. RAM upgradableness would also be very great (2GB is what we would do.
Although it's not the only technical option - the key to this scanner is that it make it easy for a whole of office of people who don't really understand what a "searchable pdf" document is to product them anyway.
But OCR and creating a searchable PDF take time. The result is that if you have more than 50 pages (25 sheets) you're in trouble. And you must wait for the OCR to complete before adding more paper.
Even great equipment can mean change - and change means resistance. We can't put every manager under a command to scan or walk the plank - so going paperless requires cheerleading and internal marketing. It is the "appliance" nature of the Scan Station 100 that's great. It would be *much* *much* easier to sell coworkers taking the trouble to scan documents if the Scan Station 100 did not have an obviously obsolete and we could spend some extra money on extra RAM.
The basic engineering and and concept is beautiful. Did I mention that the feeder is great? (Basically the feeder doesn't jam, and can take checks, previously stapled 20 page contracts (staples removed), brochures, most things that look at all reasonable to get through a feeder. Put them in the feeder and it just scans them right in. Great... but then you wait.
The scan station is priced as a luxury experience, and it almost delivers-- if it weren't for all those pesky pixels and processing time. Despite what the Kodak engineers may have hoped, we are in a rush, and the processing unit in the scanner is what keeps our users from wanting to hug it in gratitude.
- Almost in love (did I mention it that it could be faster?)
*PS: If we have something huge we scan .tiff images directly to the file server and then do the OCR and Acrobat conversion on a separate system. not something our typical user can really deal with, however. And it's techy enough to defeat the concept of a democratic, simple, accessible "appliance" style piece of hardware (which is what you are paying for).

Kodak Scanmate i1120 Scanner (8456923) Review

(More customer reviews)I did have to actually open the manual and read a few directions to install. All that I needed to do was restart my computer after software install which should have been obvious to me. Other than that this thing is awesome. Our last scanner (Canoscan) took up to if not over forty minutes for me to scan a particular multi-page document. I would have to save multiple images and then print them to a pdf with software we purchased seperatly. Now it takes me 40 SECONDS and poof I'm done! And I dont have to waste time mapping the location of where I want it saved everytime, you can alter the settings to go to the same folder everytime. And its very compact so it fits perfectly on the corner of my desk.

(More customer reviews)I've always purchased cheap printers and this is definitely one of the better budget printers I've used. The print quality is excellent and surprisingly fast. If you use photo paper, the quality is on par with Wal-greens for having digital photos printed.
It's also quite easy to use. It took me about 5 minutes to set it up/install all software. The scan/copy controls on top of the printer are really easy to figure out. The SD/HC, MS, MMC card slot is also a great feature. You can just pop in your camera or cell phone's memory card and print without a computer. This feature works great.
The primary reason why I bought this printer was it has some of the cheapest ink on the market. $10 for black ink and $15 for color ink!
The only con is that the scan quality is not that great. I tried scanning in photos and there are faint white lines in the photo file and it is definitely more grainy than the original photo. I would not recommend this printer if you're planning to use it primarily for the scanning photo feature. However I will say that I have never had/used a personal scanner with really good photo scanning capabilities (so this is about average).
In summary, I bought this printer at Wal-mart for $99 and I have no complaints for the price although better photo scanning would have made the printer 5-star worthy.

(More customer reviews)I liked this printer quite a bit. Ink is inexpensive- main reason we got it. However, after scanning something from it only once, which worked fine, the software is no longer opening and giving me errors. I have tried everything- uninstall, reinstall, firmware updates, everything they suggested to do on their website, etc. I now have a large black multifunction printer that only has one function- it does still print, but I cannot scan or use the software. When I emailed Kodak, they emailed back that because this printer was so successful, they were backlogged on support questions. Hmmmm. That does not sound good. Anyway. You may want to try it and hopefully have better luck than us.
I have wasted several hours on this thing. Will update this if I figure it out, but for now, I cannot give this a good review. It is possible that Windoze is the culprit or a combination of them both.
UPDATE- I should have remembered to update this earlier. I was able to use Adobe to get the scanner function to work. I don't hate this printer, but I don't love it either. I definitely don't want to have to spend hours trying to get equipment to work. I mean it's a printer- I just want to turn it on and use it. The problem was certainly in Kodak's software and should have been figured out by them.

(More customer reviews)Easy set up. I use Windows 7 and it set up itself. Didn't need the disk that came with it. It went to the Kodak site and downloaded the software and drivers all automatically. I just followed the easy prompts and away it went. I printed out a couple of pictures and they were better that the photo labs. Very very high quality prints. Smooth and quiet operation. I was awed over the quality of the pictures and ease of use of the software. It puts an icon on your desktop for you. If you are looking for a superior quality printer at a low cost, this is the one. The ink refills are cheap. Best Buy has refills for $26 and that includes both the black and color in a set. Cant wait to take more pictures so I can print them out.

(More customer reviews)In my home network I have 3 pc's (wired) and 2 laptops (wireless) all connected by a Linksys router. Two of the pc's are for my kids who print out stuff for school and work. Before I bought this printer I had an older HP inkjet connected to my primary desktop (mine). Whenever someone needed to print anything my computer had to be turned on first. Rather annoying.
Not anymore! This Kodak printer so far has been fantastic. The full size instruction manual (no cheap photocopied sheet of paper) explained the whole process from opening the box to connecting it to your network wirelessly. With step by step illustrations that were easy to follow. Within minutes it was up and running perfectly having automatically detected my network SSID and connecting when I typed in my security passphrase on its built in keypad.
What I like:
Easy installation. Nice print results. I haven't printed any photos yet so I don't know how they look. Included in the box are 3 sample sheets of 4x6 photo paper so I'll have to try it. It's totally wireless, so I placed in in an armoire centrally located in my home so it is accessible to everyone. The unit can be left on and after a selectable period of inactivity it powers down in energy saving mode. You don't need to turn it back on at all or wake it up. It automatically connects and prints when when a request is sent. Very nice feature. Also, it uses a separate printhead independent of the ink cartridges. I guess this way it ends up cheaper to buy ink because the printhead is not part of the cartridge itself. It comes with a nice comprehensive software package which completed the installation process flawlessly.
What I didn't like: It is a tad loud but nothing I can't deal with. When inputing a passphrase via the keypad it defaults to uppercase. After a few minutes of trying unsuccesfully at first to connect to my network I realized that I needed to switch to lowercase. A press of a button switched me to lowercase and bingo! passphrase accepted. When you first open the box it appears that part of the AC adapter is missing. It is actually packed underneath the printer where you can't see it.
All in all I'm very pleased with this printer and highly recommend it. Ink cartridges seem to be a lot cheaper that most others too.
Time will tell but I'm very satisifed so far.

Kodak Scanmate I1120 Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)Let me start by saying I've used numerous scanners at my office (which is going paperless) and this is one of the best quality scanners I've used.
I've used Xerox scanners, Cannon scanners, and other "better model" Kodak scanners. For the price, this model can't be beat. Plus, this model can scan both sides (ie "duplex") if you want it to. It rarely jams and only does so when the papers are "roughed up" (ie creases and the corners are folded over each other).
For $400, this model is just as good as the Kodak scanmates that cost twice that amount. This is definetely a top buy and a no-brainer if you're looking for a scanner to turn your office paperless.
