Arriba Cases AC-140 Padded Gear Transport Bag Review

Arriba Cases AC-140 Padded Gear Transport Bag
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, if you are going to use this with an American DJ Accuscan 250, dont buy the Arriba AC-85 mirror protector - it is too generic and too long to fit inside this case.
The case is well made, and makes carrying the Accuscan a heck of a lot easier, however is not well suited for protection. I tried to call the Arriba Co. at least 20 times over 3 weeks with no answer, and left at least two messages. They do not return calls. Oh yeah! I forgot, their email always bounces back because their mailbox is too full! Since I could not find an alternative product and couldn't reach Arriba, I decided to perform my own modifications. I placed a sheet of 1/4" thick Masonite in the bottom (full length), and then a piece of 3/4" thick polyurethane foam rubber over that (long enough to go up one side for the mirror end as well). Place the Accuscan face down into the case. With this inexpensive modification I give it 6 stars.
Instead of the AC-85 for the mirror, use a heavy rubber band around the neck frame and then around the pin that prevents the mirror from turning too far. That should prevent dammage to the motor and mirror during transportation.
A note to Arriba: Try answering your phones, and returning calls - not everybody wants to yell at you. Respect your customers and read your email. Do some customer surveys and find out that most professional DJs do not want bulk adding fancy zipper pouches on the sides of carry bags that get caught on doors, wall corners, and other equipment. We have far too many cables that would never fit inside the pouch anyway! Loose it.
Amazon! You rock!

I learned quickly that while the iPAQ was a great PDA, I used the onboard storage up quick. An e-book or two, a map or 3, maybe a couple of mp3, all of your "pocket outlook" files, avant go content and, heaven forbid, a short video file and you don't have any memory left at all... you can't even rub two bits together!
If you don't want to spend the coin for the PC Card expansion pack and battery time isn't a big issue to you, then this is a great solution. You can throw in any of several compact flash modules or, if you are a real space junkie you can use an IBM microdrive in it. At about a fourth of the cost of a PC Card pack you can add in that extra 128 mb. A warning tho. Given the opportunity to add in more storage, you will want to. I think everyone who can will want a Microdrive in this thing at one point or another. Sure, it drains the battery a bit more but in my opinion that is more from you using the content you carry more often and not a serious drain from the expansion pack.
Happy computing.

HP PhotoSmart PSC 2510 All-in-One Review

HP PhotoSmart PSC 2510 All-in-One
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This should be called the HP Photosmart POS 2510 instead, cause it's a serious POS. When looking at the reviews before i purchased, i read one fellow who said that it seems like 2 different companies made the software and hardware. I thought at the time "he's probably just not as PC savvy as i am, since i am afterall in the software industry." So i gave it a go. Boy was he right.
First off, the hardware and featureset is great. it had everything i wanted, and when i pulled it out of the box i was very impressed with how it looked and felt. getting it up on the wireless network was a breeze, which contradicted what some people said, so i'm starting to feel pretty pleased with my purchasing decision at this point. but then i installed the software .. it's 1.5 GB of pure crap. want to pick and choose which features to install? too bad! it's all (fax, scan, print) or nothing! so if you have another PC on the network that you only want to print from (which is likely if you're considering buying this unit) you can't just install a print driver. you have to install the whole 1.5 GB enchilada, which includes an application that's always running in the background (HP Director), which really bugs me because that sort of stuff always screws up your system. which brings me to ..
the software screwed up my system. now whenever i boot my PC, my system pretty much is locked up for 15 seconds as HP Director tries to figure something out. and whenever i shut my system down, HP Director never terminates itself properly so i have to kill the process myself. really annoying.
so then im playing with the features. i scan a picture at 2400 dpi .. and it takes a HALF HOUR. it takes 15 minutes to scan and then 15 minutes for the HP Photo application to open it. in the meantime my system is completely unusable. and i have a decent system! 2.4GHz, 512MB RAM. lower resolution scans are fine, but i suggest you go watch tv if you want to scan 2400 or above (i cant even imagine what it would do at 4800, 9600, or 19200 dpi.)
so i tell HP all this, and they arrange for a tech to call me, which is actually pretty cool. the tech guy tells me the 2510 must be on to avoid the system sluggishness at bootup/shutdown, and he says it was scanning slow because i'm on a wireless network (11Mb/s) and 2400dpi makes some pretty big files. well, i've been keeping the 2510 on 24/7 and i still have the boot/shutdown problems, and i've since moved it over to a wired 100Mb/s network and it's still just as slow.
i wish Canon had network interface options, because i would return this in a second if they did. unfortunately even with all its problems, this is still the best solution for my home network. curse you, HP.
** EDIT **
Couple more problems with this unit since i wrote this review ..
1. when I had it using my 802.11b network, i noticed that my other wireless devices would drop connection ocassionally. I didn't think a wireless client could possibly interfere with my wireless access point so I didnt think too much about it. But as soon as i moved the HP over to a wired connection, my wireless network magically stopped having problems.
2. when i set the network link speed on the HP to 100Mb/s Full Duplex, it only does half duplex. No matter what i try .. half duplex.

ColorVision Spyder2PRO Win/Mac Review

ColorVision Spyder2PRO Win/Mac
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It does the basic job well. The calibration runs smoothly and accurately. Hardware looks and feels solid. My two completely different brand, size and age CRT monitors ended up with exactly the same colors sitting side by side.

User interface is merely adequate. Pop up help instructions are better than many I have seen. You will need to know already how the calibration buttons on your monitors work (the hardwired buttons on the monitor, not software). In order to make any edits you must run the entire time consuming calibration over. Sometimes you can use "back" within the calibration, sometimes you must start over. Also the separate "profile chooser" utility software, has not add or delete profile feature - even if it is a profile created and saved by the calibration software earlier. You can see it with windows display properties, but it may not appear in the profile chooser list.
Dual monitors is the one obvious reason to choose pro over plus version. Yes, it does dual monitors, but with an asterisk. It will create separate profiles, but will only apply the correct profiles automatically at startup to both monitors if you have two separate video cards. If you have a single video card with dual outputs, it will load the same profile (the last one you created) to both monitors at startup. This quirk is documented in a readme file on the installation disk (and blames windows for the problem), but this limitation appears nowhere in advertising material, catalogs, or on the box. Fortunately there is a work around (not documented) at least with my particular video card and running XP. After windows opens, you can run profile chooser then choose the correct profile for each monitor. You may have to use windows display properties settings to specify default profile and rerun the calibration to get the profiles you want to appear in profile chooser and to select the correct profile as default.
Once it's all set up, running profile chooser is a four of five click procedure, but you must rememeber to check it before using any application that uses color profiles. And check it after you open the application. I've had them change after opening photoshop - though not every time.

Kingston SSDNow V Series 64 GB SATA 3 GB/s 2.5- Inch Solid State Drive with Notebook Upgrade Kit Bundle SNV425-S2BN/64GB Review

Kingston SSDNow V Series 64 GB SATA 3 GB/s 2.5- Inch Solid State Drive with Notebook Upgrade Kit Bundle SNV425-S2BN/64GB
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A few days ago, I bought the Kingston SSDNow 128 GB SSD (second generation series 425) from the biggest computer retail chain in North America. The device is working okay on my notebook computer, but there are three caveats to be aware of.
Firstly, the included Acronis True Image software refused to clone the Windows Vista SP2 system installed on my notebook computer, reporting that there are errors in my (factory-installed) partition structure. I had to use the free edition of Macrium Reflect to get the job done, by creating a Macrium Reflect image of my hard disk, and then restoring the image onto the Kingston SSD inserted into an external USB case.
Secondly, according to the "Error Scan" test of the well-known utility, HD Tune Pro 4.50, my Kingston SSD has four bad sectors. The error report generated four lines, one of which is "Error at 61681 MB (LBA 105843611)"; the other three lines are the same but with different numbers. I do not understand what this really means, specifically whether these bad sectors have been mapped out. My gut feeling is that these have not been mapped out (in which case, this would be bad news!) because the CHKDSK utility does not report any bad sectors. Furthermore, the "Speed Map" feature of HD Tune Pro reports that the same bad sectors have abnormally slow access time. So far I have not noticed any system instability.
Thirdly and most surprisingly, my Kingston SSD actually consumes more peak electrical power than the notebook hard disk that it replaced. (As an electrical engineer, I have an interest in power requirements.) Yes, it is true that SSD technology is more power-friendly than hard disk technology, but that is so only at the level of the storage medium. When we are talking about the whole device INCLUDING the drive controller, that is not necessarily true. Moreover, we need to ask what kind of hard disk (desktop or notebook) we are stacking up against the SSD, because some 2.5 inch hard disks consume very little power.
Three observations indicate that the Kingston SSD may be consuming more peak electrical power (but less idle power) than did the notebook hard disk it replaced:
Firstly, according to the same utility, HD Tune Pro 4.50, my SSD is running consistently at 40 to 46 degrees Celsius after starting cold from 28 degrees. On the other hand, my hard disk (the one replaced by the SSD) was previously running between 34 to 38 degrees. This is the Hitachi HTS543232L9A900, a very typical 2.5 inch 5400 rpm 320 gb SATA device.
Secondly, the Kingston SSD's power specification, as printed on the device's label, is 900 mA at 5VDC, which is actually higher than the specification printed on the label of the Hitachi hard disk (700 mA at 5VDC). It is possible that the SSD has higher peak current but lower idle current than the hard disk, in which case the SSD will still have the overall advantage.
Thirdly, when I put the SSD inside an external USB mini-case, and then plug the whole unit into a USB port, sometimes the USB port cannot power the SSD device. Between my two notebook computers, I have seven USB ports, and only four of them can power the SSD externally. (You can overcome this problem by double-cabling, but this will occupy two USB ports.) By contrast, all seven USB ports can power the Hitachi hard disk.
After switching to SSD, I do notice an increase in speed:
It now takes 58 seconds to cold-boot Windows Vista SP2, compared to 80 seconds previously. It now takes 6 seconds to fire up Photoshop CS4 in a first-run cold start, compared to 13 seconds previously. It now takes 10 seconds to get the folder properties of a folder with 140,000 files and subfolders, compared to about 105 seconds previously.
HD Tune Pro 4.50 reports the following benchmarks for the SSD (with the corresponding Hitachi hard disk values shown in parentheses for comparison):
- Minimum read transfer rate = 172.9 Mbytes/sec (versus 12.8)
- Maximum read transfer rate = 182.4 Mbytes/sec (versus 65.8)
- Average read transfer rate = 178.6 Mbytes/sec (versus 49.1)
- Access time = 0.3 msec (versus 18.4)
- Burst rate = 94.2 Mbytes/sec (versus 92.1)
- CPU usage during the benchmark = 9.3% (versus 13.8)
- Temperature = 45 degrees Celsius (versus 34)
Sorry, I do not have the write benchmarks because HD Tune Pro refuses to run them unless I "remove all partitions" (whatever that means). Also, the above benchmarks may give you the false impression that the computer is now running several times faster than before. Most of the time, the computer feels only slightly faster. But there are situations in which the speed increase is very obvious, like when I fire up a program, or when Windows wakes up from sleep, or when copying files within the SSD, or when there is a lot of random disk access (e.g. when comparing two folders).
This Kingston SSD has a "primary hard disk" index of 5.9 in the Windows Vista Experience Index. Note that 5.9 is the highest possible score for Windows Vista (unlike Windows 7, where the highest possible score is 7.9).
I give 4.5 stars to the Kingston SSD.
UPDATE (October 15, 2010):
I wrote my review of this Kingston SSD four months ago. This week I bought another one for my new Acer Aspire One notebook computer. This time, I bought the Kingston desktop upgrade kit, whereas last time I bought the notebook upgrade kit. I can confirm that the SSD itself as well as the included Acronis True Image CD are identical between the two kits; the only difference is in the mounting hardware (hard disk enclosure versus mounting bars + power cable). This time around, even though I didn't need any mounting hardware, I bought the complete SDD desktop upgrade kit only because it happened to be cheaper than a standalone SSD, for a couple of days at least.
This time, the Acronis True Image cloning software worked flawlessly. For my Acer Aspire One notebook, my Windows Experience Index for the primary hard disk increased from 5.7 to 6.7 after switching to SSD. The bootup time for the same notebook (using 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium) went down from 104 seconds to 49 seconds, as measured to the time when the sidebar widgets appear.

4 Port USB 2.0 Device Server Compatible Various USB Devices Review

4 Port USB 2.0 Device Server Compatible Various USB Devices
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought the SX-5000U2 to allow my wife to use my HP PSC2110 all in one from her Powerbook over our network. The product descriptions I read on various sites talked about it being compatible with all in ones. I had to return it because I went through the set-up process fine until reaching the last step where you connect to the device. It just would not connect, double-checked all the connections and everything, had my firewall disabled, no dice. Uninstalled and reinstalled, same problem.
At that point I discovered that Silex does not have a toll-free support line - only a toll number (absurd given the average wait times on those things, wouldn't you say?) or e-mail. While searching the net to see if anyone else had this problem, I came across a compatibility listing (http://www.silexamerica.com/us/support/printserver/pricomsx5000u2.html) and was shocked at how VERY short it was - there were only a handful of HPs on there (no PSC 2110 of course). The USB ports also felt cheap and flimsy to me.
Even though there was nothing wrong with my PSC 2110, I decided to get a network capable model. Between the inadequate support and very limited compatibility, I would recommend people avoid this product.
