Uniden TRU5865 5.8 GHz Cordless Phone with Caller ID Review

Uniden TRU5865 5.8 GHz Cordless Phone with Caller ID
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
5.8GHz is a *requirement* if you use WiFi (802.11a/b/g) in your house or if you have other wireless technologies that typically get garbled when the 900MHz or 2.4GHz phones are used. I have had absolutely NO reception troubles in my 3300 sqft house and the clarity is superb.
The phone's looks are top-notch. Black and silver is a very slick look for a modern household. Might look a little funny if you're style is country or traditional.
Caller ID works well and the 2-line display is very helpful. Voicemail indicator is also nice.
The biggest surprise feature for me was the speakerphone in the handset! I've used this several times (it's great when you're on hold somewhere or when you need several people to talk at once) and love it!
I was happy with the menu navigation, although I thought they could have offered more features (like... perhaps the ability to control the volume of that LOUD, annoying beeping every time you press a button). The menu seemed sparse to me.
My biggest two gripes with this phone are not petty and not trivial at all. They are showstoppers, in my opinion.
(1) The phone will NOT work well in states that require 10-digit dialing and a +1 in order to dial in-state. In Michigan, for example, I have to dial 1-248-555-1212 to call my neighbor (ok, so that's information, I digress).
Putting My Neighbor in the phone book as 248-555-1212 results in:
- The inbound works fine (caller ID shows up, custom rings sound if set)
- BUT you cannot dial using the phone book or caller ID redial. This is because both will try to dial 248-555-1212, which will not work! Our phone system requires 1-248-555-1212 to be dialed. There is NO setting for this on the phone.
If you think you can be sneaky (like I did) and set the phone book entry to be 1-248-555-1212, then:
- You can call with the phone book, BUT
- Inbound services don't work (no custom rings) and you STILL can't redial them from the caller ID.
In effect, if you live in a state that has converted to full 10-digit dialing and a 1 is required to dial 10 digits, don't bother with this phone. It's slick, but it's unforgiveable that the engineers missed that one considering the first phone I bought myself in 1985 had this capability. Yay, progress!

Some of us need much more from our phones than just a little redial button. Sometimes a flash feature simply isn't enough. For users who demand extensive features, Uniden's TRU5865 delivers. Functioning at a quiet, nearly interference-free 5.8 GHz, the phone uses digital transmission for exceptional range and minimal static. The three-line LCD handset display works in conjunction with caller ID services, storing 100 names and numbers in addition to the speed-dial presets.
The dual speakerphones (both on handset and base) let you talk hands-free or get the whole family in on the conversation. And yes, the phone does feature the basics, like flash, pause, hold, and redial with memory storage of the last three numbers dialed. In addition, you can dial either from the handset or from the base. The phone is expandable to accommodate additional handsets. An NiMH battery and 90-day warranty are included.

Uniden Bearcat PC78 Elite 40-Channel CB Radio Review

Uniden Bearcat PC78 Elite 40-Channel CB Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used CB'S for over twenty years, This one is the best I have used in that time. I might add that for me it is the "fanciest" one I have ever bought. I do find the weather channel to be useful as I commute across the country. The ergonomic mike is a pleasure to use, I expect to see copycats on the market soon. You could spend a lot more for a CB and not get any better performance.

Uniden DSC-BK VHF Waterproof Marine Radio (Black) Review

Uniden DSC-BK VHF Waterproof Marine Radio (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked up this radio "rebranded" by a marine retailer.
I've found it works very well. I was also able to connect a handheld GPS to it with very little effort.
The power selection feature is nice for not blowing away anyone near you. The DSC feature is nice for getting the location of family members in others boats.
I really like the one touch "distress" feature, although I've never used it. When connected to a GPS, it will send your location to the Coast Guard. Good for me since my wife doesn't speak english.
I have nothing negative to report other than the mic cannot be removed. However, there is a remote mic available separately.
I would like to include instructions for connecting a serial connector to the included accesory cable (for the GPS) but amazon doesn't allow this. Maybe you can "search" for it.

Uniden Bearcat PC68 Elite 40-Channel CB Radio Review

Uniden Bearcat PC68 Elite 40-Channel CB Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own six CB radios of which this Bearcat is the only one that works in my pickup with the engine running - zero engine noise! Superb range even with my magnet mount antenna. I selected this one after reviewing the receiver sensitivity specifications and since I live in the California gold country foothills where cell phone service is marginal at best, the receiver sensitivity is very important.

Uniden PC78LTW 40-Channel CB Radio Review

Uniden PC78LTW 40-Channel CB Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently bought one of these radios for my semi tractor. I immediately fell in love with the backlit controls. Years ago, I owned the Cobra version of this radio, but I didn't like it as much as this one. The controls are laid out very logically and have a nice feel. The Delta tune has a center detent for "eyes free" operation as you drive. The weather channels are a welcome addition to a long drive, keeping you informed of changing and/or severe weather ahead. The only things I didn't care that much for are the Dynamic Squelch feature and the front mic connector. DSC doesn't seem to work too well, but I drive with the squelch off (to hear distant signals), so this doesn't detract from an otherwise great radio. Having owned various Cobras, Galaxies, and other "big" radios, I can honestly say I like the Uniden PC78LTW the best.

Maycom AR-108AE Air Band & Weather Channel Scanner Review

Maycom AR-108AE Air Band and Weather Channel Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Maycom AR-108 AE scanner. This is a wonderful little scanner. I have used this for about a week and would highly recommend to people like myself who have a hard time programming scanners. The nice thing about this scanner is you dont have to program it at all. You can just turn it on and press SC and it will continue to scan all the airband. I live 40 miles from the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport and The scanner stays busy all the time. The batterys are also going to last a long time. The instructions for the Radio are not great. You can still find all the Info you need. I wont even try to use the programming as its not needed and very complicated to use. I am very happy with the scanner. It is even easy to use for someone who is almost 66 years old. I have several other scanners but none work as great as this one. I am planning a trip to the airport soon. I love this little scanner.

This CB is a fantastic deal for the money. My problem is in my vehicle (Jeep) it is very difficult to hear on the highway. I use mine mostly offroad so it is perfect for me. At this cost i am not worried about someone ripping it off ...rather them take it then rip my top. I would definitely get it again.

Uniden PRO510XL 40-Channel CB Radio Review

Uniden PRO510XL 40-Channel CB Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am partial to Uniden anyway, however this CB is great for a first time user or as a back up to a more expensive unit. I have been using CB for about 10 years and I always make sure I have a Uniden 510 available for a back up, or use it in a second car. It has superior range when used with a good antenna and the received audio is decent. I would suggest using an external speaker unless you have a super quiet vehicle. The anl switch cuts through static really well to improve reception, although it sometimes dulls out the audio of the person you are trying to hear. You can use it with a cigarette lighter plug with an adapter from radio shack for a few dollars. They will even show you how to hook it up. It all boils down to being a great CB at a great price. Remember a simple rule of thumb... An inexpensive CB on a good antenna will perform just as well as a high-end CB on a cheap antenna. Don't forget to tune your antenna and have fun!

Remanufactured RadioShack PRO-163 1000-Channel Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner Review

Remanufactured RadioShack PRO-163 1000-Channel Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have enjoyed owning (and using) Radio Shack scanners since 1975 (my first was a Realistic PRO-4 crystal-controlled hand-held receiver); it's amazing to see how far they have come.
I downloaded ARC300 software and, with the USB programming cable from Radio Shack (virtually identical to the one from GRE); I had my PRO-163 programmed and up and running in just a few minutes' time, with alpha tags on the individual frequencies. What a luxury!
The audio is crisp and clear, and everything functions just as advertised. This is a refurbished unit, but it came complete with everything the factory packs with new units, and it looked brand new.
I bought this scanner as an upgrade over my PRO-433; I really wanted alpha tagging and I have become spoiled with the Signal Stalker feature already .
If you want a solid, high-performance, non-digital trunk-tracking scanner, I recommend the PRO-163 wholeheartedly.

Uniden BCT15 BearTracker Mobile Tracking Scanner with GPS Support (Black)

I've owned scanners for the last 30 years. This is by far the best one I've ever had. It's incredibly powerful. I purchased it for my home as I've got a handheld BCT-245 in my truck. It's reception is so much better than the BCT-245 I'm going to buy another one of these for my truck.
Don't try to manually program it. Get some software off the internet (I use ARC, which interfaces with an online site) and in just a few minutes you're all programmed and ready to go!

Uniden Sc-230 Handheld Racing Scanner Deluxe Package Review

Uniden Sc-230 Handheld Racing Scanner Deluxe Package
Average Reviews:

This scanner is just the ticket for those who like to keep up with thier drivers communication during a race. It's easy to program and you can easily add or lock out those drivers you no longer want to keep listening to. It is a little limited to the number of frequencies you program in. So if you follow the trucks, Nation Wide and Cup series you'll have to do some reprograming between races. Overall though I think this is well worth the money I spent.

Really helps me hear the CHP which operates on 39MHz. I'm not clear why it is double jointed, seems to me just one would be needed. In any event, the joints are very tight, which is a good attribute for an antenna of this length. I'll probably order another one, as I have half a dozen scanners that can benefit from it.

Bearcat BC296D Digital Scanner Handheld Review

Bearcat BC296D Digital Scanner Handheld
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was a little hesitant to spend so much money on a digital scanner. Now that I have the scanner and have been using it for a couple of weeks I must say it is worth every dollar spent on it. The sound output is very clear and loud. The scanner itself is very solid. It is a bit cumbersome to program manually and the product manual is very poor but I relied upon the forum and frequency database at www.radioraference.com The users in the forum was very helpful and I had the scanner up and running in two evenings. The Uniden software that comes with the scanner is very limited and I would suggest that you purchase the ARC250 basic software. This scanner is a must buy for any die hard scanner hobbyist.

Uniden BCD396T TrunkTracker IV APCO Digital Handheld Scanner with 6000 Dynamic Channels Review

Uniden BCD396T TrunkTracker IV APCO Digital Handheld Scanner with 6000 Dynamic Channels
Average Reviews:

Whether you buy this as a toy or a tool, this is not a device that is going to spring out of its box ready to use. I consider myself fairly experienced in electronics and radio-related stuff and it took me several obsessive evenings of tinkering with the settings, reading and re-reading the manual, and searching through a half dozen online forums and reference sites dedicated to just this scanner model to get things set up properly.
Most folks who own this scanner are happy to share the files they have created of their own metropolitan areas (I found and downloaded complete Baltimore County files in a few minutes after subscribing BCD396T Yahoo Group) and with the included data cable every feature of the scanner can be controlled and modified from the computer screen.
Now that the unit is completely set up, it works exactly the way I want it to. This is a great portable scanner if you have digital trunking systems in your area, or anticipate your local systems going digital in the next few years. The back-light works great and lights up the buttons along with the display, which makes the scanner as easy to use in the dark as in full daylight.
The included antenna is a wide-band scanner antenna, so expect to have to purchase a band-specific antenna for the unit if you're mostly concerned with listening to 700 or 800 MHz trunking bands in your area and want the best possible performance on those bands.
If you have no digital systems in your area, you may want to check out some of the less expensive alternatives without digital capability such as the UNIDEN BC-246T Compact Hand Held Scanner.

Uniden USB-1 Scanner Radio PC Interface Cable Review

Uniden USB-1 Scanner Radio PC Interface Cable
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Uniden USB-1 programming cable to complement my Uniden BCD-396XT digital trunktracker scanner. It did not come with a driver, so I searched the 'net for an appropriate driver, loaded it, and after that, and also after installing appropriate software (I chose Freescan), I installed it without any problems whatsoever (Freescan even auto-searches for an open COM port).
Does it work? Yes indeed; the cable itself is sturdy, well engineered, and seems to be immune to inferference from the computer. With this cable hooked in to my scanner, I can not only program it whenever I want, but can also control the scanner through it! What an incredible luxury to do that, in a stationary or mobile environment (autologging when traveling is an incredible tool).
Sure, you can cobble together your own cable from bits and pieces, but I think this cable was money well spent; YMMV of course .
