Pacific Image Electronics PF3650U Scanner, Primefilm 35MM Review

This is a great machine, and I'd recommend it to anyone who has a need to scan a relatively small number of slides and negatives. I'd have rated it five stars save for a single problem with the directions.
The one problem that I have with this product is the installation directions. They did not work for me when I followed them to the letter on my Win98SE machine. While all indications were "GO", neither one of my twain-complaint software programs - Paint Shop Pro 7 and the Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 included in the box with the scanner - would recognize the existence of the Pacific Image 3650u scanner, though both programs recognized my other two scanners. Frustration led me to request a refund!
But, I made one last try, and inadvertently, contrary to the directions, had the 3650u powered up during installation of the Cyber-X update I downloaded from Pacific Image's website. That did the trick! After a reboot all of the software recognized the 3650u scanner. After that, it was smooth sailing, exactly as advertised.

Pana-Vue Pana-Scan 35mm Negative and Slide Scanner Review

Pana-Vue Pana-Scan 35mm Negative and Slide Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this to scan over 2,000 slides, some over 40 years old. Software installation is not intuitive, but fairly easy. Slide holder is cumbersome but once you figure out how to load the slides is not too bad (open the slide tray and load slides upside down in the TOP tray). You can only scan/transfer three slides per tray. The quality is not digital because the source (slides) are not digital. However, slides deteriorate over time and I wanted to save them before it's too late. Scanned picture quality is OK but don't expect digital HD results! So far I've scanned over 1,000 slides. It's time-consuming. Tried scanning color negatives but haven't gotten that feature to work yet - maybe I'll look at the PDF instructions (last resort of course!) For the money it's OK. When I scan in all my slides I'll have an obsolete piece of equipment.
Update: Scanning negatives works. Once you transfer them to a file, use a photo editor and click on "Negative" which turns the negative image into a positive image (nowhere in the directions could I find this - I just experimented). Results are sharper than scanning slides.

Microtek ScanMaker 1000XL PRO - flatbed scanner ( 1108-03-770002 ) Review

Microtek ScanMaker 1000XL PRO - flatbed scanner ( 1108-03-770002 )
Average Reviews:

I purchased a 1000XL pro about a year and a half ago. Recently it no longer communicated with any computer either through the USB2 port of the firewire. When I contacted Microtek they advised me that they had closed their repair facility and all they would do was offer me a replacement for $ 1000 with a 90 day warranty. The more I peruse the net, the more I see a litany of similar complaints. This company either needs to be taken over by a more reputable firm or closed down. I am amazed they are still in business.

HP Photosmart C5180 All-in-One Printer, Scanner, Copier (#Q8220A) Review

HP Photosmart C5180 All-in-One Printer, Scanner, Copier (#Q8220A)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The C5180 is like most all-in-ones -- it saves a lot of desk space, but can't do everything equally well. It's best used as a home copier and printer. As a scanner, it's only average.
Using HP's new inexpensive 6 color "02" ink, it produces gorgeous photo prints when you use photo inkjet paper. Text on plain paper is a little soft and not as black as I'd like. You really need to use HP's new Advanced everyday paper and photo paper products to get good results.
The C5180 also installs a great suite of software for Mac OS X. It's the most Mac-like printer and scanner software I've used (I've also used Canon and Epson printers/scanners).
The only bad thing about this unit relates to the scanner. The noisy scanner produces so-so results, with a lot of noise at higher resolutions. The scanner doesn't have any descreening functions, so any magazine scans look crummy. The auto color correct is really aggresive and usually introduces more color problems than it solves. Unfortunately, you can't scan with Mac OS X's Image Capture - you have to use HPs scanner softare. It does have a neat feature than you can scan directly to a memory card, so no computer is needed. The included OCR software is mostly worthless. I couldn't get it translate any white text on a black background or normal type at small point sizes.
So in a nutshell:
PROS
-Inexpensive, individual ink cartridges
-Great photo prints with HP photo paper
-LCD makes printing directly from memory card very easy
-Ability to scan directly to memory card
-Compact size
-Great Mac-like software
-Terrific home copier
CONS
-So-so scan quality
-Scanner software missing features
-Noisy scanner mechanism
-Crummy OCR software

Penpower WorldCardColor Portable Color Business Card Scanner for Mac and PC Review

Penpower WorldCardColor Portable Color Business Card Scanner for Mac and PC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is such a convenience that this unit is compatible with Mac OS & Windows. However it only support Intel-based Mac. Luckily, I am using Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Very simple and scan directly to Mac address book. Fast scanning speed and portability due to its palm size, make it easy to travel with. It recognizes 20 languages, very useful for users like me who receive different language business cards all the time, from all over the places. Highly recommend to all Mac users. (and Win users as well)
