Canon MF5750 ImageCLASS Multifunction Laser Printer, Copier, Fax, Scanner Review

I bought the MF5750 because of the features, price, and my excellent experience with other Cannon products in the past (2 camcorders, a G2 camera, and an F-80 multifunction inkjet that has given flawless service in my home office with very active use). The MF5750 is ok overall, except since I got it the print has been blurry and smudged at the top of about half the pages I print. You can read the pages, but the print quality is not good enough for professional correspondence. I called Cannon customer service within a few weeks of purchase looking for help. They offered to replace the unit with a refurbrished model (!!) or direct me to a repair facility (!!). I suppose every once in a while Cannon might make a defective product - but when it doesn't work correctly right out of the box - I don't expect a refurbrished unit in return, or to wait for repairs. Instead, I am sending it back to the vendor to exchange for a new unit - hopefully I'll have better luck with this one.
Other than the print quality, the unit seems pretty good - the print speed is fast. The multifunction feed for envelopes etc. is a bit finnicky but after you get the hang of it, it works ok. Also, Cannon advises that the printer cable must be under 2 meters, and some USB hubs don't work. The 15' USB active cable/hub I tried worked once or twice but after that - no go.
I have not tried other multi-function lasers - so I really don't have anything to it compare to.
UPDATE:
I got a new MF5750 replacing the defective unit mentioned in my previous review, and wanted to provide this update after one week of use (about 100 pages printed, a couple copies - no faxing).
The print quality problems on the previous unit are solved - I would say print quality is 100% fine for professional correspondence. I have not done much grayscale printing. There is slight curling of the paper even using the strait-thru paper path. The printing is quite fast - nice for larger documents.
I made a few copies and they are very good. If you look VERY carefully you can see the text is slightly lighter than the original without any adjustments on the MF 5750.
As with the previous unit, the alternate paper feed is a little tricky - you need to get the feeder to grab the paper and then print from the PC. If it doesn't grab correctly the paper doesn't feed, and the printer jam alarm goes off even though there is no paper jam. You can open the panels/trays but it doesn't clear the alarm. You need to unplug the machine (yes, that is how the manual instructs you to turn off the alarm). I guess I will either get the hang of it or maybe it will just be easier to use the normal paper tray.
On the USB cable - I tried another USB 2.0 extension/hub without any luck. To locate this where I want (about 15 feet from the PC) I may resort to hooking this up to a network because the printer comes with a USB cable about only 4' long and they say 2 meters is the longest USB cable you should use.
I called Canon tech support with an installation question and they were quite good.

HP ScanJet 2200c Color Flatbed Scanner (C8507A) Review

HP ScanJet 2200c Color Flatbed Scanner (C8507A)

I needed a copier/scanner for use at home, and this was a perfect selection. The price was reasonable, and I make copies of bills and other literature that prevent me from taking them to work or to the library, saving lots of time. The hook-up was very easy, and the software setup was the quickest I've experienced when adding hardware. Much recommended!

I hooked this up to a domain controller. It took about 40 minutes of playing with the network settings, but finally it worked well. Scans fast and fully customizable. A great asset for businesses that need a cheap adf scanner. I am giving 4 stars for the amount of time it took.

This portable drive is well made. The rubber siding helps protect it from getting scratched; would it withstand a big drop? who knows?!?!? I didn't have an issue with the software being for windows only. My only problem is that the software wouldn't recognize my index finger consistently with the biometric scanner....sometimes it would, other times it would not. If it did scan my finger correctly the software would hang up. I contacted acomdata and they emailed me an update to the software. That did not help as I still encountered the same problem. I think the portable drive needs some fixes before it will be purchase worthy. I would not recommend at this time.

Visioneer OneTouch 9120 USB Flatbed Scanner with 35mm Adapter Review

Visioneer OneTouch 9120 USB Flatbed Scanner with 35mm Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this scanner for its ability to scan transparancies, and so far it seems to be doing the job. However, compared to my primary scanner (Lexmark X5150), I found using it as a stand-alone very confusing and finally started using it only through my PaintShop Pro 7. When it's in operation, it sounds as if it's grinding coffee, and there's now a very discernable (and growing) streak on the inside of the glass. I'd swap it out if it had been purchased locally, but for what it cost, I'm not going to bother, since it's already paid for itself over what it would have cost to have the transparencies scanned.
It's not bad as an auxiliary scanner, but if it's to be your ONLY scanner, it just doesn't seem likely to hold up. Caveat emptor!
