I just finished converting 100 slides to digital format using this slide scanner and it works great. Here are the details...
I have a Canon S3 IS camera. This product includes all the necessary connection items for use with the camera including a special connecting ring for the S3 camera body and a 52mm to 58mm conversion ring for the slide scanner assembly. Bottom line, this kit has all the necessary hardware and you do not need any of the Canon lens adapters to use this.
The unit is well made physically - the lens tube is metal and the slide holder is plastic. It is easy to insert and position the slide.
So how were the results? The quality of the results exceeded my expectations. I am not a professional photographer but to my untrained eyes the output, both on my 19" computer screen and printed via my inkjet at 6x4 looked very, very good. Was it absolutely perfect? No. However, all of the imperfections that I observed were due to the original slide. On about 15% of the slides there were a few (2-3) dust specs. On about 20% there was a slight color tint. The dust and color was part of my original slides, your situation will vary. These imperfections were fixable in Photoshop Elements.
The process I used was to first sit down and use this device to photo the 100 slides and then use Photoshop Elements to edit them. It took about 1 minute per slide to photo and about 3 minutes per slide to edit - so figure about 4 minutes total per slide when you do them in batches. One very useful feature of the S3 (and most Canon cameras) is that you can connect the camera to your computer and use your computer to control the camera. The big advantage is that I was previewing the photo on the large computer screen rather than the small camera LCD - this was a huge plus. I am not a very sophisticated Photoshop Elements users, but here is the process that I went through: 1) rotate the picture to level the horizon [don't know why so many of my slides were shot crooked, but probably 20% needed this], 2) crop to a 6x4 aspect ratio (when you photo the slide you will have black bands on the top and bottom that you want to get rid of because the slide aspect ratio is not the same as the digital camera's photo aspect ratio], 3) remove any dust or scratches [maybe 10%, but I was not a perfectionist], 4) adjust the color to eliminate color tint when necessary, maybe 10% of my slides, 5) adjust the levels to brighten colors and contrast, 50% of my slides.
The process is easier than the above paragraph makes it sound. I looked at slide scanning services on the internet and they wanted 50 cents to a dollar. Dedicated slide scanners were $500+. I have no reference to compare the end result, but I am very happy with this solution.

Although I'd been successfully using a Canon CanoScan LIDE 500f to scan OLD 35mm color and B&W negatives, it was slow going. Many of the negatives had curled up with the low humidity of Winter and mounting them into the 500f's slide adapter was quickly becoming a nightmare. I worked out how long it was taking me to mount and scan each negative, and took a look at my remaining workload (about 2,000 negatives and mounted 35mm slides remaining). It became clear I needed a faster solution both in terms of mounting and scanning speed.
Since the 500f's slide attachment only supports film strips, the new device had to support mounted slides. Also, the new device had to be simple to operate, allowing me to get negatives and film strips mounted as quickly as possible, while also having facilities to secure srips curled from low humidity. That's when I saw the VuPoint FS-C1-VP 35mm scanner. It was cheap, simple, and appeared to do everything I needed.
------THE UNIT
The VuPoint 35mm slide scanner is exactly what it appears to be, a 5 megapixel low-mid range CCD in a plastic housing. The housing contains a mini lightbox at the bottom to illuminate 35mm slides/negatives for scanning by the CCD. Simply take your slides or negatives, mount them in the included trays, and slide the trays into the scanner unit. Each tray window snaps gently into place, helping you to align slides/negatives under the CCD. The trays are VERY GOOD at holding curled negatives securely. (Extremely curled/rumpled negatives may introduce shadows into the scan. To relax the slides fully, try holding the tray over a steaming pot for about 10 seconds.)
The build quality of the VuPoint scanner is quite high. Although made of plastic, it has a very nice feel (akin to a 'satin finish' cell phone) and the mounted slide and filmstrip trays appear durable and fit firmly into the unit.
The unit gets power from an attached 4 foot long USB 2.0 cable, so it has an extremly small desktop footprint. The scanner is also insensitive to attitude, allowing usage virtually anywhere, from any angle (sideways on your lap, in bed, etc) making it much more likely you'll get that scanning job done.
------SCANNING
I installed the scanner drivers ONLY, ignoring the image editing software that came with the unit (Photoimpression 6) and instead chose to scan directly into PhotoShop CS3. Using this method I was only able to 'dumb scan' at the highest resolution of 2592x1680. For negatives, this means you will need to invert the image after scanning and then perform color correction/level adjustment/unsharp masking/etc. Mounted slides or film stips will scan positive but will still need additional filters applied for best results. If you're scanning into CS3, create ACTIONS to handle typical slide archetypes (negative, positive, blurry negative, desaturated positive, scratched and dusty slide, etc).
In practice, the scan driver shows you a low framerate preview of the image under the CCD. If you wait between 5 and 15 seconds, the light levels in the image will balance and be ready for scanning. A sequence of positives with extremely different light levels will push your waiting time towards the maximum. In extreme cases you can wait 45 seconds+ for decent balancing.
To initiate a scan you either press the 'copy' button on the unit, or click the 'snapshot' icon via the scanner software driver. Snapshots are quick, but once you have a snapshot you then need to 'transfer' the image to CS3. This can take as long as 30 seconds per image.
The driver holds 12 snapshots. Once this 'buffer' is full you need to transfer the snapshots to CS3.
The driver grabs a decent amount of CPU while its previewing - taking 60% CPU on a 1GHz Pentium M laptop, and 40% CPU on a 2GHz P4. I'd imagine CPU usage would be around 20% on a dual core (will test this out later).
------IMAGE QUALITY
This unit will win no awards for image quality. I scanned in three 35mm mounted slides and viewed them onscreen while simultaneously also using a backlit slide viewer. The raw scans were fairly grainy, with blown out highlights.
I am linking to the RAW scans (with light JPG compression) for your review. Try cleaning up these photos yourself to get an idea of what the scanner is capable of.

In some cases the loss of detail was so extreme that the photos were virtually worthless. High contrast photos seem to suffer the most (ex: a person in an unlit room sitting framed in a sunny window). However "normal" photos will occasionally suffer the same fate (a person sitting at a cafe with black shirt and creme colored striped pants = dramatic loss of detail in the pants).
The source photos provided were taken by my father and grandfather, using low-midrange SLR cameras - I have no idea of the lens or settings used. I assume these types of images represent typical inputs for this scanner. Higher quality slides with large, in-focus subjects should provide comparatively higher quality scans.
------OVERALL VALUE
As just a raw USB slide scanner, the VuPoint is arguably worth the US$99 purchase price.
The hardware is well designed and very user friendly, looking like something worth at least $99. However, the driver software is horribly amateur compared to the likes of Canon and HP and seems cobbled together AT BEST. It cripples the hardware side of things, turning a potentially quality product into a questionable purchase. Until the driver software is vastly improved, allowing you to switch off the 'auto' adjustment functionality and set your own parameters, there will be no way to scan high contrast imagery.[NOTE: The AMSHOW direct capture software that is installed along with the driver allows you to access some scan parameters. But I have been unable to make these changes persist or affect my scans into PhotoShop. I eventually installed the PhotoImpression software suite that came with the scanner, hoping it would provide me with a few more scanner control options. Sadly, this is just a consumer level app for rotating/sorting pics and applying canned image effect.]

The good thing about this product is that Nikon does not include any cheap glass in the adapter. ES-1 has no optical elements at all! Thus the quality of your reproduction depends on the quality of your macro lens, and of the camera. So why does an empty tube cost $49 and not $10 as it should? I know, I know, the "N" is $10, the 'i' is $10 and the "kon" is also $10. And we still do have issues with this device:
1) Despite its high price, the product has a significant deficiency forcing you to do even more shopping: If used with a customary 50/60mm macro lens, it projects the 35mm slide on a full frame 35mm area. However, the majority of DSLR's support support the smaller sensor size, often called APS or DX. In order to use this adapter with a 'DX size' DSLR, such as Nikon D300, D80, Canon 40D or a Pentax K20, you will have to use an additional 20mm/30mm long 52mm diameter extension ring. This might be the old K5 ring by Nikon. I use the K4 and K5 ring in tandem. Difficult to find, a hassle and more cost to say the least. Nikon should have included such rings in the first place.
But wait, there is more!
2) You might also need a step-down ring, because most lenses will have a filter diameter larger than 52mm used by ES-1. I need for example a 62-52mm step-down ring, do not confuse it with the much more common step-up rings 52mm-62mm!!
3) Another pain with the ES-1 are the two harsh metal springs depressing the slide to the device, what prevents its use with uncut film, and may even damage your slide. This is really a big, major, crying out loud issue with this device: How in heaven shall we copy uncut film? The solution would be so easy, if these springs would be made of a soft teflon, and placed horizontally rather than vertically. But Nikon is (in)famous for being both "the only game in town," and delivering things not well thought through. The uncut film ordeal with the SA30 roll film adapter in their LS4000 and LS5000 scanners comes to mind.
4) Another great deficit of this device is lack of any position fixing mechanism. The front element of ES-1 shifts for "zoom" and rotates freely. And this causes that after each change of a slide its position will slightly change. The result are crooked photographs. To prevent this to happen I use... a painters blue tape(!!) holding the front ring, once adjusted into position. How embarrassing! This reminds me of the (in)famous "credit card and a paper clip fix" in the $400 SF200 Nikon slide adapter needed to prevent jams! Nikon team "designs" again.
I think that this is a long and impressive list of negatives for such a seemingly simple gadget.
To summarize a generic opinion: Do not use any adapter with build in lens elements, take rather the Nikon ES-1 despite its shortcomings. Cheap no-name glass will likely spoil the resolution of your pricey macro lens. Nikon ES-1 is the right way of doing it, however in a lousy execution. Thank you Nikon for ES-1, shame on you Nikon, you blew it again.

With hundreds of slides reaching the age that the images were showing deterioration, I needed to scan them or let them fade away. I have tried a few other slide scanners and the process was so slow that I never managed to get more than 100 done. The VuPoint Solutions Digital Film and Slide Converter (FC-C520-VP-BX2) is fast enough and requires little enough attention to easily do 100 in an hour while watching TV.
This scanner is easy to use. Put in SC card, plug in power, open it up, put some slides in the slide holder, push it in the slot and press the button. You load 3 slides at a time in the holder. The first time only you need to set the resolution (why would the default not be the higher one?) and the film type (BW/color/negative) - the settings persist. The image processing time is pretty quick; 3 seconds to adjust the light levels and you are ready to press the button. Scanning the image takes another 3 seconds. You get a 1 second display of the scanned image and saving to the SD card takes 5 seconds.
One of the best things is it does not need to be connected to a computer - just insert an SD card and scan JPEGs to it. With other scanners I've used they had to be connected to your computer and you had to make adjustments for each image with some buggy application. This one is easy to setup and operate in front of the TV.
The scanning is very automatic. I get good scans (the source is fading anyway so perfect is not a requirement) with no adjustments ... just load and press.
One bug I have seen is some images show a blue-ish strip near the bottom of the image. Rescanning does not help. It can probably be corrected digitally.
The slide tray is also a weakness. It has a tiny latch that requires a fingernail. Once you get the technique it works OK.

This scanner is a reasonably good value and does a reasonably good job. If you have tried scanning prints with a flatbed scanner, you will be happier with the results you get scanning negatives with the PrimeFilm. A couple of caveats: first, this scanner is not fast. One roll of film a day is probably as much as you'll have patience for. Second, the scanned image quality is only as good as your negatives, and your old negatives are probably more fragile than you expected. Plan to spend a fair amount of time cleaning up blemishes in PhotoShop, and, frankly, if you used a cheap camera in the first place, don't even bother; you'll do just as well scanning the prints (and a decent flatbed scanner is a lot cheaper).
One last thing: if you want to save some money, go buy this scanner at C-O-S-T-C-O-D-O-T-C-O-M.

The Coolscan V is an excellent cheaper alternative to the Coolscan 5000 which I have also owned. My immediate project included about 1500 slides from my own collection, my fathers collection, and my grandfather's collection.
Most of my father's slides are Kodachrome. Much has been written about the inability of this scanner to scan Kodachrome slides and said about ICE4 not working with Kodachrome. Well, I have some good news The ICE4 does work extremely well for the most part. However, with Kodachrome slides it does produce minor artifacts in about 5 percent of the slides. I scanned with ICE (not ICE4) always on and then rescanned if I encountered unacceptable artifacts. I did notice that the scanner ICE feature was more likely to be stumped by old Kodachrome slides where subjects were wearing shirts with stripes.
The GEM ROC and DEE (the other stalwarts of the ICE4 other than ICE itself) work on Kodachrome slides as well, but I found that the results were unpredictable and that I could achieve better results myself in Photoshop far more quickly. The GEM ROC and DEE features simply took too long and slowed down the scanning unacceptably. The results, for me, were not worth the additional scanning time. So I never used these features. But the "enhance" feature on the scanner I used nearly 100% of the time with great results - much better than the GEM ROC and DEE features.
The scanner is fast and does produce wonderful wonderful detailed scans, easily demonstrating the grain in the transparancies at 3000 and 4000 dpi. The Kodachrome slides were a challenge to the Dynamic Range of the scanner, but I believe that most of the detail in the shadows that is there was extracted. With dark slides I used the VERY useful gain feature turning it all the way up to 2 in the really dark slides. Unfortunately, Kodachrome, with all of its many attributes, does have substantial downsides including a very narrow exposure latitude and shadow detail is simply lacking. I think the scanner accurately reproduced the information including the colors on the Kodachrome slides, with perhaps a slight bluish cast noticed in some cases.
It wasn't until I was finished scanning all of the culled slides that I undertook to scan my select color negatives. And this scanner really came into its own scanning color negatives. Don't even TRY to scan color negatives without ICE because the results are unbelievably bad. Even pristine negatives have scratches and dust that magically are erased by the ICE feature. What a godsend. The scanned color negatives were just beautiful with very accurate color rendition. But immediately I noticed much more grain in the color negatives (Royal Gold and Fuji Superia Gold) than in the scanned slides.
One note unrelated to the scanner itself. Until you've used a digital scanner to scan your color negatives you can't begin to realize how far superior Kodachrome, Provia, and Ektachrome slides are to color negatives insofar as capturing detail. Even the best color negatives have much more grain that Kodachrome. And the difference in color negatives is substantial too.
The V was slower than the 5000, but honestly the difference for the non-professional scanner, to me, was not worth the additional investment. The V represents a superb value giving you nearly all of the advantages of the 5000 other than speed for a substantially cheaper price.
The included Nikon software worked fantastic for me. I downloaded a copy of VueScan which according to many reviews is superior to the Nikon software and found that for me the Nikon software was easier to work with and produced superior results.
Setup Summary: I scanned at a 16 bit color depth and 4000 pixels per inch with the scan enhancer turned on and the Digital ICE turned on. I did not use GEM ROC and DEE because of inconsistent results. I turned up the gain as necessary for dark slides and turned it down for light slides. Gain adjustments were only necessary on about 15 - 20% of the slides.
Setting up the Nikon Scan window was a little tricky too. I placed the tool palette in the far upper right corner of the window with the scan window placed under it to the right. The image window occupied the largest portion space to the left.
I can recommend this scanner without reservation. It is a phenomenal piece of equipment. If speed is not a paramount consideration and you are not a professional scanner needing the options (the auto feeder) offered by the 5000 then, in my opinion, the V represents an absolutely tremendous value.

Customer support [is bad]; the drivers and software that I bought in March 2003 had a 1996-1998 copyright date; and worst of all, scans get progressively darker. A scanner that can't handle exposure settings! it's OK until it runs thru it's 'calibration' routine, then it's the beginning of the end. I went thru two different units, they both were terrible.

First of all, let me say I am a neophyte when it comes to scanning. My mother passed away recently and I wanted to go through my father's 20,000 slides and scan the best ones before they, as many before them, disappeared into the hands of one of my 7 other siblings never to be found again.
After culling my father's slides I ended up with about 1000 I wanted to scan. After culling my own slides I ended up with another 250 slides. Additionally, I had about 250 slides from my grandfather slides And after that I decided to go through my color negative collection and scan the best of those as well. A daunting project! But honestly well worth the effort.
Most of my father's slides are Kodachrome. Much has been written about the inability of this scanner to scan Kodachrome slides and said about ICE4 not working with Kodachrome. Well, I have some good news The ICE4 does work extremely well for the most part. However, with Kodachrome slides it does produce minor artifacts in about 5 percent of the slides.I scanned with ICE (not ICE4) always on and then rescanned if I encountered unacceptable artifacts. The software did cause my computer to crash occasionally which was an aggravation, but a minor one when considered against its many attributes.
Setup Summary: I scanned at a 8 bit color depth (to reduce file size to 55MB and because I could not see a difference between 8 and 16 bit depth in the old slides) and 4000 pixels per inch with the scan enhancer turned on and the Digital ICE turned on. I did not use GEM ROC and DEE because of inconsistent results. I turned up the gain as necessary for dark slides and turned it down for light slides. Gain adjustments were only necessary on about 15 - 20% of the slides. The only two variables that I used once I was set up and running were gain adjustment and type of film or slide. All other adjustments were made in PS IF necessary. The scan at these settings took 90 seconds. Setting up the Nikon Scan window was a little tricky too. I placed the tool palette in the far upper right corner of the window with the scan window placed under it to the right. The image window occupied the largest portion space to the left.
I can recommend this scanner without reservation. It is a phenomenal piece of equipment.

Not what I was expecting, very cheaply made and not worth the money. Purchased this item and had it shipped to the in-laws house so that I could scan and convert my wife's old family photos to digital media. We arrived at the in-law's house for vacation. The package arrived in great shape and on time. We were all very excited about converting precious family photos to digital jpegs so that they could be shared, saved, and protected. I read the directions fully and then began to scan the photos. It was a very easy process and initially the quality seemed great, although....500 photos, and a lot of my time away from family, later I began to notice an irregularity in the scanned jpegs. I reviewed all of the photos and I began to see an artifact, the same image in all the photos. The artifact showed up especially on dark photos, or those printed on gloss paper and yes it can be seen on all of them, some less than others. It turns out that the image on the jpegs is a reflection of the aperture in the case of the scanner. I lifted the flap were the photos are inserted and saw that the aperture on the inside is the exact shape of the artifact on the jpegs. The problem is that the inside of the scanner "box" is all white and the light reflects off of the photo and onto the hole where the image is taken, back to the photo and then back to the imager; this then leads to the artifact on the photos. I am very disappointed with the images and the fact that I did not notice it until I had completed so many photos, which I will have to redo with another product. I would diffidently not waste my time or money on the product, especially if you are looking for quality.
