Umax Astra 3450 Scanner Review

Umax Astra 3450 Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are looking for great quality transparency scans using this sleek flatbed, you will be hugely disappointed. All the scans that I did for my slides were lacking in contrast, and lost significant amount of colour depth. More over, because of the lack of high optical resolution (I scanned at 1200 - the max optical resolution offerred by this scanner) the images even look slightly unfocussed !
The preview and scan times are also too long. An average preview takes 3 minutes per slide (forget the 7 secs preview promised on the brochure - I never realised seven second even while scanning a colour photo at 300 res), and an average scan between 6-9 minutes.
Scanned colour photo images came out slightly better - but the cost - equivalent images can also be had out of scanners about half the cost of this one !
The scanner is well packaged with all the software I needed, the hardware did not give me any trouble while installing, the scanning software (vistascan) works well without crashing my PC.
My reco - look for a better product. And if you really want good transparency scans - I guess it is better to go in for a dedicated transparency scanner

I just ordered this scanner a few days ago and it arrived very quickly, it was so simple to install a 5 year old could do it, just put in the software, push install, and plug 1 cord into the back of your comp and the other into a wall socket and you are ready to go. The software that came with it is great, and it scans under 10 seconds on 200 dpi, It has the most beautiful quality scans i have ever seen in both grayscale, and color. It's just amazing! I love the preview feature! it has a real-time preview feature where you can change, contrast, lighting, etc and see it happen while you are doing it, so you know exactly what it looks like when you scan it. I encourage everyone who needs a scanner or just wants one to get this one! it's the best!

Umax Astra 2000U Flatbed USB Scanner (PC/Mac)
Average Reviews:

I have tried repeatedly to get the 2000u to work to no avail. More calls to Customer Support than I can afford. After asking for a manager I was told my problems were common, if I wanted them to check out the scanner (since phone support could not figure it out) I had to send back the scanner at my expense and they would determine whether or not to repair, refurbish or replace the scanner. The final gotcha was that I had tried for over three months to solve the problems by phone and was now out of warranty and they refused to even look at it if I did send it back. Buy ANYthing else.

Epson Perfection 1640SU Photo Scanner Review

Epson Perfection 1640SU Photo Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Epson Perfection Photo 1640SU is an excellent scanner. Although a bit more pricey than other home scanners, its resolution is unrivaled for the price. I like the one-button scanning it provides. The setup and software are easy. The automatic scanning modes are wonderful and do a great job, however, I like scanning from the TWAIN software from Photoshop because of the customizability it provides. The photo attachment was really surprising to me in the resolution that it provides. I have scanned 35 mm negatives and enlarged them to 5 x 7 inch prints; these prints look like photographs. I even did an 8x10 inch photo enlargement. The photo looks great on the monitor, however, it took forever to do any manipulations. This was not the fault of the scanner, but rather due to the large size of the file (which was around 700 Mbytes). It ended up crashing my computer. I will stick to 5x7 inch prints or use lower resolution scanning in the future.
I especially like the on-off switch on the front of the scanner; my previous scanner did not have this item. I have scanned many photographs now and have acheived magnificent results. This is a scanner that can do routine jobs but also specialized business-quality scanning. Thank you Epson!

Museums and other resource centers. This little scanner fits into my

Its design allows you to place it on top of the thing to be copied and
is much safer on old and rare documents. HP no longer makes them-Dumb move!

Microtek ScanMaker i320 High-Resolution Flatbed Scanner Review

Microtek ScanMaker i320 High-Resolution Flatbed Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a long-time user of Microtek scanners, and have generally found that even their low end products are reliable and deliver great results.
The i320 installed and worked without a hitch when attached to a new Athlon-based PC running Windows XP Home Edition, and I immediately started testing it using a high quality 8x10 photograph. One issue I encountered right off is that the quality of scans was inferior to that of my previous scanner, a Microtek 3600. After working with the i320 for a while, I discovered what I think is the reason. This model, like most current scanners, has a very high hardware resolution - 3200dpi. My older scanner has a hardware resolution of 600dpi. One frequently overlooked fact about this increased resolution is that the much smaller size of today's sensors makes them a lot more vulnerable to optical noise, which degrades image quality. (And by the way, that higher resolution is of no value when scanning photographs, since most photo detail can be resolved at 300dpi.)
I found that I was able to get the scanner to behave more like a 600dpi model by using the Descreen option in the ScanWizard software. (Try setting it between 100 and 200lpi). This cleaned up the noise dramatically, and I was happy.
What I was not so happy about is the Digital ICE feature. This is a proven technology that has been employed in high end film scanners with great success. I don't know how successfully it's been used in flatbed scanners, but my tests with the i320 were not impressive. I tried numerous variations of scan resolution and ICE settings on some old photos, both color and B&W. In no case did the ICE function ever clean up even one speck of dust or debris on any of my photos. It did help a bit in correcting physical damage such as wrinkles or tears, but I frankly have very few photos in such bad condition.
Aside from the extra cost in dollars that the ICE function adds to the scanner, it also costs a lot in time. Scans with ICE enabled are sloooooow! You'll have to wait several minutes while the scanner does nothing at all except display a message about warming up. This happens with each and every scan - how warm does it need to be? Unless you have a shoebox full of mangled photos, I can't see this implementation of Digital ICE being worthwhile.
Another minor disappointment was the ColoRescue feature. This is supposed to restore proper colors to faded photos, but in my tests it usually produced silly, garish results. I found it preferable to scan without it and fix the colors in Photoshop.
Bottom line - this is a perfectly fine scanner. However, it probably won't produce great results with the default settings. You'll have to explore the intricacies of the ScanWizard software (which, by the way, is one of the best scanner control programs out there and is the main reason why I continue to buy Microtek stuff). And it won't clean up dust and debris on photos. Consider saving a few bucks by getting the Microtek 6000 without Digital ICE, or instead spend more on one of the higher end models where the ICE function might really work!

There is no Tech Support for the 5800/5820 scanners. They are the most worthless pieces of junk ever to be assembled. I would not buy this crap if it was being sold for a dollar. Canon CanoScan 3000F Scanner Review

Canon CanoScan 3000F Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When scanning photos this scanner is everything I require.
The scanning software is easy to use with a good range of options.
However, when it comes to scanning slides it is most disappointing as they always come out dark.
To compensate I try tweaking the brightness and contrast settings in the software but the colors in the dark areas are never true. You can play around with the image in a photo-editing program but they are always disappointing and never get near the quality of color and clarity that you get when projected onto a screen.
If you want a scanner that scans slides then go for something else, and if all you need to scan is photos and documents then you don't need this scanner.
Beware of reviews that appear to parrot the sales blurb.

Canon CanoScan 4200F Flatbed Scanner Review

Canon CanoScan 4200F Flatbed Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I simply love the Canon CanoScan 4200F flat scanner for prints and films. It's fast (both in scanning and transfering to the PC), quiet, and has superb scan quality, esp. on 35mm negatives. (I haven't tried scanning 35mm slide films.)
Setting the 4200F up is pretty much a breeze, assuming you have Windows XP. (Windows 98 users will need to follow the instructions very carefully.) You first install the software -- the scanner driver and the scan toolbar (called "toolbox") are the only programs necessary for using the scanner; the other applications (photo editing, OCR and Adobe Acrobat) are optional. After restarting your machine (so the scanner driver loads and runs as a service), just connect the USB 2.0 hi-speed cable, and you are set to go.
Using the scanner is also quite simple. You can scan in three ways: directly from your photo organizing or editing program (assuming it supports the universal TWAIN interface, which most imaging programs worth their pennies do); using the Canon Scan Toolbox; or pressing one of the four buttons on the scanner itself, which calls up the toolbox and automatically initiates a scan.
The four buttons are:
- Copy. Your PC must be connected to a powered-on printer for this to work. When you press copy, the Canon scans and sends the file directly to your printer.
- Scan. This is the button for scanning. When you press it, the Canon scans and sends the scanned image to your designated photo editing program, which you specify once via the toolbox. (This button corresponds to the "Scan 1" icon on the toolbox.)
- PDF. This turns the scanned image into a PDF file.
- E-mail. This button scans and then calls up Outlook Express or Outlook with the image embedded as a JPEG attachment.
The toolbox (toolbar) has more options for scanning. All are pretty straightforward. Each option can be configured in detail, or you can specify that all the settings be done in the driver itself. (The toolbox is simply an interface to the driver.) If you configure things in the driver, you'll even be able to adjust how the scanned image should look, in terms of color, contrast, sharpness, etc., etc. The options are endless, but in the beginning, using the toolbox makes scanning a breeze and less intimidating.
One thing cool about the Canon is how it makes it easy to understand what resolution you should scan in. First, the 4200F is capable of 3200x6400 dpi (dots per inch). The 3200 dpi is its true optical resolution; that's how much fine details it can detect. The second number, 6400 dpi, refers to its "stepping" levels, which basically means the sensor can sample each inch 6400 times, but only detects up to 3200 dots. When you scan, the Canon asks you what *output* resolution and size you want, and then calculates the necessary input resolution for you. Say you are scanning a 4x6" photo but want to be able to print it 4 times as large (or twice the width and length, i.e., 8x12") and print at 300 dpi. The Canon will then automatically set the correct scan resolution of 600 dpi -- which is twice as much as printing 4x6 at 300 dpi. So you'll get a 2400x3600 file in pixels, which can then be printed at 8x12" at 300 dpi (2400/8=3600/12=300dpi). This concept of specifying output resolution rather than worrying about input resolution works esp. well for scanning negatives. Say you are scanning a 35mm negative. It'd be a pain to figure out which scanning resolution is best. But if you know you'd eventually want to print a 4x6" photo in 200 dpi, just tell the driver so, and the driver will do all the work for you and scan properly.
Another feature I love is multi-scan, which lets you scan in several pictures at once and the driver automatically separates them. Here's how I use my 4200F:
I set up the scan button so it's linked to Adobe Photoshop Elements 3's organizer. (You can link the button to any TWAIN-compatible program.) When I press the button, the scanner automatically scans multiple pictures I place on the glass, and separates them (and straightens them if necessary) into individual pictures. I have a checkbox called "confirmation of EXIF" checked, which allows me an opportunity to scan in more pictures before sending them all at once to Photoshop Elements 3. This really saves me a lot of time, without having to switch between the scanner driver and Photoshop Elements after each scan. Finally, when I'm done with scanning all the photos, I click the Forward button, and the driver automatically launches Adobe Photoshop Elements (if it's not already open) or switches to it, and sends over the newly scanned pictures. This process works equally well for photo prints and negatives. It sounds longer than it actually is. As with any scanning, it's replacing the photos on the glass or in the negative holder that is the most time-consuming part.
Compared to my previous scanners and even many more expensive scannesr on the market today, the CanoScan 4200F is lightyears ahead in scan quality, speed and quietness. The driver software has both a "simple mode" for easy scanning and an "advanced mode" for more fine-tuned scanning. The driver has been totally stable. I simply love this scanner. Finally, I will be able to scan in all my old photos.
The only downside I can think of is the lack of a printed user's manual. The 4200F comes with a quick-start guide that covers installing the software and doing a test scan. The HTML user's guide has lots of details, but because it's not PDF, it's almost impossible to print out.

I've found our Visoneer 3100 flatbed scanner to be easy to use and a very welcome edition to our home office. If you are in the market for a basic scanner to keep friends and family updated with photos of any kind, this is a truly wonderful product! It is a snap to use, and it barely takes up much memory space on the hard drive! It is quite reasonably priced, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a scanner to do basic functions! I can even make homemade holiday cards with it! It is great!

If you're like most people, after buying a computer you can't afford to spend much money on peripherals. The Visioneer PaperPort 3100B flatbed scanner provides an inexpensive method of scanning documents for home use that just might suit your needs. The flatbed size of 8.5 by 11.69 inches will accommodate most documents, while the 300 x 600 dpi hardware resolution can be enhanced up to 2,400 x 2,400 dpi. The 30-bit color provides more than 1 billion colors and 1,024 shades of gray, while the PaperPort software makes scanning, copying, faxing, and printing a cinch. Visioneer OCR software makes editing scanned text possible, and PictureWorks PhotoEnhancer helps you spruce up the image quality of your scans by changing lighting, resizing and cropping images, taking out red-eye, and more. Also included in the software bundle are AOL Publisher and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0. Compatible with PC only, the PaperPort 3100B comes backed with a one-year limited warranty.
